You can use items past their best by dates. Don't waste food, one day you won't have it. We are headed for really hard times, worse than the Great Depression of the 30s. Stack it to the rafters!!! Not a joke...
We don’t waste any food around here. Some items are just not good (taste or finished product after baking) past their date. Thankfully, that’s mot the case for most foods!
We are ok.... 1980 was the same econ 101 pattern and hoarders wasted billions saving foods...also note the prices were the same as 2008 on everything...that's 15 years then hoarding, mergers, crop loss, we are coming back to a slightly elevated price...that is normal it's 2023 the farmers, truckers, industry was stagnate low wages..people need paid. I'd rather pay 15 years later than it increase small amts every 2 years. Please keep enough for you, donations, and for up to 4 extra people if they come into your life- donate that amt if not. Don't get anything you don't eat, never buy bulk fad emergency kits these are unfortunately never used and wasted food. Bulk up yes, but realize how you eat and know you are ok. God said no stone unturned you can't keep anything Jesus will provide love, support, food. Never be scared by headlines prepare but always shuck the whole pantry every 2 years.. donations are needed abd you need to give as charity to help with your mental state. There's still good in this world have that plan, get a solid loving church, and you will be awesomely fierce helping others. See a church counselor about any fears they have seen it all and help people with nothing. You have something it's called a giving spirit asking the church counselor how you can help them every month may be the best for idle worrisome hands & hearts. It's your fear of the past abd God needs you to be able to tell your story to those younger who need encouragement feeding a family. Get those words out, now many people won't listen but it helps to be a voice or guide, and to know I just need this much and God will help me help you. Groups are very important as in ww1 & 2 & Korean War we needed extra food, and extra work to unbusy our minds that was true learning as most people knew nothing of spiritual and mental needs we need those to. So get out there and find where you can make a difference. If it's just phone calls friending up and encouraging church members that's true work, if you have ability to made bundles for soldiers, or widows, or new baby's do so. If you can assist a church group- charity by recipes, knowledge let that be known to a pastor or priest. Find like minded people all will be there in Jesus's world as king get to know all of them now. He's your brother God is your father help his family and yours get thru this world with a giving heart, a get to know you attitude, and not a scared worry because this fog that turns everybody's head in anger is from Satan and he's mad, it's his last days and he was God's favorite everybody is upset by that he understand hatred, pain, losing a friend. Rely on him please and God bless your week. ❤ praying that you reach out to your church who needs your spark.
Your pantry shelves look a lot like the ones I had my husband build in my kitchen corner, and I love mine. I like to use a sharpie to mark the month and year on the front of the labels. It makes it so much easier for rotation.
We’ll be restocking the pantry soon. I’m just re-evaluating what all I want to store. And we have quite a bit of long term food storage that is not in the pantry as well as a milk cow, chickens, and a huge garden so we feel quite comfortable with what we have even now. But what you’re doing is very wise!☀️
Hi Audrey, I've never seen your pantry this low. I'm excited to see what you stock it with. I know you're excited to get all those empty jars refilled this winter. Great video.
I have things I don't buy anymore as well. I will tell you that the Aldi canned ham I used to make a ham and bean soup one time when I had a can of my northern beans that I was canning not seal. I sauted it with some onions and garlic and then added other things for soup and my family loved it.
This came up as a suggested video for me today. I love pantry tours...and am cleaning and organizing my pantry, lol. Your voice is very easy to listen too. Im probably going to binge some more of your videos today. Thanks for the tour!
Sir Kensington’s brand mayonnaise does not have soy in it. I bought mine at Walmart. It comes in 12 Oz plastic jars. Ingredients: sunflower oil, organic free range egg yolks, water, distilled vinegar, salt, fair trade organic can sugar, organic lemon juice, citric acid, lemon oil.
Many are claiming that the newer Ball jars dont hold up to freezing or even pressure canning the way the older jars did; ampnd still do. I have also looked at the new, smooth walled Ball jars (still in the box, still in the store) and they look much thinner than the jars from within the past 5 years. They also dont have any of the greenish tint which has been lessening over the years.
I’m not doing anything wrong, I’m just refusing to use seed oils. Olive oil and avocado oil are expensive and we go through a lot of Mayo…so our homemade Mayo is expensive.
Had a taste for something sweet and didn't want to go to the store today. Looked in the pantry and found a box of expired cookies ..... Yep, I ate them. They were kinda yucky 🤢 but it saved me a trip and allowed to to get something old off of the shelf. Guess what is getting replaced the next time that I go shopping 🛒 🍪🍪🍪 🤭
With Crisco, you can tell if its still edible by the texture, smell, and color once opened. It seems as if older Crisco doesnt lsst as long once opened. It seems as if measuring and freezing older Crisco gets it to last longer.
I too had a bunch of the Aldi canned hams. I found they work excellently in stuffed mushrooms!! You can freeze what you don't use for the next mushroom batch.
@@Pursuit.of.Simplicity You're welcome! I do too! I use grated parmesan in the stuffing mix too, with bread crumbs, sometimes green onions. I think I do them a bit different every time, but I have always added ham, and one day tried the canned ham and it was fantastic. I haven't figured out many other ways to use that canned ham with it's smoked flavoring, but really happy it works for these. :) Also walmart has the Chosen Foods mayo, but smaller jars.
Good idea for the muffin mix. I have some cornmeal that i won't use and i will be warming it for a morning treat for my chickens in the cooler mornings
Toni from Her Homestead Skills made a mayonnaise that looked really easy using an immersion blender. She did use canola oil in hers but you can sub out a better oil. It does need to ferment for 8 hours because she added whey for longevity
Nice stockpile. It may be needed this winter. We are stocking up as sales come along. Aldi haul is needed again. Shelf life foods may be all we work on for now.
I use Sir Kensington’s mayo, both plain and chipotle, and their ketchup too. Yes it’s expensive, but delicious and healthy and It’s one of the splurges we agree upon being worth it. We aren’t huge condiments users so they last a long time. My tomato soup recipe calls for carrots so that’s how I’d use up the mushy ones. It happens to the best of us sometimes lol
I was just going through my pantry last weekend and was amazed at how many holes I have. What it showed me is what I want to purchase again and what we can do without. Prepping isn't an exact science. Over time you learn what works for your family and what doesn't.
Yes! I love taking inventory a few times each year and reevaluating what we’re no longer using and what we need more of. Food storage is probably one of my favorite hobbies!😁
For mushy canned carrots, use the fluid to make pastas, rice, and as a soup/ stew base; adjust the recipie's salt depending upon how much salt is in the carrot liquid. Puree or mash the carrots and use them in banana, apple sauce, or pumpkin quick bread recipie; adjust the leavening ingredients in an apple sauce recipie because carrots have less acid. If in doubt, add spice more along a spice cake or well spiced pumkin pie; as in more spice rather than less. - Back in the day, Jannuary was canned food month with sales and i would get at least 1 can of peas and a coiple of csnne of csrrots to have a well balanced shelf. Every January the peas went to the food bank and the carrots became something; then i decided to simply skip them.
Consider moving the tartar to an inner column and putting the less clear and translucent mustard container on the end. Light and temperature affect the estentially mayo based items.
It’s odd. I fixed a cake mix from 2017 and it was good, but a pizza mix that just expired was no good, very stale.. I rotate my food and when I use something up, I buy 1 or2 to replace it.
I was coming here to say this. We used to be a Dukes fan but in the same quest of eliminating seed oils, we switched to the Chosen brand and we all love it. I can’t remember if we buy it at Sam’s or Costco…. But we’ve picked it up at Walmart too. ❤
You need to check it bc the Chosen mayo has rosemary in it. I didn’t care for the rosemary taste in everything. Double check me but I believe it’s that brand. I tried it years ago. 😊
How did you hang those shelves? I couldn't tell if they were floating or braced. The thickness says floating & I thought I saw a brace or 2. Maybe you did both.
Always enjoy your videos and love pantry tours. Are your banana peppers pickled or just canned in water or something else? I have 3 laden banana pepper plants and will have to harvest soon due to frost which will come before too long (low of 35 tomorrow so it's on its way before long).
Would love your enchilada recipe…and any other healthier versions of canned goods. I have fibromyalgia and dr wanted to put me on meds….it’s not severe yet but I did need over the counter meds daily. I stopped eating anything with high fructose corn syrup….I take over the counter meds maybe once a week… I’m sure there are more additives affecting us!
Go to Amazon and look up “Buddeez Kaddy 32QT” Sometimes they’re labeled for charcoal, wood pellets, etc. I’m not sure if they’re food safe, but I just slide the whole bag of flour, rice, oats, etc in there and put the lid on. They’re fantastic for pantry storage!
Chickens love cereals, oats, baking mixes with corn bit of a treat. We've also used them in dog food either cooking them up adding veg, fruits ground things. Dogs, goats, and chickens love treats...and chickens love scratcher grain mixes. Finding puffed rice they go wacko wild. Always donate to a church, blessing boxes on street corners for food before expire..but after a chicken goat and dog..well the shelf life is set by the presidents orders every 4 years evaluating certain food sold by dates. He gives his recommendation to the federal, military storage and then it trickles into mfg. That's why you can have the same can made by date and different sell by dates if a new president comes into power. Most people don't know that...but sell by is just recommended date for peak freshness. If people see issues they write it in the memo and the administration decides go out 6 months more as farmers can adjust crop losses etc.
H I have a question. EEverybody talks about food storage and what they have put away but what do you do with the waist I’m not talking about the food itself but the packages the cans etc. during a situation where society has broken down there will be no garbage collection so what do you do with the containers I see two problems with this first obviously from a health point you have no way to dispose of the empty Packages. Secondly the disposal of empty packages could tip off people scavenging to the fact that there was a food source nearby so what do you do with the empty containers once you’re done with them?
I saw a RU-vid video on getting rid of mice and rats by mixing corn muffin mix with baking soda which is non-toxic to all other animals. Might be one use if it isn't too rancid.
Make your mayo with melted butter instead of any oil. I've also done half and half oil and butter, but I really don't like the taste of oil in mayo. You can't really taste it in store bought mayo, but in home made mayo, it's quite gross, you can really taste the oil. So, melted butter alone, that's the sweet spot, all other ingredients the same. Takes 2 minutes, so easy.
Thank you! It must be regional. I checked the app and it doesn’t look like ours carries it. But my Walmart app is saying it’s in stock so I guess I’ll look again!☀️
Our costco carries Primal kitchen avocado oil Mayo which is good. But $$$. I haven’t found a clean one at sams sadly. I hear you on the prep time. I usually buy it now instead of making it. Somethings are just worth it!
A half to a teaspoon depending on the size of baking soda would easily fix it. However , buying premade mixes is pointless because it's so easy to put them together. Unless it has oil, it would not go rancid. Also, any peanut butter that contains any other oils indicating only one thing: low quality.
@@allisonhartley6712 don't know what kind of ingredients there are, but general rules of baking usually apply. Baking soda helps to rise, baking powder keeps risen. However, I see no point in these mixes because throwing together corn bread takes about 5 minutes. Single ingredients give more options when it comes to cooking in general, and they store much better.
@@janedowasjanedow Lol. We are from South Carolina. We use Jiffy. I have tried homemade cornbread and do make that occasionally. But Jiffy is still my favorite. I don’t eat enough cornbread for it to matter much.
Absolutely! I have four teenagers and there are SO many excellent reasons to keep a stocked pantry and other household items. Convenience is also at the top of the list!😂
Thank you! It does contain palm oil but palm oil is extracted from the fruit, whereas palm kernel oil is a seed oil, extracted from the seed or kernel. It’s definitely not as beneficial as avocado oil or olive oil, but it’s definitely better nutritionally than seed oils. Definitely important to read our food labels!☀️
