This Is Why is the sixth studio album by American rock band Paramore, released on February 10, 2023, through Atlantic Records. It is the band's first album in nearly six years, following After Laughter (2017), as well as their first album to feature the same line-up as its predecessor.[1] Three singles preceded the album: "This Is Why", "The News", and "C'est Comme Ça".
Logan Gourlay of Rock Sound called it a "jittery post-punk record" and noted Foals, Bloc Party and Talking Heads influences.[15] Meredith Jenks and Christine Werthman of Billboard have described the album as "a tight, post-punk juggernaut that zeroes in on pandemic-fueled anxieties".[1] Similarly, Arielle Gordon from Pitchfork characterized the album as "jittery, crackling post-punk."[16] Andrew Sacher at BrooklynVegan claimed the album has "twitchy" dance-punk "all over [it]."[17] According to Alexis Petridis of The Guardian, "[the album] stirs 00s alt-rock into the mix: the band have mentioned Bloc Party and Foals as influences."[18] Ims Taylor of Clash stated that "Paramore opt for simple, striking, and forceful on ‘This Is Why’, keeping in that New Wave tradition of punchy phrases iterated and reiterated, through vivid guitar countermelodies, offbeat punctuation and pointed lyrical looping of lyrics that go beyond verse chorus verse chorus, searing each song’s character into your mind indelibly."[19] The Sydney Morning Herald noted that "the album’s last three tracks swirl around a dream-pop axis."[20] According to Chris Thiessen of Under the Radar, "The back half of the album feels tonally different from the front, more personal and relational and coming closer to their pop-punk roots."[21] Maximo David by Boolin Tunes describe the album as, This Is Why both stylistically and lyrically. Containing a chorus most reminiscent of something found on 2009's Brand New Eyes, with a more math rock-oriented instrumental, it's a real treat. To be clear, any notion that This Is Why is Paramore “returning to their roots”, or whatever a number of pundits may have purported over the years is almost unequivocally false."[22]

I liked this album and found it odd people were feeling lukewarm on it. I think it could potentially grow into a great record for me, but rn it’s pretty good. Right now my greatness bar is VV’s Neon Noir, and This Is Why doesn’t quite get there for me.

Fun fact: Look at one of the Assistant Engineers on this album: Kyle McAulay. You might ask yourself why that name sounds familiar. He is the guitar player and producer for Spanish Love Songs. He's got assistant engineer credits for this Paramore album, Lamb of God stuff, Jonathan Davis, Soulfly, Motorhead, even a mixing assistant credit for Jason Derulo, lol. And Trevor Deitrich the bassist is no slouch either, with assistant engineering credits for Palisades, Mayday Parade, Escape the Fate, and others. I talked to Kyle after their Cleveland show and he said "Yeah, they (Paramore) barely even had to move any of my microphones I set up for recording", lol. That's why their albums sound so great, Kyle's experience in the field. And Dylan has experience in the film field, so that's why they have such great videos.

I respectfully disagree with that take. Mediocre is closer to half of mainstream pop today, which is what makes and album like this so refreshing. It’s definitely up there with some of their best work. And it didn’t have to be Riot part 2 to get there.

The issue I think with the mix is dynamic range. The guy who mixed it has a pretty interesting catalog of stuff. Definitely made for radio stuff which if you know anything about the loudness wars, you know what that means. Dynamics are just GONE. I noticed even though its not fatiguing its a LOUD record so when you need that extra punch in a chorus it isn't there theres no headroom for it to breathe. I am sure that the dynamic range will be much better on a vinyl copy than a streaming version but I am curious to see the DR rating this has.
@paisleepunk
@paisleepunk 5 месяцев назад
ha ha, this actually has a dr rating of 8! for context, paramore mostly averages out at, like, a dr6, and while dr8 isn't "ideal", it sure beats the everloving SHIT out of some of their inspirations (ahem, _bloc party_ and the dr5s and 6s)

Huge agree, this record is phenomenal imo. I'm honestly a little baffled by some of the reviews calling it a slower album or more lyrically lightweight because I didn't hear that at all - the dance-punk grooves are tight as a drum, and this might be the most lyrically devastating I've ever heard Paramore be.
@sammyauroraloves

Like I guess it's not as poppy as some of their previous albums, there's a bit more seething anger and quietly devastating moments, but this absolutely did not sound like a soft or sleepy album to me.

Pretty decent album overall and I enjoyed it. Part of me is slightly underwhelmed with it though, mainly due to the 6 year long wait. I also think some of the ideas they had could've been executed a bit better like C'est Comme Ça. I get what they were going with that track, but the chorus kinda irritates me. Really feel this album could've used some stronger and more memorable hooks as well. Hopefully, it'll grow on me with repeated listens.

Considering they're touring with Bloc Party, I'm not surprised this album's post punk-y as hell. As for me, I liked the album overall... though the last three songs kinda lost me a bit. When the whole album has such muted production and the textures are so smooth, ending the album on a string of ballads kinda made me doze off a little. I certainly don't think it's better than _After Laughter_ or _Brand New Eyes_ . That said, I *do* think this album could grow on me, just like the title track did.

Personally I really like this album. I am only slightly disappointed bc I don't think the songs are as strong as the ones on their last few records. For me, everything from Brand New Eyes to After Laughter has been a 10/10 for me, and for me this albums maybe more like an 8, which initially disappointed me but hey, an 8/10 is still a dang solid record!

Honestly this album hasn't done anything for me, really. Nothing on here is awful, the instrumentation is genuinely pretty great, as are Hayley's vocals as expecting but for a band as consistent as Paramore, I just don't see myself returning to this album as much as I do the rest of their albums. The title track is really the only song on here that seems really replayable for me. This album doesn't seem like a Paramore album, and I don't mean that in a "this album is different, boo!" kind of way. I mean AL was a complete departure from their other albums and every album they've had has been somewhat of a departure from the prior in some way. This album is similar but there's just something missing here for me. I've only given it 3 full listens so maybe I'll get it later on but this does sit at the bottom of their discography for me Also C'est Comme Ca is just pronounced "Say come sah"

I like this record, I like the direction and overall sound. The album does feel front loaded to me and it does feel a bit subdued. For me with a Paramore record, if its better than Riot it’s pretty good. I’m not sure if it is because the post Riot albums are their best work and Riot is good. Perhaps for me I was way to hyped for this album after hearing The News like 20 times and loving it, but for what the album is, it’s pretty good. Also Hayley said Bloc Party was one of the main inspirations for this album, so there’s that.

In my opinion this is a solid and slightly good album it was my most highly anticipated album but when I listen to the album I wasn’t very disappointing I was like curious 🤨 When I mean Curious I mean like There are some songs that we kind of heard before I’ll explain why this is kind of the Weakest album from them And I’ll explain why I think we got seven great songs Like the news Running out of time C’est Comme CA You first figure 8 Crave and Thick Skull I think my Sort of of my least favorite songs are The tile track Big man little Dignity and Lair Those songs are definitely not bad at all There is no bad songs on this album and this is nowhere near a bad album it’s a solid good album but The reason why I said this is the weakest album is because it’s solid it’s gonna it’s on way but has its weakest moments where Hayley Williams Doesn’t sound like her as Paramore like there earlier works It sounds more like her solo work is like Am I listening to Paramore or Hayley Williams solo work Because free songs that are solid sounds exactly like I’ve heard before from her solo work I’m not trying to complain about her voice is I like Hayley wine and vocals but this is not the style as the Paramore band in my personal opinion It does not sound awful at all definitely not it just sounds like I’ve heard it before And I don’t mind post punk style to this out nothing to complain about post punk I’m in for the genre it’s just her vocal sounds like her own solo work So that’s why I said this is the weakest album they have Release I was so excited for this album and did it make me happy yes And somewhere between meaning that I’m curious They haven’t really make a great album since they’re self-titled album back in 2013 Even if I had experimental to it I can appreciate what they did I think the best album by far was brand new eyes I think that is easily Their best album to date But this album is still solid and good this is an album I’ll come back to but not like every day or Or all the time I might get this on CD just because I like Paramore But this is nowhere near their best album It’s still good it’s just has some weird moments With Williams Vocals But I think it’s solid and good So I’ll give this album a solid 8 out of 10 Hopefully the next album they can work on a little bit more in my personal opinion but they didn’t did a terrible job they did a pretty solid and good job.
