Panasonic HC-V800
A quick review of the Panasonic HC-v800 camcorder compared with a Nikon D7200 DSLR when used in low light conditions.
Both cameras are fitted with a 29mm lens, both are using the same lighting. The Nikon is set at ISO25600 and the Panasonic on HD mode, I've also got a Hoya Digital UV filter fitted to both cameras to act as a lens protector and both have a shallow shroud (to keep some water and dust off the optics)
The Nikon should be a lot better because of the much larger and better quality sensor, also the optics are better quality and has a larger front element. The downside: the Nikon was about three times the cost of the Panasonic.
The Panasonic is advertised and marketed as having a sensor that is larger than the average camcorder and is set up for low light filming - should we take a look at just how the two compare in the lead mine?

Thank You so much Sir. That is the best video ever seen, especially under terrible and dark condition like this. Keep up good work!

I'm puzzled when you state that you had set the V800 to HDR mode. Your video clearly looks as if it's in HDR but, I found that this mode (for me anyway) produces the grainiest images in low-light. In your above video and the one of the farmhouse interior I can't see anything - it's noise free! As this mode automatically disables practically all other settings, including stabilization, I'm at a loss as to the reason why I'm getting poor results - any thoughts? > Cheers

Thank you. That was really well I executed. I am looking for a video for lowlight for shooting owls and I narrowed it down to this model and thanks for your review I will be ordering the 800.

I have the Panasonic HC-V800 4k camera for church, and it appears to be dark when we stream our services. Are there any additional settings that I can change to make it brighter? We have tons of lights in our church and the camera is still having issues.

I've found that using the HDR mode really improved the low light, you've just got to remember that it defaults to off, so everytime the screen is closed and opened you have to press the HDR button again (it'll say HDR on the screen when it is on). Other than this, make sure the camera is in AutoAI+ mode and not on a setting such as landscape or something. The camera does have a low light mode as well, accessible from the screen menu at the bottom left, you can try and turn this on and this works quite well, except that it'll lose frames at very low light (causing slight juddering to the video). Last thing to try is use a slower frame rate such as 25fps as this gives more 'on' time for the sensor, try and avoid 50/60 FPS at low light as this will half the 'on' time. 25 FPS is TV refresh rate so will look completely fine. Last thing if these don't work, try reducing quality to 1080p 50mbps, this gives the camera more time to process each image (this is the last resort as it is at the expense of image quality). Let us know how you get on.

Great video, any chance you could review this camera as there is very little information about it online? I have an SD90 which is a great camera but i want a newer camera with nicer sharper HD footage. Thanks

Thanks! Ok I'll see what I can do in the next few weeks and part it up on RU-vid. I've had it quite a while now and it's gone through a lot of stick that it was probably never designed for-and it is still going perfectly (water/severe dust etc).

That would be great, just something simple like how it handles panning shots and general low light (like indoors), image quality impressions etc. I'll drop a like on this video because you even considered this request lol. Thanks again

Thanks for the update, I loved my previous Panasonic camcorders but they're 10 years old now and they've made no real advancements in that time, which is a shame. At least Sony are trying with the AX700 and a 1" sensor! Panasonic really need to put the parts of the GH5S into a camcorder and give it stabilization, they would own this market with that product!

Panasonic HC-X800 with a power adapter connected or powered by a power bank, can I shoot video?
@MineExploration
@MineExploration 5 лет назад
The HC-V800 will work when connected so I would assume that the HC-X800 should as well. (Hopefully!)

nice review, how long does the battery last?
@MineExploration
@MineExploration 5 лет назад
The standard Panasonic battery lasts really well and now that it has had a good few charging cycles it will give around 1hr 45 recording time. Aftermarket batteries don't seem quite as good but give around an hour recording. I generally don't change the battery at all for all of my recent movies on my RU-vid site, as long as you close the screen down between shots it can last for a very long time. In really happy with it at the moment, far better than a GoPro in my opinion.
