I was asked by a Russian interviewer about Papaji's attitude to teachers who charge money or ask for donations. He mentioned that he knew a woman whom he said had been told by Papaji that she could charge money for giving satsang. In my reply I said that, based on my experience, I thought it very unlikely that Papaji would ever give his permission to someone to charge money or ask for a donation.

And Major Chadwick wrote an article in the 1960s in which he explained why he would not be making a donation to the samadhi hall that was being built over Ramana Maharshi's body. He wrote that Ramana had been accessible to everyone during his lifetime and added that putting locked doors on a building over his body would ultimately mean that access to him would be rationed and controlled by the key holders.

@David_Godman 11 лет назад
The point I was trying to make was that neither Papaji nor Ramana Maharshi ever charged people or asked for donations from anyone who wanted to come and be with them. Papaji said on a number of occasions that once you start asking for money, the satsang setup slowly begins to get corrupted. Ramana Maharshi overruled his own ashram management when it tried to restrict access to him. Even when he was old and very sick, he was always available, free of charge.

Papaji travelled a lot and and gave satsang in many places. He never ever permitted anyone to charge for his satsangs. As I outlined in the video, if you wanted him to give satsang in your area, you had to pay all the costs yourself, and then let everyone who wanted to, attend free of charge.
@db4313
@db4313 Год назад
@David_Godman but still, when people are paying for your food/shelter/travel, there is still a transaction taking place, isn’t it? Someone is taking care of you. lt doesn’t look completely independent to me. I’m not saying it’s bad but I don’t see why charging a bit for satsang must corrupt - like any kind of teacher charges some money, why would they corrupt what they teach?
@David_Godman
@David_Godman 11 лет назад
Ramana Maharshi often had to battle his own ashram management in order to retain access for everyone who wanted to see him. When he was shown the new granite hall that his brother had built for him, he said that poor people would be too intimidated by the grandiose structure to enter it. And then he pointed out that the squirrel devotees, who had thronged his previous hall, would not have easy access to him in the new place.

@@rohitk9859 Here's a quote from Shri Datta in Tripura Rahasya in the chapter on the variety of sages and published by Ramana Ashram. "The vasanas not inimical to realization are not weeded out by the best class of jnanis, because they cannot seek new ones to crowd the old out. Therefore, the old ones continue until they are exhausted and thus you find among them some highly irritable, some lustful, and others pious and dutiful" This clearly states that because certain vasanas dont prevent realization, they can therefore continue after realization.. and they may vary according to the previous habits and so on. Ramana made the analogy of a fan. Even when the motor stops, it still has momentum and will continue to move. But there is no longer any force behind it and it is therefore non binding. Yet people will continue to extol the virtues of the more socially acceptable vasanas over the less acceptable ones. I guess Dattatreya was speaking in the Pre Victorian era Haha

In everyday life both Papaji and Nisargadatta were ferocious bargainers who made sure they never got overcharged in the market place, and both expressed annoyance if they saw that their foreign visitors were not doing the same. But neither of them ever considered using the hundreds of foreign visitors as a source of income.

(continuing from the previous comment) He had a small pension from his work which supported him when he was alone on the Ganga or in the Himalayas. However, if he was visiting devotees, the devotees would pay his travelling expenses, and also feed and accommodate him. In his final years he lived in a house in the Lucknow suburbs that was owned by his daughter-in-law, and he gave satsang in a rented building nearby. Devotees paid the rent and most of his household expenses.

Its pure and simple. When money is asked from you, go look somewhere else. People might be suprised, but in the spiritual sector there is more corruption than in most other sectors. When i was young my mother took me to India and Osho. The students there at some point sent back their children home, because they wanted to practice meditation in peace. Absolutly absurd. Absolute madness. A true guru doesent ask for anything. A true guru doesent even need followers. You go there if you need help and he/she will help you. Thats basically it. Nothing more to it.

In the west-Laguna Beach California OSHO/SRI BAGWAN RAJNEESH,had an ashram in Laguna Canyon.The sales pitch to young people in this rich community were told-if you want enlightenment from Bhagwan you must give him ALL YOUR MONEY as a sign of your desire for enlightenment.Of course many rich young people donated their inheritance & were introduced to tantra yoga/inflaming their sexual desires & when he was deported a few years later,the fleeced flock were kicked to the curb as the property was sold. He did the same thing in another affluent community further south in LA Jolla California.

Thank you for this video dude. It helps with a serious problem I have been having. I have been a getting nowhere Buddhist for 20 years. With the beginning of the coronavirus police states I started getting into firstly Shunyamurti which lead me to Eckhart Tolle then to Sadhguru. All of these spiritual teachers gave me a significant boost to my spiritual knowledge and I am now on a definitive path to self awareness because of them. But with all of them I have had a large mental blockage over their significant charges for spiritual teachings which introduce a lack of trust in them. So while I do still listen to their free RU-vid videos I am starting to rely mostly on the teachings of Ramana Maharshi, mostly by lomakayu who has provided free audios books by Ramana Maharshi and other old style spiritual teachers. His voice is very in tune with the books contents and I sit there with total attention. I am now adding your videos to my listening list so thank you for providing them.

All of the above snake oil salesmen (not gurus) you mentioned are all deeply identified with materiality therefore they are nowhere near enlightenment themselves..Tolle for instance is a serial plagiarizer and part of a business consortium who consciously set out this 'long con' with the absurd story of how he went from a suicidal depressive to a great spiritual leader...utter nonsense of course..but a great money making machine...And don't start me on sadhguru!

If I had not listened to them I would not be listening to Ramana Maharshi Now. So they are still of great value on the spiritual path for people who are not ripe enough for a real guru. People who are ripe enough will always find the guru they need, you can have faith in that.

I deeply feel that there is something foul in charging money for sharing God consciousness. It doesn't matter how well you argue for it.There was a time when I really suffered and had almost no money - and it deeply hurt not being able to freely join satsangs. This was when I experienced the hardness of capitalizing spirituality. I feel relieved that Ramana and Papaji were pure in this regard. ... in addition: I feel that charging money for satsags/retreats repells many people from entering spirituallity. If people are asked for money they obviously become critical and hesitant... but this topic is tricky because most of us are embedded in a capitalistic system where everything requires money ... so I also think that it's fine if the expenses are covered by the participants. Just the idea of making a profit or business out of it feels sick to me.

I agree.There are so many “gurus” out there all too willing to let the desperate charge up their credit cards to go on a retreat in pursuit of salvation. God provides for true Gurus. As Jesus taught, one cannot serve two masters: one either serves God or they serve Money. Most people worship Money (mono-eye).

Yeah you're correct. But with Ramana Maharshi or Papaji, they haven't done Bhajans and Music...But Mooji Baba is doing that. And for spreading this consciousness, we need some money otherwise, it may become local to one place. but now, Mooji Baba is travelling across the world and increasing the consciousness of Satsang. For that we need some money and also some good people are living on our charity, so it's beneficial also..

Papaji came to India in 1947 as a refugee from Pakistan with thirty-five members of his family. He had to support them all for several years in Lucknow. In the early 1950s he took a job with a mining company, setting up and running mining camps in remote parts of India. He retired in the mid-60s when he was in his mid-50s. That is a normal retirement age for many Indians.

I choose to think about all the free content that is made available on the internet. While it's true it is not the same as seeing in person, there are literally hundreds of hours of teachings available on RU-vid, and then there is the live streaming of the weekly Satsangs which are generally more than three hours long and made available for free. To me, I don't feel at all restricted, even though I cannot afford to travel. I feel grateful, and I feel my lack of funds is due to my own karma.

The issue of money has always plagued teachers of liberation. Stephen Wollinsky points out that teachers who need their followers (for money) will trap and keep them. Those who don't need them can do what is best for their liberation, even sending them to other teachers. I followed Maharishi Mahesh for many years and his mass movement project required money, giving it a commercial flavour. Feeling trapped I struggled with the conditioning that kept me there. I know from personal experience he had great powers of consciousness, yet my most profound experience came long before meeting any guru - we do what we do! We are beyond form or concept. In that sense teachers are also part of the game of Maya - listen to the inner teacher.

The modern western world is expensive. I think it’s a mistake to cling to this rule. I think it’s the teachers intent that is what matters. If they are looking to be wealthy then yes that’s terrible but if they are just trying to make a living I don’t mind paying a little. Also, many modern teachers who do make a living teaching also offer most, if not all of teachings online for free on RU-vid. I think getting hung up on this is actually a little bit of an egoic trap.

As from hindu family my family would only give out of love but the amount usually is in counts of 5 for example $1.25 or 3.25 ..the logic when we give a reminder of 1 should stay. No one charges when comes to yoga lessons or for some spiritual advise from gurus or teachers of yoga..cos simply put when you let go spiritually...you should also let go love for money except share your gifts with others with no $$$$ bonds.

Thank you for the video. It is very nice informing... And if there is something corruptive about Western mentality, how would it be changed? By keep on continuing asking high prices?.. Yes, of course the situation is different, the life is more dependent on money in the west, you need to pay for the place and so... but that can even be arranged, if the intuiton is there. In the beginning, if you have a smaller audition then maybe ok... But if you have a stadium of people coming and also earn from books and by joining tv programs, then why you still charge money? Is it that you really need this money? And as I see, telling like, this money goes to poor etc... is a fake excuse...

Money is neither good nor bad, it's just a source to full fill our physical and worldly needs. As far as money is for meeting expenses,there is nothing wrong in it. One should always be vigilant ,that it doesn't become source of satisfaction, any desire or profit ,on the path of spirituality otherwise it may hamper the progress but charging money is not always wrong, as nothing can be arranged (even a small gathering) without a money and it is certainly not fair if the burden falls on any single person . Few people can be exempted of charges , in case they are running out of money but rest should be charged equally in order to avoid overload on any one person. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

I would say that just because Poonja didn't charge money, doesn't put him on par with Ramana. They both also had arms and legs, but that doesn't mean they are equal, or "the same". Mr. Poonja had a small pension, and already had a place to live, so he didn't happen to need money. Nonetheless he did brag that (paraphrased) "people bought him train tickets, fed him and showered money on him so being a guru was very profitable!"

Whatever are the economics, the price for each of the volumes on Papaji (nothing ever happened) Rs. 800 is quite high and not within the reach of many in India ( In the store opposite Sri Ramanasramam). However in Amazon I noticed a price range of $7 to 83 for each volume. If properly priced and marketed intelligently in India it would be more popular than Autobiography of a Yogi

I remember a few years back there was a RU-vid clip with you talking to Papaji where he speaks directly about how charging money corrupts spiritual teachings. I've looked for it since but can't find it so assume it was removed. I believe it was cut from one of the longer interview videos you had with Papaji. It is amazing how many teachers nowadays promote the teachings of Papaji but selectively remove anything he said that may not serve their own interests such as profiteering from spirituality. It is weird to watch people like Mooji (who I believe is a good hearted person) and the masses that have started to surround themselves around him, all looking like they are Krishna's milkmaids, it is starting to look a bit culty. I guess it is like Papaji said that one has to be eternally vigilant on this path as it is so easy to fall off the swords edge, or as Barry White said "Different strokes for different folks" :)

Abiding without concepts is the no-mind, stateless state. If there are no concepts at all everything is seen to be Brahman including charging or not charging, right or wrong, higher or lower, concepts or no concepts. Nisargadatta didn't charge for satsang, but he charged for beedies. Papaji had his pension. Ramana received unsolicited donations. Other, modern day teachers, such as Francis Lucille, Rupert Spira, Ramaji, Peter Brown, Ganga, Gangaji, Karl Renz, and A. H. Almaas flat out charge. So, should a teacher charge? Yes, no, yes and no, neither yes nor no.

Did Rama, Krishna,Buddha,Jesus,Mohammed, Shirdi Sai Baba ,Sathya Sai Baba Papaj charge money for teachings? NO, and they still have the greatest following and influence on seekers of truth. In these modern times,Books, dvds, Hall hire,accomodation has to be paid for of course,but it has to be at the actual cost,no profit at all. If truth is being taught then Truth will provide all needs.

@@ShervinZ Prophet Muhammad had more than 60 wives? haha! Stop spreading misinformations you fool! Already proven that you do not know anything, you hear some gossip without research, like all of you liars who are to naive and lazy to research to find the Truth about a subject. To be correct, he had 10 in total, some claim maybe 12-14. some of them were widows, 1 of them were a jewish slave and he gave her the freedom and married her. in those times, being a widow (hardly gets married again by another men) or not having a family is a deathsign. He took them as wife to provide them and care for them. He just had kids with his first wife, who was his only wife, till she had passed away! None of the other wives gave births (what does this tell you??) The bitter Truth is, you all who do gossip about Prophet Muhammad does not know anything about his real Nature nor the Nature of Islam. (you are a victim of modern Propaganda against Islam to think the way some powerful men in politic want you to think to spread misinformations to generate hate amongst Men and this ensures the dividing of Humanity.) But luckily it does not matter what you and others of your kind think about him to be true. Islam is the youngest Religion of all Major Religions, yet its already the second largest Religion and becomes the largest in few decades. You cant do anything about it, it happens through Gods will, because he was his final Prophet. Also it was WRONG to have more than 60 wives in those days ! Prophet Muhammad encouraged everyone to have only 1 wife, so the average Men can provide his wive 100% and give her all she needs (love). Maximum 4 wifes, IF YOU are able to provide and love and treat them all equally. IF you are not able, its forbidden. Prophet Muhammad was an exception, but it was for a very good reason.

Truth is not concrete. Truth has no boundaries. Truth is not an attitude. Truth is not necessarily moral in the way that morality is understood by our limited human minds. The mind can never understand truth. And unfortunately, most of us , like yourself, never allow us to go that far , beyond our conceptual understanding of the truth. I myself would love this but I do agree also that it is different in the west. There was an interview with Tolle where he discusses this himself. He suggests there is argument for and against both sides. He also said in the west it is highly viewed by the collective that if there is no charge, there is no value or skill. We have a messed up belief that associates cost with quality. Until it changes, where does that leave our teachers? Tolle & Deepak succeed well here in commercial USA.

Nearly 5 years since this video was posted and seemingly more relevant than ever. For those in the know of how much it costs to get a teacher in, run a series of events paying all the expenses, as well as a percentage of the turnover often paid to the person or group organizing it, it's not hard to see that some well known teachers 'on the circuit' could quite conservatively be taking home 250k for a couple of weeks work. In the case of some of these bigger names these days, like Mooji, (or Sri Mooji Baba as I see he is now being called) may be charging plenty for various retreats but also bring in large amounts of cash through donations. Tolle is on another planet altogether and can fill stadiums all over Europe for 100 euro or more per seat. There's very good money in this business if you know how and people should see through this nonsense. No matter how they dress it up and how much supposed 'truth' they speak, they are commercial business operations. Ramana Maharshi has set a wonderful example for us all on how we can live our lives. The purity of intent is very important, meaning the effects of the teachings is very subtle. These ones making plenty are subtlely teaching us something that may not be helpful in the long run.

Western culture and expectations are different. I believe Mooji's satsangs in India are free, but in the West there are venues to be paid for. I think a high enough amount probably needs to be charged to restrict attendees to the amount the venues can accommodate, and there is the issue of not disappointing attendees who fly in from abroad just to attend a 2 or 3 day intensive. IOne should take care not to be overly judgmental in these matters.
@lucyhartman1501

Mooji doesn't give "satsang". Sat means truth. Mooji's "instant awakening" shtick is not the truth. Ramana never appointed Papaji as any kind of successor. He never recognized him as realized, and never asked him to teach, or give him permission to teach. Mooji represents the whole myth of a "lineage" from Ramana via Papaji. You'll notice Ramanashram itself has nothing to do with this non-existent lineage.

To understand why involvement of money with satsang is corruptive is a subtle point to perceive. In my opinion, it's because of the very nature of satsang. Satsang means association with Truth. It requires 2 elements - the seeker and the 'teacher'. For satsang to even occur, the teacher needs the seekers as much as the seekers need the 'teacher'. Otherwise, no channel, no vessel. For one side to captilise financially on the other is therefore immediately an energetic imbalance. Also can be called a corruption. Also, of course, depends on what you want, purity is purity, recipe is recipe. Depends entirely on what you want for lunch! Ponder it!
