A beautiful six minutes of Derek who I first heard play at the Nationals, 1962, The Force Of Destiny. Manchester CWS won hands down. Composer, Gieseppe Verdi, arranged by Frank Wright, my first contest and I've never forgotten the occasion. My Granddad, Davy Wright ,was my guide for the day. With four grandsons all.aware although Davy had left South Shields to live in Somerset in 1926 he had attended the Nationals since the day's of the Crystal Palace from the early year's of the 20th century. A tradition he carried out until health failed him. My memory as a young child was around 1950 and into the 1970s how tradition worked in families. Although Grandad and Grandma left the North their sister and brother-in-law, Bessie and Ralph Legg met at the Albert Hall for the band contest and the relatives used London as reason for a holiday in the South. I'm met people, three church leader's with influence and power admit to having no regard for the brass banding tradition and to my detriment. If it's too my detriment as has been admitted it will be the clear disadvantage of others. Long Live Music!
