Clicked on the video because I'm an antiques nerd, but ended up in tears. I suffer from depression and anxiety, and though my living space has never gotten to this level, I empathize so deeply with what this person/persons were going through. Living with mental illness makes it so easy for things to just start piling up and then the mess itself causes you stress, which then worsens the whole cycle. On one side, I'm like "how could this person let it get so bad?" but on the other, I know what it feels like to get stuck in a riptide of illness, using all the energy you have just to keep your head above water

I still have unpacked boxes from when I moved in 2 years ago. I can't unpack them because first I need to wipe down and vaccuum the floor and rugs, and reorganize my bookshelves to find space for the new/old stuff, and then find space in my closet for the other stuff...
@peakay6729

@@lazyhomebody1356 do you also know though that if you haven’t unpacked those boxes in 2 years then you don’t have to open them at all. Just let them go. Whatever is in them - you don’t need. 🙏🏽❤️

We actually do not know if she lived there during all of the hoarding or not. She may have used that house to store stuff in. We do not know if she was mentally ill, or not.

Yes, this gave me anxiety too. Good to see others feel the same. I am currently very slowly decluttering my flat after 15 years of just buying stuff and I realize how much of a burden all these THINGS are. I used to not understand when people said that having lots of stuff leeches out your engergy. Sounded like esoteric nonsense to me, but boy how I understand it now. I never want to get to such a state again. I have very low energy and I can't imagine voluntarily buying a house like this and having to go through it. All the best for you. "Hang in there" sounds like such a basic thing to say but telling myself to hang in there and get through just this one day and not worry about the other days seems to help sometimes.

This breaks my heart. It seems to me this was a very passionate person with a love for life. Something might have happened to her that made her want to cling to things, It seems that her life spiraled out of control and she was too lost in it all to know what to. She might have known she had to do something, but couldn't find out how. It's really sad when clinging onto stuff out of pain ruins you from having joy in the present.

@@TheKatherine1958 Oh my. Wouldn't it be nice to convince her that her precious stuff isn't hardly visible? That her house is bigger than she is currently experiencing. That you take some boxes just to sort her things, no biggie, and try to find a place in the house to stall these things. And never, ever, say that it's messy because than she hears: "you are messy in your head". And this is an insult that touches her heart. Never say it's filthy. Never say: I would do it this way, because she hears: "If I can do it, why didn't you do it?". But that she can do it. Look at all the treasures (years old newspapers, broken things, clothes your grandmother thinks it's too old fashioned). It's all gems to her. You tell her the repairmen will be able to visit soon, and that she is not alone in this? Estimate how long it takes: in 3 weeks you can let the repairmen in. Wouldn't it be nice to have light/gas/water (whatever they need to fix)? I keep on fantasizing. Clear the flat surfaces first. Because the house immediately looks bigger, so the space in her head will immediately be bigger. Maybe a doctor can come to her house, telling her the dust will kill her and she needs to accept help now. Like I said I keep fantasizing. Would have been nice to help everybody in need.

Oh, by the way. The wealthiest self made millionaires I ever met were an elderly married couple who lived next door to me. They owned a resale shop in Chicago where they sold everything. But where they REALLY made all their money was in cleaning out old homes. Brenda had an encyclopedic memory of what everything cost new and what it was worth at resale. She also had a VAST network of vintage dealers, all over the country, that she re-sold to. Brenda and her husband lived a very simple working class lifestyle. Never went out to eat. Never went to movies. No drinking. No drugs. Neither had an education past 8th grade. When they finally retired (gave their business to their daughter, who had earned an MBA living at home on the parents’ dime) Brenda and Husband were worth $5M USD cash.

Scraped house, built duplex and sold. During that time had call for another house same situation. Turned them down. My thoughts were, all that stuff was someone's life, picked over looked at, made comments about, thrown away, family pictures, etc. etc. Sadden me to the point i could not do another one.

@@billybronc9980 That's because you have a heart not blackened by greed,. And empathy. In those days there were no computers, ebooks, Mp3 music files etc., People used book shelves for actual books and everything was stored IRL form. People that were kids during the depression kept their clothing because they grew up not having what they needed. All I heard in this video was greed, and disrespect. I almost feel that "Mr I bought all this" would rather all the elders died so he can make money. He doesn't even bother to get the decades correct, and that's because elders are not to learn from, only to try and profit from. >>Tom's wife

Even vintage costume jewelry can have value. The market for second hand clothes is big and authentic vintage for sure. Even Used vintage sewing patterns are collected and used. Unfortunately for me there are rarely ever plus size patterns or clothes in vintage. Might not be worth a ton to you as an antique dealer unless its high end but there are a ton of vintage clothing stores in Hamilton and Toronto that would die for that stock.

@woudgy
@woudgy 3 года назад
@@carolinegee4097 I obviously know that. But what people refer to as being a "hoarder" is a separate disorder, involves compulsive accumulation and occurs equally in young and healthy people as older people, lasting throughout their lives, whereas Diogenes syndrome is simply becoming overwhelmed and unable to sort things or dispose of them because of diminished capacity due to age. My aunt was a hoarder, my ex husband's father was a hoarder... It's a serious condition that significantly compromises a person's quality of life and often their safety, but the person can otherwise have their full faculties. I think lazily throwing labels around is really unhelpful and feeds the general ignorance, disrespect and contempt the public shows towards people with these conditions.
