I lived in the country so there were no paperboys. We had a paperman named Doug who drove a 1968 Jeepster Commando until 2004 and very often took out our mailbox and paperbox with his front fender. RIP Doug.

I wonder if any paperboys used their income to buy Paperboy so they could play Paperboy when they weren't being paperboys?

The Master System port is really excellent, and quite possibly my favorite of the home console versions. Usually, the NES ports have better game control, but Paperboy on the SMS was a real exception to the rule.

Another great video, I really appreciate you including the vintage commercials for these, so much nostalgia from growing up in the 80s and early 90s

there's an infinite score glitch in PB2 - in the obstacle course, there's two pipe things that spit your paper back at you. They're across from each other, so throw a bunch of papers in them and then crash. The papers will keep spewing back and forth, making the points rise without the game being able to end.

That commercial was amazing, total encapsulated what the game is.

I remember I had paperboy 2 on nes, but shared with a friend who lent me #1(I did have a soft spot for those hotrodding grannies). He then moved away with my copy and no one believed me that 2 was on NES unless I showed them the actual case. So nice trip down memory lane! In 2 my fav thing was knocking the pig off the bbq and it running off. I hated the obstacle course in both of them, and I'm actually really terrible at both, but they are a strange type of fun. I always loved the art of the houses. I tried the n64 version recently, it is made of nightmares.

I don't think I've ever made it past day 3 but I still love this game. Super weird fact: the box and manual of the European Sega Mega Drive version of Paperboy had an insanely hilariously bad Swedish translation, the worst offense without a doubt being accidentally translating The Grim Reaper to "The Vicious Rapist" I am 100% not joking!

@Mystemo

@@NESFriend it's pretty damn wild. It's just the Swedish translation that's screwed up though so you'd need someone who can read that to get how truely bizzare it is.

It's hard to describe how much I love it when someone puts old vintage commercials and TV clips into their videos... It would be cool to see this series make a return. I played this game called "Videokid: 80's Edition" that was basically a Paperboy homage, but it wasn't quite the same. (No control over speed. Only one level.) Great vid!

I always thought the breakdancer was someone on their back struggling to finally get those pants on for one last time.

The “walking guy” is a lawn jockey, a common site in many southern neighborhoods. It’s a little statue of a black stablehand that has its roots in racist nostalgia for the slavery era. You’ll often see them painted bright white in an effort to make the traditional ornament less racist. And most of them don’t suddenly come to life and attack the neighborhood paperboy.

Ah, you mean 2:34. I had to look that one up on Wikipedia and had no idea it was related to horse racing. I can see why it has negative connotations now (especially the "Jocko" design, ugh). Thanks for pointing that one out!

I don't really have much personal experience with these, but I do quite like the SNES version of Paperboy 2's Seinfeld slap bass

Paper Boy 2 was the one I came in on ( I believe the SNES version). This is an old favorite for me and a pretty good time despite its frustrations...of course this could be the nostalgia talking lol.

Best port of Paperboy 1? Genesis. The bassline of the in-game music is definitely a worthy listen. It also has every voice sample from the Arcade original. The SMS & GG ports are nice, even though the in-game music is taken from the Arcade title, Moon Patrol. As for Paperboy 2, the music in the Genesis version sounds like something out of Kid Chameleon given both games used the GEMS sound driver. You'll love and laugh at the Super NES version due to the music sounding A LOT like Seinfeld.

I’ve played the first game a million times, have often defended it to naysayers even, but never knew delivering papers earnestly to non-subscribers did anything to improve relations with them. Kinda just blew my damn mind, man. 😟

Can't pause during digitized sounds because too much of the CPU is in use to issue a pause command, presumably.

Too bad the digital age put an end to Paperboy's career. Not many people reading physical newspapers these days. Still, I'd like to see a modern reimagining of this game.

I always thought the break dancer guy was a guy struggling to put on his pants. I guess it's supposed to an old woman but I always thought the red person who comes chasing after you out of their house was a crazy person with a knife trying to stab you. Paperboy 2 feels like it should be a better game but I prefer 1. Next game is MIG 29?

I tried this game on NES, SNES, Genesis and GameBoy over the years. I always quit after playing it for 10 seconds. I never got the appeal of these. After your review I understand it more, but couldn't care less. This just isn't for me.
