Absolutely. The issue with the American talkshow guys like Letterman and Conan, they want to be in the limelight. A good talk show host is a facilitator. For me, I think they just need to provide the best environment for the guest to be themselves. Graham Norton is good at this. He finds a great balance of letting the guests do their thing while being funny at appropiate times.
@@kapturelab I agree! Though in fairness Letterman was a much better facilitator than a lot of other American talk show hosts. How he interacts with Peter O'Toole on his show is a good example of this :)
I agree but do you actually call today’s night talk show host good??….Kimble and the rest are just trash…they try to make it more about them selfs then the guests not to mention it’s to political…only one i respected was Conan O’Brien
@@MITCH_61 Conan is just as bad as the rest. He waffles on and tries to make unfunny jokes instead of just letting the guest talk. Also, there's no such thing as too political. Politics affects everything and everyone, and that's why it's everywhere.
What annoys me about Conan and Colbert is their perception on being Irish and all the Irish stereotyping Irish crap, they haven't a clue, I'm Irish and I hate that carry on. My people stayed at home and done the fighting.
Despite all of his incredible accomplishments, I love the fact that they introduced Billy with “A talented welder”, you just know Billy asked for that! 😂😂
@@johnhamilton5431 his mate Gerry Rafferty was an outstanding musician. I was brought up in a place called Clydebank and Billy would take his Raleigh bike down to the Lomond shores and play his bango . He cracks me up . The one with the guy who killed his wife is a classic. I know it doesn't sound good but if you ain't seen it you should it's on an interview with Parkinson.
Love billy ❤️, my favourite performance of his was “an audience with Billy Connolly”. It was filmed in 1981 I think , the audience is quite well known to say the least including a young Bob Geldoff !
+Stewart Nicol as BILLY CONNOLLY I love Billy.I have watched him talking about 'wildebeest' and everytime I watch it I howl with laughter. Especially when one of the lionesses, says "Agnes" I spat my coffee all over my keyboard. And the dwarf woman on the bus, hilarious.
'The door opened and he looked out and smiled and the hair flopped like that and I thought Jeeeesus I fancy him myself' - absolutely died laughing at this hahahahaa
I'll never forget seeing one of Billy's stand up shows in Hammersmith some years ago. I laughed so much I was doubled up with stomach pains by the end. Easily the best live show I've ever seen in my life
I've met Billy in London and asked him, he said Tom is genuinely a nice guy. And this was two Glaswegian's together without a recording device, he could have torn him to shreds without recourse.....and he didn't. Sold it for me. And again just watch the video, Tom Cruise is just smiling, but not fake smiling, the entire way through. You could act that, check his other interviews where he does, it's obvious this was different.
Billy Connolly is not only a comedy genious. He is so much more. The way he walked on stage and took over the show, so effortlessly. He is a wonderful, delightful, natural raconteur; yet kind, well meaning, I would have to dig very deep to find anything derogatory about him. A truly unique man and an honor to have met.
This is so perfect, a TV host on his own show, one of the most well known and respected actors of all time, and Billy walks on like the show was made for him and kills. If you don't understand the time period then you don't understand how much Billy was a true pioneer of freedom of speech but always did it in the most hilarious way possible
I honestly thought that Tom Cruise was going to fall off his chair, when our Billy said that, when he saw him coming off a plane, and had his head in view, when a lock of his hair flopped over his face.........and Billy said "He could have fancied him himself"! He did say that during filming, they never knew what he was going to say next, and were in a state of wonder till the filming for that day was over! What a character Billy was in his prime, no-one could help being filled with total amusement in his company!
@@marinerstim9420 if u look up billy connelly hbo on RU-vid .billy in America,I think it was his first gig in America but I could b wrong.the one where whoopi Goldberg opens for him.well you’ll see robin williams in the front row.clearly having a good time
Apart from Robin Williams there is no other comic who could go on a chat show and be so consistently utterly hilarious by just talking utter nonsense,,,it's no surprise they were great friends...a pair of comedic geniuses.
billy overwhelms tom ,and he do-sent mind! i love billy the most ,but i have immense respect for tom cruse for just being quiet .Tom cruse is a legend as always ,he is , as i have seen an amicable man who adapts ..so that is why he is loved !
Jonathan Gault but an fantastic dialect met a Scottish man here in Norway and we understand each other and he asked if I was Scottish maybe my pronunciation was sounding Scottish . An fantastic man Billy is
poor tom can't win, either he laughs too hard and too much and is being fake and cheesy or he doesn't laugh enough and would then seen as being a jerk and self absorbed... give the guy a break! he's a GREAT MOVIE STAR THE BIGGEST of our generation and a more or less decent hardworking generous person, imagine for a moment having to "live up to being "TOM CRUISE" and critiqued 24/7 in any and everything you do?... p.s. the commentar parkinson was laughing just has hard too!
I remember watching Billy and laughing so hard I honestly thought I was going to suffocate . I could not draw breath and still couldn't stop laughing. There's no one like him, it's so sad he had to retire. His Parkinson's disease now prevents him from performing. If he still had his health I bet he'd still be up there killing us with his comedy. Such a loss.
@@colshythecomedian there's something really awkward and slightly pathetic about Cruise's thigh-slapping reactions to humour whenever he's interviewed. Yes, he's an actor, and yes, he's acting, but I feel a little sorry for him. It's as though he's desperate to be likeable, and to be liked.
Seeing a magnetic personality come on and just not only take the lime-light but put everyone else at ease.....that is a magical quality, always running himself down whilst everyone can't keep their eyes off him. What an incredible gift. The only other person I have seen do that is Robin Williams. Great to see The Cruise in hysterics.
Yes! They are the two men in the world that can command the attention of a room without even trying. I love them both so much, I can’t imagine a world without at least one of them in it.
NOT "MAYBE"...BILLY IS FAR FUNNIER THAN ROBIN William's (even though I love RW). Even though Billy curses (which never offends me) he is never vulgar. This is delightful to see Tom Cruise in stitches.
billys been doing it for decades to everybody. he could cure manic depression in 30 seconds. hes from glasgow, hes a patter merchant n quick witted. its a survival tool up there in those days. a guys no gonna take your face off with a bayonet if youve got him pissing himself laughing
Billy - great, best stand up in the world. Tom Cruise is his friend and Billy rates him highly as a person - that's all the bampots leaving comments about Tom Cruise need know.
My very first experience of Billy’s genius - He was describing an early “gig” supporting Elton John in Madison Square Garden, where he was made to feel: “...about as welcome as a fart in a spacesuit.” Genius.
Loved Billy for decades. He’s a true blue legend from way back. He’s still kicking around god bless him. Such a loveable addictive character to like that you just don’t know what he’s going to say next.
Why on gods earth would 98 people downvote this comedy genius, funny man who does so much for charity even while hes suffering from Alzheimer's and cancer. Seriously you people have a pretty sad life if you feel the need to down vote this.
Thank you for drawing the distinction. Two vastly different causes and totally different prognoses. My husband has Alzheimer's, I am his carer, and I have Parkinson's. My life expectation is much longer than his. I am aware of this. Thankfully, he is not.
0:54 JUST as Parky is about to ask the first question, Billy sticks his foot in and stops him dead in his tracks. This isn't The Michael Parkinson Show, it's The Billy Connolly Show.
I don't get the hate he gets...well, I kinda get it, actually. The general public loves to see people rise and fall. The masses are emotional vampires feeding on the dazzling successes and cataclysmic failures of god-made people, aka, celebrities. Those are the people the masses love to adore and hate. Tom has been at the top of his game for 30 years, that's too much to bear, for some. He is a scientologist...So what! The dude hasn't killed anyone, raped anyone, stole from anyone...Fuck haters!
Billy always slagged off his own singing voice, but some of the stuff he done with Gerry Rafferty as 'The Humblebums' is brilliant! Check them out, you won't regret it.
Billy is the best . Incredibly funny guy.Parkie like most of us Brits just ger him, pure magic. Tom Cruise for me doesnt find any of this funny, being an intelligent actor he knows the routine & acts accordingly to give a show. He can go from belly aching hysterics to sat straight upright in a split second. None of us genuinely can do that. Fair play to Tom though for following through. RIP Parkie x
I’ve seen him in other interviews where his laugh is so intense. Also at times when his religion is brought up and they go into depth about it u can sense a change in the atmosphere. He becomes cold and even his eyes completely change.like a proper psycho 😳I do like Tom as an actor and he actually seems pretty cool but man I think there’s a very dark side there
It's true, this is the effect that Billy Connelly has on people. I'm sitting here on the floor in stitches because the laughing made me fall off my chair.
For me his greatest story is the holiday in ibiza. The first time I hired the compilation video I was so unprepared for it, I'm amazed that I didn't die laughing like a man in either the late 70s/early 80s who keeled over watching an episode of The Goodies. Having seen a lot of their shows growing up, it's clear to me had he seen the routine listed above, he'd have no chance.
Billy, is 1 of 2 comedians as my favourites, they are themselves and they are so genuinely hillariously funny. The other is Robin Williams. These 2 men have brought so much joy, laughter, and happiness to our lives. Thank you for the laughs!
Brett I grew up with billy but for a few years I kinda drifted away from billy and loved watching lee evens.got back into billy a few years back and he’s still up there as one of if not the top comedian for me.Still love watching lee evans and also Dave chappelle
