Here is the HLG to Rec709 Driftwood LUT for you all to use for FREE: www.dropbox.co...
NB Read below info for tips how to render HEVC/insert correct HDR flags etc.
New HDR Functionality recording with HLG. See the HDR video on Panasonic site at: • Panasonic LUMIX GH5 4K...
Music by Nick Driftwood.
INFO:
HLG has similar gamma characteristics to SDR in dark range (processing in blacks similar to BT.709 below 100 nits), then changes to a log gamma above ~14 nits.
Extends log processing of displays high brightness peaks up to 2.5 to 3 stops to mitigate blown-out or clipped whites.
Can be displayed unprocessed on an SDR screen as EOTF adjusts system gamma to correct for viewing environment (10 to 500 nits)
Does not require scene mastered metadata unlike PQ (HDR10) or Dolby Vision.
Is best for Live production and fast turnaround HDR as you don't need to grade too much if you've exposed to use the extra display stops correctly.
To facilitate HLG production the BBC R&D will announce to broadcasters a series of licensed LUTs (Lookup Tables) implementing a range of key format conversions from;-
• BT.2100 PQ (1000 cd/m2 peak) to BT.2100 HLG
• BT.2100 PQ (4000 cd/m2 peak) to BT.2100 HLG
• BT.709 (SDR) to BT.2100 HLG (Display-referred mapping maintaining SDR "look")
• BT.709 (SDR) to BT.2100 HLG (Scene-referred mapping for matching cameras)
• BT.709 (SDR) to BT.2100 HLG (Display-referred up-conversion for SDR "look")
• BT.709 (SDR) to BT.2100 HLG (Scene-referred up-conversion for matching cameras)
• BT.2100 HLG to BT.2100 PQ (1000 cd/m2 peak)
• BT.2100 HLG to BT.709 (SDR)
Additional conversions may be added too.
These LUT variants offer support for both “narrow range” and “full range” PQ signals, as well as options that allow BT.2100 colour primaries to be used with hardware LUTs that usually assume BT.709 colour.
Driftwood and James Miller are preparing some of our own LUTs for HLG transform. You will need to at minimum have LUTs to convert Rec709 material to 2020 and vice versa if you mix a timeline's material to one or the other.
Driftwood was monitoring Rec2020 with the EZ1002B Premium UHD Televison
You Tube appear to be still working out how to handle the HEVC (with HLG flags) uploaded files. Lets see how this one above looks...
WORKFLOW:
I output on a Mac to Pro Rez 422 10-bit (you can use any 10-bit or lossless package on your computer)Iand then recoded to bring the size down and add flags using HEVC. I used FFMPEG which is freely available to Windows, Mac and Linux users to code my HEVC files and to add the necessary HLG and Rec2020 flags which will trigger HDR TVs to play automatically the content in HLG. Here's an example command line (make sure you download the 10-bit version of x265lib.
Mac users should download FFMPEG/RubyonRails/Homebrew to install a compile - Beginners help is here www.moncefbely...
or here: github.com/flu...
Install X265 here macappstore.org...
Windows Users: www.wikihow.com...
Its easier to use command line until Handbrake gets updated to use HDR flags properly.
Example FFMPEG code to generate a basic good looking HEVC file with flags:-
ffmpeg -y -i /Volume/Drive/Inputfilenamel.mov -c:v libx265 -x265-params level=5.1:vbv-bufsize=60000:vbv-maxrate=60000:crf=20 -pix_fmt yuv420p10le -preset fast -color_primaries bt2020 -colorspace bt2020_ncl -color_trc arib-std-b67 -c:a aac -b:a 128k /Volume/Drive/Export_filename.mp4

Thank you for these LUT's! They look and behave really ace! Super helpful. I was on the verge of giving up on the 2020 to 709 workflow just now after a few hours of trial and error. Basically grading 2020 footage on a 2020 colour space timeline is lovely, and easy. It looks wonderful. But taking HLG footage into a rec.709 timeline looks and and behaves totally different (Final Cut Pro). But with your LUT in front of the workflow, everything looks good, and is easy to control.

The only SDR displays that HLG is backwards compatible with are BT.2020 displays, and there aren't very many of those. Practically speaking, anything mastered for HLG will need some kind of conversion or separate output and grade for SDR. E.g. RU-vid lets you embed a LUT to do the HDR to SDR conversion, and they have a default LUT if you don't embed one yourself.
@driftwoodtv

Great points Balazer. Good to see you again. There's a good read here about it from last year: www.mysterybox.us/blog/2016/11/7/how-to-upload-hdr-video-to-youtube-with-a-lut As to the HLG transfer characteristic: FFMepg supports HLG B67 transfer on the CLI as does Handbrake Transfer= command which you can put in the Additional Options in the GUI/CLI.

Sorry but, please I have 2 questions-1)I dont understand exactly- For my opinion Rec.2020 is colour gamut not about dynamic range, but of course HLG mean high DR + rec.2020, so than when I play HLG video to my PC display ( graphic monitor ,perfect but without HDR or so....) from HLG files in PC , than I will loose colour gamut rec.2020 but not dynamic range, is it true or false?Or must I export video first in davinci to another video format - for example MPEG or so to save DR?Colour gammut is not important to me,only DR 2) what is your opionion about real usable DR of GH5 ?and is bigger in Vlog od in HLG, or it is the same? I am thinking about GH5 (or maybe GH5S now) because a lot of things(codecs,60p...), but I am using now A7RII (huge DR)and thinking logically about sony A6300/A6500 (which by a lot of people has bigger usefull DR, sony claims even 14 DR,I think but in reality it could be less -cca 12DR -as was testing on cinema5D for example) thanks for your opinion!Nice video, look veeery good, thanks!

Dear Nick, Many thanks for this lovely clip "Isobel". I love it... I watched it via my google chromecast on my mew 55-inch OLED Panasonic TV (TX-55EZW954). It is a great pleasure to see it in HLG-format. When the YT-clip starts, the TV automatically switches to HLG (>> infotext on the TV) Let me ask three things: - did you use the free davinci resolve 14 ? - wich lenses did you use for the GH5 - I'm a windows user with a GH5 (FW 2.0), so it would be very interessting in a more detailed workflow description... again many thanks and greetings from Hamburg...

Rec709 timeline was to demonstrate editing on a rec709; monitor. Hardly did any grading. There's no laws to heading HLG ie u can still grade it even though the initial transform looks good HLG was created originally for live HDR delivery.

@Nick Driftwood, it unfortunately appears you don't care to reply to most comments under your videos, but I shall nevertheless ask a pertinent question anyway in hopes you may at least grace me with an answer. Do you know why Panasonic has locked HLG on the GH5 to the Legal range of 64-940 (in 10-bit) rather than giving us the Full 0-1023 range? I can choose the full range when I shoot Cine-D and other color profiles, so the limitation on HLG is baffling. I'm also curious if they couldn't just fix that with another GH5 firmware update. Thank you.

A little off topic but you seem to know a lot so I thought I'd ask. Is there a big difference between using the updated 400 mbs 10 bit v-log vs. 100 or 200 mbs or whatever it was before? I heard somewhere, 400mbs would allow true 10 bit recording. And 10 bit recording would allow true log profile.
@driftwoodtv
@driftwoodtv 7 лет назад
Hi Bae 10-bit 400Mbps all I (or all intra) is just the codec compression prediction technique - and 10-bit is 10-bit whether its Long GOP or GOP1 All Intra! People sometimes swear by All intra because of the compression technique (a GOP of 1) compresses each picture from itself using neighbouring macroblocks (imagine the whole picture is broken down into sets of blocks whilst compression is calculated) where as Long GOP utilises a combination of Intra and predictive frames taking prediction from previous frames of macroblocks that haven't changed. Intra consumes more memory because of its picture to picture compression whereas Long GOP utilises more arithmetic and processing to code the residual. Both can look as good as each other, though I recommend using Intra for MLS,MCU,CU shots and Long GOP for high detail wides - I check with streamparser programs. Very high detail Intra recordings can sometimes use less fidelity quantisation because of memory limitations (hits the 400Mbps ceiling!). Thats why. 10-bit is where you should ALWAYS be when using V-Log L and HLG because you're making use of the bigger headroom - luminance detail and chrominance depth data levels - that 10-bit offers you.

Hi Nick!Are there any guidelines for correctly exposing when using hlg profile?Like white point,grey point etc...
@driftwoodtv
@driftwoodtv 7 лет назад
Its very similar to how you normally would expose for Rec709. Except you have two overlays to help get the HDR right. Get your highlights right in mode 0 LUT (which is the LOG end of the curve so adjust any for highlight blowouts here) then use Mode 1 LUT (kind of emulates how its going to finally display - so adjust exposure for the subject matter) to adjust for overall picture. Take notice of the change in brightness.
@moreapropos

@@driftwoodtv Great video! On exposing, is Mode 0 now Mode 1 and Mode 1 now Mode 2? I am not sure I understand how you'd do the exposure. If you bring the aperture down in Mode 1 (highlights), then switch to Mode 2 (subject), and the subject is too dark, and open up the aperture, aren't you simply undoing what you just did? Any thoughts appreciated.

@driftwoodtv
@driftwoodtv 7 лет назад
Only shoot HLG for turning around HDR Live or for work requiring little grading work I would suggest. it almost looks perfect straight out of the box - and in a way, HDR was always about trying to improve the human visual perception in displays. Don't forget, V-Log L in 10-bit is for detailed grading - its a wider curve than HLG which, if you like, sits in the middle of SDR and Log.

We had to include it for the story, the transformation from city to countryside and dark to light, from there we exposed for daylight accordingly.

What is rec.2100 and what is the visual difference between it and rec.2020 in Davinci resolve
@driftwoodtv
@driftwoodtv 5 лет назад
Rec2100 is the higher extension of the rec2020 standard to incorporate two matrix transfer and nonlinear transfer functionality and gamma correctionfor the new breed of Dolby/PQ HDR10/+ and of course HLG HDR. Colour primaries are exactly the same but luminance values are kept constant in a new development to support all the main HDR breeds. If you shoot in rec2020 HLG, colour wise it will still look the same as rec2100 but you will see more scope for a gamma control of the luminance slope.

would you recommend shooting hlg when exporting on youtube or facebook, where there is no hdr. yes or no and why?
@driftwoodtv
@driftwoodtv 7 лет назад
Yes. However, I need to know how YT & Facebook are managing their interpretation. Its easy to get it wrong with the colour transfer! I think things will clear up pretty soon... In theory HDR and HLG works very well especially if you have a HLG compatible screen when mastered correctly. Its a natural slide up to seeing more details in the highlights. Keep an eye on the RGB levels, and make sure you're within legal gamut limits if you are converting down from Rec 2020 to 709 or 601 colour. I believe Davinci Resolve 14 only supports HLG/HDR in Studio edition... I could be wrong but I don't use the free non-studio version. Resolve's colour management is very good as it brings the data levels in automatically to full range (unless specified in preferences differently) to full range luminance. On output it is seamlessly converted to what you require .

HLG has the capabilities to capture the most dynamic range as possible, hence the HDR feature on HDR TV's, but you can get away with HLG without using HDR TV's, if you're very good in post that is. Don't forget it's a LOG format, you can always convert the input bt2020 to a rec709 output, and play with some expensive LUTs, Osiris, ImpulZ and Linny for example. Shoot in 4K, and you will have yourself an awesome film. Iyi günler.
