When you watch a video like this, you have to ask yourself why they're not all riding recumbents. Diamond frames are great offroad and for doing the shopping, but for touring and road racing recumbents are just the obvious choice.

Thank you, Rick! I must have been lucky with form, because I felt pretty good the entire ride. After 300 km, I felt stronger than ever. I never really had any significant mentally challenging episodes. Also, I somehow stayed clear of sleep deprivation. The few times I felt sleepy, I fixed it with quick naps. I did cut coffee over the 2-3 weeks leading up to the event, and of course drank plenty of coffee during the ride. That may have helped (a lot). More than anything, though, the bike made the ride much more comfortable and much easier than it would have been otherwise.

This is no doubt the best video on PBP.... name any data and all are here. Thank you for sharing the video. Noticed that you have taken most of the control station break within 30mins or so. Just wanted to know what was your nutrition plan, are you having meals in the CP's or outside or carrying your own?
@TorHovland
@TorHovland 11 месяцев назад
Thank you! I did actually carry sports drink powder for the whole ride with me, which was a lot to take on the bike from the start. I didn't bother with that this year. No particular nutrition plan apart from that. I often skipped the hot meal queues at the controls and went for ham baguettes instead.

I find that the light on my handlebars is annoying in total darkness. It lights up my legs, and my legs cast shadows where I want to see. I have my light mounted up front just left of the cranks on that little tap that is out there. I also have a light under the pedals pointing down and forward. It's a very diffuse light so it can be seen easily by oncoming traffic. It's not bright enough by itself to light the road up when I'm at speed coming down a hill.

@@TorHovland 2 hours of sleep is absolutely not enough for adequate decision - making by the driver of a vehicle on public roads. According to studies, after 24 hours without sleep, the driver's reactions correspond to a drunk with an alcohol content of 1 ppm in the exhaled air. This is the duplicity of the organizers, fining for violating traffic rules, but lack of sleep is already a violation in itself.

Hello ! What "radical design" banana bag had you taken for this run ? (Racer, S or M ?)
@TorHovland
@TorHovland Год назад
These bags predate the current models. I think they only came in this one size, but they're probably similar to the current M. For PBP I would recommend the Banana Racer, though. The bigger ones are nice for bikepacking with a compact sleeping bag.

Congratulations on a great ride. I’ve been fascinated by the PBP since I first read about it in the late 70’s. Thank you for bringing it to life for me. What did you use to to record the stats on the screen? I assume you then used editing software to add it to your video.
@TorHovland
@TorHovland 4 года назад
Thanks! Filmed and edited using Insta360 software, then edited using Garmin Virb. Which unfortunately was quite slow and buggy. Apparently designed for overlaying on one, or a few, clips. With a hundred short clips the whole process was quite time consuming. Hoping for updated software soon.

Tor- are recumbents faster than regular bikes? what the maximum speed you've achieved on your recumbent?
@TorHovland

Yes, they are. Or rather, you spend less energy riding them. The top speed going downhill isn't necessarily higher, but you can cruise along the flats doing 30+ km/h at a lower effort.

@TorHovland
@TorHovland 4 года назад
Thank you! That's a Fenix BC30, bought specifically because it uses replacable 18650 Li-ion batteries. I had one set of rechargeable batteries (but no charger), as well as 3 sets of non-rechargeable ones. That should be enough for 4 nights if I saved power. I used the backup light until it got properly dark, and then I put the light on one of the two lowest modes out of the 4 possible. The brightest mode runs through a set of batteries in an hour or so. The light setup was the single item I was the least happy with. Not because of the light itself, but because the downward-facing boom on my Vendetta made it hard to get the light pointing sufficiently up on the road ahead. I have since built a Son 28 dynamo wheel and bought a B&M Luxos 90. I hope to be able to mount that a bit better on the bike. I currently run it on my upright bike, and I really enjoy not having to think about batteries.
@BrunoBA
@BrunoBA 4 года назад
@@TorHovland Hi! Thanks for the reply! I've also found out the dynamo hubs (Son or other) are better in the longest brevets (no hassle with the batteries) and leave me less worried about running out of juice. Furthermore, when we add up the weight of the batteries, the dynamo doesn't weight more than the replaceable batteries.

@@TorHovland - I have tubulars on my Silvio 2.1 and this season upgraded to 30mm Schwalbe One - very smooth compared to the 23 and 25 Contis and Gatorskin I had before. My rims aren't actually ideal for the 30mm size but work just fine, no issues.
@wouterwalt
@wouterwalt 3 года назад
@@TorHovland I am also considering to buy a V20, however many people suggest that it has a very harsh ride on bad roads because of the aluminium frame (potholes, cobblestones...) which makes me doubt (and consider the pelso brevet instead). Did you do any particular modifications (other seat?) to make it more comfortable, because 25 and 23 mm does not sound like plenty of air cushion from the tires? Anyway, great performance in PBP and in your other brevets, congrats!
@TorHovland
@TorHovland 3 года назад
@@wouterwalt Hi! When I first tried a Vendetta, I noticed that, but that was mostly because the neck rest didn't fit very well. On my own Vendetta I ride unmodified with the quite thin stock seat pad. I do have a partly inflated tube in my neck rest, though. I've ridden lots of long rides, and I've never felt the bike to be too harsh. But it is a race oriented bike, so don't expect it to be super smooth. And it's not a gravel bike. If I wanted a more cushioned ride, I would have chosen the Cruzbike S40 with wider tires, or maybe even the brand new Q45.
