@GhostFaceOG 7 лет назад
For a "one-off" encore Dime was not bad at all, but I think the God of Metal got it right in setting Pantera's assigned roles. Phil was the right singer for that band IMO. Having played that role myself, I know how hard it can be. The voice is a muscle that requires hours of exercise, talent will only take you so far & the rest is work. That said any version of Whiplash I hear always falls short of Metallica's, ...I can't help but hear James. ;-) \m/

Eddie Levit Honestly at the time it was just a great show, I wasn't in awe or anything like that "being in Phil's presence". My point of view was these dudes are out here trying to make it just like me, so there was respect. But I will say the vibe was definitely one were you knew they were "different " from ANYTHING on the scene at that time. The words polished and well honed come to mind, you can tell in that video they were already too big for a club act. Forever legendary now. Would I see one of Phil's shows now? Why not! Be it Superjoint Ritual or Down, I'd go.

A couple years later a friend and I went to the same venue for a concert advertised on the radio as a Pantera cover band called "Cowboys From Hell", so we thought hell yeah, let's check them out. It turned out to actually be Pantera playing a surprise gig as a warmup for their tour. By the end of the show apparently a few hundred people had shown up trying to get in when the word got out, which was amazing considering cell phones weren't a thing yet.

A fucking goldmine you captured in this video... Pantera live pre-Cowboys release.. still some elements of Power Metal in there (the logo and a few songs from that album in the set) and a hilarious cover of Whiplash with Phil and Dime switching roles. I found it hilarious/amazing when Phil broke a string during the intro and Grady in like a shot switching guitars. This further affirms to me that Pantera were a fucking tight as fuck unit, both band members and crew. They KNEW what had to be done, on a performance and innovation standard. This video also showcases a slightly more innocent time in the band’s career... before all the fame and drama etc. that later ensued. Thank you VERY much for sharing! Can I ask, was Dime as much of a party animal/rogue back then as he was known to be later on?

It's amazing how they went from "glam" metal to heavier stuff. Phil was a big influence on that but I think the other guys wanted to go in that direction anyway themselves as shown by them letting former Terry Glaze leave. Much respect. Armed with that they went on to become the destructive metal force they're known for. But the glam stuff really isn't that bad if you listen.
