Panasonic Quietly Fixed the Pitch on the Technics SL-1200 MK7 Turntables

Without an official announcement or any internal dialogue with their reseller network, it appears that Panasonic has secretly fixed the now-proven problems of the pitch sliders of the Technics SL-1200 MK7 Turntables.
In an earlier video ( • Does the Technics SL-1... ) and with an earlier shipping model of this turntable, I showed that the pitch slider was inactive between +7-8% and -7-8%. I made the video you're now watching to show that this is no longer the case on more recent batches of the turntable.
The question remains: When did they fix it, and how can we fix older models? I don't know when this issue was resolved, but I suspect that changing the pitch slider board would be required. Is it really necessary though? Well, that's for you to decide.

True Mr. Goodman! I have bought another unit in April 2021 and the Pitch works just fine! No dead zones. In my opinion, I think is just a Firmware issue since the pitch is Digital. My first unit was bought right on release back in August 2019 here in Germany. Has dead pitch range between ±7~8% :(

both of my units have this issue... it took me a while to realize as i was just learning how to mix but a year in if i know it's somewhere between 6 and 8 i just hit the x2 for accuracy. it does suck when you need to match a track and it falls somewhere between 12% and 16%... sometimes it falls into place but usually it will just be a bouncy non-linear mess especially when both records are on that range. i only just now built the courage to message the stores asking about warranty lol hopefully the pitch can be replaced.

If the pitch can be replaced by itself, def let me know! I think everyone would be interested to know what happens. Last time I spoke to my rep at the dj shop I go to, it was just kind of like an "it is what it is" sort of thing.

Silent update. Man those are the worst if you have one of the old models. Makes you feel shafted, though I didn’t buy one of these and I would’ve personally even been ok with the faulty pitch, but still. Very cool though

Thanks... yeh, I've got one old model and one new (fixed) model... and I'm just kinda thinking... well... in practice I'll never actually feel that difference, and maybe one day the pitch faders on both of them will need replacing, and then they'll both be good from there. Other option is to try and get a replacement, but seriously it's no big deal. One thing I forgot to mention though is the new model didn't come with the scratch sample record like my first model did.

Poor service by technics. They’ve denied there was an issue with early models when clearly there was.

According to someone I talk to at my local DJ shop, Technics acknowledged the condition in earlier models, but they refused to admit that it was a "problem."

Yeah, they can keep the digi pitch. I got lucky this year and bought a brand new boxed Mk5 and a mint M3D. Can’t fault them. The last true Jedis of the 1200 SL range.

Lucky, I was originally looking at a pair of MK5 too (a year or so ago), but the shop I was going to purchase from (Stokyo) ran out lol. They weren't brand new, but certified refurbished. Man, brand new MK5... crazy you were able to find it available.

Now that they fixed the pitch.. how is the isolation? I'm thinking about buying them, but I'm kinda worried about how they would be at a party scene next to speakers.

It's been fine for me, but I do some isolation things just to be sure. But I did that with my MK2s too... the whole concrete slab + foam underneath the decks. That's for spinning genuine vinyl records. For timecode, it doesn't seem to matter as much though.

Hi man..i removed quartzt lock from the mk2, pitch readjusted and im reaching +-8 ...then i moved the range ro -6 to +10...now its much better for mixing. Im ready to install a switch with another crystal osc and o expect to reach -20 to -8 for scratching... i like the old ones cause the tuning potential.. and i have straight to arm and removable cables also :) ... maybe its better to by some vestax, but im in love with my 90's wheels :D ... greetings from germanyyyyy :)))

@@DJFeelsGoodman its like a sl 1200 mk1 ... when you pitch bend with your fingers the platter doesnt try to fight the speed. (decrease the speed of the platter with your finger and youll see that the platter push agains your finger force at intervals, with quartz lock removed it doesnt. It doesnt affect the torque, and of course you doesnt have the 0 pitch problem.) Its easy to do and reversible, so DO IT!! you have to recalibrate the pitch after the conversion...so again..DO IT!!!! :)

What year month is your turntable manufactured? I have gr made in 2022 June. It has pitch problem about you mentioned earlier model of MK7

I wonder if your stylus setup is affecting the results. The percentages aren't staying locked on screen. I'd try refit your stylus as from the video it looks like they're angled?

It's the same with different styli. From what I've read, this is what is described as the source of "wow and flutter". This is also why Serato DJ built an option in their software to counteract this, called "Anti-Drift"

I just got a pair and noticed 1st one is fine, but 2nd one is showing 8% at 7.5% just a little off Any ideas on how fix this? Thanks Mine were shipped directly from Technics Wherehose this month.

I don't think it's fixable by the user. Or if it is, I'm not aware of the method. I have a pair also, and on one the pitch is fine. On the other, I reach 8% near the 7% mark. Similar discovery as yourself.

Hi man, Question :D ... when you change the pitch on the mk7, how big or small are the "step change" in the bpms from Serato/Traktor? (I mean resolution) After testing the other turntables ,it appears that the difference between all of them and the mk2 its HIGH, i notice that on large mixes. For example ith the mk2 i can make increments from .02 in pitch, sometimes .03, 04 05, with the others, it ranges between .07 to 1. it doesnt seem to much, but it really is. With the mk5g i also get this type of resolution from the digital pitch. but what about the MK7??? :D (in serato i get weird reading, not too stable, it seems that traktor tracks better, for a small margin or Maybe its my Computah.)... Frohe Ostern!!!

So... I have 2 mk7. On my newer one, the step changes follow the written numbers on the pitch slider (2% marker = 2% change in pitch, etc). On my older mk7, this is true as well until you reach the 6% mark. If i remember correctly, at 6% the pitch is also 6. But when you move it to about 6.5, the pitch is actually 7, and then when you're at the 7 mark, the actual pitch is 8%.

@@DJFeelsGoodman i dont mean the range, for example, i move the pitch on the mk2 1/2 mm and the speed in traktor increments for example by .03 bpm ... thats what i mean, not the overall pitch range. :)
