Excellent tutorial! Thanks. I work daily with the GH4 since 2014 and with the GH5 since 2017. Yesterday I bought the GH6 taking advantage of a great deal at a nearby electronics store and the Panasonic Cashback. I will probably sell the dear GH4 and GH5 and buy the GH5ii to use as a second camera, alongside the GH6. I've been working as a professional photographer and videographer since 1996 and I really can't understand the countless Reviews criticizing the MFT system. Having worked with practically every possible format, I really consider MFT to be my favorite format. I work in MF, old school, and mostly use Voigtlander Nokton lenses, which allow me to control focus and aperture easily. However, testing the AF system, and now with the added area limiter for AF, it sounded pretty good! I'm still learning some new features from the GH6. As negative points, the GH6 short battery life draws attention and the DR Boost only starts at ISO 800 (forcing the use of ND filters also when not disseres) and limits the use of other Frame Rates for slow motion.
Great video. Really easy and enjoyable. Thanks so much. I recently got this camera and this video is helpful and really nice to watch. When shooting in FLAT how much would you just the levels afterwards. Sorry if this is a silly question. This is my first deviation from a more auto setting on previous Panasonic.
The good thing about using Flat is you can adjust it however you like. If you want to let the camera get you a great result without a lot of work, Natural is also great. Flat allow you to adjust the shadows, highlights, contrast, and saturation a lot more. I am going to do a video about how I grade footage, it'll be a lot easier to explain than on a reply :)
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Thanks. I think I jumped the gun in shooting with flat mode or I had focus issues. I've tried so many shots but can't seem to get it crisp. I look forward to your next video on it. 👍🏻
Truly a monster camera for natural history video shooting...you'd need to go $4000+ for better. Slow motion and built-in telextender modes are great. I never need AF in video (my main need) and it does more than good enough for my photo work. Been a GH shooter since GH2. I've used Sony recent cams and they are great, too.
I've had GH6 for a couple of months. It will be a great tool for years to come. Computational photography kit will make it old school in a few years, but if you can't tell a story with this camera, you need to learn about storytelling. You do a great job. Thanks
Hello Geeky, thank you for sharing your very interesting video. Unfortunately my english is not good and I'd like to ask 2 questions please: 1) I have the GH6. I make 4K videos with V-Log. My lens is Leica 12-60mm. I sometimes need to use AF all the time and I don't have the time to enter the Menu and choose the right icon in the AF Mode panel every time. I shoot everything but especially the people who are working in front of me. What do you think is the icon with which I can do everything in AF? 2) How can I configure the Speed and Sensitivity? I thought Speed +3 and Sensitivity -3. THANK YOU.
Got a question for you. How do you set up the GH6 so it will trigger the Atomos Ninja 5 when you hit the record button on the camera? I know it has something do with the timecode on the camera, but I have not been able to figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
There’s a setting in the HDMI output options I’m pretty sure. I don’t have a ninja but I’m almost certain I’ve seen that option from the HDMI output options.
How can I avoid the GH6 splitting my concert files when I need one long continuous clip? I did a test with my 3 GH6's and using a CF card, it ran for 2 hours without splitting. The other two camera I used only SD cards for the test, and both files were slip into several equal smaller clips. Do you know anything about this? I am filming a concert on Saturday. Thank for all the suggestions.
The plot thickens...Today I did a another test in 4K and in 1080p. Shooting in 4K...it will run long. Shooting 1080p...it is segmenting. Extremely curious.
It gives you a more traditional cinematic aspect ratio and look, but it’s not really required unless you want that look specifically. Give it a shot and see how you go 😊
I bought a gh6 and I have a strange problem. Well, the recording on the card starts 2 seconds after pressing the shutter. Is it normal? My card is ANGELBIRD AV PRO CFexpress SE 512GB
Hi. I feel more prepared to buy the GH6 after watching this video .Great video! Do you know if and by how much the extra 5MPs on the GH6, compared to my G9, will reduce noise at higher ISO photography?
Thank you! Great video. Any idea how to put this camera into photo mode, and manual so you can control aperture, shutter and iso independently? I am in M, and it's stuck in auto. My GH5 doesn't do this. Pulling hair out!! Thanks for any advice.
I want to teach videography and use a good camera... The question is: 1.- Buying a GX85 very compact camera in a low price and record quality video with: "Atomos Ninja V" or: 2 .- Forget about the compactness of the Gx85 and go for a more expensive and newer camera like the GH6 camera and not use the "Atomos Ninja V". it is an easy or difficult choice, for a person as experienced as you?
Hi Shane, you helped me buy the GH6. My 6 has the original firmware (1.0) Can I skip any of the updates? The Panasonic site does not even show the first (1.2) update, maybe I can go directly to 2.0? Any idea? Thanks!
Updates 1.2, 2.0 were not there. The site seemed to suggest that if cam was BEFORE 2.0, then go to an update called 2.1/2.2 combined update. EXTREMELY unclear, anyway I took the risk and went from 1.0 to the 2.1/2.2 It went through all the motions and now the firmware shows current version 2.2 Are you saying that if it went this far, it worked? If sequence was incorrect, it would give error message?? Thanks for taking this time Shane!
@@MichaelBrazdaFilms Usually if you can't install a firmware, the camera won't proceed from the first screen - it will say "Install this or that firmware first".
great video, a question about audio, does GH6 record only audio in modo mode? I need stereo mode with two channels but output videos are only in mono (using internal o external mic).
I dont think there is any camera in this price range that has better iq in video than gh6. S5 is a very good camera tough. I will upgrade my gh5 to gh6 and i also want s5 as it is a better photo camera
The GH6 has a really great look to it but the S5 image quality is premium as well. The biggest difference will between the lenses you shoot with. F1.8 on the S5 will look amazing compared with F1.7 on MFT but the GH6 has the best out of camera look I've seen from MFT. It is an upgrade over the GH5, and GH5II.
Literally all of these settings can't be changed in my current record mode and I have no idea what that means. Would have been lovely to get the pre-pre amble for the noobs.
I use the Jupio PowerVault III Wireless PD successfully even though it doesn’t charge while recording. I put the battery into a small bag and use the sort usb c cable that’s included. Battery pack is great for iPhone too as it has USB-C, USB-A, USB micro and even Thunderbolt. Shows voltage and percentage on display 👍🏻.
Thanks first of all for sharing your insights. I must say however that without constantly pausing the video it's nearly impossible to follow. Your delivery parallels the style of Gerald Undone. Neither one of you gives your viewers any chance at all to comprehend what it is you have said before you move on. The best way to follow both of you is to fully understand what it is you are saying before you say it which obliterates the need to watch except for a quick review. Please consider turning off rapid fire. In the meantime I recommend watching your presentations at 75% of normal speed, although what is really needed is a presentation tailored for viewer comprehension. Rapid fire notwithstanding, please accept my sincere thanks for your effort to inform.
Thanks for the feedback. When there's so much to cover I don't want the video to go for an hour so it's feature and settings over pace. :) I have anther much more slower paced tutorial for the S5II coming up this week.
One of the very best camera tutorials on RU-vid. Re: GH6, I wish the battery life was not so lacking. I cannot get through even to intermission filming a concert, and if there is no intermission, it is really a problem. I have bought 2 external batteries and dummy battery, and have yet to fin the right combo for the GH6 to work properly. Anyway, your are a superb communicator.
Thanks for the kind words. You can USB-C power this camera if that helps when out in the field. I found the recording time is decent at 4k 25p but probably not quite as good as the GH5II.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy this is what I've done, when not around a wall outlet I'll attach a powerbank to the camera. This gives me a good amount of filming time.
Still love my GH5! Made the jump to full frame but will forever love the GH5. I was listening to Panasonic person and he has all the GH's and said, Wait For GH7. Maybe I might consider that. Good Luck!
Fantastic video for getting acclimated to the camera. Muscle memory is a big help in this industry and switching from the BMPCC 4k to the GH6 was a very big change. Great vid.
Hi! I make broadcast and webinar - interview style. At last time I think my zv e10 is very poor image vs gh5 2/gh6 Still I go to Sony 7iv or go to LUMIX system? I really like image quality of them
The ZVE10 is a good little camrea but it's handicaped in so many ways compared with the GH5M2 or GH6. That said, it comes down to the best lens you can afford for any system to make the most out of it. The user-experience with Panasonic is the best and I own some high end Sony cameras as well.
Hi!! How to get to change the autofocus modes with the top button of the wheel/menu? In your 12:20 frame, there is also no option for "AF Detection ON/OFF" nor "AF Aera", and if I want to change the options as quickly as you do, it is not possible in my GH6. Many thanks in advanced!
