Very astute, I like how you broke this down. AFF works the best in my experience too. The one thing I will say is the focal length from your face to the books was very close and not much dof to really challenge this setting. Still, these settings in AFF are a great find and I will continue to use them shooting real estate. Thanks for doing this. 👍
Nicely done. Never thought of forcing shutter angle using shutter speed. I have stopped being bugged by doubling shutter speed over frame rate on my vlogging bits as I cannot tell the difference. No one can. But I shall try this. I love my G85. Good luck with your channel.
Peter Paul Chato Yeah, one of the guys in the comments on Yoda's video shared the formula so it was definitely worth testing out. On the g85 I think Aff works better regardless than afc. Hope it works out for ya!

Wow that is serious. I watched that video with the other guy too. I think it’s a lot simpler just to set and use manual focus for most situations. That’s what I’m doing for now with the GH5. I have manual focus peaking turned on so I can see what’s in focus easily and also I have the option where it zooms in on the screen when focusing to check focus initially. I’m working on a video on this right now. I came across your channel from VRA. 😀
Barnabas Lawson Yeah, it's pretty awesome! I have never been bothered with the g85s auto focus never the single point focus is so spot on. I'm definitely going to keep experimenting with this though. 😊
I like the test video. I saw a minor difference but I really don’t plan to do a lot of auto focus kind of things on my G85 when I get it. Because I’d rather use the movie making focus-pulling technique with a follow-focus rig. But I can see where that’s handy for a run and gun situation. Great review Diana
Hey there Dave! Glad this video helped! However, this video is very old and for the price you can honestly find better cameras with similar features that have reliable autofocus. Present day, I honestly wouldn't recommend the Panasonic G85.

@@DianaGladney Yes, the G85 is notorious for having focus issues. But with the right settings and a great wide angle lens with auto focus such as the 8-18mm, it's a legit set up.
Great video, very clear and good structure. I’ve tested on both GH5 and G85 last night, it works on GH5 because I can simply set the shutter angle at 179d. In comparison to GH5, G85 did not work as well, I’m not 100% sure that there is no improvement on G85 yet, might need to do more test.
Thanks for the compliments, I appreciate that! :) I think since you can actually go to that specific shutter angle setting on the GH5 it makes it a bit easier. So far with the G85 I've found the sweet spot to be around 30fps, 100 SS and instead of using AFC use AFF with face detection on. For whatever reason, the AFC setting seems to take a bit longer (not much) but I always use AFF even when I'm in single point AF. Hopefully switching to AFF vs AFC will make a bit of a difference for you on the G85 :)
Diana Gladney - EntreWoman TV thank you for the advices, I’ll definitely test out your setting and see if there is more improvement. On the other hand I wasn’t really being fair comparing these two since they have different internal components. I hope the G85 will work as well as the GH5 after this hack, so I can save some money!
Just did this with my G7. Works quite well, although on the G7 it worked better in AFC (Auto Focus Continuous) for me, using Single Spot focusing. The big difference was bringing SS up to 80 for 30fps... thanks for the info!
That's awesome! One thing I found on the G7 too is the more modern the lens the better the AF hack works. I'll have to try it out with the settings in AFC and the single spot focusing like you suggested! Thank you :) and I'm glad that it worked for ya! :)
Sure thing! I found that super helpful as well since the G85 doesn't actually have the shutter angle feature, we can still get there on the G85 and other Panasonic cameras. :)
@@DianaGladney Thanks for replying. Am finding out various options and one of them suggests simply putting the camera in manual focus and just tap to focus (for Vlogging) and you'll be in focus all the time :)
Yeah, I just used to use zone focus so I have a range of what should be in focus but it didn’t keep it from focusing on the background smh it’d just be nice if they fixed the autofocus in their cameras.
IMDABROWN You know after having both Canon's and now Panasonic, I love that I primarily shoot with them now. It's just the perfect camera for me, but picking up the M6 or M3 now is only for certain stuff. It's cool having a "toolbox" of cameras for different things. This is a pretty cool find though.

The G85 autofocus is better than the GH5 anyway, well it was before the hack. idk about after the GH5 179d shutter angle hack, the G85 does have that option. The G85 isn't that bad in good light though... Great video!

Dj Shy To my understanding there's no way to get that specific 179 degree angle because it's a feature specific to the gh5. As far as the 24fps Yoda was saying it wouldn't work properly unless you go to the PAL settings for International settings at 25fps Vs the US NTSC settings.As far af the 60fps settings I'm doing a follow up video to specifically test just that. Then, I'll have a better idea of how well it works. Stay tuned! 😊
Hmm, that's a tough one for me to answer since I've never used an external monitor before. I have noticed that it seems like the autofocus "kicks in" when you're recording vs just looking at the live view. I'm not sure if that's just a G85 thing or a Panasonic thing. I've never heard GH5 owners mention that. Only thing I could suggest is to use the Panasonic app and control your focus that way. Even if you're in Manual focus, you can tap the screen, it will autofocus on that specific area and you're set as long as you stay within the focus range (depending on what the aperature/f-stop is set to).
@@DianaGladney Yes, my GH5 will autofocus when I am not recording internally. Actually we don't record externally, we are using cameras instead of webcams, so we use the HDMI to USB capture card. The GH5 autofocus fine as a webcam with the HDMI output into a USB capture, but I cannot get the G85 to do autofocus unless I hit the record button. I don't need to record all my footage in the camera though. Anyways.....
Do you have an update on this camera? Seems so troublesome to have to fiddle on settings...I guess I don't mind if it's stable after this. Have you tried dramatic focal change though? You show only close distances but what about something like macro to something in distance? Thanks!
No, I once I found something that'd work for my talking head shots I didn't bother with additional testing. I absolutely love this camera but it's easier if you're constantly behind the camera than thinking through which autofocus settings and setup would work best if you're always in front of the camera. I just recently sold it and now just use the Canon M50 because the more you're in front of the camera or doing something else like vlogging, you just need the AF to work and contrast autofocus just doesn't perform as well as phase detection even with the yodayeo hack. It makes it better and pretty good but the constant wondering about the focus got annoying for me despite how awesome the camera was in the long run.
thanks for the reply. i was going for the m50 but the battery life was kind turned me away. i am a canon user however. i just find it a hassle to be changing batteries every so often or just carrying those spares everywhere. the AF on the g85 is such a turn off. thought they'd have firmware updates but none that i've seen so maybe i'll just forget about this one. thank you again!
My pleasure, I always try to help where I can! I wish they would give the g85 and autofocus update as well but we'll see because there was a rumor about a g90 so we'll so how that goes. It's not that it's very terrible, but just not as reliable as canon's dual pixel autofocus. If you're doing tripod shots though like I primarily do, it does a really fine job. The yodayeo hack really does help too.
Unfortunately not in 24fps, but you can still shoot 4k in 30fps. If you're still wanting to shoot in 24fps, I would suggest using the Single Point AF. Still stay in the AFS switch on the back of the camera, but on the LCD use single point AF and you'll be fine. When I first picked up the G85 I did a test vlog and stayed in single point af the entire time and never had an issue with the focus.
devilslostlove999 Nope, not yet! I gently started to but decided to hold on to it. It has its benefits but it's just not as good as the g85 in my opinion.
I haven't tried the a6500 personally but I have tried the A7rII that is a little similar settings wise and such. I think these are pretty different cameras for different types of people. To my knowledge and from what I've seen the 4k on the a6500 seems to look better than 1080p, but on the g85 both look great, in my opinion. Of course, Sony doesn't do flip out screens, so that's a major difference. You also will getter the Phase Detection Autofocus with Sony so it really depends on what type of content you want to create. I personally didn't care for Sony when I tested their cameras - the settings were a mess and took clunky for no reason and I like the features I get with the G85. Plus, no overheating issues with the G85. I'm comfortable using the G85 and trust the AF, especially after this hack, because it's AFTER using Canon and seeing that I can live without it and that I much prefer the AF options I get with Panasonic. Since the cameras are pretty different, if you absolutely know you would prefer all you get in the G85 go with that, but if you know you'll get annoyed because you want the Phase detection AF Sony has, don't compromise - get what you really want the first time.
