The LUMIX GH5 autofocus system is very powerful… and a bit complex. Matt Frazer from Panasonic joins me to explain it in this video.

The Panasonic LUMIX GH5 camera has an incredible new autofocus system which offers options never before seen (in any camera, as far as I know!). But these new options can be confusing. What do they really mean and how should you set them? Join Matt Frazer from Panasonic and me, PhotoJoseph, as we explore this menu system and learn what each adjustment really means. I just dialed my focus speed down to -5 with sensitivity at zero and find that should work for most of what I shoot. Nice to know you can dial these settings to where you need them. This should also be a consideration for people that vlog.

Video guy here. This is why I absolutely love Canons DP AF … I'm super hyped for the GH5 but will all that settings and warnings of "hunting" … well, we'll see irl what that AF System will perform.

+André Undsoweiter There is no hunting. None. Where previous systems locked focus something like every 9 frames, the GH5 locks on EVERY frame.

The GH4 focus every 6 frames with the sensor reading at 240fps, so 40 AF check per second, the GH5 focus every frame reading at 480Hz, so 480 AF check per second, so the GH5 is already 12x faster, plus it has all the new algorithm Matt mentioned and some more he didn't mention, it's really promising. If it really doesn't hunt, I will be very happy. I've seen some micro hunting, in some tests I've seen the focus passes the point and then goes back and lock, so hopefully with the settings tweaks you can minimize that.

Thanks and great explanations! Can't wait to get this camera. These setting should really help me as I want to photograph swallows this year and with these focus settings I should at least have a chance of getting one in focus while its flying.

Wow ok I really hope I can figure this out. I don't want any AF hunting in my videos, I had too much of it in intelligent auto mode on my GH3, I guess the GH3 already had these kinds of AF settings? Shouldn't Locked On and slow AF change be the default setting in the camera to prevent too many people making videos with bad settings that AF hunt? What I'd like is for AF to instantly lock onto the face/eyes of the person I interview handheld and stay right there, never hunt unless that person is showing off a product and if I pan down to that product it should instantly lock onto the product especially to the point on the product where I click and when I pan up instantly lock and stay on the face/eyes of the person I interview. So I guess I would need Locked on and slow AF change, right? Can it be that AF can change super fast only when I click on something new on the screen otherwise stay locked on the auto-detected face or clicked on subject?

Nice ok, and good if you can help Max Yuriev before he makes his next GH5 AF video, and other RU-vidrs who may be experiencing slow/bad/wrong auto focus setting. Maybe we all need to know which should be the default setting for best AF experience in most situations, is it -2 -2 +5 or what is it, Locked on, Slow change and is there a third setting that's important in video to not have it loose focus and hunt..

It would be great if they could somehow introduce these settings to their older models. I do understand their AF system is not to the same standard but it would be good to have some control over how it works all the same. If they can't put it in their current models I would hope this becomes a standard feature in the future.

+Shawn Sobey It's a completely new system so I'm sure it can't be added to older cameras. I don't know the plan of course but it's pretty typical for tech in the flagship camera to trickle down to the other cameras in the future.

Hi Joseph, can you please dig deeper into off camera flash options for the GH5 ? I would love TTL remote and there seems to be nothing out there for Lumix except for optical fudge with small flash on GH5. I would like to go down profoto route .....You do fantastic work and you commit body and soul to this. Great stuff. +David Stewart Hi David! Pocket Wizard recently released TTL units that pair with the Panasonic TTL lights. There's no Profoto TTL solution but I trigger my all-manual Profoto lights with some cheap wireless triggers all the time. I'll spend some more time on strobes once the GH5 mania blows over. Feel free to remind me when the time comes, and thank you for the complements!

Yeah it's a funny way of going about it. They do this with the Focus Peaking as well, where 'High' reduces the sensitivity and peaking effect while 'low' increases it. Bit of a head scratcher to be sure.

+FadedSunEater Ah, for that I got an explanation that makes sense just the other day. It's "high sensitivity" and "low sensitivity". So on high, it's highly sensitive to what's in focus, and therefore peaks on only the sharpest things. In low, it's lower sensitivity so more wiggle room is tolerated.

I think the wording they used and the way they implemented the -2/+2 is totally confusing. Even though you did a great job making this video to explain more in details the functioning of the AF system, I still don't understand it... I may be an idiot I don't know. Anyway, I hope this is not final and it will change in the final release or future update to make it more comprehensible.

My autofocus on my GH5 is not working at all anymore. I can't enter the AFS/AFF menu anymore, and also not AF custom setting (Photo) menu. I don't know what happend, but when i click on them i get the message ''This menu item can't be set'. I followed some video's of you, getting the ideal videosettings and all that, but somewhere the MF mode was fixed, and i can not find where to change that back. Resetting everything back to factory settings did'nt work either. What do i have to do to get my GH5 working normal again? Without AF i can't use this camera for my vlogging. All help very appreciated! Thank you.

Hm, if you did a reset and that didnt fix it then it sounds like a physical problem. Check the lens/body contacts and make sure they’re clean.

So in video, would you still have to set the focus mode in the quick menu to "auto-focus tracking" when shooting a moving subject? Or could you set to "One Area"? Either way you much touch the object on the screen, yes? I've never really played with focus tracking much on my GH3s.

Urgent! In firmware 0.7 FN buttons settings missing switching continuous autofocus presets. Could you ask any Panasonic guy about it? At least I tried it in Video mode, maybe it's available in Photo mode but I forgot to check.

Hi Joseph, I was going through the GH5 training videos again, to brush up a bit and then looked at this RU-vid video about the AF Custom Setting (Photo). Everything Matt said made sense ... until I read the manual on the subject and it totally contradicts just about everything! I tried it out for myself and the book is right; RESPONSIVE setting is exactly that ... being ...faster than Locked On. Faster in focussing on the preferred subject and/or faster in switching away to another (dominant) object coming into frame. While Locked On in the case of the first Sensitivity setting does not mean locked on (focused) on target, but “locked in focal point” without or with less regard for the subject. I might be totally wrong ... ?

I honestly don't recall now what was said in this video vs what's in the manual vs what's in my GH5training.com however this video was recorded before the camera was shipping, so it's probably safe to assume that it either changed since this was released, or simply that Mat had them backwards.

This is most useful for us Panasonic G9 users shooting sports and birds etc. Thanks. However, with regard to the Panasonic G9 in movie mode there appears to be no AF Custom Setting (video) as there is with the GH5 (at 5:35 in your video). If that is the case then what are we to assume are the settings for video that are unable to be customized? If shooting video in the manual mode (M) then do the Set 1, 2, 3 and 4 settings still apply? (We have to choose only 1 of those to use for pics) But then what happens when we choose Movie mode or M Movie mode? I am confused.

Interesting stuff..wonder if you will be able to switch between the sets easily by allocating them to a fn button..just thinking you may want to switch between focusing on one particular car or person in one race or lap but then on another you may want to capture who ever is leading i.e. Dominant as mentioned in the video...

That's a GREAT question. You can put the focus menu in one of the user quick menus, or I'm sure an Fn button, but individual presets, I don't know. In the builds I've seen there were no presets for video (only photo) which is, admittedly, odd.

Can you save more than 1 AF profile for video like in Photo mode or do we have to tweak it or every situation? It would be nice if you can store different settings and access it through a fn button.

Please release some actual footage testing the AF in video.. in the videos I've seen it was mediocre at best, hopefully with tweaking the AF settings and better firmware it will be a lot more usable. I LOVE everything about the GH5 but the AF in video is the only thing I'm still quite skeptical about..... please prove to us once and for all that this has a responsive and reliable focusing system for video!! I WANT TO BELIEVE ;)

Manual focus? ;-) Honestly face detection works great, and put the settings in negative for "locked on", I'd think.

For interviews, based on the information in this video, I'd say put AF speed to -5 (slow) and AF sensitivity to -3 (locked on).. this would keep it locked on the subject with minimal af hunting

Hey I have a Lumix 20 mm F1.7 ASPH lens as well as the metabones adapter with several L lens and the sigma 18-35 and none of them show the ads/aff active (they are not selectable) I have tried just about everything. Any clues out there?

+EquestrianSport I can't speak the the metabones lenses but for the LUMIX lens, there's a hardware AF toggle on the lens, as well of course as the hardware toggle on the body. Are both set to AF?

Do these settings work in the 4K/6K photo modes on the Lumix G9?

I honestly don't remember if these apply to 4K/6K photo or not, since they are kind of a hybrid mode. But the current advice from Panasonic is to NOT make adjustments here unless have a very specific use case. The default settings appear to be best for almost all use cases.

You have to understand that many of these updates are hardware dependent. Even in the latest round of updates (Oct 2018 for G9, GH5 and GH5S), there are updates that are only on the G9 and GH5S because the GH5 has different internal hardware. The G7 and G85 are considerably older. That’s just the way things work.

Not what I was asking for. I found it very interesting to hear from Panasonic exactly how they expect the functions to be set. I watch tons of videos with folks claiming to know what is the best settings for the best results. I was pleased to see that you were able to get it directly from the horses mouth. As I suggested we need to hear what Panasonic says we should be doing with the GH5 now with 2.4. It would be also great that the officially provide tips on how we should use the settings if any on the other models. Thanks.

Oh I see. Well, this level of AF control doesn’t exist in anything but the GH5 series, so there isn’t anything to tell for the other cameras.

Great video, what speed and sensitivity settings should i use for this new update 2.3 if im trying to shoot a educational video with me infront of the tripod moving a bit? i set it to default but my eyes still go in and out of focus? Any other focus settings you may recommend?

This is somewhat old info now. Current suggestion is to disable custom AF and just let the camera handle it.

This video rules, but for whatever reason only the LCD screen focusing seems to be working for me. The AF/AE Lock button does nothing.

As I recall, you have to enable focusing on that button. It’s not on by default. I think.

Indeed. Found it. It's under the menu with the C and Wrench -> Focus/Release Shutter -> AF/AE Lock -> AF-ON. The AF will engage as long as you're HOLDING the button, and stop when you release it.

No wonder there are so many bad GH5 AF tests out there, even more since none of them actually showed which settings they used - and I also doubt they had the time to master the new AF settings anyway -, most if not all people probably didn't even know exactly what they were doing. Hopefully whoever tests the GH5 in the future and posts a review, watch this or read the manual before doing it so it can be properly battle tested because these days people overreact to everything. One bad test and people think they know it all already, the world is doomed and the GH5 is crap, but that's the Internet... hahahaha...

The autofocus in video still isn't reliable no matter what the settings. Contrast is just not as good as Phase detection or dual pixel autofocus.

The GH5's AF implementation is CDAF for both stills and video. This is fine for stills, but it's ill-suited for video. Too much hunting. Even with the newest firmware, my GH5 hunts. If you have even a reasonably narrow DoF, the background will be pulsing like crazy.

Why haven't you done anything on the MetaBones and the GH5? I know Panasonic want to sell their own lenses, but there's thousands of us out here with this setup. Cheers Daniel

Hm, I played with it just a little and I'm pretty sure it does NOT. Auto-gain is generally a bad idea, IMHO.

Yes it generally is. Depends on how you use it. If it saves you from peaking, it's not. If it maximize everything, it's bad yep. There's a "ALC" switch on it and I wonder how it works. I wanted to keep my Zoom H5.. But I realised that I could see the levels on both the monitoring and camera screens and not have to worry to check the Zoom's batteries, rec state, and level. Sold.

What a load of old tosh this turned out to be lol........ I bought the GH5 a month ago and it is truly a lovely camera no doubt about that but this fabulous auto focus crap from Panasonic is not only misleading it is frankly telling lies!! So shame on you Matt Frazer and Sean Robinson the auto focus is poor and you monkeys know it so STOP misleading people and tell the truth. For me I don't particularly care about AF as I shoot manual anyway but I would be well cheesed off if I had bought this baby on the strength of the auto focus naughty naughty Panasonic .....
