Why? This poor lady who owned it has passed away and likely not too long ago. Isn't anything personal/private anymore? Would you like people to read your intimate thoughts , special feelings or what have you on RU-vid after you had passed away? Not me. I don't think it's anyone's business what she wrote in her diary. But that's just my opinion.
@@MissX905 Everything else is interesting to me, but with her personal diary, I have to agree with you. Learning her heart was broke when she was fifteen does nothing to improve anyone's life quality. If that book was meant for the world to know, she wouldn't have had the cheap novelty lock done up.
@alison webster Did you see that leather/suade coat with the sheepwool lining hanging to the left of the roller skates? I used to have one like it. Priceless!
Squirrels usually squirrel away pine cones for the pine seeds. I think they're edible cause of all the bits of pine cone litter everywhere. Like they pulled off the cone scales, chucked them aside, and ate the seeds.
As an Australian I have to keep reminding myself when you are putting your hands in the stuff in the garage that you don’t have all the same bugs and spiders as we do in Australia...
I'm so obsessed with this show!!! My heart was in my chest as he was uncovering all of the comics, watches, and albums, you can kind of get a sense of when Alexander starts getting excited about something, pine cones start flying through the air 😂😂😂!!
You should consider investing in a reusable respirator and getting trained how to use it properly. Allergic reactions can get worse as you continue to have them. My mother nearly died several times from an allergic reaction. Please take care of yourself, you have a family that needs you.
Sadly cursive penmanship isn't even taught here in the states anymore. Teenagers or younger can't even read it. That diary would have been hieroglyphics to them 😳
I rode my bicycle past your window last night I roller skated to your door at daylight It almost seems like you're avoiding me I'm okay alone but you got something I need Well, I got a brand new pair of roller skates You got a brand new key I think that we should get together And try them out, you see I been looking around awhile You got something for me Oh, I got a brand new pair of roller skates You got a brand new key I ride my bike, I roller skate, don't drive no car Don't go too fast but I go pretty far For somebody who don't drive, I been all around the world Some people say, I done all right for a girl I asked your mother if you were at home She said yes, but you weren't alone Oh, sometimes I think that you're avoiding me I'm okay alone but you've got something I need Well, I got a brand new pair of roller skates You got a brand new key I think that we should get together And try them out, you see Oh, I got a brand new pair of roller skates You got a brand new key Source: Musixmatch Songwriters: Melanie Safka
@@wrenhazard0728 I agree, Im surprised his wife hasn't grabbed some being a preschool teacher. Mu mom was a kindergarten and art class teacher and would have loved to have them. I'm sure if you hosed them off they'd be fine to use.
I was thinking that. Thought about emailing but they never answered one from a month ago except by an auto response saying they were behind on email. By the time they read them the stuff will be tossed.
Maybe but if they are older, they are probably glass and glass is not used much anymore. I don't even know if labs even do glass anymore. Different cutting tools, edging and has to be heat or chem treated.
They mostly want glasses for the frames, not the lenses. There is such a variety of lens prescriptions that it would be impractical to try to match them to an individual.
@@karenkoe7096 These glasses are probably ancient, based on the wrappers! A bit of background: Zeiss was founded in Jena in 1846, producing mainly microscopes and other optical instruments. The company was very successful, even during the World Wars. After WWII, the original HQs were in the Soviet zone and all the equipment was dismantled and shipped to the USSR. Most of the senior staff was taken to the US sector of Germany though and re-started the company there. Carl Zeiss Jena was the name of the eastern branch, structured as a VEB (people's-owned company). The fact that the envelopes don't say VEB Carl Zeiss on them means that they're either pre-1950s or the VEB was omitted on export goods, both equally possible.
@@Ragnar8504 If they are that old.....they are probably very small and glass. Wonder why they were in that garage. I don't think anyone in that family was into optometry, etc. Might have picked them up somewhere for some project.
Yeah nevermind that bag of vintage toys you kept walking on, just get the boxes of pinecones down. Alex! Those bags are easily moved from your path and would be safer when you are in a building by yourself. Please don't get hurt!
That green block you thought was plaster, is a block of polishing compound. You rub it on a spinning buffing wheel for polishing metal. Green is typically for polishing stainless or other semi-hard metals
Hi there, a bit off subject but maybe you know since you know what the polishing compound is. Our retirement purchase home came with a 90s Jennaire stove top. One side had only the grill thing. So we ordered another stove inset to have 4 burners. The only thing is the original is brushed steel and none being sold (whirlpool bought them out and supplies the replacements) is not brushed. Now its all marked. I didnt do it. A visiting relative used scouring pad on it!!! What I want to do is make it look brushed like the other side to hide marks but make match. Is that possible? Ive tried to look online but not found exactly how to do that and with what items.
@@lyricwritertoo I don’t think polishing compound is what your looking for. That would just shine metal. I’m not sure what you’d need for a brushed look. That’s something done in a factory and I have no idea how it’s done.
@@lyricwritertoo the easiest thing I would think of is to use a scotch-brite pad, kind of like the green one on a scouring pad/sponge. You'll want to find a maroon one that's more aggressive than green. You should be able to get sheets of it in the paint section of a hardware store near the sandpaper. Use the pad like sandpaper and slide it back and forth, giving a brushed stainless look. Pick up the pad and scrub a different spot so it looks more random. Just make sure you scrub it in the same back and forth direction. If that doesn't work you can try the dark green pads that are more aggressive. Hope this helps.
I had the worst day today. I look forward to watching this amazing series and all the treasure you uncover. But most of all, the comments made me actually laugh out loud tonight. Sending each and everyone of you my gratitude from across the pond in England!
I wasn't sure at first, but now seeing in the garage, I know 100% the lady is the same woman Alex bought the cool '64 Caddy from. She was a very sweet woman and definitely way more into her piano music than collecting clothes. Good vid! The comics, records and watches look like a fun find from the garage!
@@debshaw680 The house has not been vacant for 16 years. Just look at this video at 26:33 and the "Abandoned Caddy!! Will it run??" video at 5:06. You'll see they're the same green garage and they both have the same unique basket hanging on the left wall. It's def her.
@@maxzee1739 well geez too new to this channel, now I’ve got to go look. Lol *edit*. I’m 100% sure you’re right. If she taught piano for 50 years in the area that would explain why he said the baby grand is in the shop for a while in case people want to pay tribute to her in a way. Heart melted a little.
That toaster you found is an old Sunbeam Toastermatic, very cool little appliances and worth a decent bit of money in working order. I'd love to buy it but I'm in Australia.
I’m beginning to understand why people aren’t very happy with squirrels taking up residence in their homes! Here in Australia we think they’re just the cutest things ever, but I guess they can be quite a problem!👏👏👍🇦🇺
Plus if they start chewing on the wiring inside walls you're looking at possible fire hazards among costly repairs to fix. I also thought they were cute & like to see them at my birdfeeders :)
Watching you tackle this garage has inspired me to clean out my shed. If I find any pine cones I know where to send them. I have only discovered this channel recently and now have the addiction. Must get on with clearing my hoard..after I finalize my online shopping.
I found myself holding my breath and putting a blanket over my mouth and nose while watching this episode to keep from breathing in all the dust. LOL :)
Continued nice finds. I guess it would have been too easy starting with the stuff nearest the garage door and working your way back rather than having to climb over everything. 😉
Great video Alex. I find it a curious thing that most people on my street that own a garage, never park their vehicles in it. It seems that a lot of them, in my small Ontario town, only use their garages in the summertime to sit in, simply to relax, on a sunny day and chat with the neighbours. You can see that their garages are generally packed to the ceilings with “stuff”. It’s probably very common in older neighbourhoods.
There is no rhyme or reason with this collection. I get the feeling her partner passed away early and she used this stuff to fill the void or remind her of her happier times. Maybe she just liked it. I hope she knows her treasures will live on and bring others joy too.
Alex said in a live stream that they probably inherited the contents of both their parents' homes so this could be the result of professions and hobbies of six or more adults.
All the posters are correct. And her and her husband were both only children of only children, so they inherited all of items of both of their parents. Seems like instead of going through the items and discarding what wasn't needed, they just kept everything.
I bet that diary has some interesting stories. You'll probably find the hatch to the bomb shelter underneath all those pine cones! I look forward to these videos more than any tv show.
I thought it was interesting that even when she was young, she was already keenly interested in fashion and even fabric. (Notice that she was more into what the boys said about her tights than she seemed to be into the boys themselves!)
OMG,I'm an asthmatic, allergic to dust. I was screaming in my head open the garage door back up.Than when you started to cough through pine cone dust again I was re- chanting OPEN THE DOOR. I swear I was having an asthma attack just watching this. I'm truly hooked on your videos❤😷
This reminds me of when I had to clean my dad's house out. 40 years of business records in the far corner of the basement. Heavy, banana shipping boxes. Took me an entire weekend to haul them upstairs for the shredding company to eventually destroy. I'm surprised I didn't have a heart attack.
When you got the Cadillac out of there, stuff piled up fast! Poor lady who lived in the hoard :( Thanks for the early morning entertainment! Keep up the good work and stay safe!
All you guys posting about why he doesn't first clear a path and then clean up the overhead stuff: The channel is **CURIOSITY** Incorporated. Read the large print. He is **curious** about what is up there, in there, over there, behind that. The bonus is the the can sell many of the items. Disorganization is catnip to the curious. I used to frequent a used books store in Pasadena CA. One day I went in and had to step around two large boxes or jumbled up books. Each box had a sign: "unsorted books - do not touch". I asked the counterman what that was about. He told me, "We are thinning the shelves. That's all the stuff we take out. It flies out the door this way and we don't have to throw anything away." Same here.
that coat hanging on the wall with the leader/suede outer shell and fur hanging from it is dead 60's all the way! I love it!! these vids are so interesting.....
60% of comments: “Alex, get a respirator!!” 30% of comments: “Wow! Hoarder squirrels!” (That is an amazing collection of pine cones!) 10% of comments: “Alex, you should do it the way I would do it!” Also someone: “Alex, you should get a GoPro!” Me: “Keep on keepin’ on, Alex! Thanks for taking us along!” ✌🏼
Hahah I was just about to comment how you can make a drinking game out of their live chats. Take a drink every time someone mentions a go pro , two when they ask him if her regrets the clothes deal , and finish your drink if they tell him to go back to the attic .
You should really go through all the folded bedding , bags of clothing, towels boxes of anything etc......my parents had to clean out my grandmothers home after she passed and she was a hoarder, however; it was a relatively clean environment. To my point, they ended up finding over $30,000 yes thirty thousand dollars and then an additional $25,000 in jewelry that a jeweler paid them....which you know was probably worth even more. It was ALL found folded in towels, sheets, in blankets, boxes of dishes, etc. Open and examine everything!
When my brother passed away we found rolls of money in old stained socks with holes. He was right in thinking that people wouldn’t find his cash. Luckily we had put the socks aside to use as dust rags and discovered the money during cleanup. I agree with the OP. Check everything!
After my dad passed, my mom hid her wedding rings for save keeping & forgot where she hid them. Spent years looking. During her last months, she made me promise to look thru EVERYTHING for the rings & $$ that she used to hide. Never found any $$ but did find her wedding rings. They were in an empty suitcase hidden under a staircase. First instinct was to just put suitcase in donate pile but I promised to check everything...there they were!! So you just never know.
Sitting here kind of chuckling at the fact that you were deciding what to stand on to get up into the rafters and went with the oak chair… When there is clearly both a stepstool and a ladder! Lol! (Ps, not a negative comment, I’m amused 😉)
Wow ...every time I view one of your videos... I am overwhelmed ...and need to take a nap ...sooooo much stuff ...disrespected ... you are doing a great service saving the work on thousands of craftsmen ‘s to be used and recycled....I will never understand Hoarding... I personally have helped clean up three hoarder ‘s homes OMG ...God Bless you it is mentally difficult 😇
You never disappoint, Alex. If only there was a market for pine cones! My goodness, between the garage and attic there are a zillion. We are all looking forward to the auction and wish you immense success. I'll be watching to see Zinovia and Hans help out some more, and maybe Melissa! This is a fun series for sure. Sending safe cyber hugs from Maryland, with love from BanDana Gramma
That toaster may be a really good model from the 60's or so! The toast holes are sideways so there can be a special sensor that makes some of the most accurately toasted toast. The channel 'Technology Connections' has a video all about them!
At 16:22, that is a dividing head used on a milling machine generally for making gears. It's a machinists item. It's a smaller one probably Asian made is my guess, but could match up with a number of the ones's european made back in the days. KenS.
There is a guy here on youtube with the channel name "The Elegant Oxford". He shines up old shoes and gives them to college grads who maybe don't have enough money to get a good pair of shoes. Maybe you could donate those shoes to him or someone like him who does shoe repairs and gives shoes away. Just a thought. Those are high end shoes that CAN be repaired and refurbished. Woowoo about the comics! Great video!
My other odd YT obsession - men's shoes cobblers! 😆 There's others that completely restore them. Need a collab! Bedo's Leatherworks, Trenton and Heath, are two good ones.
Maybe we are all experiencing angst for no reason and you are wearing a mask already? My husband works in respiratory and as a result all those mouse droppings and dust flying around makes me nervous. However, having said all of that, let me say I love watching your explorations and finds! Great video series! Hope an N95 mask or respirator is your new best friend there. Happy hunting!
Have no idea where you got the energy for this , I would have cried when I opened the garage door. You are amazing. You make the energizer bunny look like a snail.
I'm more fascinated by the diary than the stuff. I was once into reselling and crafting things to sell but I've always loved reading and have a interest in hearing other peoples life stories.
I am binge watching but holy cow I ant believe this house didnt go up in flames with the amount of pinecones chewed up in the garage & attic ugh..love these videos !
That diary might be interesting to read to get insight on the lady.. I hope you are wearing a HEAVY DUTY mask today.😊 ps:. That little box nest took some squirrel a long time to make.
The one suggestion I have for you when you grab from the rafters is bring goggles that are closed all the way around for your eyes. Getting things stuck in your eyes are the worst! Some nice little pieces of furniture for sure and that rocker looked like it had all the pieces but some wood glue, ropes and vices and it would be back as new and ready for auction.
Ok, I am a little mad at you for starting to read the diary and then sort of abruptly stopping. We are going to need more details. I need to read this diary!!!!
I agree. The seeds for the future hoard may have been sown way back then - she went to the shopping center to model her fashionable clothes and hairdo for the boys - but became transfixed by material at the fabric store. I can't wait until this mystery is solved!
You can find the most unique things. I love this series so much and you never disappoint on finding treasures. I was afraid you were going to fall and lose the garage door opener and lay there till Melissa got worried and came looking for you! This lady who owned this house was rich, the name brand are so high end. So be careful Alex! Great video!
Hey Alex, just want to say thank you for a year of entertaining vid's to get us through lockdown. Wishing you and your family a healthy and happy 2021.
Every time you started pulling something out of the rafters, and you’d be like “I wonder what’s in here?”, that scene from Goonies (where Mikey wants to go snooping in the old restaurant basement and he fakes needing to go to the restroom, and Chunk is trying to get Mikey to stay upstairs and he says “This ain’t the kind of place you wanna go to the bathroom in......There could be dead things, Mikey! DEAD THINGS!”) pops in to my head. I just kept waiting for mummified critters to fall on you!
When my husbands 102 yr old grandmother, died a bunch of family was cleaning the house. I found her diaries & my mother-in-law made me throw them in the would stove 😢
@@fayewhite7541 How sad! Imagine if someone had found Anne Frank’s diary and thought, “This is personal. I won’t read it. Best to destroy to preserve her dignity.” 😳😭
Loved this! Esso was in Europe when I was 7 and I have an Esso man hanging in my memory China cabinet! My Grandpa died more than 70 years ago, he was an Optomitrist and he and my Grandma would spend time in the Savannah Georgia area, Peoria/Chicago area and the Edmunton Canada area. They would deliver, retest/ test and fit glasses to the individual. They would keep spare lenses, some frames and misc items in each location. Communication included telegraph and telephone at the time if you wanted quick communication ( His name was E H Anderson, my Grandma was an O'Dell who I think had family roots around your area! Bertha died in the 1990s at age 99 and there are several pictures of me with my great Grandma Albertina O'Dell.)
Interesting! Please do a detailed episode showing the comics and wrist watches you found. I think people would buy the metal tins of crosman pellets, they are kinda cool. That ginger ale box was a nice find too. The eyeglass lenses, if thats what they are, if not worth anything, could be donated to just about any optical place, as they send them overseas so missionaries can make eyeglasses for people in need... zeiss is a great brand.
If they are very old they are probably glass which is no longer used much. The lions might take them though I doubt if they are using glass much either. That glass has to be cut to shape and edged and heat treated to be used. I doubt if many places do that anymore.
Hi I can’t believe theirs more in the garage, what a nightmare.iv only watched today ,Your a realy nice kind caring man you have a beautiful heart an lovely family lv Ann uk
I can’t believe how much I physically try and help you move this stuff 😂😂😂 I have great grandparents house’s that I have gone through so I know exactly what your going through
