That's some good quality cassette player right there. So many "sensors" and the mechanics look well built. Also, the belts are fine, too. Panasonic did a great job with this player. Fixed and ready to be used for many years to go. Congratulations!

Sweet. I used to have the 680, and when it died, I bought the DT690. I still have the 690, but the CD player is dead. I miss this style of portable, that looked "normal" and not like some mutated insect or alien spaceship.

Not like the cheap-ass belts some lower-level brands used at the time - nowadays those would all be a sticky gooey mess that can take anywhere up to 5 hours to remove from pulleys and flywheels. I recently dealt with a Hitachi rig with this exact issue.

i remember that singer, i was a big fan of his back in the 90's, he had a debut song called "my heart has a history". i used to have a real nice boombox like that, it even had surround sound with two extra surround speakers poking out of each side. i remember it weighed a ton though! especially when full of batteries

I had this radio in the 90's - 1994. Sounded very good for being an all in one. Woman downstairs did not believe me when i told her it was a radio. She had complained nicely about the strong bass. I had her come upstairs and see for herself, she did and i had it at the level i listened at. Not super loud, she was amazed and said i expected big speakers and a big amplifier. Nope just a radio on my desk.

Watching the problems you fix here also takes me back to early high school... when the scary kids had smaller boom boxes it got loud. Sometimes kids would get ahold of the completely trashed school boom box and it was always funny when someone would have to dive across the room to stop it from eating their early 'gangsta pop-rap' music tape. You'd hear the treble start to fade down and then crinkling as it slowed down and someone would shout NOOOO! Of course some else would steal the same boom box from the AV closet and it would happen all over again!
@RoughJustice2k18

I remember those days - the issues with school boomboxes is they were never serviced or cleaned which may explain why so many tapes got wrecked in them.

Very good video of your repair. I had this unit from the early 90's until the 2000's, when the unit was in the sun in the car and the CD top distorted and I had some cassette problems, after which I did not repair it and disposed of it. It was a good unit and I have seen some offered on eBay. It also had Automatic Music Selection, AMS, which let one scan through the music and if one left a space between tunes, one could skip to the next tune.

I sold many of these Panasonic RXDT 680 and 690, and the smaller RXDS20... They sounded good for the price, had a digital tuner and a remote control, and apparently they were made to last. 30 years later, I was delighted when you rescued this one from dust. It's surprising the CD has not suffered (door switch, optic unit...), and the potentiometers seem to operate without too much noise! I remember clients complained about a missing power cord, untill Panasonic made a little sticker that said it was in the battery compartment...

I find that using a strip of P1500 or P2000 wet & dry sprayed with dioxit works on most switches. It's such a fine abrasive it works well without scratching the contacts. Nice job. It's rare to find such a nice boom box in such good condition.

I know also the cassette transport mechanism. It uses the panasonic/technics ar300. A typical issue is a gear that gets missing teeth for playback /recording and also the tape sensor leaf switches that gets corroded or oxidised over time.

Purchased this model for $10 + $16 shipping with remote control and operation manual. CD still not working and tapedecks had exactly the same issue described in your video! Common issue? Don't take it apart yet, however fix the tapedecks on the outside by dipping (not spraying) some wd40 onto the contacts and wiggle it. It take some time to do its work, you don't need to sandpaper the contacts., take your time. Tapedecks only play tapes in one direction, reverse direction. Takeup wheel in forward mode (eat tape mode) does not have to power to wind the takeup reel. That is weird, because it is a gear controlled - see 17:45. The CD, the laser unit tries to focus (don't move) and motor doesn't spin - no disc message. I used my phone's camera to spot some light activity but cannot see anything. Bad laser? It is a beautiful device when cleaned and sound is decent. The downside is that this model doesn't have an AUX input however have seen some mods already. You make great videos maybe you have to do some repair and mods videos.

Sorry to ask, but I passed my RXDT680 on to my parents many years ago, but just recently its stopped producing sound from ONE speaker. Swapped speakers and confirmed it’s circuitry in the unit. Did you ever come across this in your years and was their a specific/common point of failure? Or will I have to start testing components…I’ve already dug into it and pulled the speaker/amp PCB out to look for burnt/blown components but nothing obvious…will clean balance control too and check forums, but you seem to know this device well and maybe you’ve seen it before. Like you, I want to get it back running properly for another 25yrs!

Hi there, Sir. After watching this very informative video, it is more than clear to me that you know 100% more about this ‘boombox’ & or any other one, than I ever will. So in that regard, I have just one question regarding this exact same model. On the rear of mine, because one of the spring speaker terminals clip push release connectors is ‘out of it’s socket’ (the red on, to be exact) the red/white speaker wire that goes into it does not stay in place. Thus making the right speaker cut in & out. So I was wondering might you have any suggestions as to how I could temporarily prevent that from happening. And or would I have to replace the entire terminal pertaining to the right speaker. If so, any idea of what kind of cost I would be looking at to do just that. The cost of said terminal & the repair, I mean. Any help & or tips would be greatly appreciated. A great weekend to you & yours. Cheers!!!

I have this same unit. Both cassettes work, CD works. The tuner works, but presets do not, so it has to be manually tuned. Timed recording doesn't work either. These last two issues are most likely just the switches...we'll see. The S-bass knob doesn't have much effect, so I think it's not working right. Going to try to restore it fully. Fun project, though I have no idea what to do, so I'm counting on channels like yours to give me insights. Keep up the good work! If you know where I can get a schematic I'd love to know! Might come in handy trying to figure out the S-bass issue. You've gained a new subscriber.

I was wondering if the plastic covers on the switches can be easily removed if the tape doors are still in place? I'm not sure if you are familiar with the RX-ED77, but the tape deck is hidden underneath a pop-up control panel on the top of said unit and to take the doors off pretty much requires ripping the whole unit apart just to properly clean the switches. Hi there, I have this RXDT680 but my CD is broken. I bought a new cd lens but it doesn't read CD's. Please can you help me figuring out where can I find the audio in for CD so I can use a portable cd player on it?. Thanks in advance for your advice

Hello. I really like your video tutorials about repairing different staff. One can learn so much from them! I was wondering whether you happened to come across Portable Stereo Panasonic RX-ED77, widely known as Cobra. Two decks are completely unresponsive when I press the play, rewind or fast forward buttons. I once tried to change the belts but I'm afraid I did something wrong. I'm also thinking that main gear (rdk0026) can be the reason why it's not working. Can you advise something?

Nice boombox :) Perhaps it might be good idea to check the cd player a bit further, playing at least one cd from start to finish as it might start skipping at some point. I have Sharp boombox from 1992, tape player works fine but the CD player is just like I described, basically works but starts skipping and stuttering randomly at some point while playing the CD. No matter if it's a CD-R or real music CD. The laser unit is noisy when it moves from the furthest point to the start. One of the metal rails looks like there's corrosion, have tried to lubricate it with silicon fluid (the stuff which is used for car door rubber seals) but makes no difference.

Thanks for making this video. I have a Panasonic RXDT680 and I would like to know how to turn off the sleep button. When I turn on the power button, it only turns on if I push the sleep button. Also, my tape deck doesn't work. And sometimes the cd player works but the unit does not seem to detect the cd or the tape. Radio works fine. If you have an answer I would really appreciate it.

Good day, Sandra Bodkin. Your question and comment posted in this video’s “Comments” section came a number of months ago, perhaps by early or mid-June 2021. So I don’t know if you have resolved any issues you had with your Panasonic RX-DT680, the same and model of portable stereo in this video. You stated in part: “Also, my tape deck doesn’t work.” Well, as you know, the Panasonic RX-DT680 is a dual-cassette-deck, digital-tuner CD player boombox, originally supplied with a remote controller. When you wrote “my tape deck doesn’t work,” which tape deck did you mean? Is it Tape Deck 1, the left-hand, non-recording deck? Or is Tape Deck 2, the right-hand, recording deck, the faulty one? And do you know how extensive the failure of the faulty cassette deck is? Does the faulty deck try playing an audiocassette of any bias (“Normal,” “High,” etc.) and of any length, but then suddenly stop? Does the erring tape deck try rewinding or fast-forwarding the cassette, only to suddenly stop before it has properly wound or rewound the cassette? Or maybe you have already stated the problem: that “the unit does not seem to detect … the tape” in the first place. The tape-detect ion tabs that the repairer spent some time speaking of, cleaning with DeOxit D100 contact cleaner and adjusting in this video might need some servicing in your unit. You also state that your ‘680 sometimes fails to detect a compact disc (CD) that you try playing with the stereo. Is such a CD a so-called “retail” CD, professionally mastered in a recording studio and sold in the tens of thousands (if not millions) of copies and of no more that 74 minutes’ running time? The nature of the mastering of the CD and its production volume (“small batch” production, say, by a DJ or “large volume” production by a big record company) do matter. A CD over 74 minutes in length might not play properly or at all in older (pre-1995) and/or non “high end,” non “reference standard” CD players. Older CD players were made to play CDs mastered with “Red Book” standards, which were established in the early 1980s, when CDs became commercially available. Those standards require CD players to play CDs with a total running time of 74 minutes and probably nothing longer than that. A very long, mixtape-style party CD or one of those classical music CDs almost 80 minutes long might not play properly or at all in the CD player of a relatively good yet relatively inexpensive sound system like the Panasonic RX- DT680 that was made in the early 1990s, according to info’ found on the Internet. And, of course, music or non-music audio recorded (or “burned”) to those “write once,” recordable CDs (CD-Rs) probably can’t be played at all in an older boombox like a ‘DT680. Fortunately I think my slightly newer Panasonic RX- DT75 can play CD-Rs - well, some of them, I shrug. And, of course, older CD players such as those built into the Panasonic RX- DT680 and the RX- DT75 likely can’t play the re-recordable, “rewriteable” CDs (CD-RWs). I seem to remember reading something (close to or more than 20 years ago LOL) about CD-RWs not having “shiny” enough undersides or playing sides for the pickup laser or lasers of most older CD players to ever (or consistently) read and play the audio contents. True, older CD players might be able to scan and display the track count (say, 16 tracks) and the total running time (say, 73 minutes, 52 seconds) of a CD-R. They may be able to scan and display the track count and running time of a 79-minute, professionally studio-mastered CD copy. But they probably won’t be able to play it properly. Those machines might play such an extra-long and/or home-“burned” CD once and, surprise, surprise, never be able play that CD again. More likely, such CD players will play the first 73 minutes or so of an extra-long CD or the first track or two of even a shorter, home-recorded CD … and get stuck or so. Their electronics won’t be able to keep playing the remaining tracks of a CD-R or the last track of the 79-minute Baroque Era CD because the longer CD’s last track begins beyond the 74 minute mark, beyond which most older CD players weren’t programmed to keep playing. Of course, “high end,” “reference standard” CD players - which, before the year 2000 probably often cost over US$500 - would probably be able to play CD-Rs of any length and those longer, over-74-minute “mass produced” CDs. But far from everyone could afford such pricey gear in those days. And just about any CD player boombox - even the best ones made by world-famous brands like Panasonic - was certainly no “high end” or “reference standard” CD player. I also remember that some enterprising folks have found that one can open up CD players and VERY carefully, VERY slightly increase the laser output of the diode or diodes supplying the laser beam or beams used to play the CDs. That adjustment should work to play CD-Rs and CD-RWs with older, typically non-“high end” CD players, though that adjustment likely won’t work for playing extra-long CDs; a separate adjustment of the laser beams’ sliding pickup module is needed. In any case, the laser intensity adjustment must be ever so tiny, perhaps only a millimetre or two of increase - turning the screw to the right, I think - so as to avoid burning out the diode or diodes and having a costly repair - maybe too costly a repair - on one’s hands. (Not good.) It’s good to know that the digital tuner of your boombox still “works fine” - well, as of June 2021 or so. There is considerable music-listening choice from FM radio stations and even from AM stations, though stations broadcasting between 520 kilohertz (kHz) and 1720 kHz usually broadcast only in mono, not in stereo. Well, they did when these boomboxes were made. Anyway, monoaural music listening won’t discourage some listeners, especially if they are listening to mono “oldies” from the ‘50s, the ‘60s or even the early ‘70s. (Would that there was better music-listening choice here where I live.)(Shrug) The issue with the SLEEP function of your RX- DT680 should be solved after looking through a copy of the “Operating Instructions” manual. There is a reasonably clear, scrollable copy on the website manualzz.com. The search term “Panasonic RX- DT680 Manual” should obtain that link. Anyway, to wrap up this very long “Wall Of Text” of mine LOL, if you still have the Panasonic RX- DT680 and if its problems haven’t been resolved, if you haven’t sold it, donated it or given it to a repair-savvy relative of yours, try contacting the “qualified personnel” that the warning messages stamped into all those electronics’ rear panels caution us to refer to when problems arise in ‘Tronicsland. You could even try contacting the 12voltvids repairer himself. He still lets some people send in their gear for him to look over and try repairing it once in a while. He also looks over and sometimes repairs the obsolete and/or damaged tech that people ship to him or drop off at his place. He MIGHT agree to work on your Panny (a nickname among hobbyists for that famous electronics brand). But, of course, you have to decide if it’s worth the effort. He’s Canadian, as his accent should reveal. According to what someone wrote in praise of him in another 12voltvids’ “Comments” section, he lives in British Columbia, southwestern Canada. If you live in the U.S. - and depending on where in the States you live - shipping the big stereo (with sufficient insurance) to and eventually from his address might cost over US$400 for both trips. Is that cost worth it to you - plus the repair costs (which he will probably be reasonable with)? Well, have a good day. And do stay safe in these epidemiologically and morally fraught times.

@@uzodinman358 Thank you for giving me a thorough, competent and informative answer to my question. Just to let you know, I downloaded and printed a copy of the Panasonic RXDT680 manual which I found online and read it. One: I turned off the sleep button and now have no problem keeping the radio on. Two: The cassette player (the left one) can be repaired or examined. I live near a repair shop and I am sure they can fix it. Three: As per your reply, the CD player does play certain CD's and not others and so the problem is with the kind of CD that was inserted. Because it is from the 90's, the CD's do not all play. I will as the same repair shop if he would look into it. Thanks again for taking the time to answer this question. Stay safe and have a good day.

I got a Panasonic RX-DS620 (April 1991 mfg date on bottom, which I had since probably 1992) and I while radio/CD player work as expected, the tape deck works to a degree as if I put in a tape and play it in the forward (or reverse) direction it will play as expected. but I cannot use the 'fast forward' as it will attempt with a click, but disengage as no actual fast forwarding occurs, and then stop and I can remove the tape if I want. but if I try to 'fast rewind' it will attempt (with the click etc but no actual rewinding occurs) but then basically freeze, hear it click like it stops, but the tape deck is still engaged and I cannot remove the tape and have to remove the tape deck mechanism and spin the white wheel with the gear teeth on the bottom a bit and after I spin it far enough the tape deck will disengage and I can remove tape like normal. so in short... as long as someone does not press the 'fast rewind' with a tape in the drive there is no show stopper issue. but if one does, you basically got to take the unit apart and remove the tape deck area and spin the white wheel with the teeth on the bottom, which is a show stopper problem. my guess is this probably ain't going to be fixed easily unless your familiar with the issue(?). but it's not a big problem since I don't really use tapes as it's CD player function is hands down the main reason I like this unit at this point in time since I just burn custom CD-R's (I burn them at 16x with ImgBurn on Linux Mint v20.3-Xfce) as those work perfectly okay so far as I played CD-R's (Verbatim CD-R 80min/700MB. which are Phthalocyanine dye ('CMC Magnetics' media code) that are nearly 81min in length without issue (I might be able to go over 81min but probably not much more than that) on this Panasonic RX-DS620 unit. I use ImgBurn's overburn function as 4 out of the 5 CD/DVD burners I have support overburning CD-R's.

my unit. loved it. then it got 360 3 phase current because of electricity problems. With the button of my oven I could direct the intensity of the lights in the corridor and after 2 days a big bang ang 11 electrical devices were dead: unrepairable stood in the report and I got 20 eur back from the insurance 15 years ago. Sony Mini-disc was the only device that could be fixed for 130 eur. 1 month old NAD Phono preamp was unrepairable. I have never beleived that. I should have asked it back fo the speakers or for the laser unit, belts etc. For 15 years I use the speakers of a 2001 Panasonic micro stereo system in light brown wood and they sound fantastic in the kitchen on top of a cupboard paired with a vintage silver Kenwood KA-3700. The sound of this boomboox was better than a 1993 Technics amplifier I sold because of its extreme loss of dynamics, sounding flat as th Philips FA-880
@arciphera
@arciphera 4 года назад
that is one of the most intensely gripping and passionately suspenseful accounts I have ever read about an oven that can control the lights in a corridor and make a bunch of electronic devices be covered by insurance yet not be repairable, with laser units and belts and other exciting stuff that should have been saved for use 15 years into the future. it ends on a real cliffhanger, too: an amplifier's extreme loss of dynamics is enough to make ANYONE tremble in their bed at night. could have only been scarier if the Technics and Philips units had been switched in the plot (hint, hint - script suggestion).
