Team GB have won their first medal of the Paris Olympic Games.
Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen won bronze in the women's synchronised 3m springboard diving.
China took gold, while the US won the silver medal.

Traditionally,GB don't win any medals on the first day (did Wiggo or someone get anything in the men's road race cycling at London 2012?),so it's nice to start off with one this early this time!

The Chinese pair were a cut above the rest from start to finish in this,although one of them was carrying an injury niggle apparently. The USA soon got themselves into a strong position and at first it was between Great Britain,Australia,Italy and perhaps Germany to join them in the medals. The Australian girls had it almost in their grasp going into the final round of dives,ahead of Great Britain and Italy,but they must be heartbroken at what went wrong with that last dive of theirs. It looked like one of them put her foot in the wrong place,then on the next bounce put one foot on and the other off the edge of the springboard,and that twisted her round all over the place. Our British girls had followed their one slightly iffy dive with two strong ones to finish,leaving only the Italians to try and catch them for the bronze,and they couldn't quite.

can someone explain to me why England, Scotland, Wales and NI don't participate in the Olympics separately as they do in football intstead of being team GB?

The straightforward answer is because they always have. In 1896 it was decided that Great Britain (technically then Great Britain and Ireland) would compete as a united team even though there were separate organisations in each of the 4 countries for many sports. And ever since then it's stuck.

Hopefully in olympic sports the judges must be fair in judging. The athlete must be fair too in their opponent not taking somewhat just to win the gold medal.

They compete under Great Britain. Their official code is GB-NIR, however in the Olympics they are simply GBR.

And ever since then it's stuck. Northern Ireland remains part of the Great Britain Olympic Committee, but stays out of the initals of GBR.
