Watch this video as I coach Renee (@rtt7374) through strategizing vocabulary targets. NOTE: First question I ask--- "what is being used spontaneously?" AND "Are the words being generalized to different activities/communication partners?" Getting this baseline is CRUCIAL to assessing a child's vocabulary so that we can expand a child's language organically. When we do this from a foundation of what children are already doing on their own, we're more likely to have success. NOTICE: I ask Renee what she thinks before I tell her what I think--- #reflectivecoaching! Also--- selecting two words/phrases during an activity can streamline your approach. Have you tried working this type of vocabulary strategy with your clients? Leave a comment below--- I'd love to hear from you!

Rachel, thank you for all of these wonderful teaching videos. I have just started to implement the Beginner 1 board with a non-verbal student that came to our preschool program. The staff is a big discouraged because the board seems cumbersome as this child is very active. Some avoidance of the board has been noted as well. I've encouraged them to continue and to post the board in several places around the room (kitchen area, reading nook, water table, etc.) so they don't have to carry it around with him. What else would you recommend?

Hi Valeri--- Sometimes the board can feel overwhelming to communication partners at first. One idea is to print out core words and hang them in relevant places in the classroom (e.g. put the words "ON/OFF" next to the sink to model as you turn the water on/off). I have a resource called "Core Word Choices: that would be perfect for this. Another idea for this specific student is to make the vocabulary more salient by having photographs of nouns of his favorite things in the classroom. You know how much I love core words, but the key here is getting this student used to communicating efficiently and effectively, and sometimes core words take a little extra time for students to learn. Having some salient and motivating fringe vocabulary while teaching the staff to model core words seems like a great approach for this student! Hope this helps :)

Rachel, how many core words do you put on board at once when beginning a communication board?

it depends on the child! This is a trial and error type of process... I have a communication board bundle for sale on my website and this shows the words I start with in a step-by-step process (there are 5 different boards with a progression of more and more words). www.rachelmadel.com/shop/communication-board-bundle
