I have been fortunate enough to witness the renascence of a short lived railway who’s existence lived in the memories of those old enough to have seen it and photographic images of diminutive little tank engines dwarfed by the surrounding mountains. This was a railway built through the stunning Snowdonia landscape to carry slate at a time when demand was falling, in the days before mass tourism was able to give it a second chance, the last passenger train ran on 5th September 1936. Please click on this link for a short history - www.festrail.co...
Back in my childhood days my grandfather told me the path we were walking along through the Aberglaslyn Pass used to be a railway, I didn’t know whether to believe him or not as apart from the tunnels there was little evidence of a railway. Beddgelert became a place I visited many times, as I read books about the Welsh Highland Railway and various groups talked about reopening the line. At that time the Ffestiniog Railway was still being restored to Blaenau Ffestiniog and the rebirth of WHR seemed little more than an unrealistic dream.
By October 1997 the sheer perseverance and determination by the enthusiast community cumulated in the first public trains running over the former standard gauge formation of the LNWR line from Caernarfon to Afonwen as far Dinas Junction, the original terminus of the WHR.
I visited the line regularly from 1998 to the present day taking photographs and video to record the realisation of something that I had considered to be an impossible dream. In this video I compare some of the photos and video taken from past visits with a ride over todays completed line.

Every now and then a diamond is discovered in a coal seam. This video is one of them. The perfect blend of history, driver's eye view, on board and trackside. Thank you for all your inspiration and hard work, viewed by me from the uttermost parts of the earth, Western Australia!

I walked through the Aberglaslyn pass tunnels as a young kid with my parents, then rode the train through as an adult with my kids and my parents too. Such a beautiful railway.

It is incredible to think, not long ago this wonderful railway was a footpath, I first walked it with my grandfather 50 years ago.

I'm a US mutt, part of which is Welsh. When I watch your videos in Wales, I have this strange feeling that I'm visiting home, although I've never been there. Your videos are excellent. I usually like to stay in the cab and watch from the driver's POV, but this is a brilliant collage of forward and side shots. I look forward to Part 2 (and 3 and 4 and more).

Hi and thank you, I really appreciate your comment. Wales is a beautiful place and it is no surprise that the part of you that originates from Wales, feels at home watching these videos. Like yourself I also love cab rides, I also love to see the world from a train window and this is my attempt to combine the two. I'm working on Part 2 now, it should be available in a week or two.

A beautifully edited video, very well done. It really does make my heart soar to see the empty track bed full of little more than ghosts and memories to the now working line. I've walked several trails around Beddgelert since the line has re-opened, a spectacular tribute to all those involved. Lovely footage.

Hi, travelling to Wales to see the old railway coming back to life was one of the highlights of my year. The first time I walked the track-bed was with my Grandfather in the early 60's, he told about a railway that once ran through the pass, the bridge and some tunnels backed up his story, but then there was the bridge to nowhere near Beddgelert, that confused me at the time, although I now know the story behind it. Those responsible for breathing new life into the old railway certainly deserve praise, now many thousands of people can enjoy the scenery without destroying it. I'm pleased you enjoyed the video. Cheers. Tim.

A great trip and project thanks. A part of the Wanlockhead narrow gauge in the Leadhills area of southern Scotland is also being extended.I found out by accident when I discovered two sister newspapers had used one of my pictures from 2013 for the feature about it online!

Hi Chuck, I'm pleased you found it interesting, the locomotives were originally built for use in South Africa and they look right at home on the Welsh Highland Railway where their power is really useful, allowing trains of up 12 coaches to be hauled with just one locomotive.

This "Castell Caernarfon" loco reminds me of the Hungarian State Railways' Mk48 class... as long as I am seeing it from a distance.. the moment it comes closer and I can clearly see it and hear it, the illusion breaks down completely. Cheers from Hungary.

Hi, I looked up a Mk48 class locomotive - www.ingr.co.uk/images/news_kecs001.jpg "Castell Caernarfon" is similar, although it originated from South Africa. The Welsh Highland Heritage Railway has some Polish diesel locomotives - www.whr.co.uk/files/pictures/galas/dchap2/7_2b-pym.jpg There is a wonderful variety of narrow gauge industrial diesel locomotives throughout the world, they make narrow gauge lines that little bit more interesting. Best wishes from England.

Hello Maris, thank-you for your kind comment, I really appreciate it. I thoroughly enjoyed editing this video as it gave me a chance to relive many enjoyable trips to this beautiful part of Wales. Each time I visited, the rails had pushed forward a mile or two, an unrealistic dream was becoming an exciting reality, making this video possible. Those who made the reincarnation of this railway possible deserve a big thank-you from all of us who are now able to enjoy the fruits of their labour.

Hello John, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I wish I had taken more video and photos as the line was being restored, Beddgelert station being a glaring omission. At the time RU-vid did not exist and the photos and video I took were just family snapshots from many happy holidays spent in the area.

At 6:10 is that a rubber switch or did some one just run it?
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 3 года назад
Hi, it does look odd the first time you see a train running through a switch apparently set for the other road. It is normal practice on many lines where trains run at low speed and operating costs need to be reduced to a minimum. The switch is held in place by a strong spring with a damper to prevent is returning to its normal position too quickly, the weight of the train pushes the switch blades over. It is a cheap and effective way to make a passing loop automatic with no human intervention required.

With all the cash that's been spent on rebuilding this railway you think they might just run more than three trains a day in the peak summer season! Totally stupid!
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 7 лет назад
Hi Nathan, I believe a figure in the region of £28.5 million was spent on rebuilding the Welsh Highland Railway, pretty good value when compared to the £353 million cost of reopening the slightly longer Borders Railway in Scotland. I would agree that it would be nice to see more trains running in the peak season, but those that do run are around ten coaches long with at a guess 36 seats per coach, more than 300 seat per train, assuming a rate of 66% occupancy gives 200 passengers on each train. Assume all passengers are doing a round trip (although that is often not the case as many will be on coach tours), I arrive at a figure of 600 per day. Most will require food, many are likely to be staying in local hotels or bed and breakfast, I think you can begin to see how the railway benefits the local economy as a whole. These figures do not take into account the money spent locally by volunteers. Here are some interesting figures from the WHR facts sheet showing the benefits to the local economy - "In addition to employing 92 full-time staff, rising to over 150 during the peak season, independent research shows that the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways generate £25 million for the local economy each year - £250 for every man, woman and child in Gwynedd - and create a further 350 jobs in the area". I am aware that facts and figures are at best only a guide, I also believe that if and when more carriage stock and locomotives become available, more trains will be run as long as passenger numbers justify them.

Timsvideochannel1 Fair enough. However, when trains are plentiful, like on the Ratty in summer, there’s more to photograph and film. Trouble is with the WHR once you’ve filmed one train you’ve got two to three hours to wait for the next, and then if you want a ride as well...? See where I’m coming from?
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 7 лет назад
I fully understand, although if you are driving, the train makes slow progress and it is possible to film it at a number of locations. I must visit the Ratty soon, its been a few years.
