I paid the hefty price and bought the lens. I am very satisfied with its performance. Its very sharp through the entire range. I tested my example in a shop before buying since I have heard about copies being not that sharp at 300mm. Mine is totally fine with open aperture. The bokeh is beatiful and the macro capability handy. So far I do not regret spending 1300€ on this.

I recently purchased this lens to go on my S5. It's superb. It's sharp at all focal lengths across the frame. It's heavy, but it has a great focal range and is very verstatile.

Welcome back! I have had the Pentax K-01 since it was new. It is a fun camera, and while not the complete package it is quite responsive and intuitive for what it does. It is very much lacking and EVF though, limiting usability outside. No idea how good (bad) it is at video though :)

Fantastic, the bison shot was incredible. I do wonder if the characteristics of these lenses is being orientated towards video. However, for me I’ve recently bought the Sigma 100-400 which really is excellent

No big deal, but when you guys and others make fairly sweeping statements about the availability of the L-mount lens, Leica L lens (who originated the mount) are often excluded. Leica have a 90-280 F2.8-4 lens which is beyond superlative (mind blowing actually). Yes, it is in a different price category, but it's still there. Very comprehensive review overall.

Can you review the Sigma 100-400 (I know you mentioned it but I'd rather get a full review of course)!? I mean, with the issues on the long end here, even if the Sigma is a bit slower, I suspect that the quality cannot be worse (I have had some fantastic Sigma glass), so the price is very confounding...

When he said it was a bit expensive I expected the worst. But tbh it's kinda similar in price to the Sony. I think it's a bit unfair to compare it to some 80s DSLR lens designs from Canon or Nikon. But then if the performance isn't there, it's a hard pill to swallow. Seems common in Panasonic Lenses, I had the 100-300 for MFT and up until 200mm is was good, afterwards it fell off a cliff.

I already have the 20-60mm lens. What do people think I should go for next - this 70-300mm or sell the kit lens and get a 24-105mm, plus a Sigma 150-600mm? I'm looking to have a lens for every occasion. I'm not a professional, just a hobbyist. Thanks

I hope that's sarcasm. At 300mm, let alone 1200, high res photo mode will be irrelevant because all detail will be blurred by atmospheric haze anyway.

I think price wise you shouldn't be comparing to the SLR lenses, you should be comparing to the RF and Z lenses. It is actually the same price as Sony's 70-300G.

So it's about the same price ($1249 vs $1349) as a Canon 70-300 L, perhaps get an EF-L AF adaptor and see what the differences are, the Canon lens is quite old now but was well thought of and there will be a squillion of them on the used market. Oh and -20C, my fingers would have dropped off half-way through the opening speech... ouch....

On price the Sigma 150-600mm murders this and there is a Tamron option for that. And using the EF mount adapter, you could save a lot more money while not suffering optically. If it had a constant F/4, it would make more sense, but for now, this isnt even on the radar for my S5.

I like the fact that the Panasonic S consumer lenses seem to offer a bit more than other makers entry-level lenses. Their nifty 50 is worlds better than the Canon RF counterpart. They tend to be sharp, with weather sealing, lighter weight, yet well built, and fairly uniform in design and function with their other lenses. The 70-300 started out expensive, but it’s come down quite a bit. $850 USD IN 2024.

That’s my problem with a lot of the L Mount lenses and why I’m so confused by the S5, if you buy an S5 you want full frame at a lower price point, but then you go to explore the lenses and none of the L Mount lenses are amazing for the price. I have an S1H and an S1R and don’t get me wrong I like the cameras and lenses but the money you fork out for them and the lenses I really don’t know if you are getting that competitive of a product.

Nikon's 300mm f/4 PF goes for just about the same price - that's smaller, lighter, sharper and a full stop faster. Why do manufacturers assume that anything mirrorless is OK to cost twice as much as its actually worth...

Why's that SUV at 0:54 crossing the entire road, and going over the frozen centre line? If it's to give you guys at the side of the road some space I think it's more dangerous to do that than just stay in lane, I've never seen anyone give a person who isnt even in the road so much room. Unless they had just finished overtaking another car but I doubt it.
