Step by step method for upgrading a lathe cross slide to linear ball rails. I want to turn my electronically controlled lathe into a cam grinding machine which requires the best possible accuracy. When you are chasing tenths slide friction is the enemy of precision so the ball slides are primarily to reduce sliding friction to gain accurate positioning.
This video was originally made to pass on ideas to a friend who is planning similar work. Hence the video is a bit rough around the edges, nevertheless I thought that it might be of interest to others. I will try to remember to video progress as it is made.

Why didn`t you go with V-groove roller system? I don`t know if there are any pictures of it out there, but the primary table of a Deckel S1 t&cg runs on cyl. rollers in a cross config. riding the V grooves, providing an immensely smooth action, a very rigid lateral support and the axial forces in your cases would have been offset by the leadscrew... I don`t know if such a sys. is more expensive when compared to what you chose, but i would consider it a more appropriate solution, as it is a much lower profile solution that is easily adjusted for wear and quite long lasting, provided it is taken good care of... This may be considered a more precise option, but lets be real here, any system can be as precise as you need it, it just comes with that nasty offset in the price tag, or if you are making it yourself, a greater amount of time and care... I quite like your ideas and approach, as i have similar ideas regarding some of my machinery, but that will have to wait, as i need a new shop... I got a tad overzealous in my machine acquisitions and now i can`t place for a fart in my shop, let alone do any work that needs take place for my machines to be either serviced or restored... At least you are here to keep me inspired with great projects like this, while i wait for stuff to get in order so i can start building a new shop... That is a nice cross-slide that you have got there... It would be a shame to cut off the compound groove end... As you said, it always offers some extra features for fixturing of low load componentry... All the best and kind regards, Steuss

Thanks for your sound comments. There are several options available which would do the job equally well. I had to chose just one of them and I had some experience with the type that I picked. I make no claims that it was a better or worse choice than the type you suggest. Either type would work well.

@@MotoChassisByTonyFoale Same here, i`m just more familiar with roller system as it`s something that i`ve actually had seen and dealt with... I merely consider it a bit better, as its much lower profile than either of sliders you are using, and it can be adjusted for wear, which is always a good thing... Hope your efforts result in a good system, as it`s always a pleasure seeing a machine do great after tinkerings, especially better than the factory specifications allowed for... Unfortunately no, i ain`t got no resources or links, but if you want, i can make a private video and post the link in the replies here, as i in fact have a deckel s1 with brinelled ways and its all dismounted and disassembled at the moment, so it`s hardly an issue to film it and post it, if you want a reference... `edit` I found a link to the system that im talking about... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kpQK08OmGRI.html If you want, I`ll still film my machine, as its easier to deduce the works by seeing the whole thing, rather than just the sliders... That's an interesting comment. It made me want to comment on it. One question I would want to know before making that comment (all due respect) is how clapped out is the lathe? Is it probably gonna wind up in the scap yard after he's gone? I'm dealing with a worn out bed on a cool little 1966 British made 11" x 36" Kerry lathe here in The States. I love the lathe. I'd like to true it up. I havn't priced a bed regrind yet (hardend ways). Tony's giving me ideas though I like the regrind idea better for me. We motorcle builders like to modify machines to our liking. The good news is Tony looks like a very competent mechanic.

They make these in their thousands so a few improved ones do not spoil the lathe gene pool. After two years working with my previous conversions I can say that my lathe does its job better. It is only a tool and is only as good as the work that it does.
