In this video, Dr Jason Crean and I debunk some common parrot food myths in addition to discussing what's best to feed our birds.
We are always learning about new ways to allow our birds to thrive rather than just survive. When considering what to feed your bird, it's crucial to have an open mind, to follow the science, and to always strive to do better for our feathered friends.

I am a new Sun Conure dad and I am thankful that I found your videos and just wanted to say thanks. I have been researching my bird choice for almost a year and I still feel like I know nothing. My bird, Ollie, comes home this weekend and I am scared, thrilled, excited, nervous, and any other adjective you can think of. I have been watching and so many people contradict each other. I hope my baby forgives my mistakes

Thanks for this follow up! I think the raw food diet comes with the human putting more time and attention on things they didn't before. It's complicated, pellets are an option, yes... but hopefully this diet becomes the go to for most bird owners. I'm still learning and feel like it's hard but thanks to you, David and Dr. Crean for making this info available 🦜💚

Sophie you’re absolutely lovely and adorable. I very much enjoy listening to you. Also my name is Sophie so I guess we are both Sophies who love parrots. Thank you to you and Dr. Crean for presenting this information; it’s because of your channel that I learned about Dr Crean and was shocked that my parrots may not be healthy as I thought after switching from commercial seeds that they were weaned from to pellets (Harrison’s). I made this switch for my green cheek rescue fireball who was my best friend but lost him at 10 years old. He saved me from depression and I would wake up just for him. Now I am very successful, got married and have all the animals and the life I want. I was so angry with myself because I blamed myself for his death. I didn’t understand I had got him on Harrison’s and believed that this was the answer to a healthy bird and blamed myself when he died at 10. Now I have a new baby ring neck and still have my 5 year old jenday and it may not be too late to ensure their health. Thank you for sacrificing your time skills and life to help birds and humans. Also side note my lost my cockatiel at 22 years but her entire life she had a poor diet because I didn’t know. Crazy how that works.

Weighing 3 times a day was my best friend when I just converted my 32 years old African Grey off poopie Nutribird pellets. you know it was such a ease to see when he started to fill more on the fresh stuff than the processed pellets that are sold in my area (I still offer them, looking for a better dry alternative that I can have when I need to feed dry stuff, since I have c-ptsd and hard time waking up in the morning, having a tiny bit of dry stuff is a great help so he’s not completely empty and nippy when I get to feed him his fresh breakfast), and he seems to not even eat more than few bites of the pellets and just wait for the fresh stuff that comes a bit later. the weirdest thing is that the best part of it was not the weighing itself but that I got to introduce his chop in all many different types of “shows” that I preform for him, one day he got to eat it while I mixed some of the ingredients in front of him, the other day he got to taste few of my mixing batches separately, the other day he got to try them separately and than gradually got to get a bite every other mix, it was amazing and it was good because sometimes when you are converting diet the bird can get less receptive to training, yet weighing by itself is a trick, the bird is not full, and you get to enjoy some bond building. I can’t recommend it enough! I am probably gonna throw a morning weighing session just for that bond building now every now and then.

So glad to see you both again 🥰 I just found a report don't by field researchers on the wild diet of Meyer's Parrots, one of their most visited food sources is the black eyed pea, which has my wondering now 🤔 I know beans are an issue, but now I'm curious about why sprouted black eyed peas are such a vital food source but cause issues in home diets. I always recommend sprouts first to people, it's such an easy way to add fresh foods. I have a very narrow diet because of my own body, so i don't have a way around buying large volumes and making a big batch of chop. And I'm very glad the verdict to my question is You're over thinking it 😂🙈 I make a big batch and freeze it, I'm glad it's just a case of home to home and not an issue of crazy nutritional loss. Some yes, but not insane. I'm a bit ruthless with soggy chop (I also add chia seeds to it to soak up extra wet stuff) I also add fresh sprouts, greens, herbs and all kinds of other fresh goodies :) hopefully to fill in any gaps from freezing

Also, I think I may have an idea of why there is a weird feeling towards Dr crean and feeding raw diets may have something to do with human diet culture. So many times people are trying to shill their product that is whole food, anti oxident, gut repairing, or whatever other buzz word that's become popular. And I'll be honest I worried dr crean may be that way too, the "omg you're an awful person if you feed this!" like there are no other factors that play in. I'm disabled and the number of times someone will come up to me asking if this suppliment or that exercise will cure all my problems, and it's usually peppered with the same words. I'm not saying pizza is healthy, it's not, it's also yummy and not dangerous to have now and again, but holy cow some people are out for *blood* when you mention the concept of not having the time or energy to cook dinner tonight. As my service dogs trainer said to me, I believe in real life :)
@BirdNerdSophie

Glad you enjoyed! 😊I think it's also important to remember that birds have access to all kinds of things to neutralise toxins in the wild like clay licks, which is why they can exploit some food sources that we wouldn't necessarily offer under human care! It sounds like you are doing a great job! And I too know what that is like - I am visually impaired, and plenty of people seem to think that a change in diet or added supplements will suddenly cure all of my problems - I wish! And absolutely - we had pizza last night 😂

hi there!! its meee again!!! so while i was re watching his video, i realized hey, EXACTLY!! Henry has changed my life in exactly the same way!! it started one morning, i was microwaving myself an egg for a sandwich and i sprinkled a spoonful of henrys chop in and then i thought HEY!! SO I WAS ORIGINALLY doing his chop every day until i heard others say they did it weekly. so now i do it weekly and while doing so after i finish with a particular item, i do a little more for MYSELF only bigger, and put it in MY container. so henry is making me healthier too!! and i add it into everything, eggs, rice, pita pockets, mixing it into chicken, egg and tuna salad, its great!! and then you guys said it your video. i mostly do, bell, sweet and jalapeno peppers, snap peas, radish, carrot, (which is really easy when you start with shredded carrot) broccoli, broccoli slaw, celery, baby bok choy, cucumber, zucchini, chinese peas, kale cilantro rosemary and mint, and then i just switch up the items weekly, he LOVES peppers, cilantro, mint, kale and the snap peas, and then in the beginning to get him to eat it, i sprinkled some of his dry mix, and shook it all around. he likes it that way so i still do it, he gets this every morning and we call it his breakfast, and he goes back to it all day, i was surprised how quickly he took to it. hes so little, so i make the chop really small, for a cockatiel what size do YOU make it? BTW from seeing you do it i bought him mint and he took to it IMMEDIATLEY!! so every week, when im buying his veg, i see whatever package of herbs we've got marked down, and thats what he gets to try that week, he also loves the rosemary. i love you, i love your channel, it really helps me to give henry the best that i can offer thank you so much for being here!! PS, what kind of flowers do you recommend to feed?

Hey, thanks for watching! 😀 I vary the size of my chop - sometimes riced, sometimes grated, sometimes chunky! My rescue huskies IBD & SIBO is in remission thanks to a strict raw diet. I have multiple health issues. I am now mainly plant based and make all my own meals from scratch. I am in no way cured but I run for a club and am signed up to a marathon next year. I am off course transitioning my young sun conure onto a raw food diet. He initially maintained weight at 95grams. He is now 98grams and eating more of his fresh foods.

When I took on my budgies , they were on a seed only diet. They ate it but now I feed a mix of whole grains and seeds combined with a chop part of which is made up as a batch with other bits added daily. Meals are now far more stimulating and they seem to really enjoy the different components . It makes shopping more interesting too, looking for different foods theg will eat that I won't...eg chilli's. Thank you both for another interesting hour.

Hey Sophie thank you for the video! It's been very helpful for me.. I'm just trying to wean my 7 months old cockatiel. I know the problem is me. I'm too worried about my bird not getting enough food .. he is already on the smaller size (around 70-73 gr when his crops full). When i tried to introduce him to veggies and healthier pellets, he actually responded well to fresh and new foods! He forages all day too. However I'm not sure if he is eating it or not - because to my eyes he seemed like he just chew and shred it, and I notice also less pooping ... therefore I always add his favorite handfeed formula on the afternoon (I put it on bowl now and already reduced it to once a day). So, how to tell if he is eating the veggies and not just play with it? Or how to tell if he is full? I'm told by the vet to look for his crop if he is already full, but with veggies his crop just doesnt look full. I am a new parrot owner so it's a bit confusing for me.. Your advice would be highly appreciated Sophie! 😊
@BirdNerdSophie
@BirdNerdSophie 2 года назад
Hey! Glad you liked it! Birds will often make a mess and shred food as they eat it! The poops will also be different as they should be more solid as a hand feeding formula will produce wetter poops! If you offer the handfeeding formula in a bowl, could you try and mix in some veggies? Have you seen my video on how to get your bird to eat veggies?

@BirdNerdSophie
