Join us on an Ontario nature documentary northeast of Sudbury, Ontario, where my friend and I explore Sudbury's secret oasis Paradise Lagoon. Nestled beside a magnificent stand of North America’s oldest Red & White Pines, this hidden gem offers more than just scenic beauty. Our trek begins with uncertainty as we veer off the Trans-Canada Highway onto back-roads, questioning if our four-wheel drive can conquer the challenging terrain.
The hike starts off easy atop the hard-packed snow, but soon reveals its treacherous side with hidden puddles lurking beneath. Despite a few slips and an unexpected face plant, we press on, driven by the allure of Wolf Lake’s nearby old-growth forest. This ancient woodland, a remnant of a once vast expanse stretching from the Maritimes to the Great Lakes, now clings to existence with only 1.2% remaining, with Wolf Lake at its heart.
As we approach, even Mickey, our usually eager companion, is taken aback by the stunning vistas of turquoise waters, pink granite, and white quartzite hills-earning this place the nickname ‘Killarney of the North.’ The waterfalls, fed by Wolf Lake, cascade amidst trees that have stood for over three centuries, predating even the formation of Upper Canada.
But this pristine wilderness faces threats from mineral exploration and mining, putting the irreplaceable old-growth trees at risk. It’s a sobering thought that such ancient giants could be lost, which is why the Save Wolf Lake coalition, alongside the Wahnapitae First Nation, is fighting to protect this invaluable natural heritage. Dive into our adventure and witness the beauty and fragility of this extraordinary ecosystem.

What a truly beautiful waterfall! That is a real shame that with only 1.2% of the old growth left that it would not already be protected. Looked like Mickey had a blast running around. Glad no one was hurt with all the slipping.

Beautiful forest and flowing water! You found a little piece of heaven! I hope the efforts to preserve Wolf Lake are successful- you can’t grow back the old growth forest and ecosystem once it’s cut down 🥲🥲. Sorry to hear it was so slippery, sounds like you recovered well from your wipeout 👌 Mickey seemed to love being out! Hope your friend got some amazing photos. 😄👍👍 Cheers, Jen 🌲🌲🌲🌲💚💚

Indeed, if a soft spot can be found, I am the one to certainly find it too! lol Gorgeous falls on one beauty of a day!! Otis would be looking at me and wondering why water, but is happy when I bring out his banana reward! It is strange to think that the old growth is still being allowed to be harvested...thought we were all past that stage! Wonderful day of exploring!!

Yes, I couldn't believe how well hidden those puddles were under the trail. They were deep too! I'm informed that the foresters can't touch those trees anymore but the mining claim owners can do what they want to them if they're in the way of reaching the ore. 😨I hope those lands get protected once and for all. Thanks for dropping by. Daryl & Mick

Luckily I didn't get hurt despite falling through the snow into deep puddles...twice. The puddles under the snow were invisible and when I stepped on the snow above them the snow would collapse and I'd fall over. Luckily the soft snow was also soft enough for a pain-free landing. Lol. Thanks for the feedback about Mickey running in slow-mo. I debated about using that shot or not. I hope all is well and thanks for visiting.

Those puddles were virtually impossible to see in places, and when the snow collapsed under my feet (twice) I had no chance! Luckily the snow was just as soft to land on. LOL. Apparently the trees are protected from forestry but mining claim owners can do what they want to them, scary. Thanks for visiting. - Daryl

Hi. Yes, there are wolves and black bears throughout our northern Ontario forests but thankfully I rarely if ever encounter them. The lake gets its name because apparently it is shaped like the head of a wolf when looking at it from up high - but personally I don't see it. Thanks for watching!

Hi. I watch her content from time to time but must have missed that episode, I'll check it out. I've driven it in both winter and summer and honestly the winter is probably the least risky to the vehicle. Though the melting snow created some deep and narrow trenches through the snow across the road that required extra attention when driving. The summer road has a lot of ruts, potholes, and rocks but you'd be okay in your truck. Thanks for visiting.

I'm addicted to your content, i've always wanted to start a channel like this, but other than a semi-regular Instagram and sporadic TikTok uploads I haven't found the motivation to start long-form videos yet. that being said i have a question. was it a far hike into the lagoon? I'm planning on taking my kids to the area on their next PD Day in June and from what I've heard it's fairly easy to get to and not too far off Kukagami road.
@flynorthproductions
@flynorthproductions 3 месяца назад
😊 Thank you! I hope you do start a RU-vid channel, I would watch! I've just subscribed to your Instagram channel, it looks great. The trail is actually off of Bushy Bay Road, which is off of Matagamasi Lake Road, which is off Kukagami Road. The hike from where you would park takes about 30 minutes or so, probably less. The road can be rough but a small SUV or larger vehicle should have no problem. If you would like more detailed directions, please send me an email at flynorthproductions@gmail.com and I'll send you a map. Thanks for watching and I'm really glad you're enjoying the content.
