It's time you crowdfunded a really decent cassette device, with Cassette Comeback branding and some features not seen since 1996... 😊

@@CassetteComeback Well, that's one thing that might happen, but if the quality is good enough and the price is right, I'm surely interested in it. And yes, I do have an Sony WM-D6C (and even an Sony TC-D5 MII), which both sounds very good (sometimes better than an regular cassettedeck).

No one is willing to build a cassette mechanism that's as good as they were in the 80s and 90s

The mech seems ok...it's the sound electronics that need to be made better

My sanyo mgr 59 has one of the simplest and modt basic mechs there could be but works perfectly fine mostly down to electronics like tony said with no motor noise decent belts and a better device could be made after all china has in the past made units for company's i do wonder if it is down to what ic,s are available .

@@CassetteComeback When you look at the best walkmans of the 80s, which had full-logic soft touch mechanisms, autoreverse, Dolby, track search, and LCD tape counters, it's literally amazing that they could squeeze all that tech into something only half as thick as the device you're reviewing here.
@BanazirGalpsi1968
@BanazirGalpsi1968 Год назад
Which doesn't make sense. Even if you only use it for digital converter ( which is the least important function) tape playback of top quality should be of utmost priority. A top quality tape mech is the only real point. A digital recording from a crap tape mech will be a crap recording, and if your customer wants analog only that also requires best mech. We need to demand that if china is going to sell us these things, it's not quality for invested/ spent money lest they make better tape mechs. Make our stuff worth what we pay you for it.

Until interest in cassette tapes equals that of vinyl, I doubt anyone will put enough research and development to build a higher quality mechanism.

The mech is ok for low end needs, it's the sound circuitry that needs improving.

Thing with records("vinyl") unlike cassettes, manufacturers never actually stopped making high quality turntables, cartridges, and stylii. New cassettes now you got things like this Panda, which could be okay, but you have to be handy with a soldering iron to make it play as it should(to swap the channels round).

No Erase head? Not a problem, the permanent magnet on the back of that speaker will wipe your tapes automatically - Genius!

It doesn't. The magnet is not very strong and it is also not in direct contact with tape. Don't forget walkman motor also has magnets in it.

it will not, like the comment upside says There has been a lot of walkmans and cassette recorders back in the 80s and 90s that had a speaker touching the cassette or near the area and its safe to use.

*I wouldn't be one bit surprised if the production equipment for the classic older quality walkman and related portable stereo units from the 1980s and 1990s are still in storage in Japan* It's kind of surprising that someone hasn't bought the stuff from the big companies and started using it again. The prices would be higher obviously, but the quality would be well worth it

I've seen numerous Chinese products with either its RCA cables or jacks marked up red for L and white for R. I'm starting to wonder if the reversed colors are the standard over there compared to how the rest of the world, thus possibly creating confusion in Panda's (or its OEM provider) own manufacturing plant.

Although Sony uses the Walkman trade name for its current digital music players, the phrase "walkman" long ago entered popular lexicon throughout the world for portable cassette player (PCP) units. Sony lost enforceability of the "walkman" three decades ago.

No it is a TF card. Allow me to educate you. SD cards were replaced by TF cards. TF cards were made by Motorola and SanDisk, and of course they licensed them so that other companies could pay them to make cards, but they could not use the name, so companies called TF Cards micros SD Cards. SanDisk used the term mixcro SD TF Card on their cards, so other companies simply called them micro SD Cards. Nonetheless, they are TF Cards, but most companies that make them call them Micro SD Cards.

Left and right channels: Well, as China is actualy located on the other side of the World it's totaly normal they flip the channels. Think about that, Tony! Furthermore the adnaps, you know those black & white cute little bears, have their ears inverted, they hear backward and uspide down. The only thing that can bring the cassette back will be a portable with a decent mech and head, with the most narrow and sleek design possible, and with a FULL AND CLEAR view of the whole cassette spinning. If the cassette is not conspicuously spinning then there is just no point. And only sony could do it with enough noise to sell the units at the price required to make the project maybe profitable. It really should be a sony vanity project.
@80s_Boombox_Collector
@80s_Boombox_Collector Год назад
If Sony still possesses the designs, drawings, and molds for one of their old mechanisms, they might agree to do it. If they don't, I doubt it. It would require too much upfront cost to design a new mechanism from scratch, especially with the quality Sony would demand.
@BanazirGalpsi1968
@BanazirGalpsi1968 Год назад
Not really. True they might have to sacrifice one or two really good old units but all theyvegot to do is taking apart and reverse-engineer them.
@BanazirGalpsi1968
@BanazirGalpsi1968 Год назад
That's just copying reverse engineering. I'm sure my gut tells me the tooling isn't even as bad as you think. It's mostly just expert analysis with scanning and drawing and with these days equipment they can do that easily. The original Lachlan was $200 I'm sure 200 or even $300 would be easily paid by somebody who's getting quality.
@absalomdraconis
