Tudor Pelagos 39 | A Week On The Wrist

Announced to no small amount of fanfare last year, the Tudor Pelagos 39 bends a generalist, everyday sports watch towards the insect-like specialization of the Pelagos lineup - one that has stood for a decade as the peak of Tudor's diving watch prowess. Downsized, down-spec'd, and decidedly more conventional - does Tudor's latest diver fail in comparison to its burly siblings? Or succeed by finding a new, wider path toward a somewhat less specific audience?

“Old” Hodinkee is so refreshing these days! It is different from what you get from “new” Hodinkee or any other watches channel. It is just RIGHT. Hopefully Ben will see the light again soon.

Sounds kind of nuts, but I’m not sure Ben cares too much about hodinkee’s trajectory. He’s often said that it’s great that it can pay the bills, but for him it’s all about the watches. Hodinkee was the writing project he used to get into Columbia and It’s like it outgrew his purpose for it. It made him a titan in the industry, but his focus is the watches not the business, which is his prerogative I guess. I personally feel the loss of Jack Forster very keenly. His charismatic, passionate, humorous and deeply intellectual approach to watch talk is hard to replicate
@robertschmidt9584

The Hodonkey is still good in some respects, but its marketing is clearly directed at Millenials and even Gen Z’s. They’ve lost their original direction and think that they will adapt to the market that best suits them. Watch journalism site to watch retail site. Unfortunately, they’ve abandoned many of those that started their site.

@@alexspink4325 I have no idea what Ben ambitions are. But I do get the sense that he believes the current path Hodinkee is following is the right one from a business perspective. I have my doubts but he may be right. He has a track record of great success after all. Personally, I identify with the Hodinkee content less and less. But it is really about personal taste in the end of the day.
@alexspink4325

@@rodrigorios3271 Yes I agree on all counts. I’d say he thinks he’s doing what’s best commercially, and perhaps he is. Certainly Hodinkee is a bigger corporate entity than it’s ever been. But I too identify with the content less and less. Though James here is a true echo of the old hodinkee and will always have my respect

I went to an amazing jeweler recently and tried on some incredible watches. The Tudor Pelagos 39 was the watch I tried on and just instantly thought "yes, this is the one." It's light, comfortable, perfectly proportioned (in my opinion), and just hits all the right notes for an everyday wear, no non sense kind of watch. It's one of those watches you really don't "get" fully until you try it on. Can't wait to pick one up when I have the cash.

I had the new 2022 Pelagos and was very unhappy. After just a few days the upper black ceramic bezel fell off just by turning. That was fixed in Rolex service. When I went to see/salt water, again this time the whole bezel did not turn any more it was stuck. Sounds crazy but so it was. Then I rinsed the watch the bezel action was again back to normal. Even rolex service was amazed by my complaints. That two things made me think about the quality so I just did not like it any more, sold it and ordered the submariner. Nice video James. I think in a sea of hype and hyperbole in the watch industry I have always respected and enjoyed your reviews ever since you pointed out that diving with a screw down watch rated at 100 m was absolutely fine for most if not all scuba. With regard to the review at hand..... I think its just another lazy alternative from Tudor for me James. The original Pelagos is ok, very functional, good design, maybe...ugly for me. I know its kind of a sacrilegious not to like Tudor but I just have never liked a single watch they have made. I also don't think that they are an alternative to Rolex. For me all of the Rolex watches from ceramic onwards are bloody awful too. literally baubles,...again...for me. I own a 33 year old 16610. .When compared to all modern watches it looks diminutive restrained and classy, its also 'the thing'. I have had this watch serviced just once in its life and yes, I have actually dived with it. (20 meters is enough for me. :) I wear it everyday and its consistently +2 every 24 hours. This race for tech advancement in an object / mechanism deriving from the 15th century is now just about the money. Just bung a 3135 Rolex movement in all mechanicals and give them all a screw down 100 meter crown and the watch market would crumble. knock it out for about 3 k, better still just make an aqua terra with a good quality quartz movement . Oh, Omega already did that, years ago and yes, I have also had mine for 20 years and it has a jump hour so no need for a silly GMT. God ,what is the point of those. We have phones?? a more general point is that the watch market has now got very very silly indeed and is in danger of disappearing up its own proverbial backside taking the vast majority its media commentators with it , present company accepted. :)
