I literally had just rebuilt a 71 oif A65 thunderbolt the day the first video came out. Only found an extra 4 things i should have done when I had it apart by watching this series! Thanks very much

What a brilliant series of videos! Cannot thank you enough! As a biker and bike restorer (ish) I love learning from watching these! Incidentally I have an A65T and a great bike (especially with SRM Quill conversion). Oil pressure relief valve changed in design between ‘69 and ‘70 and the springs in earlier one get tired and release pressure earlier. (BSA works manual has spring length quoted) Millers engine assembly lube cured my woes of washing out plugs. Again, thanks. Brilliant vids!! 👍🏻

Can't thank you enough Dave for the time you find to record and post these workshop sessions. I'm sure we all appreciate your expertise, enthusiasm and modesty. After 40 years of my patient asking an old friend has just sold me a Dominator seven and an early " bolt up" featherbed 88 all, sadly, in very small pieces. I hope all your viewers are lucky enough to have, or to find, a machine to maintain or restore it's a great way to get mixed up with the" right crowd" Thanks again, Martin

Success! Like many others I've truly enjoyed this series. You've done a great service to willing but perhaps not so practiced tinkerers of old British Iron everywhere. Your choice of an old BSA twin was rather inspired and in keeping with the whole "budget" thing, since old Beezas can still be had fairly reasonably. That said, I'd selfishly love to see you do the same with a Norton, and I'm sure others might be eager to see you dig into a Triumph twin...even hand over their shed-bound non-runner for your tender care. But well done! I probably owe you a beer.

Dave, your series with the A65 is like a book I cannot put down. Last night I binge watched all eleven episodes, which brought back lots of memories of my days owning a 1968 441 Victor Special and then a new 1978 750 Bonneville. Now I'm riding somewhat newer BMW oilheads, which are much more reliable, but can be much more expensive to repair. Well done, from San Diego, CA. Looking forward to your next project (and turn on that garage heater)!

I was looking forward to this part and it didn’t disappoint! Plugs can sometimes be fickle things, they look perfect, gapped correctly and clean and still they won’t work. Like you say, good to have too much oil than too little on startup. The test ride and tuning will be good to watch. I’m not sure what you do next but any restoration or problem solving videos would be really watchable. Great stuff Dave.

Thanks Dave. Understand it's not easy to build a bike on film, but it's very helpful. Nice one. I have built several bikes and I learned some more tips here, like putting the pistons in hot water to warm them before fitting gudgeon pins. Just yesterday, fired up a late fifties Triumph after a full engine rebuild from new big ends up. I put just a very small amount of oil on the new piston rings, also rode the bike asap and gave it some throttle. Use the combustion chamber pressure loading to push the rings out against the bores to aid with seating in the important first few miles.

Competent Master of British motorcycles: I have only learned about assembly and adjustment of engines and cyclism in your wonderful videos. As for moistening the plugs with any fluid, it is extremely harmful, as it moistens the sealing mass of the electrode on the ceramic, making the plug unusable at once or in a short time. I learned from electrical technicians, who coiled magnets and built battery ignition coils. They always recommended: to clean the plugs on the electrodes only with a brass watch brush or a copper wire with a beaten, sharp and flat tip to clean the dirt in the gap between the central electro and the plug housing. The spark jumps out often looking good power. However, if we put the plug in a device that simulates tension on compression, it will be seen that the spark will not be able to jump from the central electrode to the spitting side electrode.

I really appreciate that you allowed the first start-up to be captured 'live,' even with its potential to disappoint. Seeing you problem solve in itself is a good lesson for all. This is such a great series of videos, thanks for sharing your knowledge. I've learnt a lot watching you and mostly gained enough confidence to finally tackle the restoration of my 1959 A10 BSA. Unfortunately in this part of Italy where I live there's nobody able to do the job so I need to carry it out myself. Take care

Thanks for showing the problems you had. I get fedup with the it started first kick and it was nice to see the truth. I did a full rebuild on a 1979 xs750. Hope to see some more videos.

I've just started my first British bike build a 59 Triton used to belong to my Dad, not doing a full restoration bit of an oily rag with some new parts, keeping his memory but adding in some bits I like, I'm enjoying it and your videos have certainly helped out although I'll have to reference back to as well, threads sizes n pitches throwing me a bit compared to me Japanese bikes, great videos

Sad this series is over, but I hope there is more to come. Rebuilt my 1970 Commando from a basket case 3 years ago. Starting the engine for the first time is always a nervous moment. But I needed fewer kicks than you! I learned a lot from your videos! Stay safe! Uli

Have waited with eager anticipation for each episode of this challenging build. I too have often started with a box of bits only to find wrong parts as well as some missing. Thank you for taking the time to put this series together and the calm relaxed method of delivery is a joy to listen to. Can’t wait for the next bike and the next series as well as the 650’s running in gremlins.

Never believe an instant start on a overhauled engine on TV. It ran already. This was the reality of starting a newly built engine. I know, I know !!!!

While it's not an AJS, you might consider one of those Indian-made Royal Enfield Bullets as a really affordable way to scratch that itch. I've had one of the older original "engineering fossil" pre-unit Iron Cylinder style ones for a few years (a 2005), and couldn't be happier with it. They're not for everybody, requiring a bit of tinkering and are certainly no speed demons, but if you've nursed along an old Ajay, you'll be right at home, and the character's gonna be much the same. Mine sort of reminds me of Norton twins I've owned ridewise...perhaps even a bit more "elemental", as singles are. The newer style Unit Construction Engine Bullets (post-2009) aren't too different character-wise to the old "oil lamps", and perhaps a tad happier cruising above the 50s, but one of their new 650 twins need make no concessions whatsoever to modernity. You can take 'em anywhere, and are akin to a new Triumph Bonneville for about half the price. They've been out a few years, but good luck finding a used one! Once folks get one they are loathe to part with it.
