Hello bird fans!
A special video for you all today where I host 3 special guests on the channel to discuss common parrot myths and bust them wide open.
Many were from repeat questions that come up on the channel, misconceptions I see often on social media and questions submitted by viewers/patrons!
It was a true pleasure to speak to Dr Jason Crean again and welcome Avian Vet Dr Jamie Abete onto the channel. It was also lovely to have ‪@BirdNerdSophie‬ along to give her opinions and views on the various topics we covered!
It's a long video, but well worth watching till the end!
As usual any comments or questions, do let me know!

Thank you all so much for going over vet sciences and nutrition. I am a new parent to a dusky conure. I brought him to the vet to do a basic wellness check. The whole staff came to see my bird because it was so rare that they saw them and that vet was so condescending to me. I realize a lot of people buy birds on a whim and don't do their research but that wasn't me. She just assumed I had no idea about my bird and tried to explain the most basic facts to me. I wasn't able to get any questions out and the vet watched my bird poo on the floor in front of us while telling me I needed to come back with a fecal sample another time. I was concerned about his beak but got no answers. I gave up $90 for that but I'm debating on doing again somewhere else. I want to make sure he's healthy and established somewhere that actually knows birds.

Sadly before I watched your videos and did some research I owned a cockatiel which did not thrive in my ownership. He was rehomed to a couple that already owned a cockatiel and she was a veterinary assistant. I just did not know about the proper nutrition. Even his breeder did not feed her flock properly as we know of today. Since then I have gotten a cockatiel and have been encouraged to feed him a fresh diet and his breeder gave me her technique for feeding fresh foods. David and Sophie, along with the veterinarians, you have given me so much knowledge for caring for my bird that I was totally unaware of.

My husband got something called “bird lung” from that cockatiel that which necessitated getting rid of him. I’m thinking it was because of his poor diet and lack of sleep that the bird had very bad dust and lost feathers. He was not a picker but he would shed feathers tremendously. Have you every heard of that. It is the diagnosis given to my husband by his pulmonologist.

I feel you, I grew up with my bird was my father’s and he was in really bad shape I felt and still deal with traces of the amount of guilt I felt for the improper care and endless boardem that he experienced in the past. Good on you for reattempting bird care.

Everytime I'm reminded how few board certified avian vets there are the more I realize how lucky I am that I have 15 of them within an hour and 15 mins of me and 4 within 25 minutes! Then if you add avian specialized vets that aren't board certified there is even more. I guess that's a huge benefit of living in a huge metropolitan area. I live outside of Philadelphia.

Regarding grit, even finches and canaries, don’t really need it, because, even though they don’t have a hooked beak, they are perfectly capable of hulling the seed. The chickens will naturally take on quite a bit from the ground, and it allegedly helps them to break stuff down, but they’ll eat pretty much anything so and it’s probably more important for them. Even then, it can cause crop impactions.

Wow I did not know that about oyster shells! That’s shocking to me that oyster shells could potentially cause heavy metal toxicity in parrots and yet it’s still everywhere and widely used to feed parrots. It’s not just in grit like you guys were talking about, I’ve seen it on the ingredients list of certain pellets , mineral blocks, and seed mixes too. I can’t believe that I may have accidentally fed that to my birds when they used to have that mineral block a year ago! Like if your bird needs calcium, feed them fresh broccoli or even eggs if they’re substantially deficient, but now I know to stay far away from oyster shells.

I've been giving calcium supplement from day one and was shocked when my 16 year old cockatiel suddenly had a calcium deficiency. The vet asked if they were getting sunlight regularly (not through a window) and due to a broken leg and cold weather, they hadn't in recent history. Once I started taking him outside more regularly again (screened porch), he no longer had a calcium deficiency. I realized how much I didn't know and that I was missing a HUGE chunk of the nutrition equation in what we learn.
@TheParrotTeacher

It is very true! It’s also great you have a good vet who could identify that really quickly! Vitamin d is so important for our little ones!

Thank you very much for the super informative video. With you and Sophie I always find the best information when it comes to birds and you can be sure that you know what you are talking about and that the health and well-being of the animals is very important to you. If then 2 other professionals like Dr. Crean and Dr. Abete are there it is simply sensational. Four people who you can be sure know what they are talking about. Unfortunately, there are not really many places an Personen in my Country they really know about birds. And what you see on the internet is so much nonsense that it really shouldn't be shown. So thanks again for that and I look forward to many more of them.

Awesome video! So much valuable information and indeed very entertaining. I really hope a lot of parrot owners will watch this and perhaps reconsider some things like diet and those silly cosy-huts etc. Admittedly it is difficult to open up to new ideas when even most of the vets stick to outdated information, so it's good to see people like Dr. Jason Crean und Dr. Jamie Abete spreading their knowledge, and of course you two!
