Speaking of Yardley, back when funds were tight, I used to shave exclusively with Yardley oatmeal and almond and a little bit of Nivea sensitive after shave balm. I would take a small bar that was too small for body soap, lather it up in a mug and then add the Nivea right before the lather fully developed. Worked pretty good for me before I invested in all the fun soaps and creams.

Nick, if you like the mild shave but prefer a short handle, you should check out the 87R. It appears to be modeled after the British Gillette Aristocrats from the late '40s, and is similar in size and weight to a 195 Adjustable (aka "Fat Boy"). I got mine last week and like it a lot.

Purely for entertainment purposes, I'd love to watch you do a video with the Barrister and Mann Arctique. I just used it with the after shave for the first time and man is that stuff cold (loads of menthol). Personally, I love it with all this summer heat. Love the videos though! Always enjoy them!

Cute dog. I really like your stuff Nick, and I mean it like a friend when I say that you make me slap my forehead every time you hit something in an ingredients list more than a syllable or two and say "oh oh, sounds preservativey! Must be bad!" Thumbs up for at least doing a little homework, and asking Joe about it.

I have the Parker 99R which is the same as the 66R except the 99R has the original parker 2013 head on it which made the Parker a famous razor and is a bit more aggressive. The 66R has a different head. I get consistant BBS shaves with the 99R. I find that the open comb Parkers are milder than the closed combs but more efficient. My 26C is a great razor.

@slipfox392
@slipfox392 8 лет назад
Hey Nick! Gotta say I love your videos. Been wet shaving for the past few months now with a double edge safey razor. Gotta say I absolutely love it. People like you have taught me so much, and really shaving went from something I have to do as a JROTC cadet and soon to be US Army soldier to something I genuinely love doing. Keep on making these awesome vids! It really helps people like me. :) P.S. I'm working on making a replica of the Gillette Khaki set issued in World War 1, but unfortunately the company that made those discontinued them. But they still sell the case so I'm thinking of using that for a similar style razor and I'm stuck between the Merkur 1904 and the Merkur 15C. Also never tried an open comb before as the only safety razor I currently have is the Van Der Hagen since it's available in most stores.

Nick can I ask how, have you ever had a soap go bad on you? I now you have a bunch of soaps... some makers/manufacturers have told me they should last around a year unless you keep them frozen... I had a tub of Cella recently go bad on me, it developed little hard beads of dried lather about half way through it. I tossed it and bought a new one! What is your opinion on this?

Hey Nick, thank you for your videos! Thanks to you I finally know how to shave with less irritation (sensitive skin and coarse hair). But during my second pass (crossgrain) I sruggle around my mustache area. I get cuts really easy on there, but I want to get it there smoother. Any tips? :)

@SGBass
@SGBass 8 лет назад
I have used the Parker silvertip badger brush for the past year, and honestly I would recommend you consider a different manufacturer. They aren't too bad, given the price, but they don't feel or lather anywhere near as nice as Kent, Edwin Jagger, or Simpsons. If you are going to wet shave for the rest of your life you would be better investing in a top quality brush.
@joeyasaperson

would you say that the Merkur 34c is like what you described? Mild but can have a bite to it?
@ashtonmcmullen6799
@ashtonmcmullen6799 8 лет назад
not nick, but I'd say so. the blade gap on the Merkur really means that's the blade and it's smoothness/sharpness will determine the shave's aggression. so yeah, it can be mild (with derby's, etc.) or it can be quite aggressive with some bite (feathers, etc.)

Thanks bro I'm a newbie and have a lot to learn. Just ordered my shaving kit which consist of the Merkur 34C, Barrister and mann shaving soap, omega 10066 brush, the Imperial Bergamot after shave splash and Malin & Goetz after shave cream. Any tips for me?
@nevermore311
@nevermore311 8 лет назад
That's a great starting point. Best tips for beginners: 1) shower before you shave, 2) little-to-no pressure, 3) load LOTS of soap... Maybe 30 seconds or more of aggressive loading. I also recommend beginners taking a look at synthetic brushes as their 2nd brush. No soaking required, they travel well, they make lather quicker/easier, and they've become very cheap from Stirling, Razorock, or Maggard.

@nevermore311
@nevermore311 8 лет назад
+HoustonTX Agreed. You want brushes that can teach you things about your preferences. Plissoft will teach you much. And for a 3rd brush, perhaps a 2-band badger or Silvertip in the $30-$70 price range. It's the best way to learn what type of hair/fiber you prefer.

@spencerfrankel414
@spencerfrankel414 7 лет назад
TheDqwt for me I find it closes pores well and closes off blood spots. I apply aftershave balm right after and I've never had troubles. I've got sensitive skin too 😊
@TheDqwt
@TheDqwt 7 лет назад
I know. The main reason it has alcohol is that it's supposed to provide disinfection for cuts like the rubbing alcohol you see in first aid kits. I never really use an alcohol-based aftershave because it doesn't work for me. All it does it irritates me and it burns my skin despite that my skin is not very sensitive. I used to apply an alcohol-based aftershave and I don't use them anymore because of that. So instead, I use an alcohol-free aftershave including a moisturizer after I shave.

So, I just shaved today for the FIRST time in my life with a DE razor (merkur 34c and derby extra blade). I have always used a Gillette cartridge razor ( whatever the most current one was) since I started shaving about 20 years ago. I have NEVER gotten a WORSE shave than with the DE razor today! multiple passes, with the grain, against the grain, across the grain. I showered right before it and washed my face with WARM water and everything. Tons of stubble still left behind, worse irritation than ever got with a cartridge shave. The only thing I didn't do exactly like the teaching guys on youtube (like Nick), is I used regular Harry's brand shave gel and just applied with my fingers, NOT a shave brush (didn't want to spend the extra money). Can anyone tell me if using the brush and a true shave soap REALLY will help that much? I think it's mostly a gimmick to sell more shit to us. I also think I am just super UNLUCKY to have skin that will never get a super close shave no matter what I do! Someone please give my some good news here - I REALLY REALLY don't want to keep spending 4 bucks PER blade on gillette fusion proglide power blades. Thank you to anyone who can help!
