"You've been detained for putting a picture from your son in the wall" "Your sentence is forced labor" "Your family will be sent back to their natal city" "Glory to Arstotzka"
The really bad jokes aside. My first time hearing this theme had me shell-shocked. It's a theme that perfectly conveys the sentence "Look at what you've gotten yourself into. Was it worth it?". Perfectly made song used in the perfect scenario.
wake me up inside Arstotzka Has no tolerance for delinquency You are under arrest until your debts are paid Your family will be returned to their village Glory to Arstotzka
Exactly, this theme will never stop sending chills down my spine everytime it's combined with one of the bad endings or an ending where you get arrested, I don't even know how it does it, but just seeing it... combined with the image of us getting arrested, it just gives me an immense feeling of sadness, dread and fear. I think it is due to the fact that they're letting you feel like you have power, after all, you can decide who can enter a country and who cannot, just by your own will, and all you'll ever get for it is a citation and if enough of those in one day they'll just remove pay from your salary, anybody would feel very responsible and powerful in this situation, but then, you get arrested due to your home country's tyrannical laws and ridiculous bureaucracy. In one moment you can decide who will enter a country and who will not (and those people who depend on your decision, are probably always hoping you'd let them pass through, and they are so determined to pass through that they even forge fake documents and hope you don't notice, which means a lot of people heavily may depend in you), and then the next one you are suddenly arrested and sentenced to forced labor or even get death penalty and executed which isn't uncommon at all (and you won't even be guaranteed that your family will be safe or not). So just suddenly seeing that in reality, you have no power and that the government can do whatever they want, and as far as just doing anything cruel to you just because they feel like it or feel like you disrespected them can give you an immense feeling of hopelessness, dread and just overral realizing the cruel and sad truth of your reality, your relative power is a grain of sand next to a mountain. Arstotzka truly is a dystopia where happiness rarely can be found, even when you try to follow their tyrannical laws as much as you can, some of the corrupt government workers can just force you even to go against their own government and if you do not follow, you can easily be arrested for it (Exactly what happened when your supervisor basically forced you to let through somebody who didn't qualify to enter Arstotzka, and if you didn't do it, he basically framed you just because he was mad at you), it just goes on even more just to show how relatively powerless you are really. I think the main message of this game, is just to show you how reality in some places really is or could be like, and to consider ourselves lucky that we don't live in a place like this. Papers please is such a masterpiece

MOA person -"If you see anything like this, you'll give it to me. Yes?" Inspector- "Yes" *Inspector gives things related to the order* MOA Person- "I think it is best you come with me." And that's how I got my first ending in Papers, Please. Because of honesty.
Oh my God. Same! I was trying to give him the papers when he first said to report any curious thing, but when he took them at the end and said "Interesting" I was excited that something good was going to happen, and that feeling lasted up until I heard the music and went, "Wait, what?" Then I was just upset. Ending 3/20 achieved. After I thought for a while, I realized that him asking for any "curious" thing was just a trap. He actually just wants to see whether or not you're linked with them. (I would expect that even more from a guy THAT sly with his words. "I think it is best if you come with me.")
lol, me too :DD remember the tale by la fontaine, in which the wolf says things to the lamb that aren't true and impossible, then he says: 'You know what? You actually did nothing, but I wanna eat you' - and he eats the lamb. fuck da police :P
You are under arrest for refusing to eat your Grandmother's Food. Mom, he will make sure of your punishment. The damage done to your family has been notorious. Glory to the Doe Family.
You are under arrest for failing a test. The penalty is study hall. Your parents will be questioned about their involvement. Glory to standardized testing.
It's what defeat sounds like but through the lens of the people that are actually arresting you in a way that it makes sense if you consider the atmosphere of this game. Just like what the guy said above. The fact that Lucas Pope managed to create that level of mood / atmosphere in the game with just plain text, simple graphics and sound design to improve and guide them is mesmerizing. Ngl, this is still my favorite text game of all time.
I think it kinda has that charm too but also a sinister undertone which I like to imagine reflects the game where Arstotzka marches on triumphantly, putting down all in their path. To me this song makes you feel unimportant, there is something greater that you can no longer provide a use for.
Kinda gives a “Where Are You Great General” vibe, just another morning in East Grestin, no one asks where the trucks go when they return to the prison empty
"Your entire family is dead" "The Ministry of Labor requires sufficent workers" "Workers are expected to support large healthy families" "Your position will be filled in by someone more appropriate." "Glory to Arstotzka."

Hey buddy i think there's something wrong with the name of the suspect who's being questioned, his name might've been mistyped in his papers and you might wanna edit it.
I love how nonchalant Arstotzka is about dishing out punishment to you. It makes you feel utterly small and worthless, and its perfect for the game's atmosphere.
Thats basically what happens when you are part of the security department of any country. No matter what they can promise You, excepting a few ones, the rest are basically only gears, with the only objective of spinning

You’ve been caught trying to earn a living wage The penalty is an even lower wage than before Your coworkers will be questioned about their involvement That fate of your salary is unknown Glory to Amazon
This is one of the best death themes, it perfectly represents just how disposable we are in a place like Arstotzka. If you fuck up, you’re replaced just like that and completely forgotten about, like the ending where your family dies. They don’t care that he just lost all his family members and just replace him quickly. Such a fucked up and amazing game!
A Day in Arstotzka: You wake up to loud sound of your alarm clock. You think to yourself about how outdated Arstotzkan appliances are. You eat your cereal, and notice tastes a bit odd today. You brush it off. As you get ready to go to work, you look into the mirror. You have a feeling today might be a bit different. You don't like that thought. You had been tought all of your life that monotonous perfection is the best achievement anyone can every hope to reach. You hope today will be the same as yesterday, and last week, and last month, and year, and decade. You want to be monotonously perfect, and perfectly monotonous. Glory to Arstotzka. You go to work. Everything is the same. You have a thought about maybe you were just paranoid, just a small uncertainty. Certainly not a large effect on your audit. The looming presence of the government does sometimes make you a bit uneasy, though. Today, as you were investigating suspicious citizens, you stumbled upon something that gave you a reaction that you didn't like. It was a woman, who had lied her way to get out of the country with her unborn child. She took every risk for her and child's sakes, and you feel as if you should do something, to be a force of justice. You forget that. Every investigator knows that it is protocol to assign anyone who has escaped the country unlawfully to the punishment of death. Glory to Arstotzka. As you are packing up your things, a strange figure approaches you, wearing a hood. He speaks of an organisation called the *ORDER OF EZIC STAR*. He asks you to join in "liberating the nation". You decline and report the incident to your supervisor. He gives you an odd look. You wonder in fear if this will effect your audit. You walk home, ignoring everything the unusual man said. Glory to Arstotzka. You walk home at sundown, in half darkness, unable to see very well. You've been walking this same route for a decade by this point though, so it is not a problem. As you take a deep breath, you cough, because a nearby Biological Research Center has just emitted a cloud of black smoke, almost tinted green. It becomes darker. You begin to hear a second pair of footsteps. You know you are not alone. You only feel the bat on your head by the time you are knocked out. Only the fastest and most trustworthy Arstotzkans are given the job of *Information Security Agent*. Glory to Arstotzka. You wake up in a dark room. A man discusses with you about your "involvement" with the *ORDER OF EZIC STAR*, even though you only met a strange man. He states finally: "The punishment for treason of this order is to be a subject in branch 6A of the *Biological Research Center*. You are about to ask what the punishment even entails, but you are cut off by a whack to the head. You know not of the fate that is about to end your life. Glory to Arstotzka. You wake up again. You are dizzy. You open your eyes. What you saw made so disgusted and frightened that you wish you never had eyes in the first place. When you opened your eyes, you were met by a large box made of glass, with organs and veins and bones and everything in it. You then look down at yourself. A small cable hooked into your stomach. You realize those are your organs, outside of your body, but still functioning. You piece together the puzzle. As you scream in terror, a few men take some notes and then wheel you off outside into a dump and leave you there. It is sunrise. Because of the sun, your body slowly melts, until it is only a cloud of black smoke, maybe with a tint of green. The last thing you see is thousands of others in the exact same situation as yours, but already gone, only a bit of residue left. Nobody notices you're missing. Everyone keeps going on, being monotonously perfect, and perfectly monotonous. The balance of justice has been restored. Glory to Arstotzka.

It’s just the funniest to me. Like when that opening beat goes up and that officer’s on screen, I can just imagine it going like Officer: [sighs, then he clicks his tongue] Welp, you fucked up. Inspector: I fucked up... Arstotskans: He fucked up. Foreigners: They fucked up. M. O. A.: We fucked up.

You listen to the ensuing battle with your family in your apartment as the sun sets. Arstotzka is in ruins. The government has collapsed. The Civil War has undone all the effort made to rebuild Grestin after the war with Kolechia. Most have evacuated into the countryside. Others, such as you and your family, chose, or were forced to remain. Jorji left as well. He promised to send help, but he sounded doubtful. His smile was sad. That was a week ago. The Civil War spread all across the country. Kolechia and Obristan had closed their borders. Soldiers will shoot anyone who tries to approach them. You can see them from your window. The Kolechian Border Guard, now in proper soldier uniforms, aiming their rifles, and the guns of their tanks, at your side. They're stoic, though, some seem to be sneering at the chaos. Some look sad. Some, worried. One late night, you hear heavy footsteps. They break into your appartment. Drag you and your family away. They're wearing uniforms, but in the wrong way. And the crest on their caps has been defaced, replaced with the old one Arstotzka used before the Revolution. Some of them recognize you. You recognize some of them as well. You're in camp, set up by the dissidents. They will most deffinitely kill you. They've already killed your wife, your uncle, your mother-in-law, and your child. They laughed at your tears, your sobs. You're sitting in windowless cell, made out of a coal hole. It's been a month. The battles never stop. You can always hear gunfire, bombs exploding, tank threads rattling, jets flying by, women and children screaming and crying. You hear paper shuffling. You light the candle, the only thing you were given, with your lighter, the only thing you were allowed to keep. You read letter by the light. Inspector! You have contributed greatly to our cause. EZIC is grateful. Unfortunately, we lost control of situation. This civil war is not our work. Internal cells have woken up to the sound of liberation, and decided to seize this opportunity to take control. We've lost too many men. This faction of EZIC is over. Remaining agents are retreating. We have failed our cause, we have failed you. You have our deepest condolances for your family. You sit back, and rest your head against the wall. You hold letter into the flame. As it burns up, you see the faces of your lost loved ones. Your wife. Your son. Your uncle. Your mother-in-law. Friends, colleagues, rivals. Even Jorji shows up for a friendly smile. Your body is unwashed, severely malnourished, and weak. You watch candle burn down. Your country is dying around you. There will be nothing left. As light finally goes out, you close your eyes, and whisper into the cold air: ...Glory to Arstotzka!
Ending 21/20: The day was cut short by Kolechian and Imporian soldiers attacking the checkpoint. The checkpoint will be closed permanently. You will be transferred to the Military. Your Family, and every other family will be evacuated out of Gretsin and will be safely relocated. Glory to Arstotzka. You have received a letter: War has given a distraction so that Ezic can rise against the dictator. We will do the work from here on. Do not fight us if you are called to stop our rebellion. Glory to the Order of the Ezic Star.
