Hello Ted! Didn't expect a comment from yourself anytime soon 😊😂 You got me into making camera based content! Thanks for all your content and how you handle yourself on camera, you're extremely entertaining and professional 😎📸
They're great! You just have to be ready to work with the advantages and the disadvantages (but I always have fun using M43 cameras!) I'm waiting to see how the A7R-IV shapes up.. I think Sony is in seriously good form right now and in the next couple of years it'll make more sense for me to pick one up 😊 I'm very video/Editing based (that's my job) but I'd love to get into more stills work in a professional capacity in the future!
I just jumped out of Canon into MFT with the G9 and I got to agree. I'm loving the 7-14 and the Leica/Panasonic 100-400 lenses. They stack up to my L-series glass very well. I think the 7-14 mounted on my G9 is sharper than my EF16-35Lii on my 5Dii. The 100-400 on the G9 is a freak show. I've been doing things that should be impossible were it not for the dual stabilisation you get from that combo.
The GX8 wasn't really talked about either (especially here in Canadaland). I picked up the GX8 a couple of years ago for the sole reason that I needed to cheaply shoot a project in 4K (since my Canon full frame gear wasn't exactly up to the challenge). Of course I looked at Sony (and to a certain extent Fuji as well), but in the end I decided on the GX8 as it seemed to give me the best bang for the buck. And you know what happened? The little bugger turned out to be an awesome stills camera as well! It actually made me fall in love with photography again. I found that over the years I'd gotten complacent with my style, and the little GX8 and all it's charms gave me a reason to begin experimenting with composition and the artistry behind photography all over again. About six months after that, my studio was broken into and all of my Canon gear was stolen. The only thing the thieves left behind was my GX8 and the Panny 42.5mm 1.7 lens (probably thought it was just a toy)...so now I've fully embedded myself within the M43 ecosystem and I couldn't be happier! I use both the GH5 and the GX8 for studio photography, and I've started shooting concerts with the GH5. I absolutely LOVE these little cameras. Great video Conner!
Sven I'm sorry to hear about your studio my friend 😡 some people are just the worst! I'm delighted that you've found the GH5 and GX8 to be such brilliant workers for you 😁 I always love how much confidence i have using my GH5, I just feel I can get whatever shot I want 😍 and thats what it's all about!! The GX9 is making me a keen black and white shooter for stills now and I've never been happier out taking photographs for myself 😆 cheers for the awesome comment! I hope you're well? 😎
You are absolutely right. The GX9 is a very under-rated camera. There are always haters who will always pick on things. If you are a street or travel photographer like me you will love this camera. Incidentally, I also own the GX9 with the 15mm f/1.7 lens. The controls/dials are where they should be. It even worked very well with my manual focus Samyang 12mm f/2.0 lens. Try that if you have not. Manual focusing is a breeze on the GX9. Great for low light and astro-photography.
I do love the 15mm F1.7 for it with my GH5 when doing some astro, so I'll have to give the GX9 a run and see how it compares! I agree it's a very underrated camera and with the current discounts its a steal 😆
I just got a GX9 last week; it was the last one at the store, which is appropriate because I seem to be last person to have heard of it. I wasn't sure about focusing an all-manual lens, but was pleasantly surprised to find that I get blue outlines on in-focus elements in my finder. That means my 25mm f/0.95 Speedmaster lens will be a cinch to use in low light scenarios.
these cashback deals are why I have way too many cameras haha. I think you're so right - the naming of this device bombed the launch. I went in thinking it'd be a video-centric camera like the gx8, but the specs just confused me. no mic input... wahhhh??? But for stills, I bet it's brilliant! And I love the smaller form factor.
Hello there!! I love your videos 😍 Especially the recent photo shoot one 📸👍 I know that a "deal" or "discount" still means you spend money 😅 BUT DAMMIT Panasonic... at that price I couldn't resist! 🤗 If it was my only camera I'd be bummed out about the mic input being missing but because I have the GH5 and the Tascam 60Dmkii I just don't have an issue with it 🙂 There are some great ways around it on a budget too. I love the Instamics and they are made for a situation were your camera doesn't have a mic input 👍 Check them out if you haven't already they are deadly!!😎
Hi there, I LOVE the camera! I´m on the street with this camera for almost a year now and appreciate it every day more and more. It´s just the underdog that I was looking for. "Leica for the poor" with a lot more features and custom buttons and I can´t see any difference in the image quality to the G9. In combination with the 15mm f 1.7 a fantastic combo - and so deeply underrated! Good choice!
Thanks for the video! I just bought the GX9, and I love it. I was using a full frame set up for a long time, the photos are great, but the gear is heavy! Everyone said go with Sony or Fuji, but I wanted the lightest kit possible. I got the GX9, a Leica 12-60 mm lens, and a Leica 50-200mm lens. The photos are almost as good as with my FF kit, at 1/3 the weight. I am a happy camper. The best camera is the one you are willing to carry!
As a huge fan of the gx7, I'm glad Panasonic realised they messed up the formula with the gx8 which was stupidly large - it would have been nice had they managed to stick a mic input into the thing though.
Can fully understand your excitement over the GX9. I still use my GX7 a lot because it has a characteristic that no other M4/3 has. Panasonic did the right thing with the GX9 for that niche as a true improvement from the GX7. Great to see that camera around and being appreciated.
It's been a fantastic purchase for me and it's the reason I'm out shooting more photographs! 📸♥️ That's all I care about, having fun and taking pictures 🤘
I'm still using the GX8 which I love. I have several Panasonic micro4/3 cameras but the one I seem to keep going back too all the time for its film-like images is the G3, and that thing didn't get much love from reviewers at the time.
Very interesting! The first camera that I bought for myself was the G5 and it was great 😊 I can't see you getting rid of the GX8 any time soon! Packed with so many features and a great sensor 😎
Hello Click! I would say it was received controversially by Panasonic m43 users because of the naming structure (GX9 would logically be the next iteration of the GX8). Yet the GX9 is a successor to the GX7/GX80.I've heard in Japan that it is referred to as the GX7 mkii. So when it was released there was a lot of confusion around what this camera was and that confusion made it a very controversial camera for Pansonic users. Not enough of an upgrade of the GX7 (2013)/GX80(2016) to warrant purchasing. This was then compounded by the users bemoaning the removal of features from the GX8, it seems to have isolated itself in the line up as it's own thing entirely than an update to an existing line. And maybe it is supposed to be its own line of cameras or the little brother to the Panasonic G9?It kicked up a lot of negative attention since the launch a few months ago and the heavy price cuts would indicate the sales are less than stellar as the user base has not warmed to it. But for someone coming into that line up of cameras its a fantastic bit of kit and at a solid price now! 😊
There is a lot in a name. Naming it GX9 was a big mistake, with say a GX90 so they keep the naming structure coming from GX85 nobody would have batted an eyelid and this would have been considered as a fine mid-range camera which it is. Thing is, by choosing this name Pana decided to basically kill their high end "rangefinder body" segment and tell GX8 owners to bend over and get it. Not surprised that was not a popular decision... (i started m4/3 on a Pana GF1, GX8 was the holy grail camera, but still i like the 5-axis IBIS of my Olympus EP5..)
I agree. When I first read of the GX9 I too was disappointed. I love my GX8 & was kinda excited for a successor. But thinking about it, I've come to the conclusion that they're streamlining their camera segment & naming policy. I still think the GX9 is actually a fine camera & was I to get into M4/3 now I'd probably buy it. It seems like a pretty perfect entry point. But for those of who are (always =D ) potentially willing to upgrade it offered almost nothing new.
Maybe there is a bit of confusion over the naming but that does not make this camera less capable. In Japan, its called the GX7 Mk3. One must look at every camera on its own. If it suits you buy it. If it does not move on. By the way, I also bought the tiny Canon M100 with an APS-C sensor. Most people will dismiss it for an entry level girlie type of camera. Before anyone conclude, they have to check out the image quality first. Just a few days ago, Canon has introduced a new EOS-M 32mm f/1.4.lens (equivalent to 51mm on FF). The M100 really rocks with this new lens. Check it out when you can try it.
Just picked up the GX9, absolutely love it. Great little Leica wannabe that I can take with me everywhere. Especially with that 15mm 1.7. I love my Canon cameras, both DSLRs and mirrorless, but they’re huge and heavy and carrying a full kit requires a backpack or roller. The little LUMIX fits in my messenger bag or in a really small sling bag.
Thanks Connor. I saw this video when you uploaded it a while ago and I would've never considered buying a Micro 4/3 if it weren't for you. Now I own a GX9 (a sweet deal like yours) and the 15mm 1.7 and I'm absolutely loving it :). (Maybe Panasonic should thank you too :))
Hahah Thanks! What a fabulous choice you've made 📸😆 That thing is glued to my hand ❤️ I glad you've taken a chance on M43! It's got a lot going for it, all you need is an open mind 😎
The problem with the GX8 was that it was much bigger and more expensive than the GX7. I had a GX7 and I did not upgrade for those reasons. Then they came with the GX80 but the view finder didn't swivel like on the GX7 and GX8. In all the reviews of the GX80 they said it would be a great b-roll camera for video types using GH4 or 5. I bought the GX80 and I am so happy! Fab camera. Then the GX9 came out and they did the best thing, a sort of child of its parents the GX8 and GX80. You have the best GX camera! Don't talk about it like it is controversial or no good, the GX9 is an amazing camera. If I could afford to I would upgrade. But one year on from getting my GX80 I am still loving it. By the way don't knock Panasonic kit lenses. I use the 12-32 and it is sharp and a useful range.
Thanks for the video, I watched a lot of reviews and bought the gx9. It's great, little camera, so many options (not limited like Olympus did with e-m10 mk3). I was afraid that the EVF would not be good. I had not any comparision, because I was moving from ole Olympus DLSR - e520. But I think it's good and I don't need nothing more or bigger in such small camera. It's still about 30% bigger than viewfinder in e-520, even in 4/3 mode. I don't see any "rainbow effect" - I know it's individual, but I don't see anything so it's great for me. I prefer 3/2 ratio so I can choose it and it's even bigger, while RAW files are still saved in original 4/3. It's a perfect camera for travels (no extreme trips, I have never needed a water seal, so it's not an issue for me). Another thing - it looks like a normal "point and shoot" camera, nobody is staring at me. All those bad reviews about not having tiltable screen and microphone input - people haven't read it's made for travel and city photography not for video bloggers.
I'm really glad you enjoy the camera! I'm still getting settled in to using it and forming my opinion on it! Right now I love it, it's got some issues but they aren't deal breakers! 🤗📸 What type of lenses do you use on it 😊
I just use kit lens 12-60 - it's very good as a kit lens, AFAIK better than Olympus 14-42, and 24 eqiv. makes a difference. And my plan is to get small, wide, fixed lens. My opinion is: people have forgotten that they are the ones who take the pictures, not the cameras. We are amateurs and the camera should provide a comfortable way to take photos. We took nice photos with 2 megapixel cameras, so with current technology, it doesn't matter whether the iso3200 will have a little more noise or less.
atomic77 You are the most important factor 😊📸 always have been and always will be 🤘 there's lots of learning to be done with even the most basic cameras! 🙌 I don't think if you doubled my cameras megapixel count and double the iso performance I'd be taking better photographs 🤔 it's about the story you create from your photographs ♥️
If you don't have that deal, this camera makes no sense. The only difference between this and the gx85 is the bigger sensor, nothing else. Now selling on Amazon for $800 body only while the gx85 is now $450 with TWO kit lenses. No way to buy the gx9, I don't even understand what Panasonic wants with this idiotic pricing. The gx9 doesn't have a mic input, that probably would justify a slightly higher price than the gx85. Sorry man, even with the deal that you've got you haven't got the best deal.
Definitely think it caused frustration and confusion not being upgrade from gx8. However street photography as a form of photography is quite hand in glove with the whole scene fuji tapped into and have made their own. Fuji is great but it's also hip to have one. This camera or any other lumix aimed at street would sell better with a different look (more retro) slicker marketing etc. If they don't have something special desirable which people get loyal about they are purely judged on the specs. Shame as in many ways this is great and likely better than fuji x100f in some areas but it doesn't have a soul. Just as a tool though it's a bargain.
Hey there Charlie! Welcome 😎 I agree with you that Fuji just got into that street space and set up shop.. extremely successfully (People go on and on about Leica for street but the Fujis are stellar for the price.. but those primes are expensive) 🤗 It's all about finding and exploiting that niche! I've played with the xt2 and it was cool but just didn't do it for me! As a bargain & Bcam for my studio set up the GX9 is a steal for the price I got it 😍 I've also been out walking the streets of Dublin and taking candid shots and have to say I love it! In terms of injecting some soul I'll be adding the JB walnut wooden grip and base to the camera to give it a little something something when I'm out with it 🙂 There's no perfect camera, there's just the camera you have and your desire to get the most out of it 📸 Thanks for the comment Charlie 👍
Maybe not as much in the minority as you think. For street photography, I far prefer a screen that only tilts up and down. You can shoot from low or high and don't have an articulating screen flopping around off to the side, getting in the way and making the camera seem that much larger and more obvious. We're not all vloggers! My GX85 has around 12000 shutter actuations and probably no more than 30 minutes of video. Instead of arguing over what's best, we should all be thankful for so many choices!
Recently the us price dropped to $799 usd with the 12-60 kit. I got mine open box demo for $629 and sold the kit lens for $200 .. net price was $429 Usd like new body only ... so in essence I got a gx9 for the price of a gx85 ... no brainer! I don’t think it’s $500 better than gx85 .. but if you can get it for $200 or less better? Yes worth it
I had many FF cameras that I sold for several reasons, even a Sony A7RIII and currently I just have a GX8 with 2 lenses : the 25 F/1.4 for street photographie and the 75 F/1.8 manly for portraits. And I'll probably complete it with the 12-40 for travels. I have no reason to change for the GX9. Honestly, I don't regret my choice. FF were ideal to massage my ego. They delivered great pictures too, because I had the best lenses. But they were big, expensive and heavy. But once you take distance with marketing injunctions and overcome ego's issues, M4/3 is probably the best choice you can do. If I had to change today, I won't buy a Nikon Z or a Canon R, but a G9.
The G9 is a beauty! Im going to start pestering Panasonic to send me one to test out if my channel grows a bit bigger 😎📸 it seems like a match made in heaven for wildlife photographers 😊
I really like it, the angle of view, colours and contrast are great. I particularly like being able to switch to manual directly on the lens. I also have the Pana 20mm f1.7 which also suits the GX9 and is slightly sharper

My coleague bought it too, he is "faping" all over it how awesome it is... He had Olympus E-M10 mk-II before that. Panasonic seem to give their cameras good features.
Interesting that he rates it highly after having the Olympus. I must admit I wasn’t sure what to expect but it really is a great little camera at the current discounted price 👍

Olympus is very user-friendly but the M10 as basic model bring besides wi-fi almost nothing new. the m10 mk-lll is supposed to have better noise reduction algorithm against previous version, but we had no opportunity to test that. I think next Panasonic's higher end model will be beast in many ways.
I can relate so much to this! I've just had a blast using the camera! It makes me want to shoot more and more for fun and that's always a good thing 😎😍
You're absolutely right about the price.. No way GX9 at £800 (so I bought a secondhand GX80, a beautiful little thing, the perfect m43 camera, size/quality mix). Then the GX9 price quietly drops, then the cashback in the UK right now, then a new WEX opens with another 10% off, so bought one just yesterday (GX80 sold on eBay, sob sob). It feels like the GX80 pro, or GX8 lite, but a super camera, again the perfect size/quality m43 camera. Very first impressions, very impressed. I'd really like to know your further thoughts on using it, and that 15mm lens, which tempts me..
I love the camera! And that 15mm lens is so crispy! I have to get a lot closer to subjects 😊 I'll be making a review of the camera in the coming weeks as I get into it a bit more 📸👍 Right now I'm very much in the exploratory stage and loving it. I picked up 2 wasabi batteries on Amazon to have in my bag now, initial testing makes them out to be about 70% of the runtime as the Panasonic battery but they were £30 for the two so I'm very pleased with them 😎
... it is an option for me too. i have the g9 and the lx100. I like both, but for travelphotography the G9 is much to big for me. But if the lx100 is again falling down ( it is my second, the first fall down from a wall in Carmel Mission ) i will buy the gx9 or a successor. Thank you for your nice video. i like to see more videos from you. Sorry my English. ... from Tirol , Austria
Still has the field sequential panel. The grips keep getting worse in the gx7 series. GX85 still acceptable, but this one did not work in the hand for me.
Still have the gx80 and g9. Thinking of selling the gx80 and get the gx9. Still have many MFT lenses. Love the small form factor for Street photo. Also love my Ricoh GR3, but that is one lens only…
I use a Sony a7ii love it but bought a Ricoh griii great camera but expensive so sold it and bought a gx9 never thought I would ever buy in to this system but needed a camera what could be more flexible ie street and travel and love it use the Lumix 14mm and the Olympus 9mm lens cap just need a 25mms not sure what version yet 1/7 or 1/4 😎
Hi paul! You're right! I think I got so mixed up because there's also a gx800 and the wires crossed in my head 😂 the gx7 is what I had inside my mind but my mouth was saying the wrong stuff completely! Lol 🙂 ah well! The relevance to the gx8 is still correct but I won't make the same mistake for my review 😂😊 thanks for pointing this out! What cameras do you own? 🙂
Hey Connor no problem. Well I have an assorted bunch of cameras. I have the GX7 which is still great and a few primes which all fit in a tiny bag and I use for travel or days out. Before that I had the GF1 which was a revelation to me and made me sell my Canon DSLR gear. I've also got some Fuji and Sony gear which have their place. I was thinking of replacing the GX7 with the GX9 but I'm not sure. I like the idea of the much softer shutter and IBIS but TBH the GX7 is still pretty awesome and I have too much gear as it is lol.
I'll have to say that the only thing that disappointed me, as a gx85 user (and very happy, mostly), is that they kept the old ugly evf and didn't use at least a 4/3 aspect ratio finder. For me, the gx85 is almost perfect for what it is, except for the evf. Here, they upped the game save for the evf. Huge shame. I don't care for the other features. To me, a good quality evf is a key feature of a camera that offers a great shooting experience. Still, I'll probably replace mygx85 when I find a great deal, but I'll always have a bitter taste about that evf... Oh well, maybe the gxx10?
Keep your powder dry for now and see what comes out next year 😊I've heard the EVF on the GX8 is fantastic! 😅 Doesn't help us out though 🤗 What sort of photography do you do Jean??
I've bought it:was out for a Pen-F, but, quality wise, this is almost the same and it costs 300€ less with a Mini zoom added to the bunch. I still think The EM5 kii si the best all around m43 around, but this comes with 4k, and a tilting screen and eyepiece that comes hand for a fast shot.
Hell Yeah!! Another GX9'r 😊 you only using the kit lens on it or do you have other glass? I absolutely adore the camera and I've been shooting in the Monochrome D and not even bothering with the raw files!😎 I just love the look out of it so much! I'll admit though the 15mm F1.7 has a learning curve with it... I realise I need to get in closer to get the shots I want! But I'm slowly working up the courage on walks out to get a little bit closer!! Soon I'm going to ask strangers on the streets can I take their portraits.. the anxiety over it is killing me but it's my next thing to get over and start doing 😍
I have most of the primes from Olympus which I share with my other camera. One question: can you figure out a way to assign a useful function to the rear control wheel when in A or S mode? Throwing in a separate exp comp dial defies it's mean if you cannot assign the rear wheel to, say, ISO control or something else... Also the pushing wheel would be nice to use for something useful.
I haven't figured it out yet! I thought I was going mad about clicking the wheel and not being able to use it as a function for anything!🤔 I'm going to message Panasonic about it and see if I get a response!
Was in the same boat. Main cam is a gh5 and I wanted something smaller for street. Im loving it paired with the 14mm f2.5, 28mm is my favourite street focal length and with a pancake lens the entire system fits in a jacket pocket. only complaint is the grip ergonomics, however I ordered a thumbs-up thumb grip which has completely changed how I hold it it and certainly improved my experience.
I've been looking all around for a grip! I hate the way the official one doesn't have a battery door so you have to remove the grip to change the battery 🤨 I'll have a poke around for a thumb grip and see what I can find 😎
Why contraversial? This isnt an upgrade to the GX8 the clue is in the Japanese name GX7MkIII (the GX80 is the GX7MkII). This is a perfect 3rd upgrade to the GX7 which got me into MFT in the first place and I loved it. This is now my perfect street camera, GX9 with Olympus 17mm f1.8; absolute perfection. It completely trashed my now sold Nikons and gives my Leicas a run for their money. The GX9 is the perfect high tech complement to my more basic Leica TL2 and both have a tilting EVF which I now find indispensible. Of course you cant buy a load of Leica lenses as they cost a couple of grand a pop so my system camera is the GX9; lenses are fantastic and reasonably priced. By the way dont write off the 12-32mm pancake kit zoom. Mine came with this lens and I assumed it was rubbish; this was confirmed on first use as the images were all bleary from contact with my arm. However I cleaned the lens, permanently fitted a Leica style metal lens hood and a large 58mm lens cap for the end, both bought from Amazon for a few quid, and problem solved. This is now my goto lens when I dont have a prime fitted, it has astonishing image quality and has my staple 35mm and nifty fifty positions covered plus 24mm ultra wide; and this is an assessment from a Leica and prime lens user. With the kit zoom fitted the whole thing slips into my hand bag and will always get me a shot; x2 digital zoom brings in ducks at teh park. I fitted the accessory handgrip and leave it on permanently as I charge and download via the USB. The GX9 is my favourite camera and I chose it in preference to the G9 which I thought too big, ugly and too much like the SLRs I have been using for 50 years. Time for a change, the 2020s will be fully electronic and I hate retro (yes I hate the comp dial, one more thing to accidentally jog), love touch screen operation and both my cameras are now state of the art and give stunning images. No controversy at all. This video is what property photographer Dom Bower thinks of the kit zoom and I have to agree with every word :-) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vGFwDbSPZ3c.html
Thanks for such an in-depth comment Vici 😊 I watched that video and the lens is certainly impressive! But for me, I just didn't think it was worth picking up as I already have the 12-35mkii & 35-100mkii.. and I really wanted the 15mm F1.7📸😊 I've been loving the combination between body and lens! I think the controversy was from people online. The GX9 reviewed very well but it seemed to have been received lukewarm from M43 users. The heavy price reductions and cashback deals from Panasonic only a few months after the release have to be because of less than stellar sales. 🤔
Well people think its an expensive upgrade to the GX80 well it isnt really, that is a 16MP camera. The GX9 has teh same 20MP sensor that is in the GH5 for £1000 less, seen like that its a bargain; especially with the 4K picture modes and film emulation. As Panasonic say its their premium street camera and I cant fault the description, everything about the build is premium, it feels like a metal brick in the hand. The image quality is stunning especially with my 17mm 45mm f1.8 and 25mm f1.7 primes. I cant think of a better street camera on the market; I would take it over the Sony A7 every day. ;-)
I really like the camera and have been seriously considering it as my next purchase but a company's "premium street camera" should have at least a little weather sealing. Is the GX8 really going to be the last pro rangefinder style camera from Panasonic?
Its much better than the GX8, its got the same sensor as the GH5 for half the money and the new electromechanical shutter to eliminate shutter shock. If you think about it very few professional street cameras have ever been weathersealed over the years, its a recent development; none of the Leica M cameras were and they went through battle zones. Some reviewers have said the GX9 is reasonably weatherproof from slight rain, just not rated as such. I have seen footage from a guy with it covered in rain; he said do it at your own risk but, dont blame me ho hum. My guess is its as weatherproof as many so called weatherproof cameras but Panasonic didnt feel it merited the description; other makers are perhaps less scrupulous. There is a video by an american pointing out how his weatherproof Sony A7 ended up filled with rainwater; after repair under warranty he poured sealant into all the body joins. It seems the designation weather sealed may not be worth a heap of beans. You could do what birders do with their scopes, cover it on the streets, somebody probably makes such a cover. As far as I am concerned, to me the GX9 with accessory grip and Olympus 17mm f1.8 is the best street camera I have ever had and if it fails then it was cheap enough to write off unlike my two Leicas, neither of which are weather sealed either ;-)
Very valid points. I had watched that video of Richard Wong's where he showed it in the rain and said to do it at your own risk, right after I had watched this video. Funny coincidence. It's still not an easy decision for me. In New Zealand, the GX9 is $1300 and a Fuji X-T2 is $1800. I hear talk of micro four thirds possibly going the way of the dodo in the not too distant future, but the Fuji system will likely be around for decades.
I bought a newly discontinued GX85 after the GX9 came out. Perfectly happy with it. The main upgrades are the 20mp sensor and tilting EVF. Otherwise it's pretty much the same as the GX85.
I'll take a used G85 or GX8 before this camera new. I guess I get it if you're using it as a B cam for the GH5, but the total lack of a mic jack or any way to add one is unacceptable. It's the same reason the OM-D E-M10 Mark III does not appeal to me.
That's fair Daniel! 😊 I take care of audio separately and never go into camera so it doesn't bother me with the GX9 missing a mic input 📸🤙 it'd be cool if it had it but no great loss for me 😊
I've been using the GX80 as my smaller take out & about camera.. The Summilux 15mm is astounding. Been watching the GX9 for months watching the price go up & down on Amazon. And then recently bought the GX9 and kit lens ( it was only £25 more) for £499. Can't wait to get the Summilux 15mm on there and start using it. ( I like the kit lens for video because of the body & lens double image stabilization.) It's in the post to me at time of writing.. 🙂 I too was tempted with Fuji. But like you say, it's a whole other system. May switch in future years as I'm seeing image stabilization is on the XT4. Hopefully they'll add it to new smaller models too.
@@CreativeConnor White balance ( AWB ) was rubbish compared to GX80,, and had noisy images ( long night exposures) compared to GX80. Maybe to do with more megapixels on the sensor? I returned it. Really didn't take to it. Daylight images were lovely, sharp, & detailed though. But I shoot a lot at night. I'll keep GX80 for time being. Then will probably be moving to Fuji sometime in the future.. No rush though, using the GX9 has made me appreciate my GX80 more. And there's nothing much that has the same specs for the value. Fuji's image quality should be great for photography, but no in body image stabilization isn't something that appeals now I'm used to it.. GX80 does great video too. I have my canon SLR, do don't need another system slightly smaller.. it has to be GX80 kind of small.. May hold on to GX80 for a while. Will miss my Summilux 15mm 1.7 if I ever leave M43
My main camera is a sizable and weighty Nikon FF DSLR with equally sizeable and weighty lenses. I am planning on buying a small, easy to carry and discrete (for the Street ) camera that I can carry with me most of the time in a belt pouch. I had a look at the GX9 and The LX100ii fixed zoom lens compact in Bermingham's this morning. Now I'm torn between the two. In order to get the portability I require, I'd have to pair the GX9 with the 12-32 kit lens, which is tiny. It is, by all accounts, a very decent lens for what it is but it has a much slower max aperture vs the lens on the LX100ii and in FF terms has almost 10mm less reach.on the long end. On the other hand, the GX9 has 3mp more resolution (even though they share the same sensor), an articulating screen and I prefer the feel of it's slightly larger form factor in my hand. There is also the fact that the GX9 has self sensor cleaning and, if needs be, you can take the lens off and clean it manually. The fixed zoom lens cameras tend to suck in dust over time and getting the sensor cleaned is complicated and therefore expensive. Decisions, Decisions! I both love and hate buying a new camera!
I just bought a GX8 a great around sleeper and with mic input!!!!! I have the GH5 but prefer using the smaller GX8 when travelling great video and stills and I bet you can pick it up for a great price now.
Hello Mike! Cheers for the comment... the GX8 was €800 for the body only in the shops in Dublin and second-hand cameras are near impossible to find around here! I would be lying if I said I didn't mind the lack of weather sealing and mic input! But I do love the removal of the low pass filter and smaller size of the GX9😎📸 I can't believe it took me so long to notice the GX line up 🤨
I really like my GX80/85 ! bought for 450euros (Body) and lenses 25mm 1.7(Pana), 45mm 1.8 (Olympus) I was blown away when I saw Video Quality! theres only 1 issue - no mic Input :/
PREACH 😊 How do you get around the mic? I use a Tascam 60Dmkii and have a few different mics to get into it! 👍 If you're looking for something that just works amazingly, have a look at the "Instamics" they are incredible (like the GoPro microphones)🤩
Did you pick up spare batteries for it? 😎 I grabbed 2 Wasabi batteries with a dual charger on Amazon 🤘 They last about 70% of the Panasonic battery and you get 2 of the Wasabis for £30 📸
size and conveniance is the best thing about the GX9 also Monochrome filters!! I have the kit lens and a 25mm. I am thinking of trading the 25mm for a 20mm pancake to increase portability but after watching your video, I may go for the 15mm 🤔
Should have looked in to the Olympus O-MD E-M10 mark ii or mark iii if you want 4k. It's the same size but does an amazing job at photos. I've always felt that Olympus did a little better in the photography side and Panasonic dominated the video side.
Hi Mike! I had considered it but I really wanted to keep the colours similar to my other camera for video and the Dual IS for my longer lenses was also a big deal for me 😊 thanks for your comment 📸 I hope your doing well!!
Great video! As a fellow photographer & affiliate marketer, I noticed that all of your Amazon links are specific to GB. I'm watching this from the US, and I wonder how much of your audience is also watching outside Europe (you can get these stats easily, I'm sure). You might want to look into getting global links - I'm pretty sure that Amazon's One Link can do this, and I just saw another vlogger using something called Genius Link. Anyhow, keep up the great work!
Hey Kai! I think I missed the boat with these links, 90% of my followers are US based haha so I'll get around to changing them in the future when I start making more content. Thanks kindly for letting me know 😎
helo.. can you recomend me to choose one should I get, sigma 16mm f1.4 or panaleica 25mm f1.4 ? (same budged) help me, I love the shaprest lens and emage quality for filming and concert photography in the night🙏🏻 my main camera is gx9
Yo Bagus! They're very different focal lengths. The Sigma is a 30mm equivalent and the Panasonic is a 50mm equivalent 😬 ones wider than the other. They're both fantastic. So I think it boils down to your focal length preference
@@BagusWibisono the image quality from both is exceptional. So it's not a question of IQ. They're both in the same league. It comes down to the other factors to make the decision. That's what I was trying to help you with
SWEET! 📸 What sort of photography do you enjoy doing the most with the camera Bob? 😎 The review is incoming in the coming weeks 🙂 I want to do the camera justice and use it in a plethora of different locations and situations 😍
I most enjoy taking pictures of people, capturing life as they are experiencing it, rather than a picture capturing people who have changed what they were just doing for the sake of the camera/me.
Candid photography is my favourite and I think that's what draws me to street photography 😊 I find thay every day life is so beautiful 📸 do you post your photographs online at all?
Finally, someone else who actually purchased this. I bought it when it came out for increasing interest in walkaround, compact take everywhere camera but with great stabilization and video specs. I just slap a compact and tiny Panasonic 20mm and it goes with me everywhere. I miraculously discovered that I am fascinated with black and white photography for the first time with the new monochrome D. Good stuff. If only it had a flip screen it would be totally there. If that had not named it gx9 which made people compare it to the gx8, there would have been no controversy. It is the successor to the gx85 I think.
Absolutely Randy! I like the tilting screen though it suits my uses perfectly 📸😊 I'm glad you enjoy it with the 20mm!! I'm finding the 15mm so much fun with this camera 🙂 it's turning into my favourite focal length 😋
Sorry, I never had a gx8, I just read all the angry gx8 owners who thought the gx9 was a followup to that one. I do know that the gx9 has a better sensor and the new venus processor i think it's called. But, no watersealing and smaller size viewfinder, but, the gx9 viewfinder articulates like the old gx8 did so I think Panasonic just confused everyone in how they named it.
Hi Conner just subscribed to your channel I,m am normally a Nikon shooter but I,m just about to enter into the world of micro four thirds I have a gx9 being delivered on Monday with £150 cash back. Will look forward to your full review. Thank you.
Just picked one of these up for shooting for fun. I have a gh5s for my professional work, but I’m really stoked to use this as a small street photography camera for walking around! B&H had a deal for $200 (U.S) off with an SD card.
I bought the GX85 in November for just under $500 US brand new including two kit lenses and a bunch of other extras (filter, holster bag, SD card). While the GX9 has some minor improvements, for the money, the GX85 seems to be the better choice, while it lasts.
That's a very nice deal! Good on you for nabbing it! 😎 It's all about the photographs and what you can get out of the camera you have 📸 Have fun shooting
I absolutely love this thing to bits! Got the optional Grip piece quite cheaply, so it even works nicely with the 100-300. Fits my jacket pocket with the 12-32, but can also feel "proper" with the grip and 100-300. Thanks for your video, it helped my decision half a year ago! Oh and on a sidenote: I was extremely surprised by how well the 12-32 kit lens performs!
Any chance you could make a video on AF performance with the 1.2 firmware update? There's not a single video of that for this camera, just GH5 and G9. Hope you're doing better man
I was considering the GX9 but I have the G85 which is only slightly larger than the GX9 and similar weight - The G85 has better features INCLUDING WEATHER SEALING but only a 16 megapixel sensor - purchased a LX10 instead which is 24-144mm f1.2-16 due to its smaller form factor and weight
Very true. I bought it as a small B- or C-Camera to my GH4 and GH5 and use it mainly for stills and for travel when I want a small body. Now that it also has Cinelike-D and Cinelike-V you can make good use of it as a second or third angle video camera as well. I love it very much.
Totally agree about the GX9. I'm not a huge video guy. My main camera is the G9 - if I'm planning on going out and taking a lot of photos I'll take that. But the rest of the time I always have the GX9 in my day to day bag. It's so small and light I can carry it everywhere. I have the Leica 15mm too but usually I just leave the 12-32mm kit lens on the GX9 - didn't think it would be great but it's surprisingly good. Another big plus for me is the Bluetooth function. Geotagging is important for me and Bluetooth makes that so much more automatic than cameras which only have WiFi, like the G85. I didn't have a small Pansonic body before the GX9 though, so perhaps for me it's not suffering in any comparison to the prior models.
Hi there Baggas, I really interested in your input as to which camera you most enjoy, GX9 or G9? I'm a amateur at best, and love to shot street photography, and landscapes... the truth of the matter is the frame is dominated my my kiddos. Based on that criteria (still images mixed with fast moving munchkins) which of those cameras would you recommend? Oh, I do dabble in video every now and then, but stills is where it at with me. Cheers
Hey Marco. I am exactly same as you - amateur focussing on kids, landscape, streets, with little video. If you can afford it and don't mind the size, the G9 is still the far superior camera - it focusses a lot faster and is better in low light, weather sealed, better video features etc. But as a cheaper, smaller option, or for an every day carry around, the GX9 is not to be sneezed at.
@@baggas that is an interesting view because i am also torn between G9 - GX9 for a very similar content. The weight/size is there so the question is if it is worth for the additional features. I am surprised G9 is better in low light since i thought it is the same sensor. Gx9 gets the most positive reviews for its still capability. But it has 1,25xcrop in 4K and no mic in which concerns me to take it instead of G9. Also it is said that G9 has best AF in video.
I have the GX80 as a back up or holiday camera ,I bought this for £120 plus I traded an old iPhone 5s and a Olympus Epl3 which was a bargain to back up my Em5mkii ,only problem is my nose moves the focus point if it touches the screen, any idea to turn the screen off 🤷♂️
hahaha, Gary! I've not had that happen with the GX9 because the eyepiece articulates! Have you tried finding a bigger eyecup like the Guerilla G-Cups? They'll get your face further back from the touchscreen 📸😎
Well done video. Get well fast. I think the naming created a lot of confusion and dissatisfaction. It's the GX7iii in Japan. Ironically, when the GX8 was released there were a lot of complaints about it being too big, not having a flip out screen, and essentially not being a true successor to the GX7. For folks looking for a true GX8 successor with many of the G9 features in a rangefinder style body, the GX9 was a huge fail. It's really in the GX7, GX80/85, lineage. As noted in the video, it's not all things for all people. But if viewed as a street/travel type camera, it's really good.
You're talking some sense Bradley 😊 I think that's where people get muddled up. Sometimes there are certain tools for certain jobs 😎 thank you for the comment! What sort of equipment do you use yourself?
Pretty much all m43. Smaller bodies and lenses are a much better fit for my needs which includes things like hiking, travel, street. I've mostly used Olympus bodies. Lenses like the f/1.2 pro primes have little interest for me. for most of what I don I much prefer lenses like the 15mm f/1.7, 45 f/1.8, etc. I knew the GX9 was basically a modest upgrade of the GX80/85 with the 20mp sensor. I like it very much, but I also knew what it wasn't.
I'm afraid I was one of those that was absolutely disappointed in this camera. I have a GX8 and was looking for an upgrade that would basically be a G9 in a rangefinder body. Well, this isn't that. The only improvement it had over the GX8 was dropping the anti-aliasing filter. Everything else seemed a step backwards to me. So, after it was released, I went out and bought a G9. I love everything about it, except its size! I think with a really big discount the GX9 is a fine camera, but not for the bucks they originally priced it at.
Connor Dunne I’m still getting used to the camera, but on the whole I like it. On the plus side - Great EVF, I really like the thumb stick for your focus point, battery life is pretty phenomenal compared to my previous M43 cameras, the 6K photo features are pretty neat, finally the IBIS is pretty awesome, beats even the OM-D EM5II which is pretty fantastic itself. Finally, I think the jpg engine is much improved on the G9 - it equals the Olympus jpgs. I shoot both raw and jpg but probably end up using more jpgs than raw photos for posting. Next, I also got the battery grip with the camera which is a mixed bag, on the one hand I like taking portrait aspect photos and the grip is soo nice for that, I think the thumb stick is even better placed on the grip, on the other hand, the thing really adds to the bulk of the camera. I ended up buying a new camera bag that could handle the G9 and grip together. The one thing that gets me with the G9 is the size and weight. I have had 4 previous M43 cameras - the Oly Pen E-PL1, Pen E-PL5, EM5II and the GX8. I thought the GX8 was big but I loved the camera. The G9 makes that camera seem svelte. I hope this gives you a quick review of the plus and minuses of the G9.
It did indeed! I'm fascinated by the camera 😊 I've watched a lot of wildlife photographers using it lately and it looks like a real powerhouse for that sort of shooting 😊
I just got my gx9 with the tiny kit lens in the post today, it is charging right now... and have the 15mm and the 14-140mm on the way in the post, so I am jumping into the m4/3 system (does the lens hood you have on, come with the 15 mm? or is it bought for itself?). I hope I will love it - I was looking for small/portability in a mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera with touch/tilt screen, wifi, stabilisation and of course good quality pictures and think gx9 fits the bill. I got soo tired of the "it is not an upgrade to gx8" which filled videos and blogs - when I just wanted to hear about the gx9 so I could deside if it was for me. Even if people say it is small - coming from a Lumix lx5 - it fells big/heavy :). And you should put an affiliate link for those batteries - because maybe I will need to get an ekstra battery ;)
I was going to get the gx80/85 at first because they have very good deals (410€) on those here in Dk now that gx9 are out... but ended up getting the gx9 from uk due to an offer and (the uk and Ireland panasonic) cashback.
Hello Stine 😆 Thanks for your lovely comment! I don't do affiliate links? I never thought I needed to 📸 My channels so small anyway and I do it for fun! Maybe if it takes off I will look into it 😎 I bought the Wasabi 2 battery pack on Amazon (£30) and they come with a dual charger too which is fantastic so you don't have to swap out one at a time to charge the batteries in the camera body! From my testing, they have about 70-75% of the life of the Panasonic battery for half the price so go check them out : goo.gl/b9ADzA
Also, let me know how you get on with the lenses and cameras in the coming weeks! 😊 The 15mm is my baby now and it does come with the metal lens hood 😍
Hi - I've just managed to get this camera...Im a total newbie. What do you suggest as the best settings for day/night? I've been experimenting with using the Manual setting for daytime: F3.5 / SS500 / ISO200 / IDynamic auto/ CineV or CineD profile on a 12-32mm lens. Ideally want dont want to keep manually change the settings but I found the iA profile make some dark areas too dark. For night time street view with street lights I was using F3.5/SS25/ISO 400-1600. Having problems with noise during dusk.
Hi like this review and subscribed... I am a bmpcc user.. as the bmpcc doesn’t do stills I’m looking for a camera primarily for still photography and video good enough (4K preferable) to be working as a b cam for the bmpcc.. the resolution for stills must be good enough as I’ll also be scanning 35mm films shot on my canon ftb ql ( can’t afford a dedicated scanner).. so could you suggest me the best affordable camera for this Multi task.. price as low as possible and obviously m43 preferable as I can share those lenses with the bmpcc.. thanks
Hi Connor, I agree the GX9 at its current £450 price body only is remarkable. Problem is as a 2nd hand buyer Im finding the residial prices are very high at £385 in excellent condition MPB so 85% of new price. I really want to but this but refuse to buy new and wont pay more than 75% of new price when purchasing 2nd hand ... perhaps crazy logic because if they were selling it at a perfectly reasonably £550 new I would prob be v happy with £385 2nd hand (70%) ... my mind works in strange ways sometimes :-)) Rich
Thanks for another very good video. I started off with the GF1, then the GX7. Bought a second "nos" GF1 i 2018, love the system, with all the available lenses. Mostly I use the 20mm lens with a Jupiter 50mm f1,5 from 1951 as a short tele option. I do have several other Mft lenses but those are my favorites. My next will be the GX9 and the 15mm f 1,7. Regards and wishes for a full recovery. Ulf
We have three Panasonic cameras and they are first class. We have a Gx7, gf5, and a gf3 light and very sharp. My wife used her gf5 on our last two months in Asian. Great for street photography. Good video. Nice Irish accent.
Did you use/try an external flash too? Can one use that in burst mode? I'm a m43 Olympus/Panasonic user since 2012(before decades Canon gear). I bought a new GX8 when it came out. With the GX8 it is impossible to flash other as in single image mode... So the GX8 isn't suitable for certain photography. Strange enough this limitation is nowhere mentioned.
I haven't tried with flash/multi-flash setups just yet! When I do I'll be sure to let you know how I faired! 😎 Have you tried talking to Panasonic yet about the issue?
By their FB page, by mail and to the Dutch distributor. No answer or 'we can't/don't know sort of things. Now my GX8 is mainly used for shooting video's and that does it rather well
thanks for the effort and the sharing. as someone who really enjoys the panasonic g7, i was initially disappointed in the release of the gx9. i now look forward to your review. thumbs up.
Two years from your post ;) I would say - AMAZING camera ! With PanaLeica 15/1.7 absolutely killing combo. If I want to rewind time and get the same feeling as I had with Zeiss Ikon + Zeiss Sonnar 50/1.5 I just snap PanaLeica 25/1.4 and here you are ;) Incredible image quality with almost perfect ergonomics and unbeatable enjoyment of usage. One complaint IBIS is far behind Olympus or G9 but I can live with it ;)
Hi Connor, how’s it going. Wondering if you’re still using the GX9 or indeed the M43 system? I do, the Gx9 & G9, for much the same reasons as you, I love this system. I do use some full frame kit for other genre though but the M43 babies get most use.
Got this camera about a month ago now. Primarily a still guy and boy does it fit the bill. Still using the kit lens (12-60/3.5-4.8 ? zoom) and looking to get the 15/1.7 shortly. Did a serious run this week in which the light was going to be low and the results were amazing with a 3200 iSO limit, the image stability took me to 1/15 or so several times with great results.
@@CreativeConnor I noticed that a large number of shots that I took this weekend were at about 15mm on the zoom lens. Will be great to get a little brighter lens. Thanks for the confidence statement.
@@CreativeConnor Well I have now have the Leica 15 mm, 25mm, and 12-60 also. This camera is very good, and you are correct in your praise of the 15 mm. I find the 25mm good all round and used the 12-60 on a recent vacation with very good results. For street ,the 15 mm is super. Any thoughts on the 8-18 mm Leica?
Its a great camera, but the 20mp sensor has bad shadow noise and banding compared to the older iso-less 16mp sensor in GX80/85. If the sensor hade been any better I would have switched, but for now the sensor is a downgrade from the GX80 that I currently use.
i too have the gx9 and i have also mated it with 15mm f1.7 panasonic Ieica lens. here in canada its not being promoted as the go to combo which is a total mistake by panasonic but then the panasonic marketing division are constantly making poor decisions.....its called shooting oneself in your own foot .... having said this please note my 2 cameras and 6 lens are all panasonics ! P.S: great video.
I have a GX85 (GX80) and it too goes with me pretty much everywhere, usually with the Olympus 17 1.8 on the camera and a 45 1.8 in the bag. Definitely a love/hate relationship with that model. I've disabled screen touch af and focus and recompose. If i really need to change the focus point, I programmed the Fn1 button to activate D-pad focus. Usually shoot RAW+JPEG to get better colours in post. The metering and video on these cameras is excellent.
Interesting! I have the GX9 and GH5 set up for back button focusing. But I'm enjoying the touch screen on the gx9 for choosing the focus point and being able to recompose after using the FN button assigned for back button focusing. 😊How do you find the 45 F1.8? I've been thinking about a fixed telephoto for some portrait work? The 45 F1.2 looks to be a lovely lens! although it's a bit pricey! 🤔📸
@@CreativeConnor The Oly 45mm is really nice, focuses quick but not suuuuper quick on my GX7. Focus accuracy is around 80-85% to my liking, good enough for casual but I am afraid for using it on critical work. I read online that the Panasonic version has better AF due to the Dept of Defocus technology... The AF could completely be a different story on a GX9 that I guess is super super responsive compared to my old GX7. All that said, is super sharp, optically amazing and really small to be carried all around just in case. The 42.5 1.2 will never have that last benefit
The £150 cash back convinced me to get one to replace my pretty much wrecked GX7. It's a decent camera for the £430 I paid for it, but I still find it very difficult to work up much enthusiasm for it. Even compared with the 5 year old GX7 it isn't a massive upgrade for me as a stills shooter. The GX9 improves some things quite nicely, but disappointingly uses the same poor quality EVF (if anything the optics are worse) and downgrades some features like flash sync and the grip. Other things just strike me as unnecessary limitations from Panasonic, like the add-on grip that needs to be changed to remove the battery, or the inability to use flash with the focus stacking feature. Don't get me wrong, I'm quite happy with mine, but I would never have bought one at full release price.
totally get your point, it's likely your perfect fit for street photography. I use and still prefer the GX-8 though, as I really appreciate its video capabilities second to none in this class and at its price! I use my GX-8 to 'travel lite' ru-vid.com when I don't want to pack my larger and heavier JVC pro camcorder -- these great Lumix cameras make me not need that one ever more often thanks to their fantastic capabilities and image quality.
i bought the GX9 as a mistake and now this is my favorite camera, its small light and fun to use i don't think i will ever buy another camera until is is broken .
Due to old age I was forced to sell my dslr system because it was too heavy for me to carry. This week I bought a Lumix GX80 and a couple of lenses and I love it. Its light and small but the pictures I'm getting from it are incredible. Obviously being a camera tart I am now looking at the GX9, not because its better than the GX80, I just want a second camera. I am waiting to see if the price drops closer to Christmas though but I know I will get it even if the price doesn't drop. For me Panasonic GX series Cameras are perfect.
I have a Panasonic gf5 and a gx9 . Bothe very good cameras, so good my wife took them both and they will never ever be shared . Lumix products are very good . My wife is Irish . Nice Irish accent.
I want to love this camera. I mean, I really want to love it. But as a stills camera, I think Panasonic missed important features. Firstly, high-res mode. The almost head-to-head competitor to this body, the Pen-F, is better suited to still than the GX9, I think. High-res mode, fully-articulating screen, more focus points, higher shutter speed limit (sure only 1 stop, but...), higher fps (again, only 1 but it all adds up), and focus bracketing. Here in Canada, the price is the same, but the GX9 has the kit lens. So, you're getting a lens with Panny, and 4k video vs 1080. High-res alone would make it worth it. Without that, I can get an E-M5II for half the price, and make up the difference from the 16mp sensor with a tripod.
Thanks. I love my GX7 I bought 3 years ago and her sisters (9mm, 14mm, 20mm and 45 mm). I think I'll pass for now. Also, Google storage provides free unlimited storage for photos up to 16 megapixels or videos up to 1080 HD, so...
