Megalodon is far and away the most well-known extinct shark, and for many reasons, its massive size being among the main ones. And yet, with all of this attention, it passes many by that they do have quite an extensive list of relatives that go underappreciated in the group they belong to, the Otodontids, and one of the most notable of these animals living under Megalodons metaphorical shadow is Parotodus, the last of the megatooths. I hope you enjoy this year's Shark Week!

please cover other megatoothed sharks, they are extremely and unfairly underrated and deserve as much of a spotlight as the Megalodon themselves!

Truly curious how their body plan evolved, not just the teeth. Most renditions depict them as discount megalodons.

I wonder how far into the Pleistocene they survived, considering their apparent difficulty with fossilising, it could have been some time after the last known fossils!

I'm sure all of the glaciation events wouldn't have helped, so I don't think they would have got to the ends of the epoch unfortunately. Still a very impressive timespan though!

I’m always interested in the species that are the last of their family, the Fakoshark teeth fossilising rarely may show some really interesting signs, glad this vid recognised a more niche megalodon relative!

I'm liking this (sadly short cause theres not much about them) videos on extinct shark and relatives. I hope I'll see one about Parahelicoprion, Saivodus or Edaphodon, all of them very obscure, especially the third

As sad as I am to see any lineage go extinct, I'm glad we as a species don't have to deal with small whale-sized sharks.

I will at some point, I'm sure. :) For what I have lined up for the rest of Shark Week, the only other one I'll be covering is Megalodon itself, so no luck there. Eventually, though.
