This was an interesting flight, a new and unfamiliar flying field prompted some mistakes to be made:
POST-ANALYSIS:
- The field was quite frankly horrible, the grass was over-grown, the ground was bumpy with hidden dips and it was covered in spiky plants which caused the wing and lines to catch - not ideal at all.
- On take-off, I wasn't applying sufficient brake and hence I didn't quite get airborne as quickly as I was used to, therefore I ended up on my knees a few times. I was also carrying 14 ltrs of fuel which was weight that I wasn't used to.
- We didn't have a wind-sock up, this field was experiencing rapidly changeable wind directions, it was stupid of us not to have established a wind-sock before any of us flew.
- I accidentally sat down too early, the weight increase on the wing consequently meant that I didn't have sufficient altitude to take flight and hence ended up back on the floor.
- On landing, I flared far too late and consequently ended up on my knees - it had the makings of a beautiful landing, but I screwed it up!
Lessons learnt, onwards and upwards!
