The i.s. Lock feature for video is something that alot of reviewers are missing in their reviews. This feature crazy helpful for shooting video without a tripod, it is to bad most reviewers are not pointing out this feature and showing how well it works for non-panning shots.

your vids are always helpful. as a g7 user, thank you for the effort and the sharing. i really wish that panasonic would have offered mic and headphone ports. to design decent 4k vid options but then ignore audio seems so foolish. that said, i am an appreciative subscriber. thumbs up.

Hey Gordon, I've used this Camera and just love all that it packs at a great low price. QQ I just used it for filming a person on an auditorium, and the overall picture looks ok but the face looks dark. Lighting is coming from above. I also used my phone and it does HDR to the view giving a nicer look (pulling the darks closer to the midtones). Is there a mode to try to emulate the HDR? We dont have the time or budget to correctly process the Video, so what we capture is what we publish. Any ideas will be highly appreciated. JG

Great video as usual, This is interesting, how does this video selection system work, where it does not require changes between NTSC and PAL? How do they make all of the frame rates available without making changes - Have they just scrapped the TV mode systems altogether and just encoded in MP4? Is the higher MOV format still available? It would be great to be able to get shot of the TV encoding as it is a real PITA when changing frame rates in the Canon DSLR. The same goes for that viewfinder, how great it would be to have something like that on the DSLR - Surely the technology is there, but would be additional costs to digitize the output from the mirror.

I am really impressed of how much work you put in these reviews. You certainly deserve your coffee........ Just a quick recommendation. As you make a big effort to document all aspects of the cameras under review and your site name is camera labs you may consider to have a couple of standard shots which you take in different iso for example so there is also a database for comparison. Thanks again

Thanks for the review, Gordon, lot of good bits there. Just one question - how is the aditional crop factor of the GX9 compared to the GX85? You've mentioned 1.26x in GX9, do you know the crop in GX85/80?
@cameralabs

Yes, the crop on the GX80 / GX85 is around 1.1x. It's in my review at cameralabs.com

Mate, love your reviews. Quick Q, does the 'e-stabilization' in video make a huge difference when shooting hand held? We all know ibis is really good, but the e stabilization gives 1080p a crop. What are your thongs on switching it off and just using ibis?
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 4 года назад
I tend not to use it if the IBIS is good enough, as there can be cropping and warping artefacts. I don't recall if I tested it much on this model - if I did it would be in the review!

I completely agree with Kopetefish (what a great name!). This is basically a GX85 with a 20mpx sensor. I really don't understand why some many people who were on the fence about the GX85 (which I've owned for almost a year and a half, and have been using professionally since day 1) are recommending the GX9 as "great value". It's not when compared to the GX85. The GX85 is becoming more and more of a killer deal, though!
@TheParadoxy
@TheParadoxy 6 лет назад
Especially when it comes to video the Gx85 has less crop in 4k and the guys over at eoshd have a hack that allows CinelikeD on the Gx85. Once I found out about the extra crop, there was no way I'd consider switching to the Gx9. The Gx85 also has better battery life than the Gx9.

@DerVagabundli
@DerVagabundli 4 года назад
It's just a minor upgrade to the gx80/85, but if you don't have one yet, o think the Gx9 is a great option, especially when you can get it used. Upgrades are mainly the 20mp, Bluetooth/WiFi and the tiltable viewfinder, which are just nice-to-haves. Probably wouldn't upgrade from a gx80 though. As I had none before and I was able to get the Gx9 used with 12-32 and boatload of accessories for 500€, I'd absolutely recommend it

Finally i would like to have your opinion. I am new to photography but i have a couple of friends of who are good at it and i got fascinated. So i started to learn the basics and used a compact camera that have manual capabilities to train them. So i am now in the process of getting a proper camera for not more than $1000 give or take. My ideal camera would have been a gx9 in a gx800 body or a xe3 with OIS but with extra features of the xa5. As i have children decent video is important as is easy operation. I am using a TZ90 which i got as gift almost 1.5 years ago and i like the control system with the touch screen and features but the IQ now that i can see better is ok...ish. However i am really fascinated by the fuji colours, the size especially weight is also good but i am scared mainly by the lack of OIS, Finally total size is a major consideration as i don't see my self carrying a whole camera bag around. I want to be able to have my camera with a couple of lenses with my in a small pouch and use it whenever i feel like. The Pana GM5 which was followed by the gx800 with the small lenses would fit the bill, but they don't have any ois. So it comes down to these options GX9 or XE3, gx85 or GX800 with the view of getting the new GX900 or GM9 or similar? or something else. Any help will be highly appreciated. Best
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 5 лет назад
Why not get an XE3 with a lens that has OIS?
@Djk0t
@Djk0t 5 лет назад
This is definitely an option. Is the xe3 so much better in image quality than the gx9? To me expecially the low light performance as demonstrated at dpreviews is outstanding but not idea whether it is the same difference in real life.
@Djk0t
@Djk0t 5 лет назад
Weight wise how do they feel. My intention is to get the xe3 with the 18-55 lens and then get the pancake lens for portability or the gx9 with the 14-140 and get the 20mm 1.7 pancake. The gx9 i find also as a kit with the 12-32 plus 35-100 lenses for 100 less than the one with the 14-140. The gx80 however is a steal with the second combo at almost ½ the gx9. Is the gx9 IQ so much better to justfy the price?

Hi Gordon.. would you say that Panasonic has changed/improved jpegs in GX9 compared to G80/GX85? I could not see anything related to that in your review on the website. I am not bothered about the number of megapixels. I am looking for a smaller mirrorless, that has good IQ (have A7Riii but sometimes that gets heavy!) Thanks...
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 6 лет назад
Yes, the processing is a newer generation that looks more natural and also has new Black and white options. And as you know, you get an extra 4 Megapixels. Overall I'd say it's a bit better in image quality than the GX80 / GX85, but it's a bigger step over the G80 / G85 as that one is 16MP with a low pass filter, so not as crisp as this new one.

The Cinelike D profile with everything turned down is fairly flat. You can check out the original sample via my review at cameralabs.com - as for audio, there's no mic input, so you'll need a separate sound recorder and mic. I use a Rode NT USB for voiceovers in my home, or a Zoom H2N when out in the field, although a lapel / lav mic would be best in that environment.

Hi, I just got my gx9 with a 14-140 It I can’t get the dual, I.s. Working . Did u get it to work? What lens did u use for the dual i.s.?
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 6 лет назад
All of Panasonic's latest lenses support Dual IS, but some older ones need a firmware update, while a handful can't be updated. I think there's two versions of the 14-140mm. if you have the newer f3.5-5.6 version with Power OID, it should be updateable to support Dual IS. Check Panasonic's support website for firmware updates. When it works, you'll see an icon for it on the screen - there's nothing to enable or activate otherwise.

Hi Gordon. Thanks for the review. I think that the GX9 would actually make a good backcountry backpacking camera. Small, and I will assume, lightweight. It would have been a great step up for me from my LX10 because of the interchanging lens capabilities. I'm not categorizing it as a point and shoot. In fact, I'm not quite sure where it belongs when I look at it. I'm also not quite sure of the reasoning behind the tilting veiwfinder. I do like the camera. Thank you for the review!

@cameralabs
@cameralabs 6 лет назад
Do you mean on the quality page? I'm pretty sure they're all in the correct order, but I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Do you think I've mixed up the Leica and the Olympus crops? The Leica ones are all on the left side and the Olympus ones are on the right side. Hopefully!
@takagoody410
@takagoody410 6 лет назад
Thank you for your reply. Yes, I mentioned about the crops in quality page. The reason why I think so is that, in the case of 50mm and 100mm, the shadows on the building in the left pictures are longer than the right pictures. But in the case of 150mm, the shadows on the building in the left pictures are shorter than the right pictures.

@cameralabs 6 лет назад
Ah, well spotted! The reason is they weren't taken in sequence.
@takagoody410
@takagoody410 6 лет назад
Oh! I got it !! I'm so sorry. There are heat hazes in the crops, therefore I cannot judge the sharpness of both lenses precisely. So I would like you to test again for the comparison of sharpness. Thank you.
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 6 лет назад
Heat rising across the scene is always an issue with longer lenses tested outside, but I still prefer to test at infinity rather than at close range with a chart. These tests are not as easily done as you may think, not least simply getting hold of both lenses at the same time and on a day when the sky is clear for the required period. Making multiple crops and comping them also takes time. I won't be repeating these particular tests, although I do hope to try both lenses with some teleconverters in the future. I hope you still find enough in the review to be useful.
