Australia along with many other Western nations are wrestling with the challenge of falling birth rates: the result of shifting cultural attitudes around how we view having and raising children. And while immigration can be a short term economic solution, it comes with demographic challenges of its own.
As Australia considers implementing a universal childcare policy, Erica Komisar, Virginia Tapscott and Peter Costello discuss the merits of different pro-natal approaches and the drawbacks of encouraging greater levels of institutional care for young children.

Whether we agree or not children are our sole purpose on this earth. Nothing is more rewarding and satisfying watching them grow. Sure, Australia isn't the country I remember 25-30 years ago but it's still a dam sight better than many other countries to call home. Government needs to be heavily reduced in size and more 'normal' everyday people should fill the ranks in Canberra to get things moving in the right direction.

I fully expect universal childcare to be a total disaster for those children's development and long term family cohesion. Babies and toddlers need mothers not caretakers.

As an early childhood educator, I wholeheartedly agree. Having worked across many centres, the horrors I’ve seen not only put me off working in the sector, but put me off ever putting my own child in care.

@@amazingjason455 that's rubbish, my grandfather worked as a factory worker, he worked reasonable hours and had a long retirement. he earned enough to raise a family of 4 comfortably (with a stay at home wife) Modern society has gone backwards, nobody can afford to raise a family anymore

Goodness gracious me, just support mothers to stay home and raise their families. NO NEED TO CONVINCE ANY POLITICAL PARTY TO ADOPT A PARTICULAR VIEW That will never happen just do it. Stick your systems somewhere else where they don't fit. YOU ARE THE LEADERS WHO ALLOWED ALL THIS TO HAPPEN.

The choice to have children or the number of children has become economic for many. Housing, cost of living, job security, study debt are all influencing factors. The answer is simple, fix the economic and housing unaffordibilty problems in the country and you’ll see an increase in birth rates. Most mothers (and fathers too) would love to be home raising their children. The time goes quickly but unfortunately most mothers (and or fathers) have no choice but to both work.

In 1970 men earned 40% more than women. That was when the birth rate was above replacement level. So men earned more so they could support their family. Women typically look for men who make more than they do. As the pay gap closes women say they are having trouble finding a man who make more than they do. So is the pay gap for single people real or not? Also in 1972 the pill was placed on the PBS. There are alot of issues affecting child birth stats and they don't all relate to child care, the cost of living or the pay gap. But what would these 3 fossils know they are only looking at data and economic modelling.

The university down the street from me has a women's business center. Amazon has preferential treatment for women owned businesses. the school I attended has special scholarships for women. women are eligible for no bid contracts that men are not eligible for. google has a women's startup accelerator. women can join the police, the military or firefighting with lowered standards. women in the aggregate are net tax recipients, men are net tax payers. men are forced to serve in the selective service in order to vote, but women are exempt from the draft. there are a lot more men than women who are homeless but there is no effort to equalize that. the average man pays anywhere between 25 to 65 percent of his income to pay for social entitlements, which is more than serfs were made to pay during feudalism. Social security and medicare are insanely bad investments for men both because men pay more in taxes and don't live as long. women complain about the pay gap but fail to note that men are much more likely to be injured on the job.

What a waste of time, they identified the issues and offered no solutions. Seriously, " have more children" these people are so out of touch. How is a family supposed to have a child if they cannot survive on one salary in this economy. My wife and I are on the median Australian salary and if one of us stops working guess what, we're homeless!

These people will probably make arguments about how people in mud hud squatted out 5 kids. It never bothered to ask whether anybody wanted them or cared about them.

Back in the 1950s, the USA had a high birth rate, and people say they wish to bring it back. However, it had a few things economists don't want to bring back. 1. None of that houses as investment vehicles bullshit. 4 years of a job was able to buy one. 2. You got a job with an HS diploma and had upward mobility if you did it right. In the modern cyberpunk corpo, the quiet quitter and go getter are always on the verge of being kicked off the corporate ladder. The motivation to work harder is not there. Bigshots demand we work as if it does exist. 3. Very few people coming in. Many so called "Conservatives" these days just want more people coming in, and make excuses. We all know it is part of the economy that favors the 1% over the masses.
@owenpope353

First there is a very high positive correlation between increased efficiency and increased mechanisation with the reduction in birth rates. I know you are left lobe dominant graduates but I assure you falling birth rates is not going to have any affect on productivity. If you want to improve our Western Society then encourage people to ensure at least one partner with the Northern European dominant genetic traits within their gene bank.
@skylinefever

Besides, whatever productivity happens, only oligarchs will see any of the benefit. Assembly lines make more stuff with less people, yet somehow we all have less than we did 40 years ago.

Politically a very difficult topic because both major parties (but especially the idealogical left) are desperate for control of the children's upbringing. The better option is to provide enormous income tax breaks for those who have 3+ children to the point where a good standard of living can be had on 1 income. Socially make it desirable to be a mother of many children as well.
@skylinefever

I often say these people want the birth rate to go up, so long as it also makes line go up on stonk market.

The West have a wonderful country to learn from. Even with a war, Israel has the highest birth rate in the West. Modern Israeli women who have careers still want 3 children as well. The West has many things to learn from Israel. Not only how to defend western civilization, but also raising families and giving women equal rights and opportunities.
