Thank you for the great review! One of the important factors for me, when deciding between these two cameras, is the difference between a full articulating viewfinder and a tilting viewfinder. I was surprised that you didn't mention this in your review. I think a lot of people doing video blogging or above the head shooting would prefer an articulating viewfinder. What is your take on that?

I agree with MrKuba 105000 , and respectfully Jeff, what I'm looking for is a hands-on comparison betwixt these two cameras. I owned the original Sony RX10 and never loved a camera, yet hated it at the same time. It would be great to see a couple of basic setting changes on both along with your thoughts on use of each. Thanks for putting it out there though.

Great video as always - thanks - Yes both great cameras - I have played with both - but have not bought either yet - but considering it - I have the Canon G3X which I like size wise and looks - and I like the 24-600mm - but the G3X falls short on sharpness in comparison to these two - also it falls short on options - and I really do not like the Canon menu system - and nice that the G3X has Touch LCD - I wish Sony and Panasonic made their cameras more in line with the G3X - more of a mirrorless look vs a DSLR/bridge I agree both the Lumix and the RX10m3 feel very nice in the hand - and for sure Sony has the advantage in a longer zoom and slightly faster lens - light gathering wise - not focus as the Lumix is just as fast in stills focus if not a tiny bit faster I felt - but both good - Of course the RX10m3 is $1600 and the Lumix FZ2500 at $1200 so a $400 difference so a big difference - so the Sony better have something to make up that price difference :) To me - The Pros on the FZ5200 $400 cheaper the 4K photo modes - very practical More Fn buttons with 5 soft Fn buttons Touch LCD - Touch shutter Nicer menu system all touch Flip LCD vs tilt - better for video ND Filters The Pros on the RX10m3 Longer and faster lens So it really boils down to focal length - the Con on the FZ2500 is it only goes to 480 vs 600 - I really like 600mm :) but I have 600mm in my Canon G3X - but really do not enjoy using it as it does not have many options - no 4k - few Fn buttons and not as sharp images as the other two - The ideal camera would be the looks of the G3X with the menu and options from the Lumix FZ2500 and the lens from the RX10m3 :) but that is dreaming so I am not sure what to do - I really do not think the Canon G3X update G3Xm2 will be much of an update - the G9X and G7X have proved that - So is it focal length vs more fun to use - that is the question as the FZ2500 to me has a nicer interface - Also the Panasonic wireless App is much nicer then the Sony App - So a difficult decision - I am leaning more on the FZ2500 for lower price and more fun to use - but that extra 120mm and a bit faster speed is nothing to sneeze at :)

Of course it doesn’t measure one inch. They’re derived from cine sizes. “What are marketed as "1 inch sensors" are actually only about 9 x 12 millimeters on a good day, or about 0.35 x 0.47" - nowhere near one inch. These little sensors have only about one-quarter the area of a typical crop-frame DSLR (16x24mm), and only about one-eighth the area of a full-frame (24x36mm) sensor.” Quoted from Ken Rockwell.

thanks Jeff. Yes, these cameras are the "videocam" of the 21st century. My shooting is mainly video now. I'll buy the FZ2500 I think. In reviews I get the impression that the integration(engineering) of the Panasonic is better. That French Canadian dude (name?) seemed to regard the Sony as "fussy".. and he's a brainiac. I'm getting older so one camera in a tote bag that I can put in the overhead locker on an airplane.. yep. Then I'll spend another $2000 upgrading my computer so I can edit 4K.. then experiment with the extended abilities of the camera. A camera is about collecting and telling a story. By the time I learn how to use the full abilities of either of these cameras the end product will be on a hard drive and maybe my kids will stumble on it one day if they can work out my password... :)

It puzzles me all the talk of stops. As a newcomer to cameras I still don't understand it fully. My fz300 should on paper be better than my nikon b700 but at the same focal length the nikon takes sharper pictures. With no zoom at all the Panasonic is better but with anything over 200mm the nikon images just look far better, slower lens or not.

Hugo, the screen doesn't have sufficient resolution to show differences, and color would be influenced more by the video source than the camera. It's a good thought though. I wish it would work.

This Bridge is pretty popular one for video content. --------------- #Sony #RX10MV : Sony should give us a fully (articulated or tilting) touchscreen, fully touchscreen for focusing and to access the menu as well. Should Sony work quietly on a new menu system? Hope the #RX10MV will keep being the king. Sony just added a lot of crazy specs in the#RX100MVII. ------------------- I think all bridge superzoom cameras should be a good Hybrid tool for stills and videos.. @nightcoder5k 7 лет назад
I have half-dozen of different kinds of cameras, and I'm in intermediate level when comes to photography. I'm learning every day. I found that the FZ1000 is a very good camera for general use. The image quality is sharp and the video is outstanding in its type. I like taking it to events, and I don't have to worry about changing lenses. It's not outstanding in low-light but quite good. Just get close, zoom out and use f/2.8. When convenient, pop up the built-in flash if needed. The only thing I don't like about it is its size; it's quite big. That's why I use the Sony NEX-5R (or A6000) more when I don't need the zoom.

The FZ1000 is a big step up from the FZ300. The sensor is much larger, and the technological improvements are significant since the FZ300. I have been impressed with it. I think you will see the improvements.

I own the Panasonic Z2500 and I am very unhappy with "light gathering ability" of its 1 inch sensor; I recently shot an interior test a ISO 500 and ISO 1000 in 2K . It was UN USABLE because of the noise in the shadow areas and the blacks. Using this camera outdoors at ISO 125 at 4K and 2K produces stunning professional results. I would expect much better low light performance from a 1 inch chip. What is the problem?
@jkahnfilms
@jkahnfilms 7 лет назад
Hi Mark. This is a very difficult question to answer without more details. First, I will assume you are using a shutter speed of 1/50 or 1/60. Next, are you shooting wide open. Finally, I would suggest you start at ISO 1600 indoors. Although it is counterintuitive, using a higher ISO in the dark may actually improve your results. Noise in the shadow areas is symptomatic of underexposure. Your images may loose contrast and detail at higher ISOs, but you need not suffer noise. I recently did a video with the RX10m3 in a church at ISO 1600 and was quite pleased with the results. It did need some perking up in Premiere Pro. (The Sony and Panasonic sensors are VERY similar and may be the same. The processing engines are probably different though.) Many video cams still come with sensors only a fraction of the size of the 1 inch Panasonic. Give the higher ISO a try and see if you aren't more pleased.
@markshepherd8497
@markshepherd8497 7 лет назад
Are you asking me to overexpose the scene by maybe 2 stops, so the background shadow will be more exposed or are you telling me to expose properly at 1600 ISO. ? The shoot that brought up this noise problem was recording a band at ISO 500 at 1/50 sec wide (using a light to illuminate the singer properly) but the dark background "danced" with large amounts of noise. This problem did NOT happen with the two other cameras I was shoothing with, a Canon 5D Mark 111 and a Sony A 6500. It was all shot at 2k HD in MOV files expect for the SOny. All the other cameras looked great except the Panasonic Z2500.
@jkahnfilms
@jkahnfilms 7 лет назад
Lots more information. I'm not surprised you are disappointed. Compared to a ff or APS-c format, the noise should be considerably higher for a few reasons. Check out Tony Northrup's explanation of this phenomenon. www.picturecorrect.com/tips/understanding-crop-factor-are-you-being-scammed-by-camera-manufacturers/

What sony camera with a 1 inch sensor is "smaller" than either of those? No examples or sources cited?
@jkahnfilms
@jkahnfilms 7 лет назад
The most notable are the Sony RX100s, the newest of which is the RX100 m5. It is almost pocket able, but has a much shorter (24-70 35mm eq.) and faster zoom lens. There are several Sony video cameras (like the HXR-NX100 and the smaller AX100) that also use the 1" sensor, but they are a video layout.
@josephlee5562
@josephlee5562 6 лет назад
Sorry Jeff but the video is composite of visual and sound 1:1 , I just can't tell enough how important the sound is. if you can afford $100, buy indoor small diaphragm condenser mic. behringer sells two pairs for around $60 or a single one for $30~50(other brands too). you can buy cheap preamp for $50 if they require 48V power. or just battery powered mic. they pick up sound much much better. right now we can hear your mouth sound, not just the voice. and your tone is very unrealistic and unconsciously avoiding to accept which means audience's brain rejects your video.

@jkahnfilms 7 лет назад
Hi Luis, I almost always take the Sony RX10 m3 with me for the extra zoom length and I like the aperture ring on the lens barrel. However, the Panasonic FZ2500 is 95% of the camera and cheaper. It has the advantage of ND filters too. So it pretty much depends on how you use it. (Also, I would be surprised if both cameras don't use the same sensor, so quality should be very similar)

Sorry to say that, but this video is useless. You just talk about the specifications that everyone can read on the Internet and that everybody interested in these cameras already knows. There is no comparison of these cameras available and you are one of few people that have an occasion to do that. But instead you just talk about obvious things. Theoretically Sony RX10 III should record much better 4K video, because it does a 5K full-sensor readout, while FZ2500 only records 4K in 1.5x sensor crop (which is a huge disadvantage of this camera). That should mean much better IQ, low-light performance, "grade-ability" and bokeh on Sony in 4K. I would love to see a detailed side-by-side comparison of 4K video on these cameras - in various conditions, with high ISO and with big crops added in post to see the difference. I know many people are interested in such a comparison and you can be first to do that.
@MrKuba105000
@MrKuba105000 7 лет назад
As I have replied you under other video, the difference between 480 and 600 can be easily checked in Nikkor Lens Simulator and nobody needs a test for this. You also have to remember that due to 1.5x crop in 4K, FZ2000 has max EQ focal length of 720mm.
@jkahnfilms
@jkahnfilms 7 лет назад
Thanks for your opinion. My focus is for the consumer upgrading from a p&s or an older bridge. Consequently, I didn't get very technical. Also the 720mm only applies to 4K video and not still photos, just clarification for newbies.
@MrKuba105000
@MrKuba105000 7 лет назад
Of course only for 4K video. However I don't know who would buy this camera for photo. It has the same image sensor as FZ1000 and similar image quality (first tests even show that FZ1000 is slightly better for stills), every improvement is for videographers (and the price is 2x higher). Also for the price of FZ2500 you can get a DSLR with 2 lenses having similar focal range and offering waaaay better image quality.
@cjw9979
@cjw9979 7 лет назад
I dont agree at all. If you wanted the same coverage for the money of a F2500 you would end up with a cheap entry level SLR, cheap kit zoom and cheap tele zoom. Nothing would be premium, it would be larger and likely the lenses would be a lot slower. 5.6-6.3 range for the tele lens. So this will negate the larger sensor... or go some way towards it anyway. I have 3 FF cameras and If I were choosing I wouldnt hesitate picking a 1 inch bridge camera over a cheap slr. They're nasty.
@MrKuba105000
@MrKuba105000 7 лет назад
Slower?? Do you know what equivalence is? f/2.8-4.5 on 1" sensor gives you the same amount of light as f/7.5-12.1 on FF (or f/5-8 on APS-C). For the price of FZ2500 you can get Nikon D5300 + AF-S 18-105 VR f/3.5-5.6 + AF-S 70-300 VR f/4.5-5.6 (27-450 in 35mm EQ), so you have f/5.3-8.4 instead of 7.5-12.1 (in 35mm EQ) + in DSLR lenses max F changes almost linearly, while in FZ2500 on 80mm you already have max f/4 and on 200mm max f/4.5. Also you have possibility to buy fast primes later in case of DSLR. I have both FZ2500 and DSLR and love both, but it has to be said that 1" sensor camera will never beat a DSLR for stills (unless it has something like f/1.8-2.8).
