The Panasonic G9 and G85 are amazing for video, but how do they stack up for photography? For this video, I shot identical(ish) RAW images on each camera w/ the bokehlicious 25mm f1.4 Leica lens. I did a side-by-side comparison of each camera's dynamic range, detail, sharpness, and low light performance. Is the G9 really worth $600 more?

Great video Ben. I currently shoot with a Canon T6 and I'm going upgrade to the Sony A7RII/III (haven't decided which one yet) and the G9. After watching your videos, I've been thinking about the G85 more. The G9 has been decreasing and I can get one for $1300 vs $600 for the G85. Should I still go with the G9 since I'm getting a Sony as well or would that be overkill? PEACE from ATL✊🏾
@b3naqua
@b3naqua 5 лет назад
segrad1 thanks! I think your camera choice depends on what you’ll be doing most w it. If you need really reliable video autofocus, go w one of the Sony’s. Actually the Sony’s you mentioned are p much better cameras than all of the Panasonic’s in terms of quality - you def get what you pay for. But if you’re a vlogger and need a flip screen, I would go w the G9 if you have the budget, or the G85 if you’re on a tighter budget. The G85 has served me SO well over the last year!

Really like your presentation style, thanks for the informative video! I just got a G9 myself and was wondering if you could cover some of the camera settings you like to use (for still photography). There just seems to be endless customization options and I haven't found videos that have been helpful. Like I found a few that talk about what they set, but not what it does and why it's better to make that change. Thanks for reading, I just subbed!
@b3naqua
@b3naqua 5 лет назад
Thanks for subbing Emmy!! I typically shoot photos using aperture priority, Natural color profile (default values), auto white balance, ISO 100 (or auto ISO/a higher ISO if it’s a lower light situation), RAW, etc. Aperture priority is a basic primer for me for stills, because that shooting mode will maximize your lens’ depth of field. For example, if you have a larger aperture lens like an f1.7 and you’re trying to get blurry backgrounds, setting your G9 to aperture priority and decreasing the aperture to 1.7 will give you the most bokehlicious results. Are there any settings in particular you’re curious about?
@ExaltedEla
@ExaltedEla 5 лет назад
@@b3naqua Thanks for getting back to me! Yes, I was curious about some of the more tech-y settings. I feel like I don't fully understand all of the focus options. There are dials on the camera, the lens, also in the menu. And then working with the joystick. Are there ways to make the focus area smaller? Another set of features I'm not familiar with are things like i.Dynamic/i.resolution/diffraction compensation/etc. Do you have opinions on how to set these up? Oh and also custom menu items. People seem to have their frequently changed settings easily accessible, what are some of our yours? Sorry lots of questions. You can let me know if I just need to sit down with the manual and experiment... =P Thanks again.

Thanks for this video. I have a G85 and like it. From what I've read, I think where the G9 shines is continuous AF tracking. It would be cool to get one of your friends running towards the camera and compare the two then. Might have to use a different lens, though, as this is not a strength of the pan leica 25 1.4.

There's a huge difference between the SOOC raw and jpeg images. The G9 jpeg engine is MUCH improved, particularly with skin tones. The G9 looks flatter because there's more dynamic range.

For me, I suspect the difference will be more in some of the additional features you get with the G9... Better IBIS, longer battery life, faster (and more refined) autofocus, and of course more video features. It is nice to see that in some ways the image quality difference is refinements here and there, especially on straight out of camera reds and yellows.

Interesting comparison, if you're a general stills photographer the G85 makes way more sense, but if you do video and you like to be more creative then obviously the G9 has more tricks and neat features. Love your videos which made me love my G85 more lol, but isn't the cost of G9 like some decent full frame cameras? Do you think image quality wise MFT is in any way better than full frame?
@b3naqua
@b3naqua 5 лет назад
Yup, the G9 is almost the same cost as the Sony A7III, for example. Technically (and scientifically), FF sensors are more capable of producing higher dynamic range, better low light performance, etc than MFT. But MFT is quickly catching up, it seems! I think it’s mostly about what you want to shoot and what features you need. I love MFT cuz the cameras and lenses are very powerful, yet portable. I don’t like carrying 18 bags of gear with me everywhere lol.
@batsonelectronics
@batsonelectronics 5 лет назад
I see it as, you get m4/3 for the smaller light lenses and ISO up to 6400 that is useable. If you need super shallow DOF and ISO above 6400, FF is the better option at a big weight increase. I had Nikon FF and DX Pro bodies. I don't need above ISO 6400 so I was able to get the G7 , then a GH4 ( I since have sold ) and recently a G85. ( also a GH2 that is up for sale ) I can use longer focal length to make up for f-stops for background blur so m4/3 is my new friend. The weight of FF and DX ( DX was my long lenses, FF my wides ) was just getting to be too much. I can carry the g7 and G85 with the focal lengths I need and the 2 cameras together weight what just the FF used to. 82mm front glass vs 62mm front glass for m4/3 makes for a lot less glass and weight. I also love 4K and completely silent shooting. Neither were present with my Nikon gear. Someday I might get a G9 and sell the g7 and use the G85 as the second body. Right now I like what I got and it works well for me. I look at the body and lenses cost as a whole as the Sony lenses are super expensive for mirrorless.

There was just a trade-in deal for the G9 through a few big retailers bringing the new price to $1097.99 before counting your trade-in value. That's around $300 more than the G85 right now. I was surfing BHPhotoVideo and holy crap, if you’re okay with buying used with minor cosmetic wear, a G85 goes for $533 (with kit lens) and a G9 goes for $897 (body only). I don’t think it’s ever been this hard to choose, it’s never been cheaper to get so many features out of the G9 like 4K60, pixel shift, better autofocus, better IBIS, etc, but for straight up bang for your buck, the G85 can’t be beaten either. It’s such a hard choice for me, I’m really contemplating how much I really need those extra features, but I’ll never know till I try. Otherwise, I could get so much more glass with a cheaper G85 body, the struggle is real...
@b3naqua
@b3naqua 5 лет назад
Yes!! The prices keep dipping lower and lower. Used is the way to go - I bought my G85 used from B&H and it was in awesome/near new condition a couple years ago for like $700. $533 is an amazing price for the G85! $897 is so good for the G9 too. It is a tough decision for sure! But if you have the $ and don’t mind a larger camera body, I’d say go with the G9.

you seem to have shot everything at f1.4. It makes it hard to tell sharpness when the DOF is pretty thin at that f stop. Maybe for future test shoot at f2.8 and use center cross hair focus point and hit the same spot on both. In Aperture I can hit a button that shows the actual focus location to tell better. ( comes straight from camera ) I personally don't see a big enough difference in all your comparo videos but the G9 is faster in some areas and has features not on the G85 so for me, if those features were worth it, the little boost in resolution would just be gravy. Thanks for the video though.

I notice on G80/85, on iso around 1600 to 3200 reddish image with led artifical lights but even in raw cannot compensate for that (shooting raw). I had to remove almost entirely red color by its slider, otherwise it's unusable the image. Tried different WB settings but in fact there was a problem (standard kit lens).. also with RAW usually u don't think about WB, but in this case I was worried because can't handle the problem, photo unusable, and so not suitable for jpg at all for this problem :/ I feel not so confident now about letting the camera shoot jpg.

I’ve printed G85 images at 20x30 and they came out fine. Not ultra-sharp, but from a bit of a distance they look great. imo 24x36 would be pushing it resolution-wise, and a bit of noise might be visible (depending on the quality of the printer too). I use monochrome quite a bit on my G7 and one of the things I am interested in. Also, I think the increased megapixel is advantageous when considering focus stacking and also using the high res mode both of which you can not do on the G85. I think these two functions alone if used enough can justify the price increase especially when some complain about the lower megapixel counts on MFT. Either which way great job with the content!

Unless you're too poor to own a computer and purchase Lightroom, there's literally no reason to shoot jpeg vs. raw. Stick with point & shoots if jpegs are what you're after.
@batsonelectronics

@@welfarestates8465 I only shoot jpgs, I have no problem making great images or selling those images. All with a m4/3 or even back to a D70 6mp from 2007. The file type does not make you good, it make help fix an error but if you need raw to do good work then that is about you, not the file type. Remember ppl used to make and sell huge prints with 4mp Nikon D1 way back. There are many pro's who generally only shoot jpg. There are those who prefer raw, but I have yet to hear one say you can only get the shot in RAW. ( except Jerad Polin and I personally am not impressed with most of his photos ) Almost all sports is jpg.( at least ppl I know who shoot sports ) Use whatever file type fits your needs but please don't insult those of us who use jpg and have no problem with it. I have printed 3 ft wide with an D90 in Jpg normal, of a landscape scene. Try printing all that dynamic range, see how much the prints can actually resolve. Not anywhere near as much as the camera can provide. If you can't get the exposure to within 1 stop of correct then yeah, raw is great. The great thing about digital and even better with mirrorless, is I can see the exposure in my viewfinder no matter the lighting. That exp.comp knob works great when you are too exposed or not quite enough.

The G9 might be very similar in this sort of photography. But the G9 has as you say more megapixels, but also way better AF, both in photo and video, also better low light, 4k60 1080p180fps. 6k photo mode, slightly better Dynamic range, while the G9 jpegs are also way better, better bigger buffer, faster burst in continues shooting, and to top it off pixel shift with up to 80mp pictures for product photography.

With all due respect Mr. Aqua, I think you forgot to put those frames back on after you shot them, because the G85 destroyed the G9. Psyche! I'm pretty positive I have an inferior monitor. That, and I just don't have the trained eye. In other news, congrats on 4K subscribers! It seems like there's a tipping point in the RU-vid algorithm where you get into that vaunted goldilocks zone, and it's just smooth sailing from there. It's reassuring to know the quality of content you're putting out is being recognized and rewarded. I am not sure if you've started monetizing yet. Would love to get a video on the analytics of your channel.

Lol so what kinds of juicy things do you think should be covered in an analytics video? It does seem like there is some mysterious secret threshold on the YT algorithm once you get to a certain level. My channel is still p tiny in comparison to the big folks, but I am starting to see a sliiiightly more exponential increase in views and engagement. I’m trying to upload more frequently and feed the beast ™️
@ultrakwon
@ultrakwon 5 лет назад
Milk that golden cash cow, Mr. Aqua! Once you get that snowball over the mountain, it seems to grow momentously. I think the 1,000 mark is a pretty big milestone nowadays, and it seems like once you hit that number, the algorithm feels confident enough to suggest your videos to potentially new viewers. I've seen channels that hit 1,000, and then the RU-vidr just disappears for eight months, only to return one day to 2,000 subs, which encourages them to get back into it. It would be pretty cool if you could break down the duration between 0-100 subs, 100-200 subs, 200-400, etc, to show the exponential growth. What do you think is the secret number? Are you monetizing yet? What other means like networking, advertising (business cards, pamphlets, bumper stickers, graffiti, Google ads, Facebook ads, etc) and social media did you use outside of RU-vid to promote traffic? Do you attribute any specific sources to helping you "break through," be it specific videos, collaborating, contributing to third parties, public appearances, etc? What's the demographical breakdown (gender, country, etc) of your channel, and what are your thoughts on that? I'm sure I'm missing some obvious juicy inquiries that would lead to Ben Aqua enlightment, so feel free to expand on these!
@b3naqua
@b3naqua 5 лет назад
Damn dude, thanks for typing all of that out! You’re amazing 👽👽👽 I think it would be an interesting video to break down how the growth on my channel has happened thus far. Yup, I’ve been monetizing since my channel’s inception, and luckily I was monetizing already before YT changed their 1K subs rule several months ago. It seems like around 2K was when my channel started seeing more views and engagement. There were a few videos in particular that completely surprised me in how well they went off. YT is such a fascinating beast! I’ll do some more thinking on the analytics video. I think it could be a good change of pace from all the specific camera stuff I’ve been doing too.

Looks like the G9 is using 1/3 stop lower exposure for the same settings, which is good because I always have to compensate for the G80 overexposure. More importantly the G9 is actually rendering reds accurately: the G80 keeps turning all my reds too orange, and no amount of white balance adjustment fixes it in-camera.
@b3naqua
@b3naqua 5 лет назад
You’re right, the G9 tends to be slightly lower exposed than the G85. Def a good thing if you’re trying to bring back a lot of details in post. I’ve noticed the red/orange thing with my G85 as well sometimes. Red seems like such a tricky color for cameras in general. It can get blown out so easily.

=Colour science +++= I'd kind of given up on the idea that sub-APSC could be a main camera system due to certain IQ issues, but the G9 somehow surpassed that threshold. Even the GH5 isn't quite there, but the G9 images look excellent. The ergonomics are excellent, and 6K Photo again takes those old 4K features across a threshold. It's excellent, especially paired with the Olympus Pro 40-150mmF2.8 & the Sigma 16mmF1.4 (I'm less convinced by the Panasonic lenses, and wonder if they were a factor in the IQ issues - though, perhaps the co-branded ones are the way to go if you've got the cash.)
