That intro! How many retakes did it take for you to stop cracking up?😂 When the GH6 gets that firmware update to be able to record to the SSD, how will we be able to externally power the camera? I have tried several dummy battery solutions which work but restrict the extreme video resolutions just as if using the older batteries, is there a dummy battery model number that you know that works unrestricted? 👍🏾🙏🏾
Normal excellent review. Been using the GH6 with 10-25 f1.7 and have been truly stunned by the 5.7k prores HQ. The way Panasonic implemented prores on this camera is something to behold. I disagree with the unbalanced view of the photo abilities of the GH6. The noisy shadows at low ISO’s was unduly high lighted. The GH6 is SIGNIFICANTLY better than the GH5 in photos. I would rarely take photos with the GH5…it just was not able to keep pace with my old D810. The GH6 is a different world with photos and comes close to the D810. It is a true photo/video hybrid.
@@billdeuster-igniteyourcrea6250 How are you guys doing it? At 800 it's like snow and there's defo some remorse there. Should I be overexposing and taking the hit on the highlights?

Saying it's a hard choice for video for the GH6 vs. the Z9 is a testament to how good video is out of the GH6. Loved the review. Found it very fair and didn't disagree with any of it - as a GH6 owner.
Interesting. I was about to say that comparing the video of both cameras is testament to how good the video is for the Z9. In either case, both must be really good.
I also have the Olympus EM-1 III and I must say that I am very happy with the GH6 when shooting. I have no complaints about noise in the shade. There is also Topaz DeNoise ;-)
Your drill-down review is appreciated. Finally, someone talks about the focus-limiting function. Now, what about near and far focus shifts? Maybe those are waiting for a drill-down from the other side of the aisle?
getting into more video production this year and this is def a system i see myself buying into if they keep improving it like this. paired with the 10-25 and 25-50 glass it is such a capable system i could keep using it for years to come. and i think that is the best you can hope for from a hybrid video camera this affordable.
@@captainkirk3000 find it for the same price, and parfocal, and sharp throughout wide open, and all of the things that the 10-25 does. Now find the body that matches all of the GH6 features for the same price. You literally cannot.
The body's reasonably priced, but the lens... well, it's not overpriced going by how much praise it receives, but I wouldn't quite classify it as "affordable".
Good review, thank you, and a nice camera. A GH6 or another G9, that's the question, or even a GH5 II. I find the video AF of the G9 surprisingly reliable for people, so the GH6 becomes quite the exotic option.
@@BrennanMartin That isn't Live Crop that is what was known as Ex-Tele which is to crop in on the sensor to give you a bit of a zoom when not shooting at maximum resolutions. The 4K live Crop was a feature that enabled you to take a cropped section of the full image, set two points and it will move the cropped section from one point to the other, so it looks like a smooth pan shot, but you don't actually move the camera.
With photography on the GH6, at first I thought the same thing, poor dynamic range and noisy in shows at lower ISOs and I was reluctant to use it for that and just used it only for video. After doing a lot of testing, I have gotten much better photography results with lower ISOs. The way I have achieved it is don't expose for the highlights and bring up the shadows in editing. That's how you can get more noise in the shadows. Instead, since the GH6 uses a 16-bit container for RAW photos, you can overexpose the image and bring down the highlights in editing and retain the highlight detail. I have been able to shoot RAW at low ISOs like 100 and 400, then overexpose just enough not to blow out the highlights. This brightens the shadows enough to reduce the shadow noise when you boost the shadows in editing. There is still a little bit of noise in the shadows, but it isn't bad at all. I don't know if the GH6 is actually using 16-bit colour or just a 16-bit container with a lower amount of colour bits, but whatever the case, the photos I have taken are better than the photos I have taken on the GH5, both in detail and better colour and I do prefer using it instead of my GH5 for photography. The High Res mode is hit and miss though even on a tripod. Sometimes I get very good results but other times I get artefacts in certain areas of the image and other parts look a bit soft, so I'd probably really only use it for static subjects in controlled lighting if I need a lot of detail but I have to test it in that mode to see if it works without artifacts in the image.
@@nicknie8782 It might be 12-bit RAW, I am not sure, but I think Sean from Panasonic said in a live stream they use 16-bit containers which is why you are able to overexpose the images and get the highlight detail back in editing when shooting RAW photos on the GH6.
great review it touches all the key points. I have to be honest I was hoping the photo capabilities would be better to make the ultimate hybrid MFT but that did not happen. The video looks superb is professional level simply and the 4k120 is a unique selling point. Yet I am still hanging to my GH5M2 for photography and general video when I do not need the fancy codecs. The two work very well together but it is a shame I cannot consolidate in one camera yet
It’s really tough to consolidate into one single hybrid camera. I have the G9 for stills and I’m getting the GH6 later for video !!!!! I wish they can combine both Gh6 and G9 features into one single hybrid camera
Had a g9, was waiting for the gh6, ended up going with an S5. Couldn't be happier... Especially with the f1. 8 primes, those are sooo light, theres no weight advantage in mft anymore. Still s5 has noticeably worse build quality than my old g9
The weight advantage of m43 comes with longer or wider lenses. Full frame standard primes are roughly the same weight or slightly less if counting the f1.2 m43 primes, but there is no 70-200 that is as small as the Panasonic 35-100, and the full frame teles or wides are huge in comparison.
@@raksh9 true, but shooting 100mm on mft isnt equivalent to shooting 200mm on ff. People deal with the price and bulk penalty for a reason. With s5 and the primes though, the system can be somewhat compact when you need it to be. Just wish they'd make a 135mm too, the sigma art is heavy and expensive.
@@jasonnowwhat5041 there is no equivalent, 100mm on ff is truly equivalent to 100mm on ff only. You can get the same stuff in view at the same distance with other systems but the characteristics will change. I guess that's what they mean by equivalent, the "zoom factor" can be equivalent.
Damn I thought I was completely sold on finally upgrading from mft to full frame with the Sony A7C or Sony A73, mostly for video quality. Now I'm questioning that idea again.
Take a look at the Panasonic S5 real actual tested 12.1 stops of usable clean dynamic range (the A7S3 is 12.6) and shoots RAW video to a ninja V . In my opinion the S5 is as good or better than the A7s3 in "realistic" low light settings (less noise on the S5). I have the A7S3 and like the S5 more. IMHO the GH series are not great photo cameras they suck in low light ( I have the GH5). The photos from the S5 are on another level compared to my A7III (I have that one too). Right now the S5 with the kit lens is cheaper than either Sony or the GH6. However, if you settle on the Sony you won't be sad they are great. I just like the results from the S5 more. And I like the video from my GH5 more then the A7III. I never use the A7III for video
The A7C and A7iii aren't bad if you don't need much colour grading and shoot in standard or Cine2/4. Plus they're better for photos, at least the A7iii is.
@@stevejones01 Another advantage to the S5 is the availability of both ProRes RAW and BRAW. It gives one the option which is something really amazing imo. Seems to do great in photos too in terms of autofocus, far far snappier than my Fuji X-T4.
1:52 - Or better, DR Boost should have 3 options: On, Off, Preferred. Preferred (or just Auto) would enable the setting when it can be used (in frame rates of 60fps or less). In photography this behavior is automatic on the GH6.
I totally disagree about the GH6 as a not-so-good photography camera! It takes GREAT photos! Yeah, maybe not at ISO 100 but then go to 200 or 400 where the MFT sensors like it better! I have always heard you shouldn't run MFT sensors at very low or very high ISOs! Hell, everything has limits and this is nothing new with MFT sensors! The fact is I have the G9 and the GH6 and thinking about getting rid of the G9 because the GH6 TAKES BETTER PICTURES than the G9! But, the G9 is still a great stills cam or a great B or C-cam! As fas a video goes on the GH6, everything else pales in comparison! One of my many favorite new features is being able to zoom in to pull focus while recording! Game changer for my old eyes I have learned to love Panasonic again! Thanks for the review!
I purchased the GH5 3 years ago after reading glowing reviews. After fighting it for 2 years I gave up on it. Sounds like the focus problem has not been solved. Think I will pass on the GH6
Will Netflix approve the GH6 and Z9? Considering the BGH1 is approved and the GH6 creates a better image than the BGH1, so there's no rational reason not to. The Z9 seems better even than the S1H, which is an approved camera. These things seem largely arbitrary to me.
I think the gh6 has a slight edge on g9 for photos.. Still to close to call however I feel you can use higher ISO on gh6 and get a very clean image just my opinion
I dont know why the noise in lower iso is so bad with the gh6. It could prevent me from buying it as i use my gh5 for photo and video equally. Can someone explain to me why that is?
Why is there no mention of the streaking issues on this camera? Honestly, lots of us rely on your feedback to these cameras before we make a purchase. The GH5 never had this issue.
Hey Gents - hope all is well - I just placed an order for a GH6 on the back on your videos and valued opinions so thank you. Quick question to you both. Clearly you need an ND filter on the lenses, but would a variable ND filter be good enough or would you recommend individual ones? Thanks so much!
@@dpreview it’s not banding, it’s the “red laser of death”. Including using the new firmware. Looks like I got a lemon. So far Panasonic isn’t willing to refund me. Ty for writing back, btw! Love your show!
Continuous AF is very reliable in subject tracking mode. It's tracking not just face but any discernible pattern. You need to tap on the screen or push joystick when pattern is in the frame.
Getting tired of VLOG SLOG mumbo-jumbo nothing beats out of camera video quality it’s all about capturing raw video not spending hours trying to fix things every time I look for reviews on cameras i’m tired of looking at the 60s looking so called cinematic video we’re the colors for example reds look brown
Its a Panasonic, and you ask about pre-amps? LOL its best of the best far as I read and heard, some reviewers did mention the pre-amps but no proper testing. However, unless you are using a 1000 dollar mic on that camera, you wont hear a damn difference between that and GH5 II
@@yawningmarmot Noisy? They are sensitive, lower the gain in camera to like -12db or whatever is best for your microphone. If you have noise in your recordings, its operator fault for not knowing the camera, Panasonic even suggests lowering gain in manual LOL depending on the mic you have. Same is true even for professional recording equipment, your 3.5mm microphones are by design made to be sensitive and give a high output hence the need to lower gain in camera or audio equipment. But microphones that require phantom power tend to be less sensitive as they use power to boost.
The GH5S had cleaner sound than the GH5 so the noise of the latter was suspected to be related to the IBIS. If that is the case Pana likely addressed this with the GH6.
I was sold on the GH6 for phots even after my first use. The 25 mp makes a huge difference. I didn't think I needed any inprovement there until I saw it
Would you please check the shutter remote port , is it working? In my GH6 I can’t take any photos with remote . In PASM mode, when I put cable to the port (not all the way down) it is start recording video and there is no way to turn it off (rec button don’t respond and i have to take the cable out or turn off camera) . When I put cable all the way to the end it doesn’t work at all. Just curious is it just my camera or all GH6
Tempting, but I'm still probably leaning towards the S5 tbh... I could care less about AF since I use 99.9% adapted manual lenses anyway so that's really not an issue as far as I'm concerned. The DR and noise floor in high ISO's are what's important to me. And I have to say sharpness and detail, but I do mainly corporate videos, often in poorly lit conditions, and businesses tend to demand sharp, noise-free images for some reason.
I don't think the S5 is that noticeably better at high iso noise performance than the GH6, or even the GH5II with appropriate lenses. and i doubt very much most businesses will be able to tell about the marginal difference to the noise in the shadows, especially when they dont have a side by side comparison with something that is slightly better. you can just say you want the S5 bc it is cheaper. there is nothing wrong with that. but the GH6 would be the superior video camera between it and the S5.
I have the Sony A7S3, A73, and GH5. just picked up the S5 with the 1.8 lenses and couldn't be happier. The 5.9K raw ticks all the boxes for me. To my eye, the low light video is as good or better than my A7S3. I hate the GH5 for low light, anything over 1000 ISO and it nothing but noise. The photo mode on the S5 is spot on. I bought the S5 four weeks ago on sale, it's even cheaper now. Go figure.
Jordan, watchers of the channel - I have a question for you! As a professional cameraman - who has been operating Arri cameras for the last 10 years and has just picked up the GH6 today - for purely using it for capturing video - is all I have to worry about shooting video at 25 frames per second (PAL) - and using the camera in the improved dynamic range mode (setting ISO to 2000) - keeping the shutter speed to 1/50th - and then controlling exposure like a regular video camera? I have ordered a variable ND so I can keep the light out and hopefully the camera to around F5 - and judge exposure via the wave form monitor - keeping everything below 75ise. Does this sound about right, or am I missing something? I have a trip this weekend and would like to give it a spin. thanks in advance and keep up the great work on this crazy but fun and informative channel!
😓🙏🏻 Hello, I need some HELP from you guys!! I recently went from a Panasonic G85 to a GH5M2 because I thought I was excited to think that I was going to do more video. When I received the GH5M2, much bigger and heavier than my previous one and, looking at other m4/3 cameras, I think I was wrong and maybe an OM System OM-1 would have been the best option... I do some portraiture to ballerinas, sports, etc... better approach, smaller... What do you think? OM-1 or EM-1 MkIII?
thank you. so what I got from this, is that the COMBINATION OF: G9+ Gh5s is a better camera then GH6 if you are not into the hyped marketing. all the bells and whistles that the GH6 has is only that! bells and whistles. and not really applied to the real world unless you are shooting in a controlled environment. this is how I understand those DPReviews about the GH6. If you read between the lines you understand that they want to keep nice relations with the Panasonic marketing. THANKS! I was really going to get the GH6 but I think -as I mentioned above and thanks to the DPReview - that is better stay with the GH5s +G9.
I am loving what I see with the GH6 but while I want the GH6. my head is telling me to save some money and get the GH5 M2 since my biggest need is full anamorphic support, and the GH5 M2 has the advantage of 4K/6K modes. But then the 4K 120 on the GH6 is a big deal… as always, there is rarely a clear cut decision to make.
@@michaelkupfer3723 The GH6 lacks nothing in anamorphic support, and GH5 M2 and GH6 are very similar in that regard, and since my main interest is the anamorphic support then I should save some money and get the GH5 M2. However, for me, there is also the live streaming aspect, which the GH5 M2 does, but the GH6 does not, and the 4k/6K Photo which is not on the GH6. So there are some good reasons for some of us the choose the GH5 M2 over the GH6. Your usage needs may prefer the Gh6, and you will have first rate anamorphic support, plus 4 channel audio, which is really sweet and really useful, and I love that audio button on the top.
I just bought the GH5ii. For me, the significant cost reduction was well worth it. But then, my current camera is an 80D so any 4k is a massive step up. I've also never filmed anything remotely serious so don't listen to me.
@@clonkex The GH5 M2 has some serious advantages - life streaming, lighter weight, etc. But that huge price difference may be its greatest advantage of all.
Perhaps it had trouble tracking the OM1 because it hates Olympus? Jokes aside, I think it doesn't help that the product is just one color, especially since there is only 1 AF system.
thanks for this. I also am thinking of giving up my gh5 for my Nikon z9. It is just a great video camera all around. I just really love my 10mm-25mm lens so much. I wish Nikon would make a couple of lenses like this.
Just a little request for the reviews in the future, can you add a little segment on the video streaming capabilities of cameras, with streaming being really big I would like to see video quality comparison of streaming features, the GH6 can stream video over IP supposedly with a usb-c to ethernet adapter but no channel has even mentioned that feature. Can you output the image to HDMI when streaming over IP, is it possible to record while streaming... is it possible to do all three?? also PC/mobile management systems for brands and so on. If you couldn't guess by the comment live video production is a thing i'm really interested in, and having light small and affordable camera with great image quality is awesome.
I have a video-centric project in mind and also want a new stills camera. The GH6 has everything I need video-wise but that noise issue for photos at low ISO looks terrible. I really hope it's not a baked in hardware issue and that a firmware update could fix the issue. Noise at higher ISOs looks really good, obviously not compared to full frame but great for what I would need.
I am curious on few things: If we film 5.7k without zooming, later crop 100mm or 200mm on certain portion for some nice scene, will it be quite close to APSC or Full Frame sensor normal 4k zoom in to record? What specs of computer need for handling 5.7k or 6k video? I did get answer from some other video reply but need more to confirm it. Also, can anyone give me a good reason why we still need Full Frame sensor 4k camera since we have the 5.7k or 6k 4/3 sensor camera give solid result other than the sensor size reason? Not so good focusing as usual?
I can't say what spec of computer would work well for 5.7K or 6K video, but on my PC I have been able to playback and edit 5.7K and 5.8K videos from my GH6 on Adobe Premiere Pro CC. Here are my PC specs: 1. Dell UP2718Q 27 inch 4K color calibrated monitor 2. MSI Z690 Tomahawk Motherboard - I got it since it uses DDR4 and DDR5 memory is much more expensive 3. Intel Core i7-12700K 3.6Ghz and Arctic freezer CPU cooler. 4. Corsair Vengeance 64BG DDR4 3200Mhz RAM (I think 128GB might be better) 5. Zotac Twin Edge Geforece RTX 3070 Graphics Card 6. x3 1TB 510 FireCuda Nvme SSDs and x1 500GB Nvme 7. Creative AE-7 sound card. I also have x2 10TB Seagate External Hard drives and x2 5TB Seagate External Hard Drives where I store the videos on but I am going to upgrade to more capacity, better and faster storage so I can edit videos faster as those drives are using USB 2.0 and are not really fast enough for editing video.
@@rabbit42007 Nope. It miss important functions: pre-burst, focus stacking, 6k (pro.mode now on OM-1) etc. Those are now on OM-1, this is new G9 II. Are many chances that will be no anymore G9 II because will cannibalise 1 inch sensor Pana series and OM-1 together. But still hope to G9 II.
ouch, the shadow boost in photography at iso 200 (or was it 100 - basically doesnt matter) is a letdown for photographer. My dreams of a G9 MkII or G10 exploded, since with the same sensor they will perform likewise in low ISO :-(
8:10 why did he say "it's just when you're shooting at those lower ISOs you start to have problems with shadow noise" Correct me if I'm wrong, but I always thought lower ISOs= less noise??🤔
It's based on how ISO readouts are done - think of an ISO like a Gain (which is what it's called on proper video cameras). A middle value Gain value will give you the most range both above it (highlights) and shadows (below it). If you are stepping outside of that intended gain, it artificially is reading out and creating shadows it technically can't see. Thus, more noise and artifacting. My suspicions are this sensor was specifically created to be used in the boost function almost exclusively, because when it's not doing a readout of both at the lowest ISO's, (800 for Standard and 2000 for VLOG, both in boost mode), it's reading outside of it's intended DR area.
Panasonic really suck with their autofocus systems, my God, better? Its still catching up to camera systems from 2014, thats just embarrassing. Why is it so damn hard to get a proper hybrid camera these days? Its really bothering me.
