One of the horses I work with in my www.amandawilsontraining.co.nz series is Paris, a superb young filly by Columbus VWNZ x KG Olympia. This mare has all the makings of a top sport horse and also the nature to become a dream, forever type of horse.
For her first year of life, she enjoyed living out in a large family band and had very limited interactions with me, other than to trim her feet and get to know her. In fact, she was a very shy filly and took quite a bit of time to become interested in hanging out with humans. In that time, I just hung out with the other foals and allowed her to build curiosity and braveness, before finally being able to scratch her and have her enjoy my company.
As a yearling (rising 2-year-old), I bought her in to begin her education and in total, she had four days of training all up, before being turned back out in the paddock. As a 2-year-old she might come back in for half a dozen more sessions, but that will be it. Then as a 3-year-old she will be backed, which might consist of 5-12 rides, and then be turned out till a rising 4-year-old.
Because Paris is very bloody, she can be a bit high energy and can throw tantrums when she is overwhelmed, so my job with her is to teach her how to regulate her emotions and find relaxation when she has been overstimulated. The improvement in just a few short sessions has been amazing and I am so excited to continue my training with her over the next few years.
