I find it funny how today, people consider MFT to be "too small" of a sensor and effectively unusable in a professional setting, whereas an iPhone with a much smaller sensor is considered professional and perfectly acceptable.

@@ZachMayfield A bunch of the stuntmen who worked on the raid (from indonesia) bounced off from there and ended up showing up in a bunch of hollywood productions too! It's always fun to spot them in much bigger budget movies a couple years after the raid, I remember seeing the long haired guy in guardians of the galaxy.

I HATED using DSLR's when the wave hit. I mych prefered the 35mm dof adapters on a lightweight professional camera. I also liked the gh seires gh1 was easier to deal with than the 5D. But man when the af100 came out I shout an entire movie and everything else I could on it! It looks AMAZING on a theatre screen! It's truly a kick ass camera that panasonic refuse to ever revive. I just remastered my film the button, shot on THIS CAMERA. Check it out, it still looks gooooood especially upscaled! af100 for life!

My college had AF100s and it came paired with some Zeiss lenses. It was the camera that was always checked out, but also not because the head of the cage cave rental was very protective of them. It definitely was a sweet camera to use for the time!

Ridiculously entertaining video (thank you!), and you made that AF100 footage look good. Way better than the old stuff actually, which maybe says something about the capabilities of modern editing software we all have such easy access to? But here's the thing, GH5 bodies are available on eBay for $500-600. I think it would be pretty tough to choose an AF100 kit over a similarly priced GH5 body that you have to spend a few bucks rigging out. But that's just my thinking.. Anyway, LOVE THIS VIDEO!

I miss my AF100. My first big camera purchase. The form factor was so appreciated in a world of DSLRs. Shot several docs on this puppy. It came out at the same time as the Sony F5 too. Made for a crazy “big sensor” year at CineGear. Sadly it was stolen out of my storage several years ago. But it still holds a special place in my heart.

Hey Zach! thanks for the content, the ag-af100/101 was in my radar for years, and i always wonder, how good or improved could this camera be with one of the "new" external recorders using sdi? because i read the camera outputs 1080 50p 4:2:2 10 bit, something like a shogun inferno, ninja assasin, ninja V or the Blackmagic videoassist.

Even though I currently own a Blackmagic 6K Pro, I really would love to get an AG-AF100 for its practicality on a run&gun shooting on the streets. Paired with a Helios or a Super Takumar will give a gorgeous tasty image. I should know, I used to own a GH4 with a full Takumars set and a pair of old Tamron Zooms. In fact I should get another one again...

but no built in ND, extra fragile XLR box, smaller battery life, no SDI out, no adjustable viewfinder with the flipout screen, the buttons aren't bad on it tho, but imagine having a button basically for everything xD That was the beauty of this. If you came from broadcast and wanted to step into digital film/cine, it still gave you a compact broadcast body vibe but with the sensor, oh boy was it awesome. Still have mine, with 2 GH5's.

C100mk1 came out a bit later, and had time to watch af100 and 5F's strengths and weaknesses before releasing. I call that cheating :P C100 Mk1 is good if u already have EF lenses. Also has more vertical resolution. viewfinder isant as good as af100 tho

Had 3 of these a few years back, shot a ton of shorts and a couple features, and to this day I've never been able to match the pure cinema that this camera delivers (when properly exposed, and with the right settings, both of which were iffy in my case). Every once in a while I scope ebay to see if I can buy mine back at a discount. But man, these are not handsome cameras 😞

For my taste the image is just too soft. It must be that codec you're talking about. The image style is fine, and several shots in your little trailer were nice, but ultimately I'm just a big fan of razor-sharp image or at least something with some film grain.

I worked as an AC on a feature with it like a decade ago when it came out. I also used it on some videography projects a few years after that. It was pretty OK. Highlight roll off wasn't good... and I feel like the GH2 (same era) had better IQ with the bitrate hack. The AF100 was a neat idea, but like the EVA1 Panasonic kinda dropped the idea in a one and done.

Hearing people talk about the micro 4/3rd sensor creating a cinematic image has me rolling in how contrast everyone typically is now saying 35mm is the way to get cinematic footage because it allows for more bokeh... its almost as if its the person who is behind the camera shaping the image is really what matters lol ALSO YOOOO you never saw The Raid!!!! OMG that was a game changer for fight scenes. The actors did the action themselves and it has some of the most brutal sharp objects going into people and being dragged through them. This and the sequel! I actually didn't know they used this camera, I though it and its sequel were shot on RED but i know the second one was.

I wanted to like this camera, it's really solid on paper. But the footage looks so aggressively digital, I don't know how else to explain it. Its contemporary, the original BMPCC, had a smaller sensor but a much more pleasant look
