This was easily one of the more darker deleted scenes for Avatar 2, showing how anger and emotion took over Neytiri. Would you have wanted this to stay on the original cut of the movie?
I purchased the digital version of Avatar The Way of Water Collector's Edition on the Microsoft Store.
Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water follows the journey of Jake Sully and Neytiri's newfound family. Despite their best efforts to keep their family together, a familiar threat resurfaces and forces Jake, Neytiri, and their four children to flee to the land of the Metkayina clan.
Avatar: The Way of Water's plot will be a fully-encapsulated, standalone narrative, as will the other sequels, but will also be part of a meta-narrative that extends across Avatar: The Way of Water, Avatar 3, 4 and 5.

Definitely would of wanted this in main movie, it shows the darker side of Na'vi too, but also even her own kids and Jake was scares and worried. It would of added a lot more to the character and even Quaritch, shifting the dynamic of the entire family group, would have also made Spider saving Quaritch much more compelling as he showed a lot of worry and care still for his kid. Overall a shame it wasn't added. Also thanks for sharing, I always love seeing deleted scenes because they can add context or show where it could of gone 😊

I keep seeing people complain about Neytiri with lines like "she has been reduced to a screaming psychopath" yeah if I just witnessed my son get murdered by the people responsible for my PTSD I'd respond quite violently too. exactly. These are the people who murdered her sister, colonised and destroyed her home killing her father in the process, have hunted her and her family down, forcing them to flee and leave behind the rest of their clan, and have now killed her firstborn child. She's watched them annihilate everything she holds dear. I'm gonna cheer for the Navi clans we'll see in the sequels who are downright HOSTILE towards the colonisers.

Let seeee she lost her sister to the sky people, saw her home burn and her father die, was betrayed by someone she loved, forced to leave her home to protect her family, and her oldest son died in her arms so no not a screaming psycho just a woman who lost everything and suffered too much
@mechiktaj

My heart broke for Neytiri. I can't understand the argument that she went too far here. She lost SO much at the hands of the RDA - her father, her sister, her first born son, her Ikran, her home tree and the other sacred locations, even came close to losing Jake himself! She is 100% justified in her rage and hatred of the humans.
@blackspark5218
@blackspark5218 9 месяцев назад
Revenge always goes to far the moment innocent bystanders get dragged into it. Spider has done nothing to Neytiri, his only fault is that he was born a human and just so happened to be sired by the individual that caused most of her grief. Her actions are understanable given everything Neytiri went through, but ultimately still evil.

@@blackspark5218 I agree that Spider would not have deserved to die at the hands of Neytiri. Whether out of revenge ("A son for a son"), or just blind rage, she would have killed someone who the rest of her family loved dearly. But she still maintains the right to her feelings and emotions in this scene. I can see her pain and suffering inside, underneath all of her external rage. The source of her suffering is the RDA. They have, and are continuing to ravage Pandora. Anger is the emotion of change; and here, I see her using it to effect the change needed to rid Pandora of her enemies. Looking ahead, I don't think this is the last time we'll see her anger directed at Spider. Definitely not once she finds out he saved Quaritch's life.

Jake and Quaritch, still mortal enemies, but lowkey coming together on the topic of Spider safety. Jake and Kiri are just great in this scene. The way Jake handles and de-escalates a literal hostage situation involving his wife, is amazing. Also, how poignant is it that she grabbed him to save Kiri and then she just hisses at her daughter like that. The acting between Jake and Neytiri is so good, holy crap. I wonder how the scene with them backing into the water and eventually Jake vs Quaritch would have gone with the full version, but it makes complete sense why Spider would save Quartitch given what just happened. It's hard to hold Neytiri fully to blame for her actions given that she just lost her son, but it's also not possible to blame Spider for his understandable fear and uncertainty. Very much drives home that sometimes there are no winners, there is no cut and dry good and bad, just victims of pain creating more victims, and both being completely understandable and sympathetic.

@jadonpollard5537

After watching this scene I now have nothing but sympathy for spider. It makes so much more sense as to why he would save that monster. If I had been seconds away from getting my throat slit after reuniting with my foster family by my foster mother, and the person in front of me goes out of his or her way to save my life, I would repay that debt by doing the same. I understand that she had ptsd through loosing Neteyam in fact all the sullies were, but you also have to take into account that the whole world was against spider from the moment he drew breath on Pandora. He was on his own from day 1. He was seen as a stray cat to a human in a Navi body, he was physiologically broken from Netyiri’s hatred of him, and was constantly blamed for every decision that Lo’ak or kiri made when they went on their little excursions in the forest. He was left behind by the Sully’s and left in the hands of the demon Quaritch. He was tortured by the humans and gave up nothing, he was forced to watch his father burn down villages and harm innocent metkayina men, woman, and children, and watch Neteyam die because of a decision that again Lo’ak made which was saving him which means that he is indirectly responsible for neteyams death. Something that a lot of people don’t realize is that Spider never asked to be rescued. He didn’t know they were even coming to save him. So when Netyiri turns all that rage and hatred towards Spider with a knife to his throat, and stops because kiri was released, I was like “huh” maybe Spider saved quaritch because he wanted to belong which is part of it. I was mad but I understood why he did what he did. BUT AFTER WATCHING THIS SCENE I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND WHY HE DID WHAT HE DID. The kid in that moment wasn’t wondering “oh I’m going to replace Neteyam as their son and finally be accepted as one of them” he’s probably thinking something along the lines of “After everything I did for these people, in spit of everything I’ve done to make up for my fathers crimes, I’ll always be seen as a demon, they’ll always look at me with pity, and the person who I’ve tried to connect with the most in spite of her hatred towards me has just tried to end my very existence. And the person who killed their son just saved my life. I don’t know what to do here!” “THAT’S HIS THOUGHT PROCESS THROUGHOUT THE FINAL CHUNK OF THE MOVIE. HE’S A SCARED KID TRYING TO BELONG. I understand what Netyri is going through and she has every right to skin Quaritch for what he did, but not Spider. Spider did breathe and be of service to the na’vi. I can’t wait to see their conflict in the next avatar movie!

I strongly suggest watching Neytiri's first scene from the first movie to contrast with this scene. It's quite profound. In "Jake Meets Neytiri" she's angry with Jake for causing the death of a dog, very spiritually thanking Eywa for its life, apologizing, and smacking Jake for being so stupid as to get a precious life killed. Now she's willing to kill an innocent, a child, in cold blood, not to save a life but to cause pain. No wonder Jake is so surprised. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TgT8b62FJRI.html

This scene makes Spider saving Quaritch at the end a little more understandable - when I watched the film I was like damn, he is really gunna save that MF? But with this extra info, Spider seeing with his own eyes that his adopted mother figure was willing to sacrifice him just to cause pain, despite practically raising him all these years. Contrast that to his biological father - who clearly seems to genuinely care about him, despite being the enemy. Now, his actions in saving his father make a bit more sense, rather than being chalked up to Quaritch's plot armour for future films and drama for the sake of drama.

Yeah. This scene shouldn’t been cut and for two reasons or more. Number 1: I remembered watching this in January and December of last year and I remembered that at the same scene, Jake threw a RDA soldier at Mansk. And I remembered looking at the Avatar Wiki one time and it says that Mansk is either unconfirmed alive or dead. But in this scene it confirmed Mansk is dead. Number 2: I wanted to see more of Jake using his automatic rifle because we only had a few scenes of him using it. Especially on this deleted scene when he took the rifle from Mansk to shoot at a RDA soldier. Could we see him use his gun more when he was in the forest retreating from the RDA with Neteyam, Neytiri and his other kids? Number 3: With this deleted cutscene, Cameron shouldn’t have cut it because it shows us how enraged Neytiri is; especially when she stabs two RDA soldiers uncontrollably. It adds to her character. Number 4: It shock me that even Jake was scared of her- Jake probably have never seen this side of Neytiri ever since on what happened to her father, but he calmly and persuaded his wife to give the knife to him. Number 5: I wanted to see more actions especially with Jake and Neytiri teaming up. I could go on and on. But to summarize this, Cameron shouldn’t have cut this scene. I hope to see more deleted scenes in the future and I hope if there’s a extended deleted fight scene that’s been cut between Jake and Quaritch when they were in hand to hand combat at the end.

6:51 Notice how Jake occasionally looks over at Quaritch, holding out his hand to keep him at bay while trying to talk Neytiri down (like he’s communicating to him he’ll get her to release spider like he did with Kiri). He was really in a tight spot here because he knows if she kills Spider that’ll send Quaritch into a frenzy and if word got out to the RDA of a Nav’i straight up and personally murdering a human kid that’ll provoke them to plan out even harsher forces/methods to retaliate with.

Neytiri lost her sister, her father and her home because of the Sky People, was betrayed by the one she loved, had to leave her mother and her people behind because the Sky People had returned, and then lost her eldest son right in front of her, and that’s when she completely snapped. The red mist descended, absolutely and completely blinded by rage and grief. And you can actually see as she comes down from this rage, slowly realising what she was doing and what she was just about to do, you can see her shock at herself for doing what she’s doing. And interestingly, when she releases Spider, she pushes him behind her, not toward Quaritch

I would cut out Neytiri brutality killing the soldiers to retrain the M rating (M is the Australian audience rating equivalent of PG 13). But I would certainly keep the scene where Jake and Kiri have to interfere to save Spider's life. I do find it very curious on how directors and executive producers cut out scenes that could have added more context to the film and build more suspense for the drama between characters.

I truly think this shouldve been left in the movie despite how dark it is. It needs to show just how much agony Neytiri is in. Humans killed her sister in their own school, killed her father, blew up her home, destroyed the sacred trees so she can no longer speak to her loved ones and ancestors, tried to bomb the MOST sacred tree with what little remained of her people inside in an attempt for genocide, burned down her forests and polluted everything that was touched, forced her and her children out of the forest, killed her Ikran, killed Tsutey (however you spell his name), followed her way out into the ocean, kidnapped her children, and then finally the straw that broke the camel's back - killed her first born son who she was pregnant with during the first war Neteyam. Like enough is enough, at some point, anyone of any mental resolve - no matter how strong - will fall into absolute madness and darkness where all you want to do is stab them repeatedly and scream and cry and release every ounce of pent up rage from decades of trauma and pain and loss. Neytiri deserves to have these scenes because I can understand exactly why she got so dark. The movie doesnt need to be balanced because there is no balance. Way too much darkness to ignore the raw emotion that comes with it. I still dont understand why Spider saved his father after seeing Neytiri finally snap. Its not like he doesnt know what happened to her or Netayam.

After seeing the cut version, I was able to draw parallels to the ceremony when Jake passed on chiefdom. That made it reasonable for Spider to trust her after this scene because he would have known their customs. She said a son for a son before a cut to the chest just as Jake said a life fore a life as he passed the role of Chief. This extra footage makes Spider's choice to stay with the Sully's really dumb. Unless they planned to have him stay with the colonel after bringing him to shore. My guess is they had it planned to go one of two directions with who spider went with in the end and what footage stayed depended on that.

I get why they changed it. From what I've seen, a lot of people left this movie really not seeing Neytiri as a sympathetic character. They sympathized more with Quaritch. I think this scene would've pushed that even farther for those people, and more people to see things that way. For a movie about the colonization of indigenous people, I think Neytiri's point of view wasn't shown enough for this complex of a scene to have been justified.

Second of all Quaritch is a monster who seeks revenge, shown in a very bad light, literal villain and a bad person, who possibly was ready to kill a kid of an enemy. She saw every important moment of his life, she saw him integrating into culture at a very young age, he's "one of the people" in everything except his skin.

@@neongroves6400 Quaritch was the man in command, and in military its the commander that bears the main responsibility of its soldiers. They have killed many of Neytiri's family, and will continue to do so as long as theyre alive. Spider is effectively an alien orphan, child of the biggest enemy of your entire People, and is not an adopted child of the Sully family. She never held Spider in the same regard(understandably) as her family, its obvious from the start of the movie when she left Spider to be captured while rescuing her kids. Good guys that are virtuous and without flaws are boring af, thinking that Neytiri is a completely benevolent character who forgives her enemies is laughable. What she did wasnt exactly "right"(and she did snap out of it), but saying she has no right to treat Spider like that in the situation is just virtue signaling. Spider did help the enemy(voluntarily or not), and ultimately rescued Quaritch(and hid that fact from the others) showing his true colors. I bet in the next movies his character development is going to go more and more towards the human side, because he has clear daddy issues.

This why I go by the theory of Neytiri having a "Sarah Connor like arc" for film 3. No doubt as part of the role-reversal, vengeance will be a very compelling part of the Na'vi. Also a theory that the Ash people being a necessary evil they ally with. But how will that sentiment hold when they go from killing soldiers to likely mass-murdering thousands to potentially millions of civilians and refugees that will arrive to Bridgehead City?
@bacchante1

100% they should have kept in the scene. I always, ALWAYS wondered why Jake never spoke up for Spider when Neytiri was threatening him. It made him look pretty callous or at least indifferent to Spider, like he'd been all throughout the film by calling him things like a 'stray cat' and not really caring when Spider was captured and how he might be interrogated (except for worrying what they could get out of him, anyway). His silence in the movie while Neytiri had a knife at Spider's throat always struck me as him just... waiting to see if it would work. Maybe even approving of what she did. So yeah, I wish they'd kept this scene in, at least it does something to portray Jake in a better light. He's really the first to speak up when he realizes Neytiri isn't letting Spider go, and even looks mildly worried (though whether for Spider or Neytiri is debatable). This, even though he lost a son too, and hurting Spider would be a sure way to get back at Quaritch and possibly gain an advantage. The scene kind of provides a nicely symbolic reason for the bow breaking, too. Neytiri's recklessly using and breaking people and objects important to her in pursuit of revenge, like disregarding how her kids feel about Spider. Or maybe it was showing how she'd strayed too far from what her father charged her to do when he gave her the bow; she'd gone from warrior and protector to a savage willing to murder the helpless and innocents. And her thousand-yard stare while mumbling, 'A son for a son' brings it to a much creepier level, giving the audience the sense that she's unstable as hell, barely in control, and Spider's right to be as scared of Neytiri as he is. It absolutely makes Spider's actions in saving Quaritch from drowning resonate better. Spider's always been revealed as selfless and compassionate, but in that scene Quaritch showed just how much more he actually cared about Spider's safety than he did about keeping the upper hand. We (and Spider) don't know if Quaritch was just bluffing by threatening Kiri, but by keeping that scene, everyone would've known for sure Neytiri wasn't. She was willing to sink to a level so low, even Quaritch may not have gone there. He was willing to use kids as bait or as hostages, but Neytiri would outright kill them for revenge.

I think it would have been too dark. Neytiri is a fan favourite and her being not just willing but almost eager to kill a child she has known all his life for revenge would have destroyed a lot of sympathy for her with viewers. It also would make an eventual reconciliation between her and Spider almost impossible, or at least very difficult. I like this scene as it confirms that Neytiri wasn't bluffing (which I have been saying all this time), but I'm also glad they went with a less intense version for the final cut.

A mother going into a bloodrage because of an enemy thats killing everyone you love? Somehow in Neytiri's case its "too far" but everyone sympathizes with John Wick for losing the dog. The fact that Jake managed to take her out of that mode makes the scene even stronger, showing that Neytiri wasnt in "all there" at that moment, not her normal self. The reason for cutting some of that out is simply due to the fact that its a family movie, and they had already crossed the brutality budget with the boat guy's arm flying off.

I think leaving this scene in would have did more to bring the light/dark balance closer to 50/50. In not just this movie but the first and second one together. I'm not sure what her storyline will be in later films, but seeing Ney'tiri at her absolute darkest and doing her worst, will show how far she has come with her character arc by the end of the final Avatar film. If this movie were the final film, I'd be more in favor of toning down her savagery. But without knowing her character arc in future films, leaving this in uncut might ultimately have proven to be a better decision.
