Top notch content upload. Been trying to upgrade my G9 for 2yrs and just ended up buying 2nd 3rd and 4th bodies. Nothing beats it by enough to swap it. Now looking to sell other systems gh5ii or gh6 for dedicated video. Is the 6 THAT much better?

Thank you so so much! Really appreciate it. When comparing the GH6 to G9 for photos, it is that extra bit better, as a professional it comes down to the 14 bit RAW capabilities. If that's not a priority for you then there's no need to upgrade. However when it comes to video, the GH6 is quite superior to the G9, the 10bit all the way in 4K up to 120fps, real LOG if you want. No record limit, and the button layout is a bit more video centric than the G9. If you doing real short videos so you don't need the no limit recording, not phased about 4K 120fps 10 bit and 8bit 60fps is more than you need then you can stick with the G9. Couldn't agree more. Thank you. I never understood the preoccupation with autofocus. ALL of my best shots, photo and video are manual. It's not even close. Creativity flows that way. I have shots that would never have happened if I relied on autofocus.

Yes!! I absolutely despise autofocus LOL to this day I still cannot use autofocus on video, it doesnt matter what system it is, you cannot be completely in control or creative when using autofocus.

Thank you Peter, really appreciate it, as a professional photographer, I find that there's really a few things that are important...a lot of other aspects are personal opinions, and I don't feel that bashing one based on personal opinion is justified. An example is, I love the GH6 size and the G9, but the G9 for me feels amazing with a battery grip on, otherwise its a fraction too small for me, this is preference and not entirely a con...its only a con when you hold the tiny Sony A7iv LOL mannnnn they way too small.

Wow thank you so much! I really appreciate comments like this. 🙌 The GH6 for me is amazing, I prefer having 2 x Lumix cameras than 1 x Lumix and 1 x OM. Also I personally find the support for OM is absolutely garbage where I live, and I've seen others with the same perception in different parts of the world.

The increase in colour depth really is something. I bought the GH6 for video, and I much prefer the G9 body for stills, but I have to say the RAW stills out of the GH6 really are incredible. And it's nice to have a sensor that can exploit the sharpness of the Leica 10-25 and 25-50 lenses.

I do mainly videos with the gh6. It’s a video camera first, then a stills camera. As a video camera, it’s the best in 2022 that you can get in the market for the price point it’s going for, while it’s still expensive, it’s worth it for videos. When I shoot the occasional photos, the gh6 images are gorgeous. I need to check out 100mp raw mode on it.

You're welcome Mark...as I mentioned in the video, the G9 is fantastic...would a client see the difference? NO And I think thats what professionals need to keep in mind...most professionals are splitting hairs, when clients just want a sharp, good looking shot.

Thank you for your G9 and GH6 comparison. It is something I was hoping someone would do. Having a GH4, GH5, G9 and now the GH6 I was most interested in your results. When you already have a number of good cameras it is difficult to justify purchasing yet another camera! I skipped the GH5S as I knew the GH6 was in the pipeline and I am pleased I showed some restraint. I look forward to seeing your forthcoming detailed review of the GH6.

I like the improved editing results of the GH6 you demonstrated, especially the results lifting shadows. I only shoot in Natural lighting and I have trouble increasing ISO without getting too much noise, if using natural lighting has anything to do with the noise, that is, 🙂. Does the GH6 do better in this respect with noise? Thank you for your links to the accessories you like!

Glad I could help. I find the noise cleaner, higher megapixels have "finer" noise. So applying noise reduction works better. I shot for 9 years on the 36 megapixel D800 which didn't have great "low light" capabilities. But because the megapixel was so high, removing noise in photos in post was clean and still detailed.

Perfect example for showing the advantage of 14bit. The gradation of colors / color fidelity and blown out highlights is whats making me think about switching to full frame. This offers hope :) how does the editing of colors hold up at higher iso’s >3200

I just shoot natural in photos, I don't change any configs...in fact if you shoot raw I don't think it would make a difference, possibly only to the Jpeg.

On the GH5 if you want clean footage, anything under ISO 2000 is ok. Get a fast lens, f1.2 or f1.4 and you'll be able to have low ISOs in most shoots.

Owner of G7 and G85, I use my G7 for videos and G85 for photos, but i wanna switch it up, im looking a nice photocentric lumix camera. I wanna keep my g7 as a webcam and make my g85 video focus and get something to dominate photos. Do you think g9 is a great upgrade for photos? (gh6 is mad expensive =/)

I’ve fell for the lie and left M43. I have tried fujifilm Nikon Pentax canon. The g9 is the best refined camera I have ever used. I like those Panasonic menus and the lenses are priced correctly. I will be coming back to m43. Either the g95 or g9

When I started shooting MFT photos I tried my GH5 and couldn't stand it. Turns out my brain was so trained on working with 14bit RAW files I couldn't get the desired images from the 12bit in the GH5. Much happier with the GH6 now...for photos especially.

The GH6 may be better at many things but the removal of 4K/6K is a big deal for me, so even if I eventually talk myself into the GH6 one day, I will still need the G9. Even in 2022, the G9 is one heck of a good camera, and can do some things that the GH6 cannot do.

I thought the same way but it is wrong. The gh6 can do 5.7 k raw in 4.3 format its the same as with the 6k photo mode plus raw, g9 only creates jpegs. You just cant take stills in famera but doing this in photo mode was clumsy anyway. Put the 5.7 k video of the gh6 in sour video ditor and take out even better stills much more comfortably than in the g9

Thank you! Haha I'm a bit of a sneakerhead. So you place a magnet inside the shoe, and then hold it by the stand, the magnet somehow attracts and then suspends itself. It only works when the stand is switched on. Super amazing to see and watch lol

High res mode reduces noise because sensor noise is random. For any particular pixel, it'll read out different values for each exposure (on the same scene). However, average the sequence of values and it'll converge to a mean - the true value. With high res mode, the arrived at pixel value is the average of eight exposures, where the noise components tend to cancel each other. This is really akin to throwing a weighted (crooked or loaded) dice. Say it's loaded so that it favors "7". 7 is the ground truth. It could well be the case that numbers other than 7 comes up on any single throw. Throw the dice eight times and average, however, you'll get a mean that's close to 7. Throw it eighty times and average, you'll get a mean even closer to 7. By the way, high res mode also essentially backs out the Bayer interpolation. Each pixel is literally sampled individually by R, G and B color filters, over the eight sequential exposures. This means high res mode not only provides higher spatial resolution and less noise, but also higher hue resolution.

Robert, that was excellent, thank you. Question: Does the hires mode require higher acuity lenses? I would think so, as it is resolving 4x the number of picture elements (ie, pixels). Would lenses, like even the kit lens, have the acuity headroom?

@@lanceevans1689 Yes, it does but it's not necessarily expensive getting there (and it depends on which kit lens.) Keep in mind it's physically impossible to do better than the diffraction limit. That is with perfect optics, the aperture ultimately upper bounds the finest feature (the Airy disk) renderable. The wider the aperture, the smaller the feature possible to render. Practically, this means if you shoot at small apertures like f11, 20MP or 80MP sensor makes no difference (at MFT size). The lens at that setting can't project the detail, regardless of price. I shoot a Panasonic G9. It's a 20MP native sensor and 80MP in high-res mode. In the 20MP mode, the diffraction limit is about f5.6. For 80MP, the diffraction limit is around f4. The cheap primes like the 20mm f1.7, 30mm f2.8 aspherical macro both benefit from the high-res mode. Shoot these at f4. Set aperture narrower than this and diffraction limit starts to bite. Set apertures wider than this and lens imperfections may start to degrade resolution, but that's really dependent on the specific copy. Experiment. Your mileage will vary.

I may be thinking this from some similar technique back in my reprographics days. Repro lenses, man were those sharp! I used to have a Fujinon 210mm repro that was amazing.

@@lanceevans1689 Maybe? I don't think macros are intrinsically designed for higher resolution. It's just that they tend to be optically good because they're marketed as premium, specialist lenses - and have to back that up. Having said that, I haven't done any rigorous testing. What I do note is that most lenses I use on the G9 renders lots more usable resolution than the 20MP G9 sensor. This includes, the 20mm and 30mm macro mentioned above, but also the 12-35 f2.8 zoom, the gaggle of cheap TT Artisan fast primes, and adapted old Minolta and new Zeiss lenses. I imagine adapted repro lenses would similarly benefit. By not rigorous testing, I mean just plopping the camera on a tripod and shooting down the street. It is very apparent the different distances at which car license plate numbers can be read at 20MP native and 80MP high res modes. I'm on a casual look out for a Panasonic S1R. Its high res mode is 200MP and I think a subset of my lenses can benefit. No, it's not about "need". It's never about need.

I own a7r2 with 24-105f4 G, and G9 with Leica 12-60 f2.8-4.5. The Sony is definitely capable of a higher quality image. BUT, there is something about the G9 that has me reaching for it most of the time.

I think full frame cameras are a lot more geared towards photography, only recently are there really good FF hybrid cameras. But...comparing an insanely old G9 to a modern day Sony or Nikon "dedicated" photo machine, it's insane how ahead of time Lumix was with their G9.

@@RICH_Photography I compare only what I own. A five year old G9, and an 8 year old a7r2. Image quality sooc Sony very hard to equal, much less beat. G9 ergonomics much better. I'll be using my old cameras until they die or I do.

Truth! 120fps is for certain shots only, I think it's more of a "fun" frame rate than a necessity in film making. Also with good IBIS, 120fps slow mo isn't that needed. Most RU-vidrs were using 120fps to smooth out their jittery hand held canon footage lol

Remember the G9 was released in 2017, a 5 year old camera thats still competing with new releases...its still quite amazing. The OM-1 was on my radar, but the 20MP sensor doesnt seem like much of a step up for me, so I went with the GH6.

@@RICH_Photography Well, there is a general opinion that both the old Sony sensor (GH, GH5II, G9, Oly) and the new Sony sensor (OM1) is better with regards to dynamic range in low ISO images than "no name" sensor in the GH6. The GH6 basically only shines in video mode if you use the DR boost mode. Also the "no name" sensor in the GH6 has issues with horizontal streaking in the image when there is overcharge on the CMOS sensor at pixel level. This is also well documented in several reviews.

To get the full picture we have to consider pricing: G9 for 600€ and GH6 for 2000€ in Germany. So the perforcmance-price-relation of GH6-fractionally-better-than-G9 to GH6-3x-more-expensive-than-G9 does not exactly go hand in hand. The video was well made though and very interesting.

Here is a cranky comment: Who likes the music in this and hundreds of related videos? It's that computerized, sampled, canned-sounding music with a distinctively "commercial" sound, by which I mean what you'd expect to hear in advertisements aimed at 20-30 year-olds, but that no one would actually put in their personal playlist. Also, the music is invariably too loud. You adjust the volume for the intro music, and then you have to turn it back up to hear the voice. There's a constructive comment. Other than that, great content.

I have the G9 (the best) and GX80 and m4 / 3 lenses and when GH6 came out I thought a lot, and when I saw the cost of GH6 I preferred to buy the S5 + 20-60mm and the 85mm F1.8 used, all as far as the cost of the only body of the GH6. Now I ordered the 24mm F1.8, I spent more in the end but I think I made the right choice for the low light.

Yes, the S5 is a superb choice for low light shooting. You can't use m43 lenses, but the image quality is worth the extra cost of the S5.

@@markedwards4787 The G9 is still a great camera. If you purchase the v-log upgrade, the 10bit v-log footage can be fairly well matched to the S5. S5 quality is still better, but the gap closes somewhat. For photos, the G9 holds up really well compared with the S5, especially in good light. I shoot the S5 alongside the G9 and it's surprising how well it does. There's a difference, but it's not as big if the light is good. Most viewers won't notice.

@@markedwards4787 For low light stills, you're better off with a fast prime, even the Olympus f1.8 primes like the 25 and 45 are excellent. And their secondhand prices are really economical.

From the reviews I've seen, I don't think so... unfortunately Olympus service in South Africa towards supporting RU-vidrs in non existent so I won't even get a test unit.

GH6 is just not as good for photos as original GH5, let alone the G9. Way more noise and much less dynamic range.

Not sure if you watched the video but the 14 bit RAW images is leaps ahead of the G9. And has far less noise...these tests are literally in the video. And the GH5 was rather poor at photos compared to the GH6. Which I still own. The GH6 is thee best photo "centric" MFT camera for professionals across multiple genrees...and that's a lot considering it's actually a video centric camera.

@@RICH_Photography I literally have both too. In some ways of course the GH6 is better, which is why I was prompted to buy it. But your reply did not address those two issues I mentioned. There is also the shadow drop. Such a pity.

This comparison isn't really useful for someone interested in photography because what it is really comparing are edge cases. There was no real advantage proven for the GH6 over the G9 when using the camera as most owners use them.

Hi Yo. I think I made that quite clear, the G9 is a fantastic camera, and unless you looking for that 5-10% in each shot, the GH6 is for you. One thing I think most creators should ask themselves before jumping into new gear is, 'will the client notice the difference' or 'will my work improve drastically'. I have come to realise that SO many people especially in South Africa, are only delivering Full HD videos to clients still...the GH6 is not worth it for those clients. For me the GH6 has become what everyone wanted, an amazing GH5 with great photos like the G9...I always felt the GH5 was lacking in the photos department.

@@RICH_Photography why do you say the gh5 lacks in photos? It has the same sensor as the g9, same color profiles. I dont see any difference in g9/gh5 pictures. Isent the g9 not just a gh5 wirh worse video specs? I love my gh5 for stills.

@@castielvargastv7931 Hi, the images may look the same but the G9 has more features aimed at photographers. When it was released.. G9 evf had a magnification of 0.83x, with no blackout and a refresh rate that can be set as high as 120fps. GH5 had a lower magnification of 0.73x, a refresh rate of 60fps and will blackout when shooting in burst mode. G9 could be recharged via its USB 3.0 port Top-panel LCD on the G9 which photographers may prefer GH5 would compensate for 5 stops, but G9 compensating for 6.5 stops G9 claimed to be the world’s fastest AF system 0.04sec with better subject tracking G9’s files benefitted from a 25% increase to dynamic range and improved detail retention at mid- to high-level ISOs.(according to panasonic) GH5 offered a top burst speed of 12fps with focus locked on the first shot and 9fps with continuous focusing. G9 can shoot at 20fps with continuous tracking or 60fps with focus locked great for wildlife photos. G9’s unique High-Res mode 80MP I'm not sure how the gh5 updates or gh5s have changed any of the above, but safe to say that G9's features have been designed more around the photographer. Also G9 was still close for video at a better price, especially after all the updates since release.

@@castielvargastv7931 i had both and yes, the g9 delivers better photos than the gh5. not sure why. maybe bc af and stabi are both better, or sth else. i understand it has the updated generation of the processor, so maybe some better noise reduction or...

@@castielvargastv7931 Bing Bong's comments nailed it. But I can say I have the G85 which has a similar and maybe the same sensor to the GH5 as they were always being compared quality wise. And I can tell you that t isn't close to as good as the still image from the GH6.

Respectfully, the GH6 does NOT beat the G9 "in every single aspect!" Here's the thing--there's no doubt that that GH6 is an excellent camera, but it's simply lacking some key photo-centric features that are deal-breakers for many serious stills photographers. Key among these are the lack of a provision for a battery grip (emphasis on the grip--especially for portrait mode and with long/heavy lenses, like the Leica 100-400). Also, regarding low-light: a) how often does anyone actually shoot at or beyond 12,800 and b) advanced NR, such as DxO's DeepPRIME and Topaz DeNoise AI, do a great job of eliminating noise/demosaicing. Even large prints look great from the G9 (so much so that so-called "Full Frame" offers no real advantage and has many disadvantages, but that's another discussion). Also, there are other photo-centric features missing from the GH6 that the G9 and/or OM-1 have, so the bottom line is, yes, the GH6 has a better sensor and some useful features, but it's a GH5 replacement, not a G9 replacement. I'll certainly consider that camera when it arrives, but if I lost my G9 tomorrow, I'd buy another G9 (or even consider an OM-1), not a GH6.

You say, not once but twice, that photocentric things are missing from the gh6. But you then actually only name just the battery grip. (which I m told is coming). So, your comments aren't making much sense. What else is missing? Regarding your wholly baseless comment about how useless fast ISOs are...So you think all camera makers are putting in that work because nobody cares or uses fast speeds? Plenty of shooters use them.
