Another Panasonic 3DO with the same problem that mine had. Also found the RF test pad and took some measurements on the scope. In the next video I also measured the RF level using a multimeter and adjusted my own 3DO laser to bring it in line with the level this 'untouched' laser was set to.

Strangely, I connected my FZ-1 for the first time in years and the audio sounded great for one minute until it suddenly went quiet. I was playing PC Engine Super CD-ROM² Akumajo Dracula X Chi No Rondo as an audio CD (works as a stereo test) and it suddenly got quiet when the track played into the data track, making me think I screwed it up by playing CD-ROM data as audio. I kept starting the track over and the audio was fine until I let it play to Track 2. I had it apart several months earlier and everything looked fine. This was back in January. I left it overnight and audio was still low. I gave it a week and it was still low. I gave it a month and it was still low. Whatever happened, it really did happen suddenly while I was using it.

Always a joy watching your channel, Thanks! Could you spare some details on what you use to record your video's with? I'm trying to get audio sorted for my own channel, but am having a hard time so far (that, and lighting) :/

Samsung R10 I think - you can get much better HD camcorders these days, this one is about 7 years old now I think. The camcorder takes care of sound too - nice mic on them. For lighting, I would recommend a room with lots of natural light, or you will likely need to add additional light. Videos edited on an old Macbook Pro (iMovie 11 or something I think). iMovie is OK but it has problems with 1080p for some reason, which is why all my vids are 720p.

GadgetUK164 Thanks mate! I was using my iPhone, which handles 1080p just fine (also using my MBP to edit). But the audio quality is horrendous, and seeing as my house is right underneath Schiphol airport, I need lots of noise filtering. You don't happen to be active on twitter do you? I am mainly active there, would be fastest to get the measurements to you :)

Those big caps seem to rarely fail; that one had some grime or dark sludge visible beneath the edge of it. Did it test OK, or did you end up replacing it?
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 7 лет назад
That stuff at the side of the large 6800uF cap is just glue! ESR good, measured just a tad under 6800uF! On this model 3DO it tends to be just those 2 smaller caps that fail on the PSU section. All other caps on the board are usually OK.

Hi Gadget recently got an FZ-1 on which I've recapped the power board. upon 1st switch on you get the 3do logo start-up etc and it runs a disc. then it resets and you get no logo and nothing runs (the laser moves/seeks but thats it) Further switch ons show the same issue. If its left cold without power (eg overnight) it does the same again which to me says capacitors. But they have been changed. Its not the CD-rom drive as I've tested a known good one in it. there was a small amount of corrosion around the powerboard area - eg on vias/resistors etc. I've cleaned it up as much as I can and reflowed all the vias I can see that were blackened. Do you have any other suggestions ? I'd love to get it working as its one of the NTSC-J models with the built in 240p mode switch ! Thanks a lot Simon
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 5 лет назад
Check the capacitors on the drive PCB, and consider the laser might be causing the reset - I've seen that before when it cannot read the disc.

@@GadgetUK164 thanks for the info SO i tried both of those - new laser, recapped drive pcb and to be sure a working cd drive but the symptoms are the same.

That big capacitor definitely looked like it was a bit bulgy. If it works, it works. No point in replacing caps if they work, is there?
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 7 лет назад
Nah, it was fine! They either leak, and this hadn't - just glue on right hand side where it joins the board, or they some and this was good as new. Same as mine - ESR ok, capacitance OK, no electrical leaking either.
@TheHighlander71
@TheHighlander71 7 лет назад
There's loads that get discarded for no reason at all.
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 7 лет назад
Yeah, they only need replacing if a) leaked electrolyte, b) high ESR (turned into a resistor) c) domed (clearly a problem), d) capacitance value has changed (usually shows incorrect ESR too), or e) same manufacture / batch as other caps that meet a, b , c, or d conditions.

I found 3do that said new.brushless motor. Not sure what that is
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 5 лет назад
Sounds like the main motor that spins the disc, OR the one that moves the carriage up and down. You would need to dismantle it and work out which motor is required.

Panasonic capacitors are one of the top-tier brands, are they not?
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 6 лет назад
Typically, but there are bad batches like all manufacturers. The ones in the 3DO and PC Engine nearly always fail, and they are mostly Panasonic caps.

Hi, ive tried to do what you did but i didnt solder the big capacitor really tight as i cut it too short but it powered on and then died so ill retry it but i chipped 1 little think, its the D33 chip next to the huge capacitor, i cannot found what it is used for but yea.. i might have killed my system, would love to know if you know what it does, its really small on the board
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 4 года назад
Do you mean you have broken the D33 component? It's a diode! I would hope its not a zener diode. If its a normal diode, you could try swapping it out for a 1N4001 or something like that. You would need to make sure the band on the replacement diode goes to the same side that had the band marking on the original diode fitted in the D33 spot.
@renesav

@@GadgetUK164 ok so its just gone, i do t have the means to fix that, there is no way it will wotj without it right?

@@GadgetUK164 its a really small part, i can swap it with a 1N4001 diode that is bigger?

@@GadgetUK164 seems i also chip c12 so would need to replace that as well...
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 4 года назад
Yes, you could fit a through hole (leaded) component, just cut the legs right down and be careful to fit it the right way around. This assumes that the original D33 is not a zener diode.

The front-loader 3DO always looked so weird to me. Like a mutant VCR.

Agreed - it doesn't look particularly modern does it. Looks like it should be stacked with the home AV equipment from the 90s.

LOL! They are good caps! At points in time there are and have been batches from any manufacturer that aren't great, but this batch I've had for ages and used them to fix a tonne of my own stuff over the last 10 years, and everywhere I've used them the device I fixed is still working 100%. Take Panasonic caps for instance, they have an excellent reputation - yet the cap I replaced in this system was Panasonic, as were the caps in the PC Engine CD-ROM I fixed a few months back. That doesn't mean Panasonic caps aren't reliable.
@Bylga
@Bylga 7 лет назад
When i used to work for a electronic manufacturer Jamicon was the cheapest caps in the catalog. All i can think of was: "You get what you pay for" Suncon capacitor was also cheap. But if remember correctly they was made by Sanyo? And i have great respect for them. But there prices made me cry x.D
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 7 лет назад
I think it depends on where they are being used. For basic smoothing caps, which is what those caps are doing on this board, then they are fine and will last a long time (probably longer than the Panasonic ones that were on there originally). I also disagree that you get what you pay for - I've seen loads of examples of expensive resistors and caps that actually don't perform any better than components at a 10th of their cost. I've also paid lots for reputable brands in the past to find they fail sooner than where I've used cheap none name brand chinese caps (and those chinese caps are still working!!!) Things are different though when you start getting onto precision differences, then you do get what you pay for.
@Bylga
@Bylga 7 лет назад
I am pretty sure you got more knowledge than me when it comes to that. =D
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 7 лет назад
I make a lot of mistakes, and tbh your point is generally valid - what I mean by that, if I needed to swap coupling caps for RGB, or audio coupling caps, I wouldn't have used the Jamicom caps there, although this batch I have would probably be OK.
