Join us on an Ontario nature documentary northeast of Sudbury, Ontario, where my friend and I explore Sudbury's secret oasis Paradise Lagoon. Nestled beside a magnificent stand of North America’s oldest Red & White Pines, this hidden gem offers more than just scenic beauty. Our trek begins with uncertainty as we veer off the Trans-Canada Highway onto back-roads, questioning if our four-wheel drive can conquer the challenging terrain.
The hike starts off easy atop the hard-packed snow, but soon reveals its treacherous side with hidden puddles lurking beneath. Despite a few slips and an unexpected face plant, we press on, driven by the allure of Wolf Lake’s nearby old-growth forest. This ancient woodland, a remnant of a once vast expanse stretching from the Maritimes to the Great Lakes, now clings to existence with only 1.2% remaining, with Wolf Lake at its heart.
As we approach, even Mickey, our usually eager companion, is taken aback by the stunning vistas of turquoise waters, pink granite, and white quartzite hills-earning this place the nickname ‘Killarney of the North.’ The waterfalls, fed by Wolf Lake, cascade amidst trees that have stood for over three centuries, predating even the formation of Upper Canada.
But this pristine wilderness faces threats from mineral exploration and mining, putting the irreplaceable old-growth trees at risk. It’s a sobering thought that such ancient giants could be lost, which is why the Save Wolf Lake coalition, alongside the Wahnapitae First Nation, is fighting to protect this invaluable natural heritage. Dive into our adventure and witness the beauty and fragility of this extraordinary ecosystem.
