Yeah, I just watched the dpreview video, they're really the best at this. AF is terrible on this camera, as Jordan said, about half of the footage is out of focus, ouch.

My friends Jordan & Chris did an excellent review of this camera, so check it out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mHuaMhq4RVM.html. Looking at their footage, the autofocus system seems to be completely unusable, and the crop with stabilization and 4k is far too serious for this to be considered a 4k vlogging camera.

Tony, at 17:09 your slide says that the G100 has full-width 4K video. That's not the case. DPReview's website has a diagram showing how much the 4K video is cropped, even without using any EIS, and Gordon Laing's video demonstrates that the 4K video is cropped. Only the 1080 video is full-width.

I'm sad about Olympus. They were kinda doing their thing, which I respect as a strategy. And I'm worried the micro 4/3 will go away. I love the format. For me it's the perfect combination of good enough IQ and genuinely small systems.
@youknowwho9247
@youknowwho9247 4 года назад
You can still use your gear if manufacturers go under. Just won't get anything new. On the other hand, if you need new stuff you can go to one inch point and shoots. The image quality is essentially the same as MFT.

Landscope 360 1 inch point and shoots are hardly an alternative to a high end interchangeable lens camera. I have MFT sensors in some cameras, as well as a couple of 1 inch sensor cameras, and I certainly can notice a quality and depth of field difference between the two formats.

Thanks Tony. I heard about Olympus last night when a photographer in Hobart posted the letter from Olympus to its partners and customers announced the divestment of the optical division. I do vlogging, but I love with a compact camera, not bulky camera, ZV-1 still a bulky imo, I use Sony FDR X3000 and Rode Wireless Go. It's small and compact, I can store in my pocket easily when not need or dont have a time to store in my bag, and my hand not tired when holding the camera. The action cam is old, but the BOSS is awesome! Waiting X4000 maybe from Sony.

This looks like a comment from someone who actually does vlog, contrary to most reviewers recommending M50 and even heavier bricks for vlogging. It shows those guys never walked with it holding it for 30-60 mins in one go. Nothing beats X300 with it's mere 120g weight. ZV-1 is approximately 3x heavier and sadly there is no competitor or replacement for X300. Go Pro doesn't even come close and with it's overheating and reliability issues, it's a clear no-go.

Nail in the coffin - Sony dropped the price of their A6000 to $398 body only. Used ones around me in great shape are going for $200. I traded a bunch of old lenses for one. After using it for less than a week, the camera is incredibly awesome, especially for that price. Has the same sensor as my Nikon D3300 which is really hard to beat! Sorry Olympus, I tried to come back, but there is too much competition now...MFT sensors are hard to match the Sony 24Mp APS-C....

Thank you for the quick Olympus update and the good example at the beginning with the weather forecast. I hope, for the sake of lots of other people, that you in your upcoming info-video could please elaborate on that the cameras will not just stop working just because the CEO company changes. Some people seem to hysterically believe their camera is now useless, out of service or won't be getting any updates - which seems to not be true so far the news go. JIP is selling technologies, so they might sell licenses and blueprints of Olympus to other companies - so maybe we will see Sony getting Olympus stabilizer blueprints to improve theirs, Panasonic rights on MFT, Nikon formulars for Starry AF etc., But they won't dismantle the brand to it's bones. They, for example with Vaio, restructure the brand financially focused, while trying to maintain service and development for a changed target group. So it might actually help lay off conservative company decisions from the side of Olympus. Maybe this means their cameras finally get a updated sensor, maybe it means they are a bit lower specced, but also much cheaper to attract another target group - who knows what JIO has in plan, but Olympus won't vanish on the snap of a finger - they apparently also just registered a new unknown camera in Russia shortly before the announcement. So we have rumors to support the fact that JIP will not just take Olympus apart and shut them down as some might to believe right now. So I would be really happy if your info video about Olympus will be strong in those points, because people seem to think their gear is suddenly worthless, worth less or will stop working on a spot, which it absolutely won't be. So heads up everyone, it's not the end!

Panasonic GH5’s mics are pretty great already without AI. Live music, nature etc it renders much better than your average camera, perfectly usable in a pinch. If this camera maintains that quality and adds additional vloging directionally, I’d have pretty great hopes for this camera. I’ve got a camlink on order that maybe this will be a great pairing with.

Its funny how the tables have turned for Canon. Its just a matter of time, according to Canon Rumors before we see an updated M50(mk2) announced. Plus it's powerful little companion to my EOS-R & with good reason its was the number one mirrorless camera in the world. Indygreg71 couldn’t agree more. TBH I think camera body size is oversold. No point have tiny bodies and massive lenses. For example I like doing in macro photography and although I’ve had Sony FF cameras and their amazing 90mm macro in the end it was just too big to take out easily and not balanced on the body. So it was mostly sitting on my shelf. By comparison the 60mm Olympus lens with the IBIS on the E-M5 iii is just amazing. Light, sharp and most importantly almost always with me.

Mark Edridge That is the Olympus problem in a nutshell. Too many people who liked them from afar, but chose other brands when buying. I did own an Olympus, a Pen EEE, a half frame film camera. I never liked that camera enough to buy another, but I had lots of female friends who loved their full frame OM cameras. I never really understood exactly why more women than men were attracted to the OM back then, but most of my male friends preferred Pentax and Canon for affordable full frame, and I replaced my Pen with a Pentax MX which I loved. When I purchased, Olympus was there to buy, but I never gave it any serious consideration. For me, in the 1970’s, Nikon was unaffordable, Canon was a good choice, but I loved the smaller size of the Pentax. Olympus marketing must have been MIA because they weren’t even a temptation.

Really have a itch. No loggic behind it. Still have the original Panasonic 20mm f1.7 (my favorite lens at my favorite 40mm length) with no body to attach it to. Makes no sense to get a u 4/3rds camera for my 20mm but that itch won't go away. So watching this video to see if the G100 makes sense as a lightweight outdoor vlogging camera. Long term viability for u4/3rds?-only if totally new sensors come out with more sensative media which is available but would be a major shift of the whole industry.

Canon did come out with the M-6ii so I think that the M system is not dead. I believe that Canon will continue to come out with bodies using the APS-C sensor as long as there is still inventory of APS-C sensors they need to get rid of. Whether they come out with new lenses is another matter but as long as there are 3rd parties making lenses, there is no need to stop expanding on the M mount line. Aside from 3rd parties, there is also a huge number of people adapting their old EF/EF-S lenses that Canon wants to take advantage of. Based on DSLR history, one of their latest offerings was the 90D, which was an APS-C mount. Only the 1DXiii came after that, so it’s safe to assume that Canon appreciates that they became the number 1 seller of DSLRs due to the sales of their consumer offerings so I don’t see them giving up that market. They will not stop development in an area where they have such a strong foothold. The M mount is here to stay

On paper this should be a good camera and its pre-release so hopefully a firmware update will fix the issues. But to offer a camera to vloggers and give it only digital IBIS and contrast detect autofocus that hunts a lot is a big problem. Those are the two most important things for doing a vlog and Panasonic messed up. Thats before the terrible crop in 4k, that makes it unusable unless you spend a fortune on a very wide lens.The 4k also up-samples, making it quite soft to, the RX100 seems better, and it has only a 1 inch sensor! It is a promising stills camera, nice an compact though. It has that going for it. If they can fix the autofocus, and maybe do something with the crop in 4k, then on release it may be a decent camera. But as it stands, it has issues that must be addressed.

After 3 years of this video posted, MFT is still alive and so is the OM system and Panasonic m43 (their market is far less than apsc though). Possibly still there, because people do like a smaller camera kit for personal use, family use, and travel or vlogging with more features than a phone. Panasonic G100 with m43 sensor ranks as one of the best choices at this price point in competition with M50 and ZV-1, and its features. Canon M50 may have a larger sensor for better low light but is less compact. This also depends if using a prime over a kit lens though. The Panasonic G100 with its 12-32mm kit lens is great as a "compact carry-anywhere camera" that also does video and vlogging, that fits in tiny camera bag or purse. Only when going up in price when you include body and kit lens, the next cameras to consider with larger apsc sensor are Canon R10, Sony ZV-E10 and Nikon Z30, however, the kit lens is larger than with the compact Panasonic G100 with 12-32mm kit, as is the price a bit more. A small external mic can also help this camera in outdoors for clean audio and it has a mic jack.

I think that's why he is analysing the specs and ideas to talk about what we should expect, so we can compare our expectations with the real world, thus he announcing to wait for test. His recommendation pretty much is summed up at the end 'What do you wish to see?' - meaning we as customers should be holding up Standarts to all brands to force them into improving and so we can critically evaluate the G100 when it's there or pre-production faces (like on DPReview TV)

Neopulse00 The biggest problem for Pentax is that they are owned by Ricoh. Ricoh has made it plain that they will not put money into innovation with Pentax, but for now will continue to produce old style DSLR’s under that brand. Ricoh’s big focus on innovation is entirely on the Ricoh brand where they are doing well in the 360 camera space with their Theta line, and they seem happy with the continuing popularity of the “street camera” concept with Ricoh branded cameras. It seems to me that they are no longer attempting to win new Pentax customers, and are just amortising their Pentax investment by supplying their existing, ageing, and dwindling customer base. When the numbers get too low, they will most likely close down production without any announcement and there will be a couple of years of selling remaining stock. I expect that factory shutdown within 5 years, probably sooner than later, but it will only be when some things get in short supply that users will discover what happened. It is what happened to Bronica when Tamron bought them, then cut off development funds, then shut the factory sometime around 2004 without fanfare. It is the problem with no longer being master of your own destiny.

For certain types of photography a smaller sensor is a better solution for extra reach and larger DOF (macro work). A FF is not the best option in all scenarios. People fail to realize (because some times they are "influenced" to do so) that you need to choose a system based on your needs, and when buying a camera your not buying just a sensor format, you buy features (IBIS, Livecomposite, Livebulb, highres), you buy lenses, you buy a SYSTEM. And you buy it with MONEY! That simple fact is an Olympus 300mm F4 PRO lens is around $2700. To get the the same results on FF you will need a 600mm F4 which will not only brake your back but also your wallet as it will set you off a whopping $12.000. Olympus 12-40mm F2.8 $850, Nikon and Canon's 24-70mm F2.8 $1600, Sony roughly $2100. Yes, I know, you get the DOF of roughly F5.6 on FF, but still. For lowlight and shallow DOF, you buy a larger sensor camera, for reach, lightness, compactness and bigger DOF you get a smaller sensor camera, simple. A Sony a9 or a Nikon D850 are awesome because they are what they are, not because they are FF. Would you really pick a D610 or a 6D over a Fuji X-T3/4 or an Olympus E-M1 mk III? I currently own one M4/3 camera and two APS-C cameras. The image quality from all three of them are more than enough for me. If at some point I find the need to have "supreme" image quality I will go straight to Medium Format.

the m43 system was designed for people who like to shoot. the em5 iii is the perfect expression of this philosophy. pair that with the 12-200 or another weather sealed lens and there's not much you can't do, rain or shine, stills or video. it is not best in class at any one thing. other cameras in its price range are better at stills, better at video, etc. but what the em5 iii has is the combination of features. phase detect in 4k, no crop in 4k, tilt flippy screen, weather sealing, wide lens selection, etc, etc. it is also small, light and while a pairing with something like the 12-200 looks relatively large it is in practice light and portable. it's also frankly a rather classic good looking camera that doesn't play up nostalgia for nostalgia's sake. other m43 offerings also provide unique things. the pen-f is imo hands down the best looking and best designed camera of the digital age. the gx850 cannot be beat for image quality in a pocketable format. that whole line with the gm1, gm5 and the gx850 ought to have butchered the vastly inferior sony rx series that people like for reasons i can't fathom. but this kind of gets to the heart of the problem. despite strong offerings especially early in the life of the system when it was the only mirrorless format around, as time went on, pany and oly didn't quite seem to know what to do with the competition and the technical limitations of the system caught up to them. m43 ought to have dominated the mid range, entry level and photojournalism market. instead canon with the m100/200, and the m50 is eating m43's lunch. virtually all the m43 bodies are too expensive right now. take for instance the canon rf with the 24-240 kit - it's 1/4 cheaper than the em5 iii with the 12-200 and due to the characteristics of the sensor and optics of that lens it is a better option for stills shooters - it's a shit camera other wise but for that one thing, which is a pretty damn important thing, it is better. meanwhile the gx850 can be had for the cost of TWO fracking canon m100s which has depth from defocus for video and an objectively better sensor for stills. Pany is putting up a strong showing with the gx85 and g7 two lens kits vs the m50 but still - those cameras have poor autofocus. the fact of the matter is m43 cameras were innovative in the early years to midlife of the system but then for whatever reason failed to progress or at least lower their prices to remain viable. the pen-f, beautiful as it is, simply cannot sell at that price point. it never did. the price never came down. it would be expensive if it cost half of what it does. it would then compete (body-only mind you) and be a tough sell against the gx85 which has objectively better specs and comes with two lenses. As a m43 propagandist I will always harp on about ergonomics of the format and the overall je ne sais qois of the system that i enjoy. it's something m43 owners understand - that you can't really convey it to ppl until they try it. they don't have to like it but once you've used one of the better m43 bodies paired with a few decent lenses you will understand what we mean when we talk about the handling and usability of the system. going back to ff feels cumbersome - something people accept when they absolutely have to have that depth of field and low light capability. but for the rest of us who just like shooting, m43 is good enough to do all the things we want to do and have fun with it. visual artists don't look at megapixel counts. they look at versatility. they will pick the camera that has the combination of features that allows them to play around, do stuff, be creative and that doesn't require you to spend your life in post all the time. many professional photographers use gear you wouldn't believe. i once saw a guy using an ancient nikon 12mp body. "clients can't tell the difference" he said. and he's right. at the end of the day a well composed image that's beautiful and captures the right moment from the right angle with the light just so... is not something that comes from a big ass mp count body. it comes from the artist's ability to capture it. and hey if you like bigass mp, that's ok too. :)

The Canon M50 has EF-M Sigma 16mm f1.4 (~25.6mm f 2.24 in FF terms), which costs only 399$, in case someone needs a native 24 mm (ish) option. The enthusiasm with which Canon is pumping out RF glass, when contrasted with the almost step-motherly treatment meted out to the M-mount in terms of lens R&D gives a clear indication of Canon's intent. After almost a decade on the market, the EF-M does not even have a 300mm native telephoto, on the other hand, the RF mount will get a bunch of exciting and lightweight 400mm, 600mm and 800mm options after barely 3 years on the market. This is just one segment of the lens portfolio and in all others, the same story repeats. Long story short, I agree with Tony, the M-mount at least in terms of lens development is dead.

Bigger display 3,2" -> 4" make display bigger. Please complain about small screens and lot of space around the screen. If smart phones can have borderless design with all electronics inside i am sure, that they can fit 4" display into same body. There is almost no change for years. I want bigger dislpay because: -easier focus check -see more details -more comfortable work with small icons and menus -when i show photo to somebody, -viewfinder covers a lot of eyes rield of view. Bud display quite little. There are situations when i use display instead viewfinder. Specially during shooting video. -for video overall -i am sure that, you can htink um even more reasons :) Thanks.

Tony claimed the Canon M50 does not have a fast 24mm lens available, which is true. Canon sells a EF-M 22mm f/2 STM lens. This is what frustrates me about Tony. Is he correct? Yes, Canon does not make a 24mm for the EF-M mount. HIs claim is misleading. On most APS-C bodies a 24mm will produce a 35mm FF equivalent angle of view because of the 1.5 crop factor. Except, Canon APS-C bodies have a 1.6 crop factor. This means a 22mm lens will produce the 35mm FF equivalent angle of view. In other words, Tony is flat out wrong. You be the judge as to why he is wrong.

i would say MFT won't dead... simply because MFT is the real mirrorless system camera and as you all know, all big companies such as Nikon, and canon etc, the switch their product to mirrorless, there must be a reason for it logically. If you own a big company (DSLR) and see MFT, which already own the mirrorless system for more than a decade... why would you like to switch your system into mirrorless in nowdays and not back in early 2008?
