iPad and Panasonic's App and had the GH5 on full autofocus using the 225 focus points mode. I say the wrong number in the video (256) and it is actually 225 focus points, my apologies. I describe an important focus sequence in the video that makes it work much better.

Hi Peter, thank you for sharing your findings on the auto focus aspect of the GH5. After much comparison, I observed that the earlier sequence recorded on the GH4 to be sharper than the GH5's sequence. Also, the focus you acquire on the GH5 before recording seems to be on the whiteboard instead of your face which might be the reason why the GH5 sequence seems to be less sharp than the GH4. The part 18:18 to 18:28 where your hand is in front of your face for the GH5 to track on continuous auto focus seems to show that the GH5 was locked to your previous focus before you hit the record button as it could not focus on your hand. As such, it seems like the GH5 is not really performing continuous auto focusing. My guess was the auto focus speed set to +3.

Peter, one more thing. The + sign you mentioned for the focus on the app is not for focus. There are two touch functions in the app. The + sign is actual touch AE (Autoexposure!) The box, however, is the AF. The best way to use the app is to touch on the forhead for AE touch (face exposure) and touch on the Face for AF Box. Choose either AF Locked on at -3 for Continuous AF and Sensitivity of -2 (no hunting) or better yet, keep it on AFS (Single AF) and you will have no problems. You touch, it focuses, and it stays! :)

Brilliant Peter!! I have found the sam thing about hitting record and the camera prioritizing on initial AF! And that's why the App is the trick for those folks who want to use it as single shooters. The App is fantastic. If you're not self shooting the only situation where you need AF is on a gimbal. If you're behind the camera and want to change focus then just touch focus on the back of the camera. It's very fast and accurate that way .. the camera should otherwise be on Single shot AF and focus be changed with Touch to focus.

Merry Christmas Peter. Nice style you have! Related to the GH5: As long as the sensor gets enough light, it works. In mediocre lighning conditions it might not work anymore. Happened to me, even with the Sony A7RII and the Zeiss 16-70 f4 in an Office with not too bad of ligh situation.

Nice, could you go outside interview some people in handheld mode? (maybe you can interview the Trump at Marelago?) I'd like to see if you can get the auto focus to stay well put and not pulse not hunt too much. My guess is Panasonic can bring up auto focus performance to same level at 24p and 30p as it is in 60p in a firmware update. I'm lucky cause if I get the GH5 I only care about 60p. I thought from other videos that the AF was better when in Locked on mode?

It looked to me like the focus was locked on the white board, and when you were closer to the table, you were slightly soft. Your face was way sharper when you were at the board. I saw zero change in the focus. For instance, the black box of the GHF on the edge of the table did NOT come into sharp focus when you were leaning against it. What f-stop and ISO were you shooting at?

You've listed it as responsiveness (top) at +5 and speed (bottom) at +3 | I'm a little confused because in the camera it's listed at speed (top) -5 to +5 and sensitivity (bottom) -3 to +3 | just looking for clarification so I know what settings you're actually using so I can test it myself. Also, adding that info into the RU-vid description would be helpful. Thanks!

The photo and video settings are different. I spoke of the video settings but remembered the photo settings in the video :) You are more in depth on this so here is a little more info: AF Speed and AF Sensitivity is what we have to work with, as I am sure you know. Speed is slow to fast, which is how quick it will "slide" into the focus as a focus puller would do (when it decides to focus on a new spot). Sensitivity is listed as how likely it is to change from what it is already focused on. These numbers would change depending on if you are following a child or a faster moving subject (skateboarder) or a more static subject like me standing at the desk and talking. For me standing at the desk and talking I set it to +3/-3. The means it is quicker to slide into the focus, but more reluctant to change from what it it is focused on. It will still continue to focus even when it stays locked on me. In my case. I don't want it to change to my white board or blinking tree lights easily, but to "stay awake" on it's job of keeping me in focus. And that there is where the problem is. It seems to fall asleep. Different definitions range from not enough processor power, to not a high enough frame rate, to 4K overwhelms it compared to running the camera at 1080. The results are always the same though, works okay, but not pro level like the DPF from Canon. Just opened a little M5, no 4K, crappy 1080, but the focus is dead on. Great video Peter. Many thanks. After Max vids I was afraid that my brand new GH5 (I spent a revenue for that) was worst than the G7 I just sold. But it's seems to be very good with the settings in the video and mainly the 1rst step, focus before recording. Except very low light condition (dark objects or walls), it works very well. It won't be the best for sure, but I have to deal with theses limitations. It's a great camera anyway with a stuning video quality. Some classical functions like post focus, focus bracketing are really excellent.

the best setting I found is ALL-I mode fullHD50, the camera controls everything and autofocus becomes perfect.

Not bad! Yeah, you've got to know the restrictions of your camera and know how to stay within its limitations. But then you're all good. There's still the infamous 'focus snap' at times, but what can you do. It's not Canon's DualPixel AF and not like Sony's AF either. Deal with the limitations or use MF already. 😄 Not sure why people suddenly started to make a dealbreaker out of it, people having been managing to shoot stuff without silky smooth C-AF for decades. GH5 still makes for a damn cool camera!

Fun video and very helpful Peter! Love your set! Thank You! I may be on the wrong menu screen but in the "AF Custom Setting(Video) - Set menu - I see 2 setting possibilities "AF Speed" and "AF Sensitivity". The AF Speed is adjustable from -5 to +5 in the AF Sensitivity adjustment scale we have "Locked On" at one end of the settings scale adjustable to a -3 and at the other end of the scale "Responsive" at a +3 as a max adjustment on the scale. You mention setting Responsiveness to +5 which I can't seem to do , if I'm in the correct menu. I need clarification if possible. Thanks!

Can you explain why you would prefer 60p over 30p, given you leave the codec settings untouched? If a camera has to record information in twice as many frames within an identical available bitrate, how can this possibly *improve* the quality? The normal framerate is always half the current frequency: ie in the USA it's 60Hz, in Europe it's 50Hz, hence 30p vs 25p. Likewise, shutter speed should be twice the framerate. If you leave your shutter speed at 1/60th at 60p, the motion blur increases, but if you double that to 1/125th (1/50th to 1/100th in Europe), you'll lose a stop of light.

Do you have the Speed and Sensitivity reversed? You said Speed was on the bottom, but it's at the top of the menu. Speed sounds more like the thing that would cause the pulsing effect, not the sensitivity. From what I heard, the sensitivity determines how easy it is to "distract" the camera, like following a horse on a race track and a person in the stadium blocks the view for a second causing the camera to loose focus if the sensitivity is set too high.

Hello Peter...was just wondering if you planned any additional videos re the GH5 video autofocus issue. It's still a problem and continues to generate quite a bit of interest. I'm not just talking about the obligatory beatings meted by the Sony champions, but there are most likely many folks on the fence or owners concerned by Panasonic's seemingly lack of interest to resolve this issue other than to blame the consumers. There really is no focus issue. The focus "came to the forefront" because of Panasonics own blabbing that they had a great focus system when they don't. The truth is it is better than their former flagship (GH4) but still not in the league of the Canon or the Sony. Just to say something to cheer you up though, the CEO of the cameras for Panasonic says they are working on firmware for the focus system to make it the best of the best. Right. And as the saying goes - monkeys might ect. . . . . lol. When you are behind the camera and working it yourself, the tap-to-focus in video mode is not bad at all. Much MUCH better than the GH4. Just to let the camera run without operator intervention though is not good enough for higher end use. Unless Panasonic can pull a miracle, I don't think they will match Sony or Canon until there is a GH6 - just in my own opinion. For still pictures though, the camera is right at the top competing with the flagships from ALL the companies - and in lower light too.

Hey I have problem with saving the settings. If I change fn buttons or something in menu and save it all to sd card. Still will be back like it was when I change video or photo modes or switch camera off and on. Need some help...

HiI am sure you have settings wrong way round. Responsiveness is either + or minus 3 stops. Speed is + or minus 5 stops when I go into my GH5 custom settings. Frame area is 225Very useful info. Any more settings or tip bits gratefully gobbled up!

The GH5 gives you advantages. One of them is the sensor size. It create s a depth of field advantage that will be helpful in your situation. With a super wide angle lens and the added DOF on top of that the GH5 should do just fine and even surprise you :)

That's funny, and that is true :) I call it "live TV" and going back to rerecord videos is not something I want to do. I also kept saying 256 focus points - and it is really 225 :) I make lots of mistakes, but that is just part of my life lol. But I DO try to be better and better :)

Not a fan of the "pulsing" into focus when going from far to near... Also, seems to me like the whiteboard was always in focus and not you! GH4 sharper, But GH5 better low light (in the background).

Great video but its a bit confusing because the GH4 shot looks so much better and sharper than the GH5 shot which then makes people think the 4 is a better camera because you state you are using the same lens

Personally, I think the GH5 was focused on the white board at the beginning making me look softer while the GH4 focus square on me. I am about a foot closer to the camera than the white board (no, I can't move it forward lol). Later in the video I look sharper because the focus on me was proper. At least that is what I saw after the fact. Proves why focus is so critical and the f 1.2 uncovers what higher f stops hide for focus accuracy.

ok understand, the logic totally difference from canon and sony when out of the box, panasonic still relay on logic and sony and canon already use their AI, you need to do a vlog outside the room with this setting.

Is it just me? Shots from GH4 seems to be much sharper than from GH5... Look at the hair - I also see much more latitude on GH4 shots than on GH5.

I think the GH5 was more attracted to the white board more than me :) This would make me look a bit soft where the GH4 didn't have a choice and it had to focus where I told it. So - agreed :)

To be fair, I think that in the locked down master shot the GH5 is focusing on the easel, and not on Peter.

I was thinking the same thing and it explains why the GH4 looked sharper. But I 'focused' more on Peter's tests when he was holding the camera and moving it around. Those tests were excellent and very sharp. My GH5 has been excellent in terms of AF.

CAF is just ok.. but worst than canon and sony. It has the same problems that every CDAF system has.

Conclusion after 24:11 minutes - the AF is not very good, pretty bad actually. Let's just say if you want to do run-and-gun video this camera is not for you.

Actually you can if you "work" the camera. Let it autofocus, but only where and when you say so. It's like saying a manual transmission is not for city driving, when I know I love a nice manual transmission in a very fast car :)
