Panerai Radiomir Quaranta in 40mm | A Week On The Wrist

For Hodinkee's Managing Editor, Danny Milton, there are only a few watches that have perpetually caught his attention over the course of his endless enthusiasm. One of those timepieces is the Panerai Radiomir in its most basic of forms. So, when Panerai launched the Radiomir Quaranta in 40mm - the perfect size for his wrist - Danny jumped at the chance to wear it. And after a week on the wrist, he didn't want to take it off.

This is one of the better Hodinkee reviews. Danny did a great job sizing up all the points - both good and bad, placed it all in the larger history of Panerai, and defined the ideal buyer. Also, he leaned into a more conversational, almost confessional, “I'm going to tell you what I really think about this” watch. Good stuff!

Its beautiful, price is restrained, and the lug-to-lug is perfect, below 50 mm means almost anyone can enjoy it. Great review, Hodinkee.

It is actually 50m of water resistance now. They only release a few models which said 30m on the back, but from now on they all say 50m. It is actually tested up to 200m. However, they bare on the side of caution when labeling the water resistance. But every year they increase the listed water resistance on their watches. But best believe these can withstand more than 50m. Cheers!

I bought myself this watch and the newer productions have a 50m WR rating. The low WR comes from the very thin saphire crystal. I think this watch could handle swimming due to the screw down crown, but who would go swimming with a leather strap anyways...

Bought a Luminor Quaranta last October and tried on this very same Radiomir a month ago. The only issue I have with this watch is that it would take forever (demonstrated by the salesperson) to change straps as I am now used to the Luminor quick change system to switch from one to another. Still like it a lot but the 10-minutes-to-change-a-strap issue was a turnoff.

Lovely video and great writing as always but that 30m WR is simply bewildering. Anyone know of any videos out there that explains the reasons why they cant give this watch more water resistence? Even the diver style Seiko 5s are 100m resistant at 38mm.

For me, even more bewildering is the screw-down crown. Why would they do that? That’s the worst of both worlds
@pilotstyle123
@pilotstyle123 Год назад
@@Armoer You can picture a screwdown crown as a first line of defense. Against common belief it is not the scredown crown that gives waterresistance but the gaskets. However, the screwdown keeps off a lot of incidental splash etc that might otherwise reach the gaskets. For me personally I enjoy screwdowns because I like the interaction with the watch. It gives me a feeling of having a well machined product.
@Armoer
@Armoer Год назад
@@pilotstyle123 I understand, I enjoy it too. But a screw-down crown is a relatively expensive solution. I don’t understand why they didn’t invest in a good gasket that does a better job for probably less money.

@xu10j4rs1 It doesn't reduce trust for anyone who isn't naive enough to think depth ratings matter. It simply will not have a tangible impact to the buyers of this watch. I remember caring about depth ratings earlier into my collecting journey (which includes Rolexes, Panerai's, etc) and over time you realize it's a meaningless number for the vast majority of people who will never go diving in that watch. It's a marketing department fixation more than anything else.

@@dmeetsit is not about going swimming or diving with a watch. I will absolutely never do that sort of thing, but it gives me a relaxed wearing experience knowing I don’t need have to consider it. The 100m WR is a testament to how well the case is constructed and sealed. It is a testament of build quality and durability, even when you don’t go swimming with it. It shows that a brand cares to oblige to the standard quality levels we may expect from a 6000 dollar luxury (sports) watch

I don’t get why the reviewer believes the closed case back is a welcome feature on a watch that is 30m water resistant. Do you think a sapphire case back would bring it down to 15m? This is at an age when even Rolex is replacing their (extremely unattractive) solid case backs with sapphire exhibition ones. The solid case back on this watch is a major turn off for me. As boring as a PAM movement can look, I’d still rather have a view of it than some stamped, dead piece of stainless steel.

Lowered their WR (300m to 100m), took away their display backs, movement decoration /engraving and sandwich dials from the base models. The only option it to buy an older used Panerais but the fakes are so good no one wants to. Panerai will not come out with a database to help their used market with super clones.
