I learned paragliding on my own. It was really difficult and dangerous way but i survived it and now i can show you that it is possible.
Please learn with instructor and in save conditions. Paragliding is dangerous and in same time beautiful sport.

Though I agree with taking classes, I always wonder "who taught the first guy?" I did teach myself Paramotoring, Windsurfing & a few other sports. Common sense mainly.

So basically ... you can do the following: Go to a 1-2 day class so they show you the basics of ground handling PROPERLY -> Ground handling, ground handling, and ground handling, just follow the basics until you feel comfortable, then go to another 1-2 day class so they can let you know if you are ready for a real flight (not a leap from a hill or something like that) and correct any mistakes if there are any. The thing is that getting comfortable with ground handling .... you have to figure it out and get used to it, apart from someone showing you the basics everything else is up to you (regarding ground handling). What do you think about that?

Julian Fisk, there are a lot of theoretical information like aerodynamics, meteorology, emergency and etc. you need to learn in order to make paragliding safe. It is easy to hurt yourself without instructor. Do not do it alone.

I'm glad I can learn from your experiences. It's great seeing your advancement from these early days to the recent Tenerife trip! I'm just looking to buy my first A wing and take P1/P2 classes here in Boulder, CO usa. Can't wait to get in the air, and I really appreciate all your great learning videos. @@PeterHoldy very! Still, it seems you come an incredibly long way and are one of the most proficient pilots I’ve seen in hundreds of hours of research. I myself am admittedly an aspiring self teaching paraglider pilot...I know people say “absolutely don’t do this”, but I assure you I’m not around anyone else or endangering anyone but myself hehe. The issue is that where I live in the U.S., there aren’t any schools for hours around, and even if I were to drive hours....the prices here for (let’s face it an extremely basic 2-7 day course) are about $2500 to $3000 usd......it’s crazy. Couple that with the fact that you don’t need a certification in the U.S......and I decided to go the dangerous route haha. I’ve put in about 200+ hours of “classroom time” studying books, videos, forums, etc. and I spent about 15 hours with a friends equipment just familiarizing myself with it....now I’m buying my own equipment and finding a field for some ground handling! The one advantage I have is that I’ve been fascinated with aviation and flown RC planes/choppers since I was a child....so I have a good understanding of meteorology already....and I’m versed in other extreme sports (downhill mountain biking, motocross, wake/snowboarding, bmx biking on a semi pro level, ride motorcycles, and have a coast guard certification for marine vessel navigation.) I know none of that translates to paragliding, but my point is just that I’ve spent years doing dangerous things, and have a healthy respect for them and a mentality to learn slow, and do things properly. It bothers me when para pilots in the U.S. yell at people and treat them like trash for being self taught, when in my opinion, doing hundreds of hours of your own research with the right mentality, and hours of ground handling is far better than doing 10 hours in a class where they’re focused on other people and then they tell you “you’re a pilot now!” Anyway, with all that said, I would just like to personally thank you. Your visual representation and explanations in your ground handling videos especially, REALLY helped me to have an “in action” understanding of the lines and risers and using them with the right finesse. Much appreciated.

Hi Peter, I initially joined the paramotor training last year - the instructor was so bad that I did not want to continue with him even though I paid the full amount for the training. I was afraid I might end up in a bad accident and brake some bones or neck !!! So started to train on my own for the ground handling - the best way is to learn yourself as best as possible with in the safe limits. I must confess without your video tips I would not have done it. Also Mike Kung's and Flybubble's Graham Horton helped me a lot with their videos. Now, I have almost mastered my ground handling after trying all the things you mentioned in our videos. Especially the last one with 6 different tips. I have not taken to the air yet - that I will be doing with a proper instructor in a week or so in brighten. Thank you for your videos. Much appreciated. Regards, ken

That first blue wing of yours, was that an Airwave Sport? Like, from 2001? What year was that first "takeoff" run? Yup, I got a similar one for free in 2018 to do some thrashing around on flat ground. It was excellent (and free) experience to handle the monster in switchy winds. Yes, eventually I knew enough to be dangerous to myself and took classes. . . .

Great video! I am watching these videos thinking about getting into paramotoring myself. Why don't you like the motor as much as just the wing itself? Is it more relaxing without all the noise and extra weight?
@PeterHoldy
@PeterHoldy 5 лет назад
If you are from flat lands no hills around you then Paramotor is great. But if you have places to free fly then is the most amazing feeling be free. No engine, noise, weight and vibration! You are not restricted on fuel endurance! Is it just about your skills to stay up for many hours up to 9h if you are good. If you landed long way from home then is it easy just take a bus, taxi or any ride. With Paramotor you will be restricted. I love free flying as i learning every day about my skills. Paramotor is same, power on , power off 🤣😉

Mas vzdusne priestory a tie podliehaju prisnin pravidlam. Urcite si nastujuj letecke pravo , knihu 👍 drzim palce a daj vediet ako ti to pojde 🙏

I have seen few moments of really luck in this video where you could be really injuried or something worse, not only a broken arm or leg. @PeterHoldy

It take about 3-4 months with every day playing with wing ! Normal people can take up to 1-2 years. Everything is about your passion and mind state 👍

What a video! It's so cool that you have all your progress recorded! Next year I'm going to start my paragliding journey and this video got me thinking about investing in a go pro. :) I'm wondering how long have you been paragliding now?

If you do have a go at paragliding I recommend doing a EP with flyspain where you'll do groundhandling small hops and small flights within a week!

@PeterHoldy
@PeterHoldy 5 лет назад
Hello ;) Thank you for watching. If you start your trainig here in UK and if weather will be on your side, it will take around 2-3weeks if you will be bloody good you can achievie it in lest then 2weeks. I learn my flying skils in less then 7 mounts but you need to be always out if is flyable and make most of your flying days. It is about how good you are in your life. If you learn quickly any sports so you will be good. If you are lazy and you will fly just few times as relax, it will take a long time. I know some pilots which flying over 25years and they are rubbish;) and some pilots fly just 2years and they are Sky Gods ;)Hope it make sense :D See you soon in the sky! Take care ;)

Where is your home ? You should be able to buy staff online and get send to your country , but you should check regulation of flying in your country and local sites if there are any Airspace you can stay away from. You need, glider, harness, helmet and rescue parachute. That is all you need 👍
