100% disagree with Coach Taylor on this one. This was all on the refs. They decided to swallow their whistles all game and this is what happens. Good on Riggins for not taking it anymore.

It was all on the refs, but Coach kept telling the guys....don't play into it. I've played, I fully appreciate where the players are coming from. I'd have wanted to start swinging too. But he told em not to do that. That's why he freaked.

One of my all time favorite episodes. Smash getting it done. Riggins standing up for his teammate. And the clip doesn’t even show the coach McGill part where he stands up to the cops!!!!!! Just an awesome episode.

It was the very, very late hit on Smash that ended that match. Tim Riggins...showing the man was starting to become, standing up for the guy in his team he least understood at the start of the series, after hearing what the opponent said to Smash.

agreed. i played defense back then, one my teammates on offense got hit late af end of 2nd quarter i rushed that field & got in the dudes face who hit him, the rest of the defense followed & u can pretty much guess all hell broke loose b4 halftime lol. cooler heads prevailed tho as they do most of the times

I like that scene when the Panthers are sitting in the visiting locker room. The players are silent, the room looks cramped and dated with all that wood paneling. They can hear all the nasty booing coming through the walls, and they get an idea how really loud it is when coach Taylor opens the door briefly and they hear the opposing coach arguing outside. To me that felt intimidating at 4:24.

Mac McGill. Interesting that in pre-BLM days he figured out in racist Texas that the cops might be acting on their own. Coach Taylor is shown as clueless. They said Smash might have thrown the first punch when clearly white Tim Riggins had started the brawl by laying out the other player. If this show had been written after the start of BLM, the racial politics surely would have gotten a different treatment. Here it was used to give Mac a chance to redeem himself, but the cops' actions are far more sinister than the context and tone suggest, and they should have faced consequences.

Seems like an editing error. The game sequences show the score being 14-14 late in the second quarter. To get to 34-24 by early in the fourth quarter (high school quarters are only 12 minutes) would have required at least five scoring plays in barely 15 minutes of game time. That would have been a lot. So I think the Panthers were actually up 28-24 (four points) and Smash's touchdown run made the score the 34-24 that is shown on the scoreboard. It is not the only time the commentary or scoreboard did not match what was happening on the field, but I imagine that editing that tightly was tricky.

I think what makes this episode even better is that Tim disagreed with Smash all episode but he was able to see on the field what Smash and his teammates have been talking about and standing up for. And then he literally fought to have Smash’s back! Great episode, wish the Mac part with the police was apart of this clip.

@@dawsondudark he didn't know smash was called a racial slur. he assumed it was because of the lack of calls, late hits and tension. he probably assumed it was personal, possibly being racially targeted and didn't want to hear what really happened, but didn't know a slur was said. he would've been kicked out of the game if he heard what was really said. he wouldn't stand for that and would've understood riggins defending smash's honour especially during the mac drama and tami pushing him to stop turning a blind eye towards his friend.

No, he definitely knew. But he *still* has to say that. He knows all too well that (this is true) brawls like this in high school sports often result in double-forfeits and both teams being disqualified (you'd be surprised how often it happens - you can Google it and see that there's at least one example of this happening in some sport somewhere in the nation almost every year)!

3:37--Blatant late hit in the end zone, the player who hit Williams continues to taunt, then Riggins levels the player just to get him to shut up. That is when it all goes to pieces.

Fun fact - #1 was told to spit racial slurs at "smash" after the late hit, and they bleeped out one word in particular - You can tell if you reel it back. It gave the scene more content, and played well on Smash's ability to control himself. Happens at 3:43 - They mute his dialogue, most players were boomed during this scene and the crowd sounds were pushed into the film in post production. Pretty strong scene, I remember this scene - as well as the scene with Coach Mac where he stands up to the cops. Brilliant scenes and great writing. I miss football show's like this. Not for the particular issues, but with the underlying content that people often miss. There are quite a bit of lessons taught in this series. I'm sad It ended with 6 seasons, but still 6 is an ambitious and maybe a good number for them to end on. The series started with the QB Jason Street getting paralyzed from the waist down, and ended with season 6 with clear eyes, and full hearts.

Another funny detail I didn't notice until now (despite re-watching this episode and this scene in it at least a hundred times)... I was so focused on the players, refs, and coaches during the brawl that I didn't even notice that at 4:10, a bunch of *media* members have stepped onto the field (normally a *huge* "no-no" when the game is still going) and are getting close-up photos of the brawl, taking notes of the inner-workings of the brawl, and I noticed one person has a voice recorder up to his mouth and is apparently describing the brawl details into his recorder as it happens! A small but funny detail! Like, "oh, this is a historic brawl! Quick, we need *every* detail we can possibly get on this - let's go! Ignore the boundaries of the field! Let's go!" XD XD XD XD XD XD XD XD XD

Precisely this situation happened my freshman year. We were blowing out this team from a not a good neighborhood in their own house. One of their players cheap shotted our TE and a brawl broke out.

They messed up the scoreboard the announcer didn’t screw up and also the cardinal coach would know the game is over if they were down 17 that’s a big difference between 11 and at 4:10 u can see the score is 28-24

it may have looked like coach taylor was furious w/ his players for fighting, as he said he & his coaching staff arent about that, however that may have been far from the case. he was mad at the situation that unfolded & how the game ended, good coaches, real coaches, understand that & know how to handle the situation & their players in such ways.

Something like this happened in high school to a guy I know but it was between teammates at halftime. One of the teammates who was white called his other teammate who was black the N word and the after the black teammate hit him in the face another teammate stuck up for him and also punched the racist dude in the face.

Dunstin valley was the last school to integrate in the show and they even said earlier by the reporters that they are known for being racist. Smh. I'm surprised that guy from athletic board didn't even say anything to the officials on why they didn't make the calls on the following penalties to the defense; pass interference, face mask, and unsportsmanlike conduct after the touchdown. But, at least the Panthers advanced.

Earlier I was watching the scene where Tim McGrW who plays the father of one of the players, takes it upon ipon himself to head to the practice field after his son files a ball, as a sophomore I had a similar thing happen during practice and I will say it was embarrassing at the time.

Mark Douglas I mean there was a microphone being hanged up high, ones used for filming and stuff. I don’t believe they’d have microphones for a football game lol.

Gotta say I've never experienced anything this serious, but last fall there was a moment where a ref wasn't in position to see the player reach for the pylon when time ran out and called the game. The other team rushed the field and their players, fans, and even some coaches were being extremely bad sports. Had to grab some guys and hold them from even starting a fight.

There’s a school named Morgan High in Utah that has the same terrible refs and are even the same color as Dustin valley. They always have a great home record but usually get wrecked in the playoffs.
