This is one of my fave talks about raising teens. I give my own daughter privacy and trust her more to find her way through. Our relationship is naturally closer because of it. She comes to me when she needs me, but she knows I know she’s got this thing called life. Thank you so very much for sharing this with us. Mom Heather & Daughter Jess, Glen Mills, PA

The daughter's comments about being tasked with things from thier parents during simple conversation is awesome. FYI; this happens in the real world with your boss.

Absolutely, the convo between the two mirrors what has been happening with my daughter. It feels good to know I am not alone, and there is always something I can do differently than I have done in the past and get different results.

I’m guilty of this. My teen feels like anything can turn into a long discussion.

Personally, I feel the modern teen could easily manage more respect, humility, gratitude, and less entitlement towards parents. This can be done even as the parent respects personal boundaries while continuing to correct, discipline, and make expectations for behavior and chores well known. Appropriate consequences for non-compliance should eliminate emotional pleas, lectures, etc... 🙏💕🙏💕🙏

Don't you think that sense of entitlement describes parents the most?

@@MartinTheCoach😅 It certainly did in my generation. But, the modern teen is quite different, from my experience. Of course, it depends on the family.

@@kimberlymccracken747 I see...personally, i believe there is need for the teenagers of this age and their parents to have a dynamic relationship. Rigidity especially on the side of parents would backfire big time.

@@MartinTheCoach I agree, but I didn't see rigidity in the parent. I did see it in the teen - as well as defiance. Maybe there's a reason her Mom is always asking about these things 🤔 In my opinion, humility, civility, and respect are lost in space 🌌🚀😅 Often, on both sides of the equation. I think the Mom modeled humility, a willingness to see the daughter's perspective and a sense of detachment and regard. Of course, it's impossible to know what goes on behind closed doors. The daughter may have been pissed and closed off and unwilling to see her Mom's perspective for a reason. Who knows 🤔 When I was helping raise teens in the 90s I came across an excellent book entitled "Get Out of My Life! But, First, Will You Take Me and Cheryl To The Mall?" Lol 😆 Great perspective on the modern teen at the time. I'm sure much has changed, but probably a lot has remained the same. Seems the pendulum can swing so wildly. My parents "parented" like the crazed, HIGHLY dysfunctional characters in MadMen 😲🥹🕶️ At 59 I'm STILL reeling and healing 🙏

@@kimberlymccracken747 wow i like the way you emphasizing on the dual sense of responsibility, and yes i agree there is so much good that old parents did even with all the dysfunctionalities characterizing their no nonsense ,,and the so called "tough love"...there is need to carry on with the good from the past while dropping the bad in the present parenting models.
