We compare the picture quality of the Panasonic FZ952 vs the Sony AF9 (also marketed as the Bravia A9F in the USA), two of the best OLED TVs available to buy in 2018.
Topics compared include near-black handling, colour accuracy, motion, upscaling, gradation, HDR (Dolby Vision & HDR10+), as well as input lag for gaming.
Our review samples are the 65-inch models, namely the Panasonic TX-65FZ952B and the Sony KD-65AF9. The more affordable Panasonic FZ802 OLED delivers similar picture quality to the FZ952, and is mentioned from time to time in this comparison review video.

I really like how he broke down the HDR brightness and why the Sony AF9 was excellent and the numbers skewed. You look at Rtings reviews and you can see the bias toward LG. Also noticed in one of the big forums complaints about live sports with the LG OLED's vs the Sony OLEDs but Rtings gave the LG a higher rating. I'll be getting a Sony OLED when I'm ready to purchase. Great review here thanks.

Great review!! Well done Vincent (HDTVTest) for comparing these flagship bad boy quality Japanese brands in a honest and sincere manner! As mentioned "These are two of the best TV's on the market in 2018". Big statement right there! Sony has the best video processing and upscaling in the market right now, and Panasonic has the best colour accuracy out of the box and after calibration in the market. Both TVs have their pros and cons, ultimately its up to the consumer what matters most. To me the cinema experience is the most important with what the directors intended how a movie should be seen with accurate colours, so glad Panasonic came on top with colour accuracy and detail. As Vincent mentioned, as a professional client reference monitor Panasonic would be his choice! I just wish HDR10+ gets sorted ASAP to make a great TV even better and Sony needs to sort out its Dolby Vision as LG wins points on this! It's interesting Panasonic HDR10 experience is better then Sonys Dolby Vision due to its issues. As this was a comparison purely based on the picture quality, would also been interesting to compare their OS and sound performance on these TV models. Personally I think Panasonics OS experience maybe better (although Android has improved) and Sonys sound maybe better in comparison. I am proud owner of the FZ952 and still respect and highly rate AF9. The best two TVs in the market in 2018 for picture quality....enough said!

@@greyfoxindy IF it was stated on this review by Vincent the Sony AF9 is way much better compared to the Panasonic, then fair play! BUT, Vincent did not say that. Even if I didn't own the Panasonic, I wouldn't have an issue owning the Sony AF9! I have compared them in stores and they both have similar high spec picture quality! Credit to Sony for better video processing. As I'm a movie buff and want to watch movies in the most accurate way as directors intended, I'm happy with my personal preference choice with the Panasonic. Vincent clearly mentions as a client reference monitor for colour accuracy he would choose the Panasonic instead. End of the day it simply comes to personal preference.

Another excellent comparison video, thank you Vincent! Looking at the PQ of both TV's, it seems like they are very very close. From the video, the picture from the Panasonic seems a little bit washed out compared to the Sony and the AF9 seemed a tad sharper. Was this also your impression from your viewing or is this caused because of the RU-vid video rendering? I personally do not need a soundbar so the Panasonic 800 series would be my preferred choice (everything else is equal). It is also 1K cheaper than the Sony so in the end I guess it all boils down to really requiring DV support (or not).
@hdtvtest
@hdtvtest 6 лет назад
Please do not judge picture quality from the video itself especially when Life of Pi is playing. The Panasonic FZ952 is closer to a large bay window with lots of sunlight, which could wash out the picture. Also, our camera's off-axis placement and focusing would introduce some differences which were not present in real-life viewing.

Check out Rtings comprehensive review. It's very disappointing. Sony severely sacrificed black levels to achieve a wider viewing angle and the FALD is worse than the Z9D with less zones. A lot of people are absolutely pissed about what Sony did to this tv. It should've been a near flawless tv, but instead loses out to the mid-range 900F in some test categories which is completely inexcusable for what should be a top tier television.

I can see the Sony Z9F being the TV for a slightly different audience this year. Vincent suggested buying an x900f if you were wanting to have one of the best TVs of 2018 for sports. Maybe with Sony implementing better viewing angles they are targeting an audience that would like to do something similar. Also if you’re a gamer it’s also a great option because naturally backlit TVs are capable of more bright highlights than OLED. I own a Sony Z9F and in some ways it is a step down from the Z9D but I love watching me my UFC and playing God of War on it. Dark movie scenes exhibit blooming more easily than that of the Z9D but it is slightly mitigated with use of Sony’s X1 Ultimate chipset. So to sum up, unless movie watching is the primary reason you are buying a TV I would still consider the Z9F a viable option for an all-around-great TV. There you go Vincent no need to review this one. I Gotchu! 🤘🏼

Man I'd have bought the Sony today if it wasn't for the Best Buy guy. I was thinking I was for sure gonna get it I got the Q9fn due to my 2015 Oled getting burn in I didn't want to go thru it again. However I have had the Q9fn for 2.5 weeks now and I've been going back and forth to BB, the guy there is the Lg expert and manager I got everything because of my Warranty and he has been there the whole time telling me to get the Oled again and with the Warranty I'll be ok. They took such good care of me on my old tv that I went ahead with the Lg. But damn this Sony in this video is like looking thru a window. My C8 will be here on Friday, if you have had an Oled for a few years, going to the best of the best LED still just is supper tough. I lost my 3d and my Oled all at once, it's good to have at least the Oled back, good god that Sony looks insane.

Unlikely. Based on technical reviews across Europe, Sony seemed to have designed the AF9 to not exceed 650 nits in peak brightness on 10% window with D65 white point.

The Sony AF9 just came out, so what are they going to release in 2019 which is just a couple of months away, the AF9 but without the lean back and call it the AF10? I doubt we'll see HDMI 2.1 or a 12 bit panel in 2019. I thought the Ultimate chip would make a big difference but it seems the progress in OLEDS are baby steps.

Sony’s picture is the best overall, even if it may not be the closest to gamma and EPT or whatever it’s called, it’s just that the differences are so slight nothing justifies the higher price.

For those of us in the States the Panasonic is a non issue. I was hoping the Sony OlED would blow the competition out of the water with the Ultimate Chip but was only marginally better than the new LG OLED. On Top of that, no HDMI 2.1 and no 12 bit panel. The New Z9F looked worse than the old Z9D with mucho blooming. Too bad, I was ready to buy the Sony AF9 as soon as it was available but now I'll wait for 2019 to see if HDMI 2.1 comes out on the new OLED's and to see if something new comes out from other manufacturers. Always liked Samsung, maybe in the 2019 they'll come out with something spectacular. Excellent review as always.

Vincent do you plan a similar comparison between Sony AF9 and Philips OLED 803. They are the newest OLED on the market, both with Android, so it seems an obvious hat to hat review wich would be very interesting, since the fact that the Philips is already much cheaper to have than the Sony. So it would be nice to hear from an expert if the upprice for the AF9 is wothwile in this comparison.

Both are inferior tech: Sony: doesn't understand Dolby Vision meta data, doesn't do dynamic processing of HDR10 content Philips: no Dolby Vision, no internal dynamic processing for HDR, no HDR from AmazonPrime-stream! ... which is a bad joke, but reality Get an C8...it outperfoms both in HDR easily...and is cheaper
@JGRGilbert

Skipped frames really annoy me, so I'd definitely go for the Sony over the Panasonic. Except for the Dolby Vision problems, they really put me off it! Why is Dolby Vision such a mess? It has the advantage of small improvements in picture quality over HDR10, set against gross fluctuations in black level and dim images that you may or may not experience depending on the implementations and Dolby library versions loaded onto the source and display. If only the Dolby Vision support on the Sony could be disabled.

They might call them frameless, but the plastic foil and sea through edge is too disturbing while watching sideways. Wonder when the micro led tv's will start shipping.
